I've played several pvp based mmo's since I started playing in the UO era, and I haven't found a game that keeps me as entertained and challenged since Darkfall came out.
Since we are sharing videos, youtube is full also of Age of Conan videos, but here is one that I made myself. The objective was not to show gameplay, I was just messing around with a ingame joke (my rock).
My point is look at the difference in speed of fighting and animation, you just can't compare, it's 2 different worlds.
edit : P.S. i forgot to mention the video settings. DX9 with I believe "pvp settings" (which are considerably less detailed, it is required for good FPS)
Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing.
yes, it IS a matter of personal choice, but speaking of choice, most games do allow a choice between different point of views, you can "zoom in" until you are in first person, or you can "stay out in 3rd person".
why "force" people into first person?
I totatlly respect the fact that some may find it more immersive, but I don't understand, why force me to play like that? I rather not play at all.

well, when it comes to shooter type games, there are some hard and fast rules i guess. 3rd person vs fps, the guy playing fps usually gets to say pwnd! 3rd person probably works okay in games like gow, but its really too limiting for most shooters, and the restricted field of view would definitely be a major hindrance to the player - planetside had a 3rd person perspective too, as far as i know it was never used except for stealth

PVP games like Darkfall and Mortal Online went with first person because of PVP mechanics. People cannot just zoom camera and spot people trying to sneak up on them from behind, that basically wastes skill where stealth is not a character just becoming invisible, but where the sounds you make and hiding in shrubbery make you stealthy.
The issue with looking around corners and spying without any risk
Also issues like aiming spells and skills, technically you cant do that with accuracy in 3rd unless the game itself kind of centers you on a target.
And much more.
It seems pretty obvious the best answer for a PVP mmo is first person, or first person for archery/magic and very tight 3rd person like Darkfall

Sorry, but it is not so obvious. I guess we could take it to a new thread, but to aswer quickly :
3rd person does not mean you can see everything and everyone at 360° on the contrary. I have often sneaked up people and people have often sneaked up on me...
U CAN spy around corners without actualliy putting your own body past the corner in 3rd person, that's true and it's a good point which I did not think of. However, I don't spend most of the time spying round corners, I may even go so far as to point out that it hardly ever occurs...
Aiming spells and skills :
For ranged, yes, it helps to be in FP. YES this IS obvious, otherwise, all the shooter games would not be in first person. This is if you need to manually aim to hit your target. (I still prefer to play Grand Theft Auto in 3rd person btw).
However, I always prefer to play melee classes and it is absolutely not required even without having the game centering you on your target.
One more time, it does not seem so obvious to me at all.

Well that's fine, however the PVP gamers play or have played those games, including all the old school pvp guilds that you would never find in PVE games. That reasures me that PVPers like myself know what we are talking about....especially making "obvious" statements.
Hope you have fun in any 3rd person game you play tho, good luck
The OP asked about the most PvP focused MMO. Many of you went on to list games that require PvE to get to PvP.
I listed a mmo that is 100% PvP.

"Hello person posting on a site specifically for MMO's in a thread on a sub forum specifically for a particular game talking about meta features and making comparisons to other titles in the genre, and their meta features.
DAOC is about the best PVP game I ever played and I have been playing them a long time. The 3 factions make it setup where stalemates don't really happen cause ya can get nailed when ya least expect it. There are huge battles with hundreds of players going at it. You destroy keeps and buildings and you can bring assemble and use your own siege equipment. You can use siege equipment that others have left too...I found it a really top notch pvp experience. Whenever I get tired of the current crops of games I go back there again.

Perhaps you need to retitle the thread then. You are not looking for the most focused PVP MMO.
You are looking for the most focused MMORPG set in a fantasy world with PvE that grants access to PvP that is stat and gear based.

The only actual "pvp focused MMO" out there is Planetside. That's all it is you fight other players, that's how you progress. The most pvp focused MMORPG with pve alternatives would most likely have to go to EVE, and Darkfall followed by DAOC/Warhammer. In all honesty just about every game named in this thread can be a pvp focused MMO, some of them give you the option to only focus on pvp if you choose to.
You really aren't going to find a straight up pvp game that you haven't ever heard of. There isn't some magical, all glory pvp game hiding in the shadows that noone knows about.
Guild Wars is designed with group PVP in mind (8vs8). Small maps though. Its the only MMO I know that has competition worthy PVP. You dont even have to PVE if you dont want to.
Most of the other MMO's are designed for PVE and have PVP as afterthought. You only have to look at the skillset for that. Silly taunt skills ftl! I mean the idea behind that skill is silly to begin with even for PVE.

Exactly. My next step down from Plantside would be Darkfall, if you can put up with its issues.

Perhaps i should specify that i dont like first person point of view in the thread title, or perhaps you could actually read the original post and perhaps other people might have an interest in first person games even though i dont.
Btw, the title speaks of Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game with a focus on Player vs Player combat. I find it appropriate.

Planetside is also 3ed person. It also fits to a "T" your description.
You just did not describe what you were looking for correctly.
I assume you think the "RPG" means midevil fantasy in MMORPG.

For now, I stick with AoC.
I guess next thread will be "a good pvp focused anticipated mmorpg?"

Aion is not a "pvp focused mmo" it's a pvpve game. It mixes pve and pvp together. Even the developers tell you this.
That is not what they mean by PvPvE. What they mean is that it is a two-way pvp system - you'll often be fighting npcs and pcs at the same time. See aiononline.org/pvpve/ for a better explanation. The main point is this, though:
"Depending on the situation, players may end up battling the Balaur as well as other players, or there may be times when the Balaur can ally with one faction and fight the other. Other lethal denizens of the Abyss may also come into play. This is the heart of Aion’s PvPvE system."

Respecting your choice as it's a matter of personal taste.
As for me First person view is so much more immersive.
thats why for me Darfall is the best mmo since UO / Daoc for PvP and EQ for immersion.

Plantside has first and third, as well as other modes enabled by gear. Also, the "robots" are optional vechals, you dont have to use it.
Again, Planetside is 100% PvP MMO, with no PvE grind to participate in PvP, also feature a horozontial progression RPG lite like experoiance system.
Its really the only true PvP MMO, all others are "Do the stats on my gear, beat yours" games.
Still one of the only true PvP MMO's.
