I mean if were taking a developers history into account here... CO had another MMO with around a 2 year dev cycle correct? With an item mall as well? Using the same engine? That has already been reduced to 10-20k subs in it's first few months after launch? But hey thanks for playing
I would like to know where you got those sub numbers from as I don't believe they are public knowledge.
Merely opinion my friend, merely opinion. I formed it on nothing more than what I saw in the 4ish months that I played CO. It's also something most seem to agree on, so take that as it's worth. But again, just opinion.
I will say this though, they will likely increase sub's now. Nothing like padding the numbers with people playing the unlimited free trial accounts huh? lol.
Still has me in stitches that after 3-4 months after launch they are on there 3rd free weekend and are now the game is almost halfway free to play lol. I mean seriously... 5 more levels and you could play for free up to half the level cap.
My prediction for CO so far is that it will go free to play when DCUO launches. My Prediction for STO so far is that it will go free to play when SW:ToR launches. You don't have to agree lol, just posting my own personal opinion.
And, your "predictions" are based off of what? Do you have anything factual to back up your "predictions"?
I could make a different, but much more logical prediction about both DCUO and SW:ToR. To which, I will right now.
My prediction for DCUO is that it will only become a success because it is F2P. However, it's community will be worse off than WoW's community due to it being F2P and attracting every free-loading individual who doesn't want to pay subscription prices. Not to mention that the cash shop involved in this game could very well become shady based off of the historical actions of $OE with their other games.
My prediction for SW:ToR is that it will become a lesser NGE flop. It will be a piss-poor game due to the history of EA with MMORPG's. Every MMORPG they get their hands on turns to crap. And, it will also suck as Lucas Arts (LA) is just a bunch of money-grubbing worms that care nothing for what the players want. They only care about profits and maintaining the ideal of the SW brand (*cough* SWG NGE anyone *cough*) Therefore, when EA and LA came together to make SW:ToR, it spelled the epic failure of that game.
See, my predictions actually have merit as they are based on something factual (developing companies' histories). What factual information are you basing your "predictions" on?
So you quoted the post and still couldn't figure it out? Read the last line of it and even you can figure it out.
And, you miss my point. To make an actual prediction, one must base it off of something factual. Then, the prediction has merit. However, if the prediction is based off non-factual things, like opinions, then it is pure an utter self-serving horse shit. Which is exactly what GrayGhost79's prediction consists of.
So if I had said from what I know based off of my Promotional 6 month CO sub (its called Beta and by even stating such, you are violating the NDA of said beta, thus the rest of your paragraph is NDA violation material) And then stated my opinion that STO will go free to play when SW:ToR launches you would have accepeted it?
Neither my prediction nor your prediction are fact. They are merely opinions based on what each of us knows and feels. The difference is... you tried to base your personal opinion off as being at least some what factual. I stated mine was nothing more than an opinion from the word go. That's true that neither predictions are fact. However, mine were based off of historical events. Yours was based from your opinion with nothing to back it up. Thus, mine has a more factual basis than yours.

And no I never said I was in the beta, I merely stated I purchased a 6month promotional sub. They had a black friday promotion as well didn't they?
It is funny though that when I state more to back my opinion up you want to holler NDA violation lol.
I mean if were taking a developers history into account here... CO had another MMO with around a 2 year dev cycle correct? With an item mall as well? Using the same engine? That has already been reduced to 10-20k subs in it's first few months after launch? But hey thanks for playing

No problem.
Now if you dont mind, I want to question those numbers. I don't play CO so I have no clue but that just doesn't seem right to me. The reason I say this is there is really no way visually, that I know of, to tell how many subs a company has either in game or not. Case in point, When I logged into a free weekend of SWG, I played around for several hours, did a ton of running around varoius zones and saw practically nobody. Even going to the big cities, there were only a few people around. If I was to take that as an indication of users during prime time on a weekend, I might claim that these SWG could not possibly have more than a few hundred subscribers which we know is not possible. Sony would have taken it down long before that happens. So I just find it odd that your coming up with a number of 10-20k subs when there is absolutely no way to tell how many subs a company actually has. Picking random numbers out of the air and even if you were to state it as opinion is, at least in my mind, wrong.

In CO there is only 1 server. It clearly states how many people are in each instance of each zone. See lol, unlike other MMO's you know exactly how many instances of each zone there are and you know exactly how many people are in each instance of each zone. My opinion is merely based on data I personally collected over a few month period durring prime time and durring off peak hours. It is by no means 100% fact, just an opinion based on what I personally have seen.
In any case SWG is pretty much estimated by most to have only around 50k subs currently and this is a funny side note about SWG
In early 2006, unconfirmed reports showed that only 10,363 subscribers were playing on a particular Friday night, but Smedley denied that subscriptions had fallen this low.
But with all estimates of this nature they are nothing more than educated guesses or plain opinion. Agree with them or disagree it doesn't really matter. Everyone will believe what they choose to believe.
And you as well missed my original edit lol, I'm slow tonight.
I will say this though, they will likely increase sub's now. Nothing like padding the numbers with people playing the unlimited free trial accounts huh? lol.

How long was D&DO P2P before they converted and that game wasn't any more MMOish than GW's when it launched. What about City of Heroes/Villains? Mostly instancing and is still P2P. Besides, you don't even know how large the non instanced areas are, so what good does it do to speculate. For all you know, it could be as large as Eve Online with instances. WAR was mostly successful because of its instanced battlegrounds and not its open RvR. AoC had multiple channels for each zone which proved to be anti-climatic for a PvP game. Of course, STO could be like Darkfall and produce a pile of crap FFA Full Loot game of ganks, hacks, bots, cheats and utter complete nonsense. I however can deal without that. EDIT: By the way, instancing has proven it's worth by eliminating the variable chance of asshats ruining your gameplay. Whether it be a player from an enemy faction or someone on your own side, like kill stealing Sorcerers in Aion.
I personaly hate instancing when its over used, to me the only good time to instance is in large dungon raid situations, one of the things I hated about wow was that every dungon was instanced; before the days of instances every thing I used to step into a dungon alone hunt the weak mobs near the exit until another solo player came in, we could then cut a bit deeper untill another 2 man group came in; we would merge and have a full group with no idel time spaming for a dungon group, have a man or 2 drop from group we just pulled back a bit and waited for another small group to merg with, for me instancing to such as we have seen lately killed the most fun I ever had with a MMO. Granted without instancing you do get more clowns than with, in the same light with a MMO that has a dependancy on social play (i.e. you cant solo the whole game) you find that the clown population tends to dwendle out just past the starter areas this is because no one will group with them and they cant play the game (or at least not effcently) untill they learn some manners (there are exseptions of course) but you used to have a reputation in the game mostly earned by your social manners not the epicness of your loot or even your skill as a player and should that rep get tarnished it hurt your game course in thouse days guilds where more than extended friends lists but enough lamenting the death of the old MMO genre and back to the new.
I dont think the game will die just because its instnaced I do however think it will go down hill fairly early in its life; I dont think this title will daliver what the trek fan wants and if you strip away the appeal of its licensed IP does it have a leg to stand on? well its honistly to early to tell but I haven't seen any thing on it yet that leads me to belive that it will be any better than the rest of the MMOs that have come out the gate as of late and I dont think any of them will make it much past there first year at least not with a respectable/playable population ie.a few full servers.
I will say this though, they will likely increase sub's now. Nothing like padding the numbers with people playing the unlimited free trial accounts huh? lol. [Poll] When will STO become "Free To Play" ? It's lost most of it's momentum before launch. People have been canceling Pre-Orders. The game appears to be full of instancing and small 10vs10 PvP battles.
How many posts claiming the "sky is falling" do you guys read before making these foolish posts,I mean some tool has to make one for every single game on the market good or bad true or not........
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
Looks like the poll is about 60/40 as for will the game become free to play or not.
Which still makes no difference as people who plan to play are not going to break there necks to vote in this idiotic poll like people who want to see it fail will do so, let's be honest this is mmtrollrpg and your post history proves it.

Star Trek online will go free to play when trolls stop making threads like this. So...never.
1: no more development on the game because the company has no money coming in from it, why invest?
2: cash shop, giving some people advantages over others
and, no matter which of the 2, you'll have lots and lots of weird, immature players flocking to the game to play without ever paying, flooding the game with (forgive my words) newbies...

They have already said there will be a cash shop.

Those who feel sympathy for the troll er OP i mean, should check his other posts about STO.
His poll is completely valid as Cryptic games are really not worth a subscription fee as they are more like single player games with multiplayer component.
I mean you could make this single player, with multiplayer maps, and the experience would not change much.
This game may not be the originally expected MMO, but it will never be F2P, because that would severely tarnish Crpytics reputation (what's left of it). I am only talking from having played CO, which I am not gonna lie, disappointed me... and a lot of other people as well. Plus Atari wouldn't allow that; hopefully Atari will kick some cryptic butt to make them make necessary content changes and additions to this game in the coming month.
