Lol, I can't help but notice that in almost every single article I read about soe, anywhere on the net, where it is possible to post comments, lolol, the pitchforks and torches do indeed come out. Well, at the very least soe has made all of us into a sort of community.
Hey, trying to look for a silver lining here after all they've done in the past. :P
SWG all through the debacle. EQ2 from open beta. PS since beta and still subbed. VG not from release (which for those with short memories, they didn't release as devs, they took the game over when it flopped if they hadn't there would be no VG). PotBS (again not theirs). Matrix (RIP and again no theirs).
Now with the exception of their fkin disgraceful actions regarding SWG I have enjoyed all of those games for a decent amounts of time. PS for me is the best mmo of them all, do I think they have made the greatest decisions with it, NO, blatantly. But that does not change the fact that there have been few other games I have enjoyed for as long as those from SOE. In many ways it pains me to say but I'm just some [person] wanting to play a game and I will not cut off my nose to spite my face.
I'm looking forward to seeing the new games they have planned and I [am excited] about the mere notion of a new PS.

In many ways it pains me to say but I'm just some twat wanting to play a game and I will not cut off my nose to spite my face. I'm looking forward to seeing the new games they have planned and I jerking off regularly to the mere notion of a new PS. Flame away you self rightous morons. Edit: Oh and to the "were you there when... were you there when...", you sound like a fkin ww1 vet, get some perspective, its a fkin game. I get it you aint going to buy another SOE game, do you and the rest really feel the need t point it outevery single time someone posts SOE on a forum, is there some search engine you guys got that alerts you all? Like an internet bat phone or something?
Same here mrWolf, SOE atleast has given me a MMORPG experiance, can't say much about other company's, SWG in CB/OB till some weeks into the NGE, really disliked what they did back then with the NGE, but even been back in 2007 for about 8 months and had allot of fun. Like I said SOE has given me a MMORPG experiance I wanted and above that they have made me stay the longest with their game.
Not been with EQ, did try it a few times, but overall to much fantasy for my taste.
Been with Vanguard and had to laugh at a comment I saw where someone mentioned he needed a system that could make it into space, I mean I alread y read those type of comments when the game was released but to see it still today is really amusing, which is so funny as I didn't have a super system at the time and was doing well, did have some issue's but none of them where gamebreaking, oh and I know certain classes or starter area's where worse, but unfortunaly some people base their opinion pure on those bad sections of the game, obvious it's bad the game had that many bad sections, but overall the performance was not as bad as some try to make it look. But again been with Vanguard in CB/OB but didn't last long as again it was to much fantasy for my taste. People these day's seem unable to look at the good parts of a game cause it's more popualr to say a game sucks then to admit you are enjoying a game, atleast that's the general fibe I get mostly from this website.
Kinda my story of my gaming life is that I always leave a game because it does not suite me or my playstyle, I have yet to encounter a game regalrdess what company that was unplayeble, but if I had to beleive every bash at ever game I should not be able to play any game.
I really think that some people treath games not really as games but more like something they need in life and if a game gets messed up it seems their lives get messed up.
Do I like the deccissions SOE or Smed have made?, well of course many things I dislike from them, but without any really hard data streaming from their servers it's hard to say why sometimes they do things that I or anyone else might see as a foolish thing to do.
I mean we have our own experiance wich is always very limited to really know or understand what is going on, obvious we can speak our mind, but sometimes we need to look at reality and know that some things we can simply not explain cause we do not get the proper info other then some own PLAYING experiance or what we read on forums.
So to be clear I don't like many things SOE has done, but they still there so they must be doing something good, shame people can not accept that, maybe they to blinded with hate, but then again they might persieve what I said as some SOE fanboy, which again shows ignorance.
But hey I always thought that this genre would have hte most open minded people among gamers, but after all these years that aint true at all seeing how people seem willing to react at something like SOE or Smed.
But then again it's popualr to bash SOE so that must be the main reason here for some.
... I really think that some people treath games not really as games but more like something they need in life and if a game gets messed up it seems their lives get messed up. ...
That is an interesting observation - and you are not the first to make it.
To dismiss these players as mawkish, to tell them to get a life, misses the NGE's lessons. These paying subscribers thought they had a life, and a community. Among a certain demographic, the distinction between meatspace and online - between "life" and "game" - grows increasingly arbitrary, like cash vs. credit cards. Having invested time building that part of their life, these players watched SOE, with brief warning and dubious justification, sweep it away.
Now while I don't feel that way myself (well, I am not that extreme anyway ;-D), it is part of an interesting insight into the mind of (some) MMO gamers.
Perhaps it's even what separates the MMO gamer from the Single Player Gamer?
And it's something that many Companies that make and publish MMOs don't seem to 'get'.
Perhaps that's why they can't make successful MMOs?

Funny thing when it comes to playing MMORPG, I consider myself hardcore, well obvious not in the sense these day's people asume that those who play 24/7 are hardcore, to me hardcore means dedication, put some effort into your game, this can be done being ingame for 30 minutes, this can be done being ingame for 2 hours, time isn't a masure if someone is hardcore or not, though currently it seems that many do think that the more someone is ingame the more hardcore he or she is. Might be true for some, not so much for me.
The quote about "getting a life" is just stupid and I truly hope you didn't get that out of what I said, if you did all I can say that what I said had nothing to do with getting a life.
Trust me also when I say that I have put allot of hours into SWG, starting with CB/OB till a few weeks into the NGE, and like I already said I really disliked the NGE, but then again I already started to dislike the game with the CU as I lost so many people even before hte CU was implimented. Mastered allot of profession, think BH was the only prof. I never mastered, overall my best experiance was that of a Doc and after that mainly crafter, I felt Jedi was intrested when I first entered CB, but after getting to know the gameworld Jedi was the least intresting thing I wanted out of my experiance.
I will say that a MMORPG goes deeper then your commen single player game due to it's community online, but they still remain games.
I must also admit I am a gamer, but with a passion for MMORPG's, that is the reason why I welcome company's to keep developing games, thankfully I have the a choice, no body has ever has forced or will force me to play a game that I do not like, nobody will force me to enjoy a game made by a gamecompany I might dislike, tbh there arn't any gamecompany's I dislike, there are only games I might dislike no matter what company or person is behind it.
and that's what it's all about me wanting to see more games regardless things of the past, I simply will be more carefull before thinking about getting dedicated to a game.
I also have to admit that thanks to SOE I started to look more into a game then all the thingsw around that game, with SWG I was very involved on the forums, wanted to know each and everything, which in the end never made my game experiance any better, it actualy made my gaming experiance worst due to the expectations we build around knowing every little detail.
I think the point that I was trying to make, isn't that soe spoiled my game or that I'm some sad gamer who's desperately addicted to mmorpgs and will fight tooth and nail to have a game my way. It's that they treated me (and quite a few others), as a paying customer, as completely irrelevant. And then they attempt to spin some story in the markets whenever they get the chance.
Don't get me wrong, it's not the game(s), it's the company, or rather the management of the company and their attitude, behind the games that ticks me off. I jumped when I saw that DCUO was being made, clicked on the page for previews here, saw soe's name on the list, and went "Oh crap ! Do I really want to go through the cow poop that soe will (inevitably) start spewing my way again ?", and then closed the page without even looking at anything else.
Who knows, the next thing soe puts out may become even bigger than wow and be the new king for the next 20 years but that doesn't mean that I will be happily handing over my money to someone who Will treat me like crap. Sorry, but I'm not really a masochist.
And as for the system requirements, yes I was exaggerating, but :
"Lastly, there's the very real issue of Vanguard's system specs, even for the core and hard core gamer in North America and Europe. For a variety of reasons and mistakes on our part that I won't get into right now, Vanguard was released with system spec requirements that were too high for January 2007. Continued optimization will help to a degree, but the game's big hope here is simply Moore's Law and that by the second half of 2007, and certainly by the end of the year, the system spec issue will have been greatly diminished. The big problem that remains is that you still pretty much need a new system as opposed to, say, simply a new graphics card."
"I think the point that I was trying to make, isn't that soe spoiled my game or that I'm some sad gamer who's desperately addicted to mmorpgs and will fight tooth and nail to have a game my way. /QFE My thoughts exactly.
Also, in response to the suggestion that people are blinded by hate re. SOE: Has SOE done anything right? Well of course they have. They did bring some form of creature handling back to the game in response to player input, and they did give entertainers a role to play in the game again. Is this good? To me, it is. They also restored at least some form of auto-attack for those that weren't FPS fans. Can people see this? Sure.
At the same time, does this earn the trust they broke via things like the way they handled broken quests in the original game (working as intended), the way they shafted numerous professions and gave us an unwanted level system with the CU, the way they never mentioned the NGE in the stratics chats about the future of the game, the way they rendered core systems of a live game completely unplayable with an unwanted revamp, the way they removed most of the games professions, the way they stripped a brand new expansion of its features, the way they introduced an RMT loot gamble into a subscription based game, etc. etc. etc.?
Well, lol, no. It doesn't even come close. Am I blinded by hate? I don't think so. I don't feel hate or even anger at this point. At the same time, when I read yet another interview where Smed spreads it thick to try to promote his company, I'm not going to hesitate to call a spade a spade.
When he said he'd never ruin a game just for cash, that's a load of horse manure, and I think everyone knows it. When he boasted about how well Free Realms is doing right at the time they have decided they need to change their business model to subscriptions beyond level 5, he's really pushing the bounds of credibility for me, again.
So, when I reflect on how Smed has handled SWG, Matrix, EQ, and when I read his latest interview, I'm not very excited about yet another MMO from SOE. Also, regarding Vanguard, people seem to forget that SOE did take an active role in development, and that SOE did set the release date for the game knowing it was in a disastrous state. Then when it tanked, they took over completely. Some see SOE as saving this game by taking over. If they really wanted the game to do well, they should not have insisted that it released in such a horrendous state in the first place. They did though, and of course the players were disappointed. Par for the course, which I think is my main point.
