Im sorry, but this company has burned many others and I twice already. I sincerely hope I am wrong here for all the fans, but Cryptic has a pattern or deceit and failure to deliver.
    Cheers!

Agreed.  That's why I highly doubt there will be a good amount of content.

Suggesting that is is common sense also suggests that the majority of people would also see it the same way and agree with you. I doubt that is the case.

I honestly think it should take LONGER to develop a game now than before. As graphics are better now and standards are higher, designers have to put in more work to develop the advanced graphics people have come to expect. Plus, thorw in the fact that Cryptic is trying to make their game compatible with multiple systems (even though they can't apparently come to an agreement with Microsoft to release their games on the Xbox) and that adds more work their team has to do and confines the options they have to do it with, since they have to keep their game small enough to fit into the limited hardware of a console. Then you have the downturn in the economy, which probably leaves them with less money and fewer resources to work with... I honestly can't see how this is any eaiser than developing a game in 2000. It seems a lot more complicated in fact.

If there is a reason that games can be developed faster now than they were back in 2000, its probably because game designers these days are targeting casual players who don't know any better and thus the designers can get away with a lower quality product with less content. Cutting corners that way probably does save a lot of time... but it won't result in a very good game.

Anymore, any new game concerns me, as I haven't yet found one to take me away from WoW..  I hope STO, focuses primarily on PvE play with a huge portion of content to keep me busy for years..  I truely hope this isn't another Eve or Aion that only has limited PvE grind to level you for PvP end game..  If so, I'll leave STO just as fast as I left Eve and Aion (1 month)..

Good Luck Cryptic.. don't let me down

Just curious what other people thought about this.  I wil def. try the game, just worried that it will only have like a month worth of real content.

Not really. If the content runs out, stop playing the game. There are so many games that I really don't need any to be "long term".

YES! Look at EVERYTHING they have touched. It has NOT, and is not doing good. They rushed out Champioins online and look at it. They are doing the same thing .. launching it way to early and it will LOOK great at launch but wait about 2 months.  For ME its no diff if FUNCOM came out with another one.. I would not touch it for months.

Its SO sad that the name STARTREK went with them. After this I dont see another STARTREK every coming out.

Well thats atleast one scenario we don't need to worry about.

Cryptic is a PvE game developer. Both of their previous games were heavily focused on PvE content and had no signifiant PvP to speak of at launch (City of Heroes later added more PvP, but that was WAY down the line and it was never taken as seriously as the PvE). STO is their first game to even suggest that it might have some half-way serious PvP content, and even then its looking like the PvP is mostly for the Klingons, Starfleet players can probably ignore it if they want.

OK, so then using your "common sense" you believe that triple A titles released in 2020 will only have been in development a year?

    My concerns almost-exactly.

I don't like how the ships move. I don't like the silly light trails. The combat looks boring and un-star-trek-movie-like.

It's almost as if they're basically trying to cash-in on the star trek name.

The fact that i'm currently playing Champions Online and not very impressed with it, makes me lose confidence in Cryptic's ability to make a decent online star trek title.

Why are there so many cutesie, fantasy, childish MMO's. Give me blood, gore and a long lasting challenge. I don't need my hand being held along the way. Thanks.

Ya know I hate titles like this. Anyone worried about WHAT? That the haircuts are bad? That the system specs are high? Shoot, I could read the ENTIRE FORUM to find interesting topics like that! Sorry, but make some topic titles who give *some* hint to what the topic is about.

I'll have to agree. Perhaps they found a novel new approach to develop and release an MMORPG in a shortened development cycle.  But probably not.

Most likely they've gone with a more Agile development model which delivers software functionality in smaller, easier to deliver modules which will be added to on a regular basis.

Of course, this means content will be somewhat lacking in the first year or so and it remains to be seen if users will stay with the product and wait for the new  content.

All depends how well they can stick to a regular schedule and how much content each module has.

It won't be.  All this game is about is leveling up to get bigger and better ships.  Oh, there may be skill expertise, and expertise with your 'pet' officers, but the basic scope of the game is...

Everyone gets a ship.  No real earning it.  You level up in rank, earn the right to use better ships, upgrade your weapons, then everyone keeps trying to be the 'badass' on the block.  Once all the players reach the end game content, there will be nothing but Sovereign class ships all over the place, and nothing to do.

I don't know about the ground game, but the space game focuses on leveling up in rank, shooting crap with your ship, and war.

I've seen nothing about team cooperation, multiple people on one single ship making it work, exploring quadrants, or anything along those lines.  Just effing war.  Now, maybe Cryptic has other plans, maybe they don't as far as content goes, but I have seen nothing to make me believe otherwise yet in all the preview videos on the website.

Star Trek is very dear to me and I would love a sucessful MMO based on it but honestly I've seen nothing so far that tells me Cryptic are going to deliver. I own all the series, loved most the movies and I'm desperate for some new trek so it's a testimony to my concerns that I wont be buying this at release like I have many titles before.

I think it is sensible to be cautious about this title after the reports about CO. It's hard to go by the word of any mmo devs and if they've already either misread or mislead consumers on one title in regards to content why should we continue to take them at their word?

I've bought a lot of crap MMOs at release and been burned too many times. This time around I wont be rewarding the devs of a game with my trust (or my cash) before they've earned it.

    Same here.

That's why I'm applying for the free beta of STO.

If they don't select me, then tough sh*t.   I won't even buy it...unless I get TO try it first.  So they'll have to wait until after they offer a trial version before I'll even think of giving them my business.
