The dumbest was in eq1 in the beginning when /consent meant you gave permission for someone to loot your corpse. The idea being that he would loot your stuff and bring it to you. Unfortunately too many trusted strangers and it was a CS nightmare.
Sitting down and waiting for your mana regen. I mean who the F*** is enjoying sitting down and doing nothing? If I wanted to relax, I'd join a granny's knitting circle!
You're an SWG dev who didn't get why camping was fun, aren't you?
I dunno. I was visualizing an old EQ caster who was tired of sitting staring at a book while combat was going on.
As for the topic. Repetition. Almost every MMO devolves into an endless cycle of repetition, at least those that don't begin as such (lvl 1 kill 10 rats, lvl 50 kill 10 x etc). You play through to end game and in almost every game you have three choices: PvP, raiding, farming to make money to PvP/Raid. Which leads into the entire problem with theme park/static world games.
Well that plus CC. Can't stand CC. Hated it back in EQ (okay chanter mez everything. Now let's have our entire raid attack this one guy then move on to the next), hate it today.
Let's see... 40 people raid, you get to the big boss... and 5 items drop. 35 people put in time and effort and lose for no reason other than it's a hold over from single player RPG mechanics.
I actually like voice chat and in some games you pretty much have to have voice chat or else its a lot harder to play the game. Like Fallen Earth, since its not auto attack you have to quit all combat and just let mobs hit you while your typing. When using vent I can continue to fight and or run while I only have to press Z and say help. If I did this without voice chat most likely Id be dead by the time I typed help and they got over to me. Just mute who you think is annoying, its as simple as that.
Now as for raiding, I like to do raids but for the fun of taking a boss down not for gear. Raiding IMO should never give you gear, money and XP is what it should only give you. WoW totally pissed me off because of they way they handled raiding. I don't want to run the same damn thing over and over again just to get some phat loot. Sorry but that is borrrrrrrriiiiinnnnnnggggg
I guess my problem is I'm not fond of the combat system of most modern day MMORPGs. Most modern MMOs have combat systems which require so much "finger work" for lack of a better term, that it really is hard to communicate via chat, and more and more players are having to rely on either hotbuttons or voice chat. Most choose voice chat.
I'm not saying I wish every modern MMO played like old school EQ because believe me I don't, but at least that game had a combat system that, while deep and involving, allowed the player room to socialize and give instruction via text during fights. You didn't feel like you had to have your hands glued to the keyboard, yet a certain amount of skill was involved just the same. Seems like MMORPGs these days just give you 500 buttons to mash to keep you busy.
In your case, I really don't consider Fallen Earth to be an MMORPG in the traditional sense, so that's alright, but my post was more geared to games like WoW, LoTRO, AION, and EQ2 instead of games like Planetside and Fallen Earth.
Must agree here this is one of the most gay and annoying mechanics possible right up alongside any combat system that requires alot of button mashing (AoC being the worst button masher I've played to date).
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience"

I hate WoW's stealth, which is ridiculously OP, but Warhammer did it okay.

Yes. Horrible gameplay, there. A pure grind mechanic, there.

Originally posted by loirnoir I could see something like this being applied with trees and whatnot. If MMOs had enough flora, a simple, crude, cloth trick would work. Maybe instead of making you invisible, it would just remove your name from the top of your character.
Speaking of which - names and health bars above an enemy in PvP is horrible.

The only reason that WAR's public quest system fell flat on its face was because of XP gain in Scenarios. That took the majority of the player population out of the game world since everyone leveled in the scenario.
Pretty much. I think the PQs are one of the best parts of Warhammer.

MMO forums where thousands of people who do not play MMO's can dictate how to dumb down MMO's and ruin the experience of people who actually play these games.
People who post in threads only to say people shouldn't be posting in them.

Faction NPCs- not in every MMO, but I love when there are two divisions of humans and you are playing an evil human and you head to the good city and they automatically know you are evil.
Forced Grouping- alla FFXI
Jump - To me if you jump around like an idiot in PvP you should have 0% accuracy... show me one real life combat where jumping in circles helps you. Even in monkey-fu you stop moving to attack. Plus I just don't see jumping around like an idiot in plate mail. This is why I like games with endurance, so jumping around makes you slow.
The "Enemies are incredibly stupid" mechanic that allows for tanks and damage dealer. An intelligent AI would never attack the tank, they would go straight for the guy that's hurting him the most.
True, and dumb mobs would never go for the healer, as he's not hurting them at all. That's the way it should be. Collision detection and terrain blocking, like NeverWinter NIghts had.

Rare equipment that is a lot better than you can get off of every day monsters.
I'm a UO gamer at heart and I have never been able to get into the whole "uber" loot..... thing. I quit every MMO I play shortly after getting to max level because all that's left to do in most of them is "get loot"; and the games that have PvP require you to get the gear before you can PvP.
It's a horrible cycle.
Not interested.

Easy call for me.......marriage/dating. Reserve this kind of crap for eHarmony.com. You wanna date and get married? How about turn off your computer and go out and meet some REAL people.
The one character per server per account restriction that SWG had, was the biggest direct cause of me quitting the game (months before the CU or NGE). In a game that was about the freedom to explore different characters and profession trees, it pretty much eliminated any freedom I had to create another unique character.
The profession grind to unlock the jedi character was also quite idiotic though I never cared enought about it to bother.

It helped stimulate the game's economy by actually making people specialize.
The hologrinding was a poor mechanic though, I do agree. Though, the entire alpha class mechanic in an MMO is just plain wrong anyways. As a follow up to above, I do think it was rather hypocritical that you got a second character slot if you unlocked Jedi.

Stun-locking.
In the early EQ days, you have to watch your spellbook, which fills your screen, when meditating for mana recovery.
I have not read the pages above, if someone already mentioned this, :-) sorry
Soulbinding.
I really loathe this mechanic in all of its many forms.
The death penalty. Easily the dumbest mechanic in an MMO. Frankly the harsher it is... the more likely I am to cancel.
EQ, once games without one were released... cancelled.
Aion, cancelled.
VG, cancelled.
repeatable quests!
in my opinion the cheapest way to generate "content" ....

Grey vendor trash. Without a doubt. Every time I get some, I can hear the devs laughing at me.

Mechanics that basically remove the RPG part from MMORPGs, making them into MMO TF2 and CS:S games.

This.
That says it all.
That hit the nail, definitely the one singular thing that I have always hated about MMOs - the feeling of freedom without actual freedom.
One of things to love about WAR, no need for stupid PVE progression.
