Haven & Hearth - A TRUE Sandbox Game

DawnsingerDawnsinger Member Posts: 212

Well, I've been a long time lurker here, but I've been playing this game for a bit, and I've decided to make a post about it.

Haven & Hearth is one of the few true sandbox MMOs I've came across ( on that list, UO, EvE and SWG stand high ), and it's truly AMAZINGLY fun. The developers say it's an early alpha ( if it is, it's the most stable alpha I've ever seen ), but it seems to me to be more of a well grounded beta than anything else, as there's not really any real stability issues and the ones that ARE there are because the developers are running off a computer as a server, nothing really to do with the code.

The game's content / features cycle is about a feature or two per week ( see here for the updates forum ), and we've recently had a map reset ( 7th September ), which means that no one is TRULY well established yet. The alliance of towns / forts / homesteads I belong to is still looking for somewhere to permanently settle, although that mainly means we're leaving behind ghost towns dotting the landscape. For a map of one of nine "supergrids" ( which are basically huge landscapes ) check here. The rest haven't been explored yet, except some of the Eastern and South-Eastern supergrids. Everyone is still racing in the search for high quality materials to start crafting iron goods and food.

Now, let's get onto the meat and bones of the sandbox game, the features list. The game has a fairly complex crafting system, usually involving a day to three of waiting for the higher tier goods ( such as steel ) and a lot of hard work for high crafting skill and quality of materials. It's still pretty bare bones in terms of different buildings, there's just a general "log cabin" house, although you can build cellars and other things inside it, for your own private use. It's got a LOT of things to do in game, if you're not farming, hunting, smithing, mining, making tea, making silk or trading goods, you're usually on the run from PKers. The game has a sort of permanent death. You die in game, and depending on your change / tradition belief ( the game has a belief system that involves bonuses or negatives depending on where you standing on your belief ) you'll either lose all your learning or none of it.

Pretty much every skill is needed by everyone, and so most people specialise and join a village or make a homestead from where they trade for other people's goods. High quality goods are certainly in demand at the moment, especially food, as food is used to level up your stats through the "FEP System" which causes you to gain stats depending on what foodstuffs you eat. ( Recommendation for anyone who comes to play: Have a varied diet and avoid constant constitution foods, as they'll cause you to have to spend TONNES of time and effort levelling up your other stats.

PvP holds a great place in this game, as you can often set your hostile / criminal actions on, run into a village with friends and slaughter everyone there, before robbing the village of everything of value and returning to your own. Of course, the developers saw something very wrong with this, and implemented a system which is beautiful on so many levels; the ranger system. People with the Ranger can use "smells" from crime scenes to hunt down players who committed crimes, until they get to that player's hearthfire, where they can summon them and, if they have the Murder skill, kill them whilst they're offline or online. Yes, that's right, you need skills to both be able to attack and kill other players, and that's a good thing, trust me.

Really, I can't describe how good this game is, especially considering it's an alpha / beta. Check out the YouTube video here or visit the main web page, and come play with us.

TL;DR? Basically, Haven & Hearth is a great sandbox game, come play it for bugger's sake.

I'll give it a try, if only for the colorful graphics and cheerful music.  They're actually warm and inviting (unlike a lot of sandboxes I've tried), which makes me think maybe the devs made the rest of the game fun, warm, and inviting too!

(UPDATE: Ironically, having played it an hour or so there are almost zero sounds to speak of.  The only sound I've heard is the NES Zelda "you got the Triforce" sound when you learn a skill. :P  )

Fun, yes. Warm and inviting, sometimes, but most of the time you'll be running for your life from a bear, boar or fox, until you manage to claim land.

    Hi,

Not to be rude or anything, but I cant understand how people can play games that have the looks like a Nintendo game.

Thar was what I saw in the video.

If a PK death causes skill loss that basically will cause most of us to ignore it.  Never minded losing stuff, you can always buy or remake it, but when you take skill points away, forget it.

The permanent death fanatics might like this, but I can assure you they are rare.

Here we go lets derail the poor guys entire thread with "Eve isn't a real sandbox because you cant leave your ship"

To the OP the game is oldschool looking Ill give it a shot later but honestly I would expect a new game to release even in a Iso view with much better artstyle and graphics.

    PLaying: EvE, Ryzom

    Waiting For: Earthrise, Perpetuum

Even for a graphics ***** like me, some games are simply legends to not play them, and most of them don't have today's graphics. Needless to say, I'll try it.

Thanks for the recommendations, but even though I love sandbox feature's, I am also a graphic whore aswell being a older gamer that simply wants games to look better and better (just talking about looks okay)

I might try this game if it was for a mobil phone as then I wouldn't mind the graphics and the sounds. But then again I can't even go back to games I truly enjoyed/loved 10 years ago, mainly due to how the animations and graphics look. With MMORPG not even SWG can get me back, still have love for the game, but the animations just are to dated for my visual pleasure I want out of my games.

STOP right there.  Almost had me hooked on giving this a try.  PK'ing and PVP are, IMO, just an exercise in teen keyboard spamming.  Not for me, no thanks.

Still holding out for a new, sandbox, polished, challenging, medieval fantasy, Tolkien races/classes, PVE game.

If you can compromise on the fact that the game isn't based on Tolkien's lore, do check out FFXIV.

    Your point?

In case you missed it I said "I am a older gamer that wants games to look better" , I didn't say that older gamers need games to look better as if I said something like that I could understand your reaction.

C-64 and some Vic20 games love them on my IPhone, tried some on my pc I just couldn't get into to them, doesn't mean others should share my opinion.

Looks interesting, I'm sure somebody will like it.

The little video where the guy is carrying the dead bear over his head made me laugh out loud. I don't know, it just struck me funny.

I think you are right; I might have to.  Just as I have played WOW as a stop-gap game while awaiting greater things, I might land myself in FFXIV.

There are some things I like about FFXIV (from what I can tell).  I do wish they'd get rid of the flying ships.  To me, part of the charm of a fantasy medieval world is a simpler time and place, and sci-fi kind of throws the complexity of technology into that.

It's a decent game for it's level of "scope".    The downside is that the players on this forum demand a few handfulls of millions for their level of "scope".

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

It's really hard to step backwards on graphics these days.  Sort of like going from using a heated indoor restroom to an outhouse in the winter time.

The graphics of this game are just too much of  a step backwards to ask of most people.

To be perfectly honest, I find most "good looking" games completely and utterly ugly. Crysis, etc, all seem to sacrifice good looks for an attempt to be photorealistic in sepia.

The game's graphics are definitely not a strong suit, but the video isn't REALLY a very good starting point. It's a couple of months out of date, and things like trees, heathland and the like have since been upgraded to more of a DS level of graphical system.

( As a side note, I find graphics whores hilarious. ;3 I honestly think they're the people that have slowly degraded the gaming industry into creating crappy games with decent graphics. )

So this looks like a pretty pimp game. But what exactly do I need to do?

The wiki tells me to get tree branches and craft and stuff, but all the trees are in territory already owned by someone.

I literally wandered around for like 30 minutes looking for trees, then the server crashed. I figure I'll just give it another shot tomorrow, maybe some trees will grow or somethin.
