EQ2 Release date WILL NOT BE NOV 8th

p00kap00ka Member Posts: 167

Well we had the shipping date announced today, but we still don't have an official release date posted on the official forum. Today's press release only confirms the shipping date as being set for November 8th. Most people on the official forum are speculating that the release will be Tuesday, November 9th (the usual release day for most retailers), but this doesn't leave a lot of time for shipping. Unless SoE ships next day to EVERY U.S. retailer, the boxes won't arrive at the same times across the country.

I know it's still too early to speculate, but I'm afraid that even November 9th might be a bit optimistic. SoE will have to eat a HUGE up-front shipping cost to deliver boxes to all the stores in 24 hours.

So, until an official statement is released, take what you see in this (and other) forums with a grain of salt - many are already reporting that the release date will be November 8th, which is obviously impossible. Midnight sales are also unlikely - if the boxes ship on the 8th, they will not hit the shelves by 11:59pm on the same day. Expect the official release date to be on or after November 9th until official statements are seen on the SoE forums.

Well I just saw on the Everquest II web site that they will ship on the 8th and I called my local EB and they said they will get my copy on the 9th (I'm in Canada).  Looks good to me.

SONY ONLINE ENTERTAINMENT’S  EVERQUEST® II SHIPPING NOVEMBER 8th
-The 800-Pound Gorilla of Online Gaming Is Ready to Play -

SAN DIEGO, CA – October 25, 2004 – Sony Online Entertainment Inc. I'm well aware of today's press release, as stated in my original post. I would like to direct your attention to the following excerpt:

"Sony Online Entertainment Inc. (SOE), a worldwide leader in massively multiplayer online (MMO) gaming, today announced that EverQuest II is scheduled to simultaneously ship to North American and European retail stores on November 8, 2004."

It also DOES NOT mean the game will release on the 8th. This DOES NOT mean the game servers will go live on the 8th. They HAVE NOT announced a release date - only a ship date. They HAVE NOT given us a date when the beta ends, nor when the live servers go online.

They are merely shipping the game from SoE to the retailers on the 8th. Some time after the 8th, they will arrive at the retailers doorsteps. Some time after that, they will arrive in the hands of players - first those that buy at their local shop, then to those who chose to order online.

So, like I said... Not the 8th. When? We won't know until they post it.

    Now that WOULD be comical....

Imagine what will happen if they ship the game on the 8th but they dont open the servers until like the 22nd.

    Yikes!!!

    lol, that would suck

Opening your box, isntalling the game then relizing login servers will be down until the 22nd.

However, In all honesty I dont expect a smooth launch in the first 2 days anyways..it's gonna be rough.

lol omg... Ok let me repeat myself even more clearly....

If they ship to retailers on the 8th (quoted from many posts on the forums, as well as their press release,) then you cannot buy it and play the game until it is available for purchase.

I am simply saying that shipping to retailers (aka "ship date") and available for purchase and play (aka "release date") are two totally different things. Furthermore, there is the issue of when the servers are online and ready for play (which is assumed to be the release date - but we don't know because that date has not been announced.)

If SoE ships on the 8th, the retailers WILL NOT GET IT ON THE 8TH. It's impossible. You cannot get same day delivery to thousands of locations in the US.

As for Moorgard's post, clearly he is speaking of the ship date - not the date I can go buy and play the game. THAT is what I would call the release date.

pooka, your beating a dead horse with a stick my friend

The game is released on November the 8th so chances are the servers will be open on November the 8th.

Based on 100% of all 10 mmorpgs Ive played in the last 10 years, every single mmorpg I bought the day it was available at the stores, the server was ready to take in players. The only exception being Anarchy Online (which was a technical mishap more than the servers being "turned on")

The game is release on November the 8th, the servers will be up on November 8th. They wont sell you a game to just stare at it for a week or even two days for that matter.

And for FFXI...I did get that game the same day it was released to EB. They do use same day and next day air image

pooka..We KNOW the difference between the Ship date and the Server opening date (Which for SOE was the same day in the past) as En1gma stated! You are only ranting on trying to get a point across thats irrelevant to what we are saying about the SHIP date...

Then again your spamming us IS getting your postcount up...keep up the good work, but IMO...STFU!!

So, Nov. 8th is when the game would be available to play, since it will be available for purchase on Nov. 8th.
I would presume SOE is shipping the game before Nov. 8th, far enough in advance for it to arrive in stores on time.

Amen! See pooka..It wasn't so hard was it now to figure that out image

The simple answer is: SOE WILL ship it out so it DOES arrive on the release date mentioned. Tada..no more post counts for pooka image

You guys are COMPLETELY missing my point. 100% of the press releases state that the game is being SHIPPED TO RETAILERS on Nov 8th. If that is the case, they WILL NOT go on sale on the 8th. What's so hard to understand about that? Exactly 0% of the press releases have stated when the game will be available for purchase and play. So it is my assumption, since wormhole shipping technology does not exist yet, that it will take AT LEAST a day for the game to hit store shelves.

As for my comments on when the servers go live, I am simply using that to illustrate the following point: We do not know the "go live" date yet - so one cannot infer the date when the game can be purchased based on that information. Assuming (FOR EXAMPLE) we knew the game went live on Nov 9th, we could deduce that the game goes on sale on that date - since every game in history goes live the same day that it hits the shelves. However, since we lack that information, we cannot make such an assumption. And since all we have is the ship date (Nov 8th), we cannot assume how much time it will take for stores to get the game on the shelf.

It's totally irrelevant to announce a "ship date" like this - why don't they just say when the game goes live, or when I can buy it? There's so much less confusion that way. There is absolutely no purpose in telling the community when the game is shipping to the stores - it is totally useless information.

Just a side note - notice how Blizzard sates when the game will Launch - so much less confusion. I don't know, nor do I care when the UPS guy picks the boxes up from Irvine.

I am seeing Pooka's point here, lets use movies for example, retail stores recieve the videos "before" they actully come out, sometimes up to a week before the movie is actully released, so they may physicaly be AT EBGames November 9th, but they "could" be in the backroom waiting for the date marked on the box to be stocked..

Exactly - SoE has never said when the game will launch or go on sale. If it's going to be launched on the 8th, why not just come out and say it in plain english, rather than using ambiguous and irrelevant language such as "shipping to retailers."

I am currently playing the beta and am very exited by what I've seen so far. However, unless they have a HUGE fix in the works (I'm assuming they do) this game wont be ready for comercial release by the 8th. Remember the "Galaxies" release awhile back? EQ2 is in a similar state to what I remember from the beta of that game. Well, maybe not that raw, but close.

This IS semantics and you ARE an idiot. The servers will be up on the 8th, retail outlets close to the source will get sameday service and might get their boxes on the 8th, everyone else will get their box presumably by the 9th, and NO FUCKING RETAILER is going to put a game this hot into the back room, they will boost them out the door as soon as they can.

If I'm not playing this game on the 9th I'll eat my hands. Now STFU.

    Sure they could have:

"Sony Online Entertainment Inc. (SOE), a worldwide leader in massively multiplayer online (MMO) gaming, today announced that EverQuest II is scheduled to launch at 12:00pm PST on November X, 2004"

Perhaps it is just a matter of semantics. But why the hell would their marketing team be so careless with a press release? I'm a software developer - I don't claim to know much about marketing. But it seems that their statement just lacks clarity. If it's due to come out on the 8th, why the world wouldn't you leverage that???

    Then explain this scenario:

UPS guy comes to pick up a huge shitload of EQ2 boxes at SoE HQ on 11/08. When do they arrive on the shelves in LA? How about NY? Florida?

If you are playing the game on 11/08, then they shipped prior to 11/08 - contrary to the statements made in the press release.
