2009: The age of starved mmorpg players

I really wish there were more sci-fi oriented MMO's out there. I personally don't really like the fantasy oriented realm of current MMOs such as WoW or WAR or any of the other dozens of MMO's out there that replicate the old age fantasy world akin to JRR Tolkein. Maybe it's cause I was raised in a different generation or something but it seems like the MMO genre really lacks in the sci-fi arena. Not sure if anyone else feels the same way. I grew up loving things like Star Wars or Star Trek and watching shows like Stargate and Battlestar Galactica. I had great fun playing games like Starcraft, Starlancer, Freelancer, the entire X-wing series, Mass Effect. I know SWG and EVE are out there but they are both very flawed MMO's and neither are nearly as popular as some of the fantasy based MMOs like WoW. EVE is just too slow and as I'm told akin to playing with spreadsheets in space. I feel like if you're going to play a game that's revolved around space ships and battlecruisers and the like, why make combat boring? The death penalty for that game is obscene and ridiculous. I don't want to play for a whole month to earn a ship and only have it lost forever because everyone is ganking each other in space. Combat seems to take place far to far in between which makes it even more boring as it seems that nothing exciting happens because everyone is afraid of losing their ship that they worked for months to acquire.Thankfully there are a whole bunch of sci-fi MMO's coming out like SWTOR, STO, and JGE, but I hope that at least one of them is an immense success. Nowadays it seems like if MMO's don't succeed in it's first couple months its doomed to fail and be forgotten. If too many bugs or if the developers are not responsive enough to the community, the subscription rates can quickly drop off and revenue sources would run out. MMO's seem like an immensely risky operation as developers are expected to create these entire worlds and universes that can easily contain double or triple the content of a normal single player game on release. If it fails in it's first couple months then recouping those costs can be very difficult as once a player base disappeared it's almost impossible to regain it, even if you release new content and fix all the bugs. Once a MMO's name is tainted then players will forever see it as a tainted game. Maybe an MMO can beat that cycle, but unfortunately it just seems like this is the way the market is and how the consumers for these markets react to these new MMO's. In this day and age MMOs need to perform above and beyond in order to hook an audience for the long term. They need to have something that no other MMO already has and expand on all the goods and cut out all the boring stuff about MMO's. Things like grinding and gold farming, or working for forever to get some piece of armor only to have it decay or be lost. I play games to have fun, not as a second job that I have to pay for in order to 'enjoy'. The point of MMO's is to be able to play cooperatively with others or competitively in a fun way. How awful would paintball be if everytime you got shot you had to sit out for the entire day or if you lost your gun and had to buy a new one to play again. You play so that you can have some fun with friends and not be limited on the amount of fun to be had. Adding those unnecessary costs and burdens on players would just make the game so boring and time consuming that it wouldn't be cool to continue to pay the company.

@ DarkJedi007; Chill mate, im a scifi buff myself (more into pulp fiction golden age stuff than the popular series, to each his own) and as youve said yourself, new releases are coming up. EVE is actually much more than you give it credit for (dont play it myself because of its business model) if you can get past the steep learning curve youd probably enjoy it. Try Fallen Earth, you might like it. Or SWG if youre deadset against fantasy. Scifi is yet to come of age in MMOs but the options are there, ive seen some science fiction stuff on the games list on this site, look through the reviews. Things are bad yea, but it isnt like you cant find a decent game.

    Just to make things clear...
I speak for myself and no one else, unless i state otherwise mine is just an opinion. A fact is something that can be independently verified, you may challenge such but with proof. You have every right to disagree with me through sound argument, i believe in constructive debate, but baseless aggression will warrant an unkind response.

However it is now 2009, and most gamers who have played MMO's for any period of time would agree that nothing on the market today can even live up to these original releases.
Nostalgia aside, when critically examining these games, it appears as though with each new release the games are being dumbed down; It reminds me alot of the Mike Judge movie: Idiocracy where overtime people became dumber and dumber as technology allowed them more and more luxeries.
What I have been wondering is why no games with depth and challenge have been introduced to the market since 2003; The closest we have come is darkfall (don't get me started on that tangent) and in many ways I don't even feel as though, it has lived up to it's potential.
Am I the only one who feels like this? Is that why there are no more deep challenging games on the market? What do you guys think?

I agree. It is sad that developers have sacrificed gameplay for graphix. In this day and age we should be able to have both, but  as long as people accept poo on a platter they will keep serving it.

Lots of doom and gloom. Most people in here seem to be either unaware or purposely ignore the reason for a developer or a publisher to invest in an MMO. Its to make a profit, not to re-invent the wheel.

What people want developers give. Unfortunately [or fortunately depending on your stance] the current MMO formula seems to work with a significant portion of people that is enough to make it worth investing, but the high development costs means no publisher or developer is willing to take a risk in exploring new ideas. Its a purely economic Rick versus Return issue.

However, as the world becomes more seamless and connected, and as development tools become more streamlined, affordable and accessible, we should start to see some innovative projects made by unique individuals. Not MMOs though, those are much harder to manage. Not anytime soon atleast.

Improve Aion's Graphics with a simple text file that you can create by yourself:

-Increase in-game Field of View to 175% or more

-Increase view distance for players to 100 meters with camera at max distance

    -Lots of other settings

Learn how by reading this guide at Aionsource

No offense to some people, but the genre has changed. Either change with it or move on to something you actually do enjoy until a game comes along that fits you, or go back to the " old" games you do enjoy. If EQ, AC, ect. were so great why are complaining about WoW, Aion, ect when THOSE games are still up and running, go play em if you like em so much.

I really loved the my 1967 Camero that I had 30 years ago. Mine had a 350, 4 speed, Black and fast but I would rather have a 2009 Camero. I just wish morphs would progress faster. I WILL buy the not finished games that come out because im always looking for that next great game so i am as guildty as the rest of you at tossing money at UNFINISHED GAMES and we do have the power if we worked together to stop that but that will never happen. Also it keeps those possibly good beta games from dying wit hthe early money coming in so maybe it's a good thing.
