The MMO "Fail-Train" keeps rolling....

ThomasN7ThomasN7 87.18.7.148Member CommonPosts: 6,690

Yup, not since the success of WOW has there been a MMO who has captured the hearts and excitement of the players. We been saturated with mediocrate which translates into major fail. In 2007 we had Lotro. Lotro won best MMO that year only because nothing else was out and Turbine took advantge of that. It was a false hope with just average gameplay and a boring world to play in. In 2008 we had the most epic fail year of all time, both AOC and Warhammer flopped big time. So much hope, so much hype and it all went down the tubes in a hurry.

Smaller mmos such as Champions Online and Fallen Earth tried to revive some mmo success but I'm afraid those just didn't quite cut the mustard either. Cryptic botched it up big time when they introduced their first patch and it hasn't been the same since, not to mention the microtransactions+monthly fees isn't exactly appealing either. Fallen Earth isn't that bad but I just don't see it being that kind of mmo where people are getting that excited about it. Then there was Aion. Now Aion has soome good points to it like the polish and beautifult world to play in but NCsoft forgot to make it interesting and fun to play not to mention it just copied what others had done before and just made it look prettier. The amount of gold farmers and bots in this game is horrendous despite the latest massive bans they been doing, its still infested. Server queue problems and too much lag for players is a major issue. It baffles me how NCsoft can get the Asian releases (which has over 2 mill players) correct but not the NA/EU players which has around 400k players. Yup, I'm still pondering that as we speak.

There might be some hope to the mmo genre eventually but I'm afraid the wait is way too long before we see that mmo success again. The MMO "Fail-Train" keeps rolling as mmo players desperately spend their money in order to keep hope alive.

Disclaimer: This is my opinion, feel free to agree or disagree with my vision.

Most MMOs are out of hope now, being F2P or using micro transactions allow a game to have a small player base and survive financially as long as they get a small core addict base that can spend crap loads of money on randomly generated bits to feel like winners... inside a virtual environment.

Just shows how the trend of MMOs changed from the massive pay-to-have-fun world vision into more of a restrict virtual pay-to-win trend... with companies that don't even bother about developing their own game, just grab some random korean F2P game and bring it here, skip the development step and go right to the profit step, that's what these publishers are in my opinion, rotting the MMO genre.

Can't even compare it to the last decade in which we would have just a few solid titles around, the market has been completely flooded with low-budget generic titles now.

To be honest he has a point.

Though i thought age of conan was a good game, it was majorly flawed, and patches made the game worse.

All MMOs these days have one of these flaws:

    - Lack of Content

    -Choppy, edgy, unsmooth graphics

-Boring, repetitive, and same old same old combat mechanics

    -Theme Park leveling

-Going from a worthless piece o' shit to an average piece o' shit.

What i hate is, they all do the same, they all hold back the exciting content, be it PvP areas, Dungeons, Building, etc etc until atleast midway through the game, slowly funneling you content so that you will spend longer on the game.

And lets face is, the majority of MMOs do that, content funnel, theres been very few times when i've looked at a game and thought, wow, thats pretty nice.

Age of conan had nice graphics, a good fight system (fast paced, more controlled combat, with sprinting, combos, double tap jumping to dodge, and active shielding)

Not everyone's definition of MMO success or failure is the same.

    1. AoC is steadily growing... (Obviously an mmo making money and growing enough to release an expansion is not a FAIL )

    2. Warhammer ...Yeah, I dont know anything about that one.

    3. LotRO ... How can you call a game that sold enough lifetime accounts at launch and has a strong enough IP Fanbase to keep it running forever a FAIL ?

    4. Aion ... That game isn't anywhere close to a FAIL, not its launch (Very very successful launch)  not the game as it is right now, the servers are packed enough right now that there are queues to log in most times of the day on most servers. and its obvious that the amount of time you spent complaining about Aion compared to the single line every other game received in your post, that this entire post is nothing more than something happened in your time playing Aion that your pissed and now want people to feel the same way you do. But whats funny is that the moment you calm down (probably already happened) you'll be right back there logged into Aion enjoying a really good game again.

I guess the definition of FAIL = OP didnt like it.

Aion is a good solid game with millions of players that just released in the US less than a month ago. Fallen Earth has fewer players but is still a fun game with great potential and again, it only released about a month ago. Both of these games have had hiccups during the launch process but I believe both released in the same if not better shape than WoW. The lag in WoW at launch was so bad it would take 5 minutes to loot a corpse and the downtime was so often that Blizzard had to give refunds for days the game was unavailable. Remember when WoW released it had no organized PvP or Raid content. Aion and FE both have PvP available and both will eventually have more end game PvE.

Just another rant from a person who cant find a mmo that intrest them and then makes a thread talking about something being wrong with the entire industry. If there is nonthing that intrest you then wait or find something else to do. I mean how many of these a day are we going to get? You look in general chat now and all you see are post like this. There are so many good MMOs out there to play right now.

Wouldn't it be great if there were an auto-ban feature for anyone using the word "fail"?  Without a doubt, once that word enters the equation, you can be fairly certain that what you're reading is nothing but a waste of time, the rants of a whiny little kid.

  • ThomasN7ThomasN7 87.18.7.148Member CommonPosts: 6,690

I understand that not everything people post on here is not 100% correct and thats fine. That also includes the things that I post and thats all fine. If people want to keep on making excuses for mmos just because they want to hype the genre to make money or they just have a favorite mmo they feel they need to defend, thats all fine too. As long as people keep on accepting mediocrate then that is what companies will keep on doing and taking your money with a big smile on their face. If some do not want better mmos in the future that is all fine too.

Wouldn't it be great if we had people who actually lended some contsrtuctive criticism to the mmo genre instead of assuming every post is froma  whiny little kid ?  Noone says you have to agree with me but if you are going to post something let it be something of use to everyone.

And making statements along the lines of every MMO released since WoW is a FAIL is of use to everyone? Very "contsrtuctive" as you would say.

Maybe you could explain to the rest of us how your little rant was "constructive".  What is it you were actually hoping to accomplish?

If you require posts to be constructive, you should start by removing this thread.

A failed MMO would be one that was NOT profitable and they closed down ALL the servers. None on your list fits that criteria.

WoW's success was an aberration. An anomaly. A freak show that will probably never be duplicated.

Because Blizzard did something REALLY unusual and made a game for the "Masses" with their lowbie PC's. Every game since WoW has had higher PC requirements or freaking extremely high requirements.

Low PC requirements =  Mainstream game that millions can play in the US.

High PC requirements= Niche game that can only get a few 100 thousands in the US.

It's THAT simple. I'm not slamming WoW. It's a brilliantly made game. But, the other games aren't failures because they aren't really  competing with WoW. If they were competing with WoW, they'd have made a game that required in a PC:

Pentium 1.3 ghz CPU and 512 mb Ram and 32 mb Video card:)

WoW's PC requirements means it has "MILLIONS of potential customers"

LoTRO's, Wars and AoC's requirements mean they have " a few HUNDRED thousand potential customers".

    Just my 2 cents,

    Lori

    I see.

Although my impression is the MMO cup has almost completely dried up...so I guess I'm siding with the OP in this argument.

Nice to see that some people still find MMOs today enjoyable though...because there is a lot of us that certainly don't...=/

Due in part to the fact that as a MMO gamer with many choices, you have become stale and prickly. Nothing is going to bring you back to your MMO hayday, and nothing will reinvent the wheel for MMOs. So a large portion of people are always going to be dissatisfied. You're overall outlook on what an "acceptable" MMO would be much MUCH easier to change than the direction of the entire genre.

This disregarding the blatent fails like AOC or Tabula rasa which just failed to keep a playerbase alltogether.

Yup, people who play and enjoy a well-crafted and proven game rather than repeatedly jumping on every passing bandwagon are just teh funneh.

I dont like WoW but i do agree that it is a well made game and a fun one to those with the right playing style.

I feel the time for the big time mass appeal MMO are over.

We will have nothing but small niche focused mmos from now on and honestly I think its for the best.

We don;t need another WoW that turns the genre into a bunch of clones that want a piece of Blizzards pie.

Small companies making good games for around 50-500k players is just fine.

    PLaying: EvE, Ryzom

    Waiting For: Earthrise, Perpetuum
