Why so much hate at a successful, highly polished and fun game?

LordDevilLordDevil Member UncommonPosts: 253

I really wonder why so many in the MMORPG community think they need to bash a game mostly based on wrong assumptions! I knew already this would happen... because yeah the game is from NCSoft, and its from Korea - and thus it will be viewed very sceptical.

Actually thats a good thing, because that reduced the amount of hype the game generated... and thats also why I think this game will grow even more over time, instead of the large initials drops we saw in many other overhyped MMOs.

We all know Korea will have a hard time successeding here... but its also the first time they made a totally polished, highly detailed new MMO with super smooth graphics... full of lovely details in every area (gestures, NPC idle animations, char creation, see steel rake instances, some of the areas backgrounds etc.....)... ! So many people were totally surprised on how well Aion runs. That leads us to one of the biggest problem in todays MMOs -> Bots

Yes the game has bots - which game doesnt have them? But its NCsoft, so we know from L2,  they will not ban them - even though Aion has nothing to do with L2.... Actually I dont know why people are telling lies about the game... but you dont need to buy Kinah for anything - this game is NOT l2 - we have bound items, we have quest rewards, we have abyss gear which you can only aquire via abyss points - there isnt more need for Kinah than you needed in WoW at the beginning....

Also if people would read the blogs of the devs, then you would see that they are working on GM 24/7 support and that they are already banning more and more bots . Surely they are still under staffed because of the underestimation of the games success. But I am very sure that it will getting better over time (at least be patient and give them time they need)... Most people like me rarely encounter bots anyway, because if you do instances, abyss, group quests in elite areas you will never encounter a bot.

The seconds thing I read is that some say its a grind in every place... which is so wrong again. Just because its not WoW where you get everything feeded into your mouth (bless god). In Aion crafting etc. actually means something. It needs dedication yes, but on the other side the items you can craft can be as valuable as the highest instance drops etc.  ! Oh and I for one never needed to grind 1 bit (I am 42 now) - there are so many group missions and quests especially in elite areas etc. - surely if you play solo and run out of quests you have to grind to get higher - well I dont mind that, the game is a MMO not a solo game. There is really enough to do to mostly avoid grinding. But yes if you want max level in a week and best gear in another week, then please go back where you came from, but dont bash the game for being a grinder,  just because there are so many things to work for.

So I really hope people's stop lying to potential customers who finally want to try another MMO, by telling them wrong informations. Give them a chance and let them try the game by themselves - nearly ALL of my friends didnt regret it and still love the game, so I really wonder why some people made it to their prime hobby to convince them not to play Aion? But I am pretty sure its just because they are afraid to see Aion succeeding... ridiculous...

Its strange to read a truthful rational post on these forums. You sir will get flamed by the haters soon, but just let me say i agree with every word you said.

GW2 the future of MMO gaming

I have one observation towards the OP.

Kinah is probably the most important resource for somebody that is on the levelling phase of the game. Skill books, gathering skills, crafting skills and wings are among the things that somebody will be spending a lot of kinah to advance. For those not careful enough, repurchasing their experience loss is also a considerable kinah drain. Transportation costs also add up, when people move around a lot.

It is a well written post but don't forget, Aion to you is fun and highly polished but to others it could appear differently. I don't play Aion (I don't like the anime look to the chars and combat) but it does look pretty decent. Unfortunately there appears to be situations in game, which you bring up, that are game breaking for some people.

The unsatisfied are always more vocal than the happy.

I would be wary of calling people liars, that will just annoy and bring out the flamers and your post could be lost in pointless name-calling and flaming. To some, the game is not polished (to their own expectations of course) and so they will say so, and as its opinion, they are not really lying, merely stating their opinion, different to yours.

    Enjoy your game

Just curious to know, has NCsoft released any sort of subscription numbers after the first free month yet ?

    Succesful yes.

    Highly polished yes.

Fun, yes for a few weeks, this is why so many sells, but after that, Aion felt very shallow to me. Guess this is where the hate comes from, if others felt something like that.

I agree here you need the basic Kinah for death, skill books and surely for crafting etc. ! It will also feel very expensive at the beginning, though it evens out later on... But well if Kinah would be useless the market would be dead too - and I dont think it would be good for a MMO to make money totally useless? I think its at a fine balance - people who buy Kinah will always buy them anyway - as we see they even buy Gold in WoW - even though some may wonder for what :)

Death penalty may appear costly at first, but luckily it helps reducing the amount of death people are facing... and I always hated games where death means nothing and dying was used for teleportation.... Also once you get to the higher level you will see that the death penalty is very low anyway...

I agree with the OP, and I'm not even playing the game (or planning on it).

However, why did you fall into the trap yourself and start bashing WoW? Seems counterproductive to the point you are trying to make...

Maybe because "fun" is relative. You could list features of any given game until you're blue in the face but none of that matters if you don't like it. Since these forums are specifically designed for people to express themselves in, you should not be surprised when someone says they hate X game and someone says they love Y game.

I personally think Jane Seymour is a Goddess but I have no doubt many people would disagree. Some people think Aion is the end all and be all of MMORPG's but I have no doubt many people would disagree. Can I stop beating this dead horse of an argument now?

Surely I  understand that the game may appear shallow to some. We had one in our legion too who didnt have any more solo quests left and was a bit stuck at the time... But once we took him with us on some rift and abyss fights - or once he started to really get into the crafting system... he got many new motivations and stopped talking that he thinks this game is just a new polished copy of something. We even have some old wow players in our legion one of them said once he got to abyss and did start to PvP he really felt a drastic change in the usual gameplay - he said thats definately something new. The limited strategic way with flying in abyss adds a completly new way of PvP.

Many will disagree with me here... and well its up to them - there is no game for everyone - nor will there ever be. But since I started to do a lot of PvP I have to say too that PvP in Aion is totally new than in all the others MMO I have played so far and can really make you addicted (it may look totally different though for peopel who cant get into pvp at all)... - at least we are having a blast :)

I know this is a thing that most people say and it's cherised by the fans of the game but how do you actually know that?

I never criticise anything I haven't tried before, and often I have been wrongly accused of not having tried what I'm criticising and honestly I think it's just because it's a good argument to "disarm" the other person but nothing else.

  • majimaji Member UncommonPosts: 2,091

I think that ignoring problems of the game or claiming they ain't as bad as they actually are is as worse as making up problems or claiming they are bad than it's the case. In both cases you give people a false impression.

I think one of the reasons why there is so much dislike to Aion is, that the game got incredbly high ratings while delivering nothing new, having quite some problems and a lot of "features" that are questionable (great for some, bad for others). When MMORPGs that actually try something new are rated down because of that, and MMORPGs which deliver the same stuff as ever get the highest ratings, then it is no wonder that some people start to feel some dislike towards the game.

Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)

Well I know what you mean, but if you ask most of the players who like Aion, they will tell you that Aion is indeed different, even though it may not feel apparent at first. A game is very fastly thrown into the general treadmill -> They play it for a short time, make up their mind and start to write bad opinions about the game. And I am pretty sure that Aion 1-25 doesnt feel quite differently than e.g. WoW felt in its beginning.

However here in Europe the critics are much better though... and I think if more reviewers would play MMOs a bit deeper they would even see that Aion definately has a very unique game play. The abyss battles may not be for everyone thats for sure. But for people who love to do solo and group pvp, I am pretty sure they can agree that Aion feels totally different and new in this regard... ! Many of our legion didnt have so much fun in pvp in a long time....

Surely its always a matter of taste, and I know that many total unique mmos like Darkfall, MO etc. got rated down by the reviewers... but thats proably simply because if the game feels so unfinished and has major flaws, its hard to rate them better.

    to the OP...

perhaps ppl went to the aionsource forums and realized the community's shit, so bad infact that it makes this community look like the Brady Bunch in comparison.

Grouping in Old school mmo's: meeting someone at the bar and chatting, getting to know them before jumping into bed.  Current mmo's grouping: tinder.  swipe, hookup, hope you don't get herpes, never see them again.

Although the caliber of AionSource's community isn't necessarily indicative of that of the game's, from my intial month worth's experience with the game, it certainly felt like only a slight step-up from WoW's.

The game is extremely polished though!

  • DeivosDeivos Member EpicPosts: 3,692

Honestly, for me, it just got boring. I have a problem with most any game that doesn't keep up either on pacing or strategy side. Very much so have yet to see a game that actually manages to balance both well. The latter half of Aion was interesting, but very far from what I'd call a challenge or fun for the long term.

In other words, I'm sure it's a good game, just ain't for me.

Aion is not fun, if you call repetive grinding fun then I guess it is fun. the game got old to me around level 26 or so. I just lost interest and stoped logging in till my acct cancelled, then I uninstalled and probally won't ever go back to aion.

  • EthianEthian Member Posts: 1,216

In AION people complain theres not much group stuff in the early levels and then they turn around and complain thats theres too much near end-game. Others can't stand the "grind" and then complain thats WoWs too easy...I mean seriously folks? LOL

Its very hard to please MMO gamers these days. Their expectations are way too high (probly from boredom of MMOs in general) so they play MMOs looking for problems and then bitch and whine trying ruin it for others because the MMO isnt good enough for them. This genre truly has turned out pretty bad. Everyone wants the "perfect" MMO resembling games like Oblivion or Dragon Age but they don't realize its not going to happen in our time.... Live and learn I guess lol

I laugh at most of the posts from haters because honestly, all their complaints are BS. The fact is that many many gamers are enjoying AION and it truly bugs the hell out of them....   :-)

Personally, AION is the most fun I've had since DAoC. Chew on that trolls!! muahahah

I see and actually its sad that Aion PvE looks very easy and not really challenging at the beginning. Once though you step up to the 40+ and especially the elite areas there, it gets really hard and challenging (just remember the 41+ orange weapon quest weee). I wouldnt want to do them with a random group. Also the 40+ instances have some really fun and strategic bosses. I wonder why they didnt put in some more strategic instances/bosses into the lower levels.

But since the game is also centered around pvp I guess the challenge will be very different for everyone anyway :) - e.g. I really like the pvp in Aion - I had some fights which went longer than 10+ mins (that feels like forever in pvp) and also many short fights, totally dependant on the player skills. So what I like is that you really see if someone knows how to play his class or not... the non skillfull players are always free points anyway :)

It is all subjective. What you enjoy others may not.  When you get upset about people saying things about the game you like, well, that goes both ways when people blindly defend a game or a band or whatever. Fans of games and detractors of games are the doing the same thing. I tend to side more with a games detractors though, you now, because rose-colored glasses are kind of a joke.

I love Aion and don't think anyone could disagree that it's a highly polished and entertaining game though they will try over and over again.  That being said, it is centered around PvP and due to the steep incline in exp requirements post 30+ there really needs to be more there in terms of content to keep it entertaining for those players.

Another issue that I have with the game is that once you leave the starter areas, at least for the Asmodian side, the appeal of the terrain around you takes a severe dive as it's nothing but rock pretty much everywhere you look.  Gone is the lush vegetation and pools of water and mystical forests that you originally saw and don't get me wrong I understand that the Asmodian is the darker side but darker does not mean your imagination and attention for detail suddenly takes a nose dive.

My hope is that at the very least they keep to their plan of adding more content for the 30+ levels so that it doesn't become such a noticable grind.  Yes we should all expect to do some grinding I get that and totally fine with that as I'm not looking for EZ mode but there's a grind to get you over the "wall" levels and then there is a GRIND which is the "can't see light at the end of the tunnel" grind that's like trying to fill a lake with a dripping faucet.

I think everyone knows that I really enjoy Aion and defend it for the game that it is but that being said if it is to remain a competitive game NCSoft is going to have to step it up.
