Anyone else worried that.....

Even though Star Trek is a cool IP,  I am worried that an mmo that has been in development for only 2 years or so can not possibly have enough content or polish to keep people interested in the long term.  Other companies usually take what 3-5 years to make an mmo with enough content?

Just curious what other people thought about this.  I wil def. try the game, just worried that it will only have like a month worth of real content.

Yes, I think its safe to say that MANY people are worried about this.

Defintely a concern, although some of the games that took years to make haven't turned out that great so who knows, if they do it right, could surprise us.

parrotpholk-Because we all know the miracle patch fairy shows up the night before release and sprinkles magic dust on the server to make it allllll better.

Two years is a very short time span for  a games development, the games that take up to 5 years to create in some cases longer, usually are due to building engines or overhauling one. In this case they used a pre-existing engine, which significantly cuts down development time. Though it would have been for the best had they took the time to overhaul their engine to better cover the property they were using.

This thought would peak out of my mind every once in a while but honestly alot of the games that take five to ten years to release release as crap anyway which leads me to believe what I see and that's that those companies didn't know what they were doing.  Cryptic though is developing the game on there own engine and they could in all honesty just be very adept at using it by now which I think is the case.  Now after having said that I don't expect the game to release content heavy or anything but I doubt it will be too bad.

I've heard quite a few complaints about a lack of content in CO and would hope by that time they would learn a lesson.

but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

It wasnt a concern for me, They said there was plenty to do. but now after seeing how deceitful the company can be it makes you wonder for sure.

one thing to keep in mind is that most games spend over 50% of their development time & resources on engine and server tech needs. However CO paid for most of that and also handled most of the testing for that as well. so hopefully the last 2 years have been mostly spent on content development. However as every single mmo that has ever hit the market STO will also be low on content. They all are always too slim on content no matter how much time & development is spent on it.

I think for the explorers in us will have a blast with the Genesis system.

That's what I was thing, CO was there testing as far as a game engine goes, as for content? ST has the lore to back it up, im sure they got it all worked out, and Yes the Genesis system is going to rock.

They said the game is gonna come out closer than you think and what make a MMO to take 5 years is them also making an MMO game engine that cryptic already have that works.

So there is nothing to worry about.

As someone mentioned earlier the game engine was already made, so I will expect at least a half decent product.

    Make it so...

Hopefully STO can incorporate some more sandbox elements (like the Genesis feature that automatically generates new star systems and planets to explore and presumably do missions at).

Not really, Darkfall took forever to make and from what a lot of players say it turned out to be crap. Time is no indication of quality. As technology and software  gets faster development time will naturally get quicker. You can't expect a game that comes out in 2010 to take the same amount of time to develop as one from 2000.

All I can really say is...  Why god?  Why Cryptic?

Why couldn't Turbine get the Star Trek IP?

Then we'd all have no worries at all!  :)

I feel that given what we know about the "episodic content" they've made, mainly, the number of episodes--it's likely there will be a lack of content in my opinion.  Clearly the "genesis system" they keep pimping will be used to round out the content they have but I find it unlikely that the system will be robust enough to provide content that doesn't get repetitive.  I'm beginning to think that many developers who started working on their games a couple years back decided that to get the level of polish people expect from MMOs now that they needed to drastically scale back their designs so they could launch within their budget.  The problem there is that now we're seeing shells of MMOs--nice and shiney shells--but shells non-the-less.

Turbine would of made a mmo with a star trek skin on it and would kill the star trek mmo, just like what PE was doing when they where making it.

You do know they gonna have more then just episodic content and what the genesis system does in the game.

Yes.  I sincerely hope that there's tons of content to keep replayability high...but I doubt there will be.

Your statement made no sense isn't the point of making a star trek mmo to make an mmo with a star trek skin on it?  And I'd say that with all the happy customers Turbine has now (me included) they could certainly do better than most of the other companies who could have gotten the ip.

Frankly then, you are part of the problem.

You and others like you reward half-assed projects like this. Cryptic will make money on a weak design that does no justice to the rich IP they have licensed.

Don't blame the devs. Blame yourself.

It means, they are gonna take the normal stuff from MMO's like what you can see from all the other mmo's have in common and make it works for star trek... Not looking at what star trek is and how it could be made into a MMO.

Indeed, they did say that.  That is end game content though.  I'd like there to be enough content that, at least for the first quarter of character progression, you could level half a dozen characters and not see repeated stuff.  Seeing as many games have dozens of quests in a starting zone and a half dozen or more starting zones it's not asking for too much I don't think.  Particularly because with Star Trek Online the quests would only have to be sprinkled in 2 starting areas as opposed to, say, WoW's 8.

I really dont understand how many posters can honestly believe that Cryptic is going to release this game with lots of content and a working Genesis system. Look at CoH and CO within their first year. Lots of promises for release and features end up being added in over time that were supposed to be in at launch. Im sorry, but this company has burned many others and I twice already. I sincerely hope I am wrong here for all the fans, but Cryptic has a pattern or deceit and failure to deliver.

    Cheers!
