This will be a very new and intriguing game, but its just so hard to know if it will be able to compete with WoW, and EQ2, hopefully it can, but ya never know.  By the way, thanks for the great links, game looks great!

when will open beta for everyone start?

is it downloadable or need to buy instaler cd?

how much the monthly cost when p2p?

  • blacksacblacksac Member Posts: 1,045

No open Beta, the Devs want to hand pick the people that are testing.

The game will be downloadable almost free in the first few months, after that it will be in stores (at a cost). It appears it will be a World wide release.

It will have a monthly cost that will be similar to other games coming out at this time.

Due to it not being a big name, like EQ2 or WoW, I can see it suffering some in sales. But looking at the features, the game blows the other two away. I hope it delivers on them at release.

Another BIG bonus for D&L is it is designed for pvp. It won't be some afterthought only allowed on specific servers, but geared for massive pvp battles from the beginning. I know that won't appeal to everyone, but I like a little pvp with my online adventures. Keeps things interesting.

I have a feeling DnL will be like Eve Online in the way that it kinda had a slow start but seems to grow a player base month after month.  I for one think that it will eventually win out over WoW and EQ2.   Too bad for DnL that Vanguard is just around the corner LOL.

    FYI:

Gary Gygax, famous father of the Pen & Paper Role playing Game genre, creator of the Dungeons and Dragons will be helping with the development of Dark and Light!

From the info provided, the game looks to be a refreshing change to the scene.

But being the critic i am, i want to know a little about the mechanics. mainly dealing with combat.

So my question is how will D&L do this.

Will it be behind the scenes dice rolls hoping you hit a target, where when you cast a spell it zooms around and chases you. Same with the arrows.

Example, i was in a pvp battle in WOW beta, a guy shot a arrow at someone near me. The guy moved and i watched the arrow turn 45o to hit this guy.

This example of mechanics are paper rock scissors. The bigger sword wins no matter what.

    Auto combat.

No skill really except who can kite.

Or will it have a real time hit system like morrowind 4 oblivion or spells and archery like in Asheron's call dm. If you swing your axe or sword, your weapon has to hit the target literally to cause damage. Or if you miss, you miss plain and simple. No  starting a fight and walk away to make a sandwich to come back to see you still swinging on a mob or a player. ( plain exaggeration but you get the idea)

Some call it twitch gaming, I look at it as giving the player a realistic feel for the game. Spells and arrows should be dodgeable blockable. I have a shield let me use it.

How does Dark and Light deal with these type of issues.

    Good question!

    PvP in general:  http://ap.ofganareth.com/forum/index.php?act=ST&f=22&t=258&s=6214b54a8e5846b08a7634994282d2e3

What we know so far about combat:

This nice summary is taken from the official community boards.

Thanks goes to Ansgar Isen - Acting Guildleader - Blood Pact:

"For my taste, if you go and collect all the bits and pieces delivered so far, information on combat is more than a little.
While we don't know about the details really, there's quite a bit information on how combat is set into the world, which is much more important to me right now.
So what do we know already?

    -Real world topography
This is affecting the way combat will be like in DnL bigtime. Having a real topography that is influencing character movement automatically means that in combat, there will be real use of terrain. This to me is a biggie, as it's something I'm missing very much in other games. this opens a wide variety of opportunities on the tactical level, leading away from pseudo tactics we see in other titles.

    -Collision detection
It is said that there will be collision detection in DnL. This means you will have the ability to use it in combat to build formations, block enemy forces, protect ranged characters, etc. Some other games resolve this via special abilities or powers. I think this should be handled "naturally", just by the way you place yourself or move, though, just like it seems to be in DnL.

    -Ranged weapons
This has already been mentioned. I will still repeat it, to make this information somewhat complete for what I know. Ranged Weapons will use ballistics and a full line of flight (as opposed to LoS) system, thus taking all objects in the line into consideration. So you will be able to avoid for example arrow, by hiding behind a tree.
On the tactical level, this again means that you can make use of this, considering the choice of terrain or the use of formations.

    -Spellcasting
What we do know so far, if I remember right, is that directed spells will use line of sight and, at least partially, objects in the line as well. So this is similar to what has been said about ranged in general, just without the additional complexity of ballistics.
What I think to remember as well was some hints on AE spells, as far as there would be some and that they will influx the own forces as well, when used.

    -Environment
There has been some information on how the various effects of combat (impact of weapons, spells, etc.) will influence the environment as well. This means that objects can be altered (destroyed), earth can be shaking, throwing nearby characters to the ground and so on.

    -Flight
Flight will be more than pure transportation. With an ability for flying independently up to 4000m agl (if I remember well), there is a wide variety of using flight in connection to combat situations, starting from recon up to direct influence with weapons (I think ranged weapons can be used from some sort of mounts).

    -Melee
There's not a host of information on melee so far. What is known is how about the weapon skills will evolve by use of the respective weapons.
Into consideration for melee situations comes what has been said already about collision detection and the effect of objects and topography.

All in all, this is not that bad information so far. It's rather natural, that NPcube/AD doesn't leak that much information on details that are subject to balancing greatly at this stage. What is important to me right now, is to have the information that makes me able to decide if I will like the general system or not, - and hell, I do like it!

There will be lots of more bits and pieces I couldn't make myself think of right now, as well as I might remember some things wrong, so just see this as a start of collecting and an innovation for correction..."

Yes i seen a few post about the issues I've listed in my previous post by others there as well.

I belive that sort of combat is going to be added to other titles in the future and all ready on the drawing table now for some.

I seen that they are talking about adding a combo system. But from the sounds of it. Hit or miss is handled with behind the scenes dice rolls. Archery seems to be handled a bit more in depth.

I'm not sure if the arrow becomes a separate entity after fired or not. I know if you stand behind a tree it will strike the tree instead of your toon, but if a mate stands and try to take the arrow or shield me the arrow wont be taking by him but buy me through him.

They also stated they wouldn't make a fps type combat system and id think in order to really do a real time hit system they would have to make it a fps style combat system. Either way the system isn't set in stone yet, and they have hinted on descent ideas they could bring out player skill more then the likes of the newer titles out now. Plus all the other features like the kingdom step system and  siege warfare are exactly what I've been looking for.

I've recently left Shadowbane because of the newest expansion pack and am without a descent MMO game to play, since the market has nothing really in the way of  kingdom siege warfare pvping, well nothing worth a damn out. This title has my attention.

Especially the GM system. Looks like costumer support is a main issue for this title.

I was reading through an Interview, and noticed something about FPS in Dark and Light.  It said:
