The sky really is the limit here as technology continues pushing forward. There is always the possibility that WOW will be looked at as the "heyday" of MMOs. Their subs are just on that level. Plain and simple. But none of us are fortune tellers, so who's to say it can't happen again.

Either way I'm incredibly excited for the coming next few years. At some point I'm sure WOW will start dropping numbers to a degree noticeable by even the most stubborn of fans. I am also aware the game will be around for long, long after that. I'm not blind. But someday when the piece of pie starts to shrink, think of all the other games new and old alike that will start showing decent signs of growth.

Imagine how great it will be when we don't have one single game hogging the majority of fans.

I dont think any game will ever achieve WoW's numbers in my lifetime. WoW is a freak of nature.

No it wasn't a freak of nature, it was simply the biggest thing to come into a scene with little to no competition at the time.  It was the latest and greatest to come in against what?  EQ? AC? DAoC? UO?  Most of those games were either dying or hanging on to players just because they didn't like the competition.  All of those fell within the same genre but each was lacking something the other had.  WoW consolidated alot of that (Although yes they took that content by copying many of the previous examples) and gave it a nice story line, did a good job of balancing pve and pvp content, had mounts flying or otherwise (everyone loves a mount), had a sizeable world, had the Blizzard name behind it (big following), etc.

The largest problem today that MMOs face is the competition because is divides the pie up that much more which means you'd have to offer something even more broad and encompassing than it's predecessors and that's AFTER you have many of the things going for you that were mentioned in WoW...(Company with a great reputation, polished game, etc.)  This is the issue facing Aion and others coming out after...sure you can be polished until you're a beacon of light, but unless you are bringing something completely new that makes everyone look at it like a second sun just rose up in the sky, then you're having to compete for an already spread out player base.

You should have learned that you should never say never.  Never is one of those words that should not be used lightly.

I agree that it is very unlikly we will ever see the "next big one" but you cannot say never because nobody knows what the future holds.

Having paid a close attention to the development and evolution of the video game industry and MMOs in particular, I say NEVER SAY NEVER!!

But then again, none of us can see the future, and while predicting it is fun, it always leads to someone being wrong. That person, as history has taught us, is ALWAYS the person that says "Never gonna happen."

    Just remember two things:

    1) People said that there would never be a bigger MMO than Ultima Online 10 years ago.

    2) Starcraft Universe Anybody? ;)

People say a lot of things now about UO, but WoW has been big (1 million plus subs) for many years, unlike UO, which seems to be pitched by EA at a retro-game niche market, yes they are obviously developing still for that and it must make them money somehow or other. Might also be worth considering that Blizzard have stated that their next gen mmo won't be based on Diablo or Starcraft, and that makes sense considering they are releasing these (and their expansion) over the timeline during which next gen mmo will gradually emerge, I'd bet we get a name next year from them. Best to play games at face value and move on when they get dull, I don't play either UO or WoW today.

Don't confuse issues with your "facts".  I want to live in my fantasy world where Starcraft Universe will exist :P Ty for the response, I hadn't read that. I will definately give Blizzard's next MMO a shot though.

You mean 180.  Because 360 would be right back where they were in the first place.

A really good version of The Sims Online could get some massive subscriber base, and afaik it's the only game that has outsold WoW. I also think a Civilization-themed game could introduce a lot of new gamers to MMO's due to the well known IP, but I have no idea of how they would make it into and MMO..

People seem to think that WoW was destined to greatness, but those of us that were there at the start know that it was not much different than anything else when it launched, and the great success is mostly due to it being the right product at the right time. The "next big one" may or may not come, but I'm pretty sure it will sneak up on us, just as WoW did :)

Not really.   Current design of cbs and components are already pushing heat limits, and sending signals over 2 inches at speeds faster than 6 Ghz is not ideal.   Hence, the reason you see more and more development into using multiple processors to improve performance.

I think the " improvement ball " has shifted towards software, and ISPs.   Unfortuneatly, ISPs are in an absolute terrible state ( US ), and software isn't much better.

Everquest Next is the "next big one" and is rumored to be coming out in 2010.  There are people already giving away gear and deleting their characters in other games; that's how sure they are of "EQ Next."

You know SOE has a development studio that SHOULD be making their next MMORPG...Naughty Dog Studios. They just released Uncharted 2,as far as i am concerned, everything they have done over the years is pretty darn good.As of now they have the studio locked up to developing PS3 software, but man they are holding them back. They have 100 employees that would be a perfect sized staff for a great MMORPG.

No question SOE has gained a lot of distrust lately,so they should open up to some new blood,i mean ND studios has done great things for them with Jax and Bandicoot and Uncharted, why limit their abilities to console only.989 studios is another good one under the realm of SOE,but they are also locked into console making.

I think SOE has a ton of potential locked under their roof, but i don't think that former UO guy is one of them,he has done ok with all the EQ2 xpacs, but i'd like to see one of those two studios i mentioned do the next game.

On a side note, there next MMORPG is not an Everquest game,it is a game based from Virgin comics.Supposedly some East Indian type of game...who knows Sinbad anyone? lol.Virgin comics has a movie due in a couple years by the same guy who did 300,so maybe they are making a mmorpg base on something centered around that movie[Ramayan].

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

If i was guessing what MMO would be "the next big one" i would say Guild Wars 2.Runes of Magic a very average free mmo( to put nicely) has 2 million subs.Guilds Wars 2 after the box price is free,Guild War will hold more of "its hype players" than any other mmo.Unlike most mmo you would be able to play Guild Wars 2 and another mmo.Players don't have to pick between WoW and GW 2 you can play both same time because no monthly fee for GW.

GW 2 has all the elements

-Possibly the best devs at balancing pvp classes and Is know for being very good pvp game.

-Guild Wars is very story driven game and has very soild PVE

    - GW2 fixes the probelms people had with original GW no persistant world,no jumping or swimming, etc

-Guild wars was never grindy game,Guilds Wars has companion system which is a good way to make a game solo-able with out taking from group play

-GW is back by NcSoft which has more than enough money to support it(Especially with Aion doing so well)

-GW has no monthly fee so you can play it along with another MMO

That is my case for GW2 being "the next big one".

It was a freak of nature in that WoW pretty much single-handeldy moved the genre from niche to mainstream. There are so many choices out that it seems impossible that players from all these games are going to suddenly migrate to the one greatest game out there. It's highly unlikely in my opinion. You can't make the genre become mainstream again.
