You forgot Darkfall =D,   i once met a trader who played darkfall for 3 months and has only killed 5 goblins in that time, goblins are lesser beings thus it doesn't count as murder !

in darkfall there are quiet some crafters/traders. theyr required for bigger guilds to run smoothly too =)

It's a good point.  Every mmorpg I've ever played in 10 years of playing has required me to kill monsters, animals, or people in order to advance.  In some cases, I was even an evil character and killing "innocent" people.  I didn't really consider that I was RPing a mass murderer, but I guess it's a valid point.  I'm sure there are mmorpgs out there that don't have killing as a major aspect of the game but none that I can think of.

I think in CoX and maybe even Champion's Online you don't "kill" anything, you merely incapacitate/knock out enemies.  Yes, there's still violence inherent in the system, but I think these two games have found a clever workaround to not make us all feel like murderers.

And btw, to the Einstein invoking the Holocaust, way to live up to Godwin's Law.

    no...it's not a good point.

What are you playing these games for if you think it portrays you as a "murderer"? (wrongfully so IMO)

Its just a way to kick the bucket and expose the ridiculousness of what games came to be...

Role Playing Games....  most of them you are a mass murderer. Its incredible hard to find one game where progression isnt tied to mass murdering.

Oh, but they are... uh... monsters.... they are... indians... they are uh... orcs... they are uh.... infidels... they are... animals... they are from another race... whatever excuse or lack there off is present doesnt change the fact.

It doesnt matter what it is, as long as they give xp and loot or help me complete quests it seems.

Yes, yes. I'm sure the Orcs and monsters will all hail you as a visionary at the next Civil Liberties meeting.

even if killing is involved in most of these MMOs, I don't think that anyone will qualify your character as a mass murderer.  If anything, it would be a hunter, not sometimes this is done for food or clothing, or saving a group of people or lesser animals to keep a balanced ecosystem.  And then when it comes to killing sentient beings, it's about killing those that threaten the lives of your people/children/family, or your faction/country is commisioning you to lessen the enemy forces.

That's not murder that's duty.  Do you consider Hunters, farmers, or military men murderers?

    Have fun on the internet

MMOs played: Horizons, Auto Assault, Ryzom, EVE, WAR, WoW, EQ2, LotRO, GW, DAoC, Aion, Requiem, Atlantica, DDO, Allods, Earth Eternal, Fallen Earth, Rift
    Willing to try anything new

why complain about this matter, if you don´t like it don´t play the game...   in most game settings its usual you kill that many living things,  it has nothing to do with the  meaning of `mass muderer` .

when you think of the word mass murderer  you think of it as something from our time...    its like comparing  slavery in ancient rome to slavery today...  in ancient rome it was something normal,  nowadays its  `unhuman`, if  people think  that slavery was `unhuman´ in ancient rome, then they are unable to think like the principle of  `historical thinking´...   its about different settings.

I myself, think about this sometimes when slaughtering hundreds of inocent criters.  I think the op has brought up a good topic.  My first real mmo was SWG and I enjoyed being a doctor and bufing people hours on end, and there was no fighting involved.  But theres still that sense that your helping some one else slaughter/massmurder criters.  There has to be some medium to fullfill that dosnt require the mass genocide of some mob in a game, but yet still keep the exitement level up.

aww...dont roll your eyes at me...lol

but how does boxing have to do with mmorpgs....i understand your point..but jeez...were talking mmorgs here..not some ones personal self anguish of weather not said person can take watching boxing or not.  Besides watching something and interacting online are two different things.  At least in the end if some one decides that boxing isnt the thing for that person because its to brutal, then that person can feel ok because that person didnt participate in what said persons didnt like about it, but when a person is interacting with something you dont have that pleasure of knowing that you didnt partisipate in the pilaging/distruction/mass murder of innocent creatures.

Boxing is SO similar to MMOs it's not funny.

If you cannot see that, then this conversation is moot.

Watching, participating.....wtf is the difference to you? Brutality is brutality.

Can't say I've ever roleplayed a Mass Murderer before in an MMO, and I've played quite a few.

Of course, if you consider all killing "Murder", even in self-defense, then I can't help you there.

Sounds like a loaded question more than anything else.
