ugh this thread gave me a headache. TBH the reason most of the eve players are saying "you just don't get the game" is because .... that's exactly the problem. I mean even if someone did take the time to type up an essay explaining all the issues the OP has, he would still say it sucks. Because he just doesn't get it (also because hes trolling), i like the skill queue.... it allows me to take a break every now and then and still progress my character. I don't need to log on and grind mobs and quests to level up, i can just log on, get some pvp action, chat with friends then log off. Most of the time when i log in to eve i pvp, socialize and have fun. I rarely ever worry about my skills because i'm busy doing other things. Autopilot is great for highsec imo if you don't feel like traveling a long distance while being at the keyboard, even if you want to sit at the keyboard, you can get to places manually in an acceptable amount of time (imo) especially since i get to enjoy the game on just one server. PVP is much more then just watching your weapons fire, which is one of the main misconceptions and my only refute to it is to watch the videos in this link
I've been playing since February and i've been flying ships i like flying since april. I understand that i cant fly every ship i want to in the beginning, luckily though for me there is plenty of other ships i want/enjoy flying before i reach those other ships. EVE is a casual game a carebear game and a hardcore game. It just depends on what you do in it that decides which part of it you are playing.

Eve would suck so much with an active skill system. Imagine needing to shoot a lazer a million freaking times to upgrade that skill? Or taking enough EM damage to armor to raise that resist?
Op what your asking of Eve would destroy the game.
I understand your deal, You want to have an advantage in game over casuals because you can log in most of the day. EQ has you thinking Time played equals win.
In EQ you would log in over what 15 hours a day? level up super fast and have a massive advantage over all the people that had lives.
Roaming around owning people with your super hardcore guild in EQ was just as Ezmode as a person playing WoW on a pve server.
I'm sorry but thats freaking carebear shit.
You don't get Eve because you want it to be EQ.
EQ still exists go play it and stop trolling a game you know next to nothing about.
Look, the only way you're going to understand why people think what they do about Eve is to actually play the game. Get involved in PvP, Corps, and 0.0 Space. People are incapable of explaining Eve, because to everyone it means something different. Now you have to decide if that knowledge is worth the time and money commitment, and if not, my advice is to just drop the conversation, and go your own way. And yes, grinding NPC missions like you're doing is exceptionally boring. The real thrill of Eve thrives on conflict between players, whether that is in politics, market, or battle. Battle Strategy in Eve is in ship choice, rigging/fits, and combat tactics. And I think you overplay the importance of skill-training to be honest. They're noticeable, but not always the deciding factor in battle.
I think eve is more carebear then most games now. Not Carebear like WoW though. Buy a few manuals, click a few times, then log back a week later and your skills have increased. In most games you actually have to put up some effort to gain some skill progression.
Then the travelling sucks bigtime. Again click a few times wait a while and you are there (only if you avoid low-secs). The OP is pretty much right about everything he said. Though ofcourse there are people who like this game, but not me.
I don't think you understand that it costs money to buy the things necessary to learn the skills. For more advanced skills it can cost upwards of a few million ISK.
And I'm not entirely sure what your definition of carebear is. Because For some reason, you seem to think that learning skills somehow assciates with how combat-non-focused the game is. Just because You don't have to fight to gain skills, doesn't mean you don't fight. If you die, you could lose EVERYTHING. If your pod explodes you could lose all your skill points. There are people who go around looking to do that just for the hell of it. Ganking is not nearly as frustrating in any other game I have played. Ships you spent weeks getting, gone. All the inventory you were stocking up, gone. All hte turrets you spent so much time saving up for, gone. All your skills, gone. All these can go away if you're not careful. Of course if you are careful, you can counter and reverse the odds. That's why it's fun. It's always a learning experience.

Eve fanboys be trollin'. Can't stand it when someone talks bad about the perfect and omnipotent Eve Online.
Ive played eve on and off again for 3 years. My longest stint just finished. I stopped paying for my 2 accounts(although most of the time i payed with isk) and i probably wont go back atleast not for a good 3-6 months. Alot of new games to try both on and offline mmo and not. When i get bored and want the familiar i will probably go back to eve. Just like the TROLL OP will log back into his WOW account. Im not an eve fan boy i see its down falls but this OP has no understanding of a game that has its own completely diffrent style within the genre he likes to play. Eve isnt perfect no game is.
Decoy your post has no merit or value please insert another quarter and try again.
I think it's hard to complain at CCP since they offer EvE Online as a trial now. I do think, though, that some players might get sucked into it for months even if it is not there their game, have a frustrating time, spend a bunch of bucks on subs and end up quitting in frustration based on niche hype from within the game's community. I think due to its age and many patches some of what is present in the game right now is very obsolete, surely a true statement as the developers are going to try to revitalise EvE Online content in their next expansion:
"However due to its decaying age, it wasn't keeping on par with modern standards anymore, especially with their so-called "security", so I sadly had to get away from it before they would start taxing me extra for driving a car that was morally painted as a hearse. You know who I am referring to."
Quote is from CCP. To the new player the EvE Online universe might be quite daunting with many pitfalls and mistakes they can make, finding the inner game niche and an uber corp quite a tricky task. That written OP is a flame, so I can understand the negativity they have received too.
Now, I just want to say this...Of course some of it is dated. The game was made years ago. That's why they are changing it. But the skill system is not one of those things. They can't have it any other way. it would break the game. A game evolves over time and that's what's happening. They are changing things based on what happened in the past and adding things now because they can do what they couldn't earlier.
That's like saying that WoW was obsolete, so they balanced the classes in patches.
It wasn't obselete. The classes just needed tweaking after the game was released.

You don't get Eve because you want it to be EQ. EQ still exists go play it and stop trolling a game you know next to nothing about.
Is EVE the only MMORPG you've ever played, that you have this shallow a viewpoint of the potential ways the skill system could be improved? Here are some methods with just 20 secs of thought put into them:
XP Investment style. Doing stuff gets you SP. Spend SP on skills.
Class Style. Predefined classes exist. Doing stuff gets you XP. Leveling up gives you a predetermined set of skills based on your class. (Alternatively, you choose 10 skills that gain significant amounts of SP each time you level - often ranking up each time you level.)
Purchase style. Skills just cost money. Naturally many of them are expensive enough that it takes many weeks/months of playing to afford them (or much shorter if you're particularly money-savvy.)
You're dumb to continually insist he wants an "advantage over the casuals". This is purely about wanting a connection between one's actions and one's advancement. Even in games that are totally not about progression your actions often translate into a score.
Even an EVE fanatic like yourself would probably concede that the solitary actions of a non-corp-aligned pilot are utterly meaningless -- more meaningless than actions in perhaps any other game. :P

EVE should just require some effort in terms of leveling skills up. How would requiring that destroy the game? Do you really think the fact that skills level up while offline makes any sense? What's the point in an MMORPG that you don't have to play?
You understand my deal? I work, I can't play all day. But when I do play an MMORPG, I want to actually have one where I have to play it and invest time in it. In EVE I would just be waiting around for the sluggish skill system to catch up to me. Sorry the dumb EVE developers couldn't foresee someone progressing through their content faster than 1 skill-up per week. I had enough ISK to afford like 10 of the ships I couldn't even fly because of the time requirements. How is that fun? Think I want to fly a newb ship around? Keep my account for a year or so maybe, and I will be at the same level as those casuals who barely log in and actually play the game.
EQ is better than EVE. In EQ, you log in and you actually play the game. You explore new zones, and level up, and you don't gain levels while being offline. You actually have to put some effort into leveling. In EVE it doesn't matter. It's the ultimate carebear, casual game. All they care about is how long you have a subscription to their game, they don't even care if you play it. It's the ultimate scam.
So you're saying people who like MMORPGs that require time investments don't have lives now? Yeah, some people like games they invest things into. Unlike EVE, other MMORPGs require that players invest some PLAYED TIME rather than OFFLINE TIME. At least playing other MMORPGs I affect the rate at which I can progress.
WTF am I gonna do with EVE? Keep a subscription for 2 years and get skills I want, then after 2 years I will log on and play it for a week to get enough ISK to buy what I want and actually be able to use it.
Sorry Carebear EVE doesn't support hardcore players like me. It supports people who put in a couple minutes every day, maybe that is their audience. Apparently you can't continuously play MMORPGs, playing an MMORPG 2-3 hours per day would be totally messed up according to CCP. EVE players only play 5 minutes per week maybe, do a quest, set up queue, log off.
Don't even try to compare the Zek servers to the carebear EVE game. On my server, you'd be lucky to pull off a raid without having someone on another team drop trains on you.
Unlike EVE, the server I played had PvP everywhere, it doesn't matter what zone you are in. You can make a level 1 character and someone will kill you right inside of town, and just grief you for hours.
Think you EVE people have it rough? Insurance? Lol.. Think there is insurance in EQ? No. If your raid gets trained, come back in a week. I guess EVE people dont understand raids, because they just like doing meaningless kill this pirate quests over and over.
EVE just doesn't offer a level playing field. You never have a chance to catch up to people who have always had accounts, their skill queue has been going for several years now. Good luck catching up with that. Think they had any skill to do that? No. They just had a subscription for a long time. At least in other games you can catch up.
Cheap subscription scam.. The game wasn't even fun when I played it. All you do is run ISK missions. There probably isn't anything like a raid in that game either. What do people look forward to? Having some skill train in as little as 2 years?
Sorry you EVE people don't want to play an MMORPG that requires some actual effort and time investment. You choose an easy MMORPG that just requires offline time and then try and pass it off as being a hardcore MMORPG that the rest of us can't understand.
Sorry you EVE people don't want to play an MMORPG that requires some actual effort and time investment. You choose an easy MMORPG that just requires offline time and then try and pass it off as being a hardcore MMORPG that the rest of us can't understand.
I do not mean this in any derogatory or negative way, but I don't think you do get it. For most people who do play Eve, the skill system is not their primary form of advancement.
And, Yes, I do think it could use a few tweaks, such as certain skills gaining SP a little faster the more they're being used, such as Small Energy Turrets. Just the basic skills that people would need to be able to fly the type of ship they want to a bit quicker, within reason (They tried alleviating this with the bonus training time till 800k points). But, I don't think they want to put any more emphasis than they already have on the skill-training system, because quite frankly, thats not the selling point of Eve.
I know EVE isn't the game for me. I played it. I found out first hand that I didn't enjoy it. In fact, I gave reasons why I dislike EVE. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, whether they love the game or hate the game. However, a lot of EVE-advocates have started insulting people who don't like the game, saying that if they don't like it, there's something wrong with them. That's not constructive. It certainly doesn't address the complaints people have made. I wish I could like EVE, it's one of the few successful science fiction games out there, but it's got far too many drawbacks for me to ever enjoy it. So I don't play and that doesn't make me a bad person.
You have to look no farther than the title of this thread to understand why Eve players quickly turn to insults. It's one thing to say "I don't like this game because..." its another things to say "this game sucks because..."

I think due to its age and many patches some of what is present in the game right now is very obsolete, surely a true statement as the developers are going to try to revitalise EvE Online content in their next expansion:
In a sandbox content doesn't become obsolete. It's one of the major advantages it has over other types of games. Everything adds to what was previously there, instead of replacing it.
The next expansion is rehashing how Sovereignty works because of future additions in the pipeline. They are rebuilding the structure system of it, not because its obsolete(its obviously not, there are plenty of people in nulsec participating in the system), but because its necessary to move in the direction they want it to move in.
If your trying to say T2 makes T1 useless, and T3 makes T2 useless. I think there are several hundred thousand Eve players that would very much disagree.
The main problem I have with this game is the skill training queue.. When I played EVE I remember having to wait weeks for my skills to catch up with the amount of ISK I was accumulating. Why did my ISK catch up? EVE seems to have been designed for people who like to log on for 5 minutes then queue 1 weeks worth of skills, then log off for another week. What kind of piece of shit model is this? Making people wait real life time, just simply doing nothing in real life except waiting for your character to catch up in skills. It's seriously one of the worst ideas ever. I don't mind MMORPGs being huge time sinks, or whatever.. But if I want to try out a game it's kind of unfair for any new players that they have to wait x amount of years just to fly a reasonable ship. It's like in EVE it doesn't matter how good you are, how much time you invest, etc. No matter what, you have to put up with the RL time limits they put on skill training. I don't understand why though, it's like if you get more ISK than you can spend, you can't do anything in EVE except get more ISK or wait for your skill queue to catch up. In any case, I think it's a bad idea for any MMORPG to put RL time limits on skills like that. They should be based on time input. You can't even play EVE continuously for long periods of time because eventually you will have to wait for your skill queue to catch up. Also, it's funny how so many sites display that EVE advertisement: 1 week, x ISK. 1 year, y ISK. Really, 1 year? I want to wait offline for a year to have that much ISK and that ship? Yeah that sounds fun. At least in EQ I can get 60 in 2 months if i'm hardcore enough EVE might've been playable had they gotten rid of the whole skill training system. Also, the whole travel system sucks in EVE. It's like, they will put shit 20 hops away.. and you just autopilot there anyway, so what's the point of that? There is no effort required in hitting Set Destination -> Whatever and going shopping. At least in other MMORPGs there is some effort required when you want to get from point A to point B. The whole world in EVE looks the same. Why couldn't they have made the world smaller and maybe more unique? Seriously, it's like they just change the names around of the graphics and its a new zone. Control over ships kind of sucks. First off, it's a point and click game, so it sucks right off the bat. The other thing that sucks is when you are fighting the controls are kind of lousy and it's like after you kill something some guns are on and some are off and you can't tell because the game sucks. Anyway, it is a unique MMORPG I guess but it pisses me off and sucks still. Mainly the skill training queue is what makes EVE such a horrible game. If I want to play a game where I just have to wait RL time periods I will play one of those horrible browser-based games (like that pos mybrute game)
There is only one thing I've seen here that sux's, and it has nothing to do with EVE
Your picture is wrong. Never had Chicago Deep Dish Pizza I guess :P

Okay, first off you obviously just fail at any kind of MMORPG that requires you do more than grind all day. EVE is very unique and when you actually attempt to progress in EVE you will. And what bothers me the most the way you insulted the advertisement if you actually mine while you train and have basic math skill you can make that much ISK and get that ship in that amount of time. Lazy, fat ass people like you really suck dick at doing anything that requires any kind of thought.
Really EVE has nothing to prove at this point in it's life. It's been running since 2003, and it's unique in that the population continually grows at a slow steady rate. Currently the sub numbers are quite impressive given the condition of the mmo market. CCP is not doing too bad to say the least.
The game has seen evolution and expansions up the ying yang and all for free. Also Ambulation is coming soon, which is a necessity for the development of CCP's next mmo World of Darkness (WOD). This will attract a whole new audience, as many cannot stand to be a ship all the time. On the horizon we're getting Planetary Interaction.
It's not about "if you get it or not".
This game certainly has one of the steepest learning curves of any mmo made to this point. Arguing this only displays how little time one has put into it.
If you don't like it, you don't like it.
EVE has nothing to prove to you.
"Mr. Rothstein, your people never will understand... the way it works out here. You're all just our guests. But you act like you're at home. Let me tell you something, partner. You ain't home. But that's where we're gonna send you if it harelips the governor." - Pat Webb
You might as well find a game that would suit you. There is no reason sticking into a game that you don't like then rant about it over the forums. If you don't like it. Leave. Mission Accomplished.
You have to look no farther than the title of this thread to understand why Eve players quickly turn to insults. It's one thing to say "I don't like this game because..." its another things to say "this game sucks because..."
But it's not just this thread, EvE players turn to insults in virtually every thread where anyone treats the game like it isn't the greatest thing since sliced bread. This is hardly a new occurence. Like it or not, there are a lot of EvE players who come off like cult members.
Always keep in mind most people who play don't post.
Rule of thumb.

Agree with all you said. As I love sci-fi, space in general, .... I tried at least 4 times with Eve .... but it is the most boring game (hmm, can be called game, right?) ever. I guess I'm permanently out.
Im just wondering how the OP is gonna pay for a multi BILLON isk ship and fittings if he doesnt play let alone pay for the skillbooks and implants which speed character progression .
there is something very refreshing about NOT being able to obtain maximum level in 2 days (insert names of several major MMO's that fit into this category here including EQ , EQ2 ,WoW ,CoH/V , Champions Online) .
That makes the game refreshing as there are NO short cuts . It also makes eve a game that rewards *specialising* (which also requires planning and half a brain)
A 2 month old with focused skills will happily take down a 5 year old who didnt have a plan , didnt play (and therefore couldnt afford any of the toys he has skills for) ,doesnt know jack s*it about ship fittings and modules and pissed off all his allies with his rants about how EvE sucks cos its not WoW in space
If you want an example of what makes eve PvP great.. check out the alliance tournament 7 on youtube especially the semifinals ,youll see why its such a great game when you see setups that have been "unbeatable" get ripped to shreds by a cleverly created counter . Youll also notice a huge variety of ships being effective
Bottom line is when you get bored of power leveling via a FoTM build and whatever current FoTM max Lvl in 2 days exploit your using... youll see the beauty of eves skill system .
Either way , its your $$ so do what you find the most fun for your money

Agreed and thank you.
Is EVE the only MMORPG you've ever played, that you have this shallow a viewpoint of the potential ways the skill system could be improved? Here are some methods with just 20 secs of thought put into them:
You're dumb to continually insist he wants an "advantage over the casuals". This is purely about wanting a connection between one's actions and one's advancement. Even in games that are totally not about progression your actions often translate into a score.
Even an EVE fanatic like yourself would probably concede that the solitary actions of a non-corp-aligned pilot are utterly meaningless -- more meaningless than actions in perhaps any other game. :P
"What is truly revealing is his implication that believing something to be true is the same as it being true. [continue]" -John Oliver
Eve....the longest living browser game ever. hail to the king baby.....
"This may hurt a little, but it's something you'll get used to. Relax....."
You have to look no farther than the title of this thread to understand why Eve players quickly turn to insults. It's one thing to say "I don't like this game because..." its another things to say "this game sucks because..."

There is only one thing I've seen here that sux's, and it has nothing to do with EVE
Your picture is wrong. Never had Chicago Deep Dish Pizza I guess :P
Hold on Snow Leopard, imma let you finish, but Windows had one of the best operating systems of all time.
If the Powerball lottery was like Lotro, nobody would win for 2 years, and then everyone in Nebraska would win on the same day.
And then Nebraska would get nerfed.-pinkwood lotro fourms

Okay, first off you obviously just fail at any kind of MMORPG that requires you do more than grind all day. EVE is very unique and when you actually attempt to progress in EVE you will. And what bothers me the most the way you insulted the advertisement if you actually mine while you train and have basic math skill you can make that much ISK and get that ship in that amount of time. Lazy, fat ass people like you really suck dick at doing anything that requires any kind of thought.
That's some goooooooood pizza!
"World of Warcraft is the perfect implementation of this genre." - Hilmar Petursson. CEO of CCP.
Amazing this thread is still alive and well.

You might as well find a game that would suit you. There is no reason sticking into a game that you don't like then rant about it over the forums. If you don't like it. Leave. Mission Accomplished.
But it's not just this thread, EvE players turn to insults in virtually every thread where anyone treats the game like it isn't the greatest thing since sliced bread. This is hardly a new occurence. Like it or not, there are a lot of EvE players who come off like cult members.

Agree with all you said. As I love sci-fi, space in general, .... I tried at least 4 times with Eve .... but it is the most boring game (hmm, can be called game, right?) ever. I guess I'm permanently out.
I post only about games I have played at least tried to play for short. Or sometimes I also post if theme is general.
Youll also notice a huge variety of ships being effective
as for eve PvP being slow....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7g_kQw_b0SQ
Bottom line is when you get bored of power leveling via a FoTM build and whatever current FoTM max Lvl in 2 days exploit your using... youll see the beauty of eves skill system .
Either way , its your $$ so do what you find the most fun for your money
