How are we judging sucess anyways? Number of players? Number of accounts? Amount of profit? Number of hours played?

    Put out some numbers people.

Forever looking for employment. Life is rather dull without it.

1a. Attacks are certainly boring. I personally have to play a knight or something to get some effects that look somewhat neat, but I don't play pure melee anyways. They just don't make sense to me at all. The guy in plate tanking the dragon or the guy in plate with the power of a god running through him...

1b. While sometimes the asian weapons look nice, they also just as often look hideous.

2a. Gotta look around more. While super heroes are pominante, there is much more out there now-a-days.

2b. Naruto being original? Are you serious? This is just one in the long line of the power up japanese comics that pulls much from those that came before it. This is their version of the super hero, that and the giant fighting robot pilot. It would be like saying a new mecha comics was some wholely original work.

Forever looking for employment. Life is rather dull without it.

He's right about mainstream Western comics being stuck in the superhero rut though. The interesting stuff is often indie, or as in the case of Vertigo, an imprint of a larger company. And maybe that applies to MMOs too. The western indie developers will be the innovators.

I have to admit that when I compare combat videos of SWOR and TERA for example, korean game wins, hands down.

Maybe Korea is not leading the industry, but they are indeed trying to make progress and improve.

I kind of dislike western feel of automatic superiority over everyone else. Saying "sleeping on the laurels" comes to mind.

Gaming is much more important in Korea then in here. The number one starcraft player lives there and he’s living like a pro there. Like a real star and all. The kid was a nerd back in Montreal lol.

Anyway, I think most people simply just hate asians for what it is.

The culture in asia is about constant evolution and even if it’s bad, we will still try to strive and keep on trying until we make a major leap. However, thanks to this mentality, Korea is fully installed on optic fiber, which means, much better games at times.

The culture here in the west is; if it’s good, we sit on it until the next giant leap. The drawback is that we can sometimes make the wrong giant leap. We like to use the word “When it’s ready” as a sign of quality. Western culture is a bit more lazy but with good reasons, we had it good for a long time here. So until the next giant leap, Asia itself will slowly surpass the west.

The biggest issue here, is that many people can’t stand the fact that a “non” white country is much more advance.

i wouldnt say much more advance.. our military (american) is insanely advance then any robot japan has... i think no country still can match up to hollywood movie industry..

I think its the common people in america thats the problem.. slow to change and adapt.. while japanese and koreans can't wait to get the next cellphone.. poeple over here stick with the same cell forever..

and greedy ceo's are the problem too, when they are content they sit there and do nothing and screw people lover.. cellphone industry, CAR industry, telco's, pharmacy industry... etc.. they dont innovate and just reap the benefits.

another thing to consider, competition! when america has no competition they put out shitty products and dont give a shit about the consumer... we should be at least thankful korea is a developed country that shares our interest and competes with our mmo games.  we all know competition makes things better.. im sure with aion being here it will keep the west on its toes.. which is great for everyone.   and japan isn't really into mmo it seems so korea fills that void.

blizzard is a solid company tho, theyre art is appealing and they are quality..  but majority of the art direction western games have turns me away.. they look so ugly! like lord of the rings, dungeons and dragons.. everquest...

now we all know they have shitty ass mmo's too but it does fill a void, such as kart racing or some side scrolling oldschool game.
but lets look at the high end of korean mmo's, with games like aion, tera online, blade and soul, and mabinogi heroes.. maybe even huxley.
It seems like WOW is the only good mmo in the western market cuz every over hyped mmo that comes out of the west soon dies a painful death. cuz they suck ass..
korean mmos are just alot prettier, super hot chicks, just better overall design...
All the new generation mmos in korea are now doing real time fighting which means twitch and actuall player skill, everything coming out of the west is stll the same old rpg style fighting, graphics still ugly ass hell and not evolving at all.
sure u can say, all koreans games are grinders, but thats only because they like to grind, once they want a global market they can easily change that such as aion.. i have no doubt in my mind the west can't keep up with the creative level the koreans are displaying.  our society only sees them as a game, korea its pretty much a cyber land.. its their way of life.
Plus korean games just dont die as much as western games, they seem to have legs, even the shittiest games.  Without blizzard can u even say western games are competiting?
plus. this may be superficial but western mmo's and western games in general has some ugly ass chicks. its like they dont want hot chicks and want soccer moms or something.. wtf is wrong with you people

The west gave us ac,uo,SWG,eve and thouse are just mmorpgs. as for MMO'S AA, BF, MOH.

The only eastern MMO worth anything was Lineage 2.

the whole grind/gear type style is just a fad. In 10 years who knows maybe thegermans will take over the MMORPG market lol

western leading in gamplay and graphics??? the next big thing is suppose to be the new starwars.. it looks like crap, the gamplay isn't realtime.. all the next gen korean games have really good graphics and theyre all moving to console level action gameplay..
I'm always surprised to see people complain that females in games are too sexy, have thong armor.. and what not.. its fuckin fantasy. no wonder americans like ugly pieces of shit like runescape cuz they have the uglyiest models ever seen.. serioulsy.. complainging that the chicks are too scantaly..  either ur gay or some kinda feminist, lets put soccer moms in games to please these people.  matter of fact lets just put ugly people in games, that will sell. sex sells shut up already.
this thread is suppose to be about next gen korean games.. so stop bringing up f2p 6 year old games.. in fact those f2p games are more successful then any western f2p and some p2p games.. thats a kick in the balls.   obvioulsy their games appeal to us, because they do succeed here. its only u loud minority that complains.  actually look how bad western free mmos are.. that pengin game, wizard 101 or some shit, habbo hotel.. all jokes
complaining about their art style, maybe u should go play something ugly like runescape cuz u people seem to like ugly in western games. its their culture and unique to them, and sure ass hell does appeal to westerners.. maybe they hate our style and say all we have are balled guys in fps games.. no creativity there.

the point is.. they have the bandwidth, they have the tech, and its a way of life for them.. and its only a game for kids to western people..  its only a matter of time b4 these next gen mmo's come over here and learned what aion did and changed it make it not a grinder..

lol, name one good fp game?

Besides DDO(which is western), what other F2P as recieved a good response from the gaming community... Im not saying DDO is good,.I have never played the game .

The point is the eastern MMO is as well done as a B-movie. The copy paste storyline, graphics, charecter creation, classes, gameplay.

Not all the games are trash but 99% of what they are releasing is boring crap.

The Next Gen Asian games will be the same hideously boring, grind a 1000 mobs a day crap, with the usual scantily-clad underage-looking girls and the usual girly-looking men for the Asian players to fantasize over as they grind, and grind, and grind...

... and grind.  Each day, every day.

There's grinding in Western games, I agree, but an Asian game raises it to the Nth degree.  They're pure garbage.

    Thanks Shannia,

That's interesting. I didn't know that about Korea.

If we only ever look at what the giant corporations are doing then it will always look like there is no change. Independents innovate and then the giants copy or buy them up. Even the giants like DC have a huge number of non-super hero comics. Then there are the companies like Dark Horse that do very little super hero comics. The variety is out there even in western MMOs but often people just refuse to look or do look but dismiss it because it is different or not as polished as the AAA titles.

One thing the independents in the west could use more of is engine licensing to lower production costs and increase the quality of the appearance of the game itself.

The only thing they lead in is head count and the shitty games made. There is not one single Asian based game that hooked me to sub ever.

Not so difficult to do when you have a tiny population (when compaired to america) and a hugh amount of income direct to the government...the US pays a lot of money to Korea for bases there.  I read somewhere that every year the US pays the Korean government what would amount to $100 for every Korean.  Then you have whatever money Korea gets from taxes, trade, etc.

Do I find it creepy that my grandfather likes to get hugs from my girlfriend? Na. Just makes me realize we're all still very much the same no matter the age. The attention older men give to younger girls was excepted and expected only few decades ago.

As a result, many Koreans went to LAN cafes and PC centers to play a popular MMORPG which was Lineage. He explained that many Koreans did not care for the content or the story and only heard that if they were to get a really rare item, they would be able to sell it for a pretty penny. My uncle told me that many Koreans fled to PC cafes as a safe haven (told their families they were going to work) and grinded endlessly, even through nights in hopes of acquiring that uber rare sword in Lineage. He finishes up telling me that was how Lineage became huge in Korea and how it became a lifestyle in Korea (MMORPG and gaming). Believe it or not, but my uncle told me this with a straight face so I believe it. He told me that the idea of instantly receiving a lump sum of cash from the sales of virtual item drops  was something that pushed everyone to grind and instill the addictive qualities in MMORPGs. The chance to make money off of it. I believe the trend has always stayed the same within the asian mmo market. While I do not agree with the concept, it does make sense.

This is the definition of "hardcore", at least to me.  When you have to play against people like this (when it is your hobby), and they are doing it to feed mouths - who do you think will come out on top most the time?

Competition is great.  It makes both sides strive to always try to get the one-up on each other in vicious volleys.

I remember when playing ffxi camping nidhogg one night and we lost claim to some gilsellers.  One of the guy was so mad he /shouted: "congratulations!, you get to eat rice for a few more days!"  It's sad but true.

Well, sadly it looks like I may well be right.  I just tried Aion and it looks and feels like every other sad-sack pile of shit the Asians have ever previously made.  I hope to god I'm wrong, because I would hate to bin my nice new copy of Aion less than 24 hours after I opened the box

One thing I want to say about Korean MMOs. While most of them are very similar and I'm completely turned off by the grind and the cash shops, every once in a while we get an interesting title.

For example, how many western golf MMOs are out there? Or racing MMOs? Or sports? What I see from the Asian market is an attempt to actually innovate the genre. While we, in the west, are stuck with auto attack and auto aim, the next batch of Asian MMOs looks like it will have real time, arcade quality combat. Which, in my book at least, warrants a try.

Sadly though, most of these new and innovative Asian MMOs will be tainted by cash shops and bots. What's even sadder is that the next batch of western MMOs will still have auto attack and auto aim.

i was looking at blade and soul, terra online, c9, and nothing out of the west is real time combat or remotely as impressive..

one more thing i was right about westerners love ugly ass models in games

    http://www.massively.com/2009/09/23/fallen-earths-females-get-a-more-feminine-facelift/

theres the proof,..this crap would appeal to nobody in the world accept for these nerds in america wanting their females to look like soccer moms and pudgy

If by, 'Better overall design', you mean, 'horrible boring grindfest with as much depth as a kiddie pool', then yes. Korean MMOs are light years ahead of the ones made in the west.

But hey, if you like sitting there wanking off to images of barely legal women with unrealistic proportions while killing the same mob again for the 50,000th time, then be my guest.

Oh, and just the fact you even mentioned Naruto in a positive way is pretty much proof  that you have almost no idea what a quality product is. Next thing I know you'll be extolling the virtues of Inuyasha *snicker*

    I see...

So, why do you think  AION, Tera, Blade&Soul, Mabinogi Heroes and C9 "Suck Ass"?

Be honest ... you never experienced these games right?

So.. they "Suck Ass" becouse? Don't tell me the reason is that you belive these games doesn't have "depth" as you are using a signature related to Champions online...

So.. if a game does not appeals to you then the game "Suck Ass"?

Eastern MMOs (From the upcoming FFXIV to AION and Tera) are and will be leading the MMO industry when we talk about design, technology, presentation and production value.

Guild Wars 2 will be a nice example of a creation with western and eastern influence.
