Star Trek Online is set to be the first major MMO launch of the new year, with a current scheduled release date of February 2nd, 2010, but should you pre-order? That all depends on whether the goodies the various participating retailers are offering are tempting enough for you!
Don't feel like digging them up? No problem! Atari is offering a breakdown of all the pre-order bonuses available at various retailers. Check them out below:
GameStop
GameStop customers receive the ability to command the exclusive and always classic USS Enterprise from Star Trek The Original Series.Best Buy
Best Buy is offering their customers a fun in-game pet. As a Federation Captain, players own a famed Tribble of Star Trek lore that will accompany them on their travels into the final frontier. As a Klingon commander, players control the boar-like Targ, a beast found on the Klingon home world of Qo'noS.Amazon
Amazon is offering an exclusive "Liberated Borg" Bridge Officer. This bridge officer, who comes with unique nanotechnology augmentations, assists in missions and gains experience as the player does.Wal-Mart
With the Wal-Mart Bonus Skill Points package, receive addition skill points that enable players to improve their characters quickly.Target
Target customers who pre-order Star Trek Online receive a unique ground weapon: a TR-116. This rare projectile weapon is used in dampening fields and other challenging environments; it is also modified with a micro-transporter which beams the fired projectiles to targets at close range so that a user can fire without a direct line of site.Direct2Drive
Direct2Drive customers receive an exclusive Multi-Spatial Personal Shield. This advanced personal shield system is based on Borg technology, which constantly regenerates itself and the health of its wearer.STEAM
STEAM is offering customers Chromodynamic Armor. This armor is based on technology brought back from the Delta Quadrant by U.S.S. Voyager improves the damage and critical hits of energy weapons.
GameStop, BestBuy, and Amazon clearly have the most interesting bonuses. Hmm, command the USS Enterprise, receive a Tribble pet, or run alongside a Borg? Choices, choices!

Wow.
Seriously.
Wow.
I was slightly interested in this game prior to reading this, but... really? Command the Enterprise as a pre-order special from Gamestop?
I think I just officially hit the "I'm too old for new MMOs" category. Command the Enterprise? COMMA...
*dies*
Maybe they meant the class of ship that the Enterprise was?

Lol.
Don't give up just yet, we can all hopefully give this game a try during open beta. Besides I really wouldn't mind me a Targ if I end up going Klingon.
EDIT: I think Sovrath is right about the ship. It's just the ship type/class.
"Mr. Rothstein, your people never will understand... the way it works out here. You're all just our guests. But you act like you're at home. Let me tell you something, partner. You ain't home. But that's where we're gonna send you if it harelips the governor." - Pat Webb

That's slightly different. If it isn't the actual Enterprise itself, I could care less.
"Reserve Star Trek Online and receive a GameStop exclusive in-game Starfleet Constitution Class Starship. This unique, upgradable starship comes equipped with blue phasers and an extra engineering station mod slot. Available online and in-store while supplies last."
Yep.
Just the ship class. Poor wording, ed!
Blame Atari. :P I was quoting the release!
Atari ought to sharpen up then.
The Classic Ship they show is NCC 1701 and even as a casual trekky I know that registration.
Also, has Gamestop managed to deal with issues with regard to keys going missing (being consumed) from their stores?
I wouldn't go so far as to actually accuse Gamestop Staff of theft... but it seems to have happened a lot in the past. Very strange that it happens to them so much?
Nothing says irony like spelling ideot wrong.
Does anyone know if the Best Buy in game item will apply to pre-orders done through Future Shop in Canada (which is owned by Best Buy)?
They need to offer a bit more, like Cryptic Points that can be spent in either Champions Online or STO. And not be stingy make it like 2000 or more points not 500 like with CO. Players should expect to purchase additional character slots with those points like in CO. Looking forward to playing it.
Would the Direct2Drive be the same shield in those released videos that were out and about. The personal shield looks handy, but would prefer the box to a download though. (although I have 22 DL games from D2D lol)
After that the Borg guy looks next interesting for me.
Those are number one and two on my list also, that shield looks sweet. But I too would rather have a box. How do you get your product key if you do a download ??
nice list

Yeah I'm probably going with the borg from amazon because I want the box, but I really like the armor from steam too just cause of voyager lol

It gives it you prior to downloading right away. If you pre order it will let you download the game like a day or two before and then the key will be available on the day. My last pre order was Dragon Age and I had the game downloaded 48hrs before on got the key about midday on release day (although was at work so no biggie). Alot of my games are installed on multiple PC's and never had an issue in that area with D2D.
I still thinking I like the shield from the way that Fed chick wiped those borg out nicely :P
Aww and I put this in the STO forum hours ago, haha.
Anyways, here's some thoughts and answers from what I've been able to deduce:
- The Constitution ship I believe you get alongside your newbie ship (levels 1-10ish) or in the next tier (lvls 10-20ish) when everyone else gets the Constitution class.
- The Tribble/Targ are mutually exclusive. So you can only have a tribble if you're Fed and only a Targ if you're Klink.
- Presumably the borg officer will be useful your entire career if it compares to other officers.
- From the description, I think the multi-spatial shield is only for when you're fighting on the ground.
As far as Best Buy in Canada, I've never known them to carry any of the preorder codes to any games, so I wouldn't get my hopes on it. As far as Gamestop/EB not having enough codes, it's quite possible that the employees either take them for themselves/friends, or use them to sell people copies of the games. They really are a poorly run establishment and the only way to really guarantee you get yours is if you hound them to find out when they get them and show up that day, etc.
You should be able to get multiple preorder items (the tribble and the constitution ship, for example) but you will need to preorder a copy of each game, and the bonus item will be tied to the retail key, so you must enter the corresponding retail key too. This means if you want both tribble and ship, you need to preorder and buy 2 full copies of the game, one each from Best Buy/Gamestop.
Personally I'm going for the Borg officer, but I might try to get the steam armor too.

I am sure best buy Canada will have the preorder, they did for AoC, gamestop will too and most likely walmart. Doubt will happen with Target / Amazon though. Amazon.ca is far behind the times and the Target deal might be a Futureshop.ca deal.
What's really pissing me off is that most of these are pre-order bonuses when they should be regular parts of the game. I'm thinking especially of the TR-116 and the Targ pets.
I'd personally love to get the ship armor thing but I really want the box as I'm a collector of things. And I have several collector editions to MMO's I've played regardless if I play them now or not. It's fond memories. So I have my order with gamestop out of it being easy on me since a Gamestop is so close and i can get it the day it's released rather then later in the week.
I've looked on Amazon.ca, FutureShop.ca, and GameStop.ca. According to these three websites, STO doesn't even exist. I think we're going to get screwed in Canada...

It took these stores a few weeks after official announcement for WAR and AoC to come through (Canadian Stores) I asked inside about those games and was able to give money to preorder even though nothing on website for a while. The guys confirmed the bonuses at the time. They are just a little slow to update. The last you will see updated I bet will be amazon.ca (POS).
Hang in there mate I am sure as time gets a little closer they will be up and running.
I am going to make a simple prediction. Somewhere around 50% of the people who preorder the game are going to end up being pissed off and mad about something that was promised and not delivered or just upset about the state of the game on release and not play past the first free month.
Buyer beware. Unless you are actually in the beta and get a chance to really test the game out beyond the newbie area and really do like the game I definately would not buy into any hype and jump out and buy the game right away. Wait a month and see what the die hards have to say about the game once the first free month is up.
Yes I am not going to pre order this yet. The reason why:
(1) I know little to nothing about the game play
(2) I know nothing at all about the game mechinics
(3) The company brining us this game well has had some real duds released.
So thanks for the fish, Ill pass.
Or you can just catch the open beta, which is what I plan to do.
I wonder if these items will be avaible in the Cash Shop, later? Oh well.
Not if we don't buy the game, we won't.
