It is not 10 miles further than the competiton, IMO...there is nothing groundbreaking about WoW that wasn't done before it came out. They just polished it up a little better than their predecessors. The problem is in the process of polishing it up, they removed much core design elements that made it's predecessors so enjoyable with their depth and immersion.
I tell you why it is light years ahead from the competition right NOW (not when you were playing it "back then"....).
24/7 on line PvP or PVE play in group or solo mode wherever you are, whenever, whatever you play.
From level 10 to level 80...
No other mmorpg comes even close in the blue. Meaning be level 37 and find a group to PvP with or dungeon crawl at 03.30 AM WITH or without experience gains in PVE.... to cite one example.
So many choices, so little fun. That's the really amazing part of it all.
OP, you probably should either take a break or just stick with WOW. Zorn's right about one thing, no new game released today will match its features, will take many years of hard work and some rough times for another game to come close. (and a really big budget)

So WoW has desensitized you? I'm having the same problem, trying all sorts of MMOs, and no luck with getting hooked. Hit up the 360 now I'm stuck on MW2 Multi-Player and I'm starting to have more want to log on to different new games. Find a new niche, something you care about, I'm also thinking about taking some C/C++/C# classes at the local community college, in my free time. Find a way to do something productive with things you care about. Passion when applied right can lead to great things.
On a side note, I advise Zorndorf, or whatever his name is, to stop bragging about his intense affair with WoW. You have almost 4000 posts, and I can guess most are about how great WoW is. Sadly you forget, not much of the community here wants to throw their money at this game you think is God's gift to man. Have fun in your own little world

I disagree. WoW is at least ok in some, good in many and very good in some other areas (it has it all), but if you want something specific from a game, you can find a better one.
There are games with better PvP. There are games with better PvE. There are games with better RP. There are games with better crafting. There are games with better graphics. There are games with a better story. There are games with a better chance to find a good community. There are games that are more casual. There are games that are more hardcore.
I don't know any game with better fishing than WoW though... and if it's diversity you want: nothing beats WoW on a RP+PvP server!
Seems to me that the OP is only trying to justify that he dislikes Aion. Aion is simply not as good of a game as wow. I bought Aion too and played it to around level 20 before I gave up on it. I just feel why should I even bother with a new MMO if I can't have fun with it right off the bat. I mean, I like playing low level characters in Wow from time to time. It's fun from the start imo. I didn't get that feeling when playing Aion, but I tried to ride with it anyway.

You aren't forced into any style of game, or into liking it. Just like you aren't forced to to log in to this site and spew off in a rainbow of a forum post, about how WoW is justified to be the perfect match for all comers.
remember, its all opinions and choices...
Isn't that one of the purposes of a forum? For people to have a place to post their opinions? You don't have to agree with those opinions and you may not like the way that some people post their opinions, but far be it for any of us to try to keep anyone from posting their opinions.

Like I said in my post, it was less of his opinion and more of trying to rudely justify WoW to someone who had already formed an opinion, and was merely asking for advice. As for being on topic, his question was about WoW and my response was also about WoW. I've been around forums long enough to know the order, and I agree. Post whatever opinion you want, but don't expect people to stay silent when someone takes their opinion a little too serious and begins to couple his harshness with bright highlights and underlines.
As for the topic thing, beyond this, it is pretty moot. I am sure the OP got enough answers and I do not wish to derail this any further.
I want to me clear this is not a bash, or praise on WoW. Its my personal experience in how the game essentually RUINED my expereince with other games. After getting to about lvl 25 in Aion i've realized that World of Warcraft has completely ruined my mmorpg drive.. (like a sex drive but for mmo's lol) After about 3 years of on and off WoW, I find that i cannot maintain attenton or interest in "The Grind". All mmorpg's involve "The Grind" in form of quests and mindless mob slaying. The problem is that with 3 years of WoW's quick levelling, quest based grind, my expectations for levelling speed is dissapointed and i know it isnt the game's fault (Aion). What sucks is that i used to play similar asian styles grind based MMO's (tantra and legend of ares) i used to spend hours hacking away at mobs no problem. Same starting zone.. who cares!! i had fun.. WoW introduced me to 10 optional starting zones and quick ass levelling. How can any one go back to the basics? What i'm saying is WoW has completly ruined my experience with other MMORPG's Has any 1 else experienced this desensitization? Do you think a time of mmo-abstinence would refresh my patience for "The Grind" and allow me to keep attention and at least minimum interest in other games? I'm incredibly interested in hearing what any 1 has to say partaining desensitization caused by WoW. But i must ask plz don't turn it into "WoW sucks"
I apologize for any unneccesary repetition and sucky spelling, its late.. but a good time to post!! I'll probably be editing to correct some repetition and better word what im trying to say.. Happy posting
yeah WoW is to blame of course, then wait for Cataclysm, roll a worgen or goblin. See you back in WoW soon.
I went away from wow for a long long time. Promised myself I would never be back. Well with STO going into the crapper, I resubbed to WoW. Trying new stuff, a lot has changed, I feel like a noob again... fun!
WoW has swamped players with the requirement to _constantly_ upgrade gear. If you don't you are yesterday's news and looked down upon by the hardcore.
I remember when I played WoW to have some fun, but now it's pure competition, and will always be like that, and looking back, always has been like that. If players want something else than that then a resub to a different game is for the best, and they might even have some fun rather than put up with the 'L2P and if you can't stand the heat get the hell out of the kitchen' brigade.
yeah Iam bored of WoW now. Cant Do PvP end Game anymore, with lvling gear from early WoTLK. And that was my fav in TBC. Cant get to raid or anything. And since WoW is so great, iam having a hard time finding a replacment, that follows the Path of WoW, but adds uniquness
A hint:
Level a character with experience turned OFF in the open world and dungeon play.
Only put it back on again to do Bg's and level when you find the final frontier of your levels in PVE.
Professions are very rewarding when you make crafted gear at this pace.
Advantages:
- it brings the adventure on a whole new level.
- You ARE the king at your (hidden) level. Mostly defeating players 5 levels higher than you in PvP. record was 21 against 28.
- Believe me it is very liberating NOT having to watch an experience bar.
- By the absence of twinks these days in the leveling BG's, you are the King, as early as X5.
- You have much more fun learning the class in its extremes.
- You don't even need the support of your old mains (as gold is rather easy to get with maxed out professions).
- You'll see the world setting a last time before CATA strikes (but better hurry because the earth quakes are already showing up).
thx Zorn, but thats why I made that Delvling thread a while ago. Because I wanted to Get my second lvl 80. (I have never had more then 1 character at cap at same time before. plus I wanted Army of Dead) But damn, a bad mistake that was.
Now iam screwed. I didnt know anything about the Exp stopper, since I was basicaly new to WoW in that sence, since I havnt played WoW since a week before Dual Spec Patch came ot. And alot had changed. I miss the lvl 71-79 AV brackets
My DK rocked then. And my Main was already at 80 before I had quit. now he is unplayable, no matter how skilled I am. The closes thing a Old School PvPer in this situation can do in PvP, is be a support, with thing such as CC,Healing, and Body Target Taunting. Other then that, you will have no effect in PvP. I cant even dent Clothys anymore. My HP is horrid (2-3 shoted), little Resilience, and no way of grinding out PvP gear.
Plus there is no way for retuning players to get a decent PvP weapon other then the randomness of the LFG drops and stuff from heroics. I cant do Arena in this condition. No matter how Skilled I once was.
Ugh, I feel the same way as the OP... I didn't bother to read many replies but I couldn't bare to do Aion end game because it's horrid.
I despise World of Warcraft, absolutely HATE that game, and never ever will play it again, and let Blizzard take my money when all blizzard has done is give people things in the form of patches, and RIP them away from a paying customer, like twinking, ever since they got rid of twinking, I quit the very week it happened.
I have no use for end game either, I cannot devote that much time to hearing people QQ like babies about drops, and whine like children about wiping on raid bosses, so I found my niche in twinking at level 69.
All I ever hear level 80s say, is acting like babies calling people "noobs" because their gear sucks, doesn't matter how good of a player they are, they could be a damn good healer or tank, but people act like babies and boot you from dungeons because you don't meet a certain gearscore or have "this amount of epic gears", because they are such a better human being than you are, you don't deserve to be in their presence, little WoW twits, I despise every one of them.
I've completely lost all interest in any MMORPG game after realizing it's 85% gear and 15% skill, even Diablo 2, the first game I fell in love with, which isn't even an MMORPG, I hate now, because you can't even compete when you start playing, you have a "twink grind of gear" to do, which everyone else that is full of it calls "keeping the game interesting".
In my opinion an interesting game is a balanced game that the deciding factor of a battle doesn't revolve around who has wasted 98% of their real life to act like a baby on the net and call you a newb because your gear doesn't match his.
I don't even know what to do now, after I quit Aion and realized how sick and tired I am of pointless exp grinds, only to face a neverending pointless gear grind in some form or another. The whole design is flawed about MMORPGs, it isn't about lore or the journey anymore, it's about getting the exp grind out of the way ASAP, so you can start the neverending gear grind.
And even the lore has gear checks on most of the bosses which also ruined it for me, because I am hardcore and flip flop from hardcore to casual.

This is a very good post. Ive recently purchased a PS3 and while I hold a sub for LOTRO and do enjoy the game I find myself spending more and more time on single player games. Maybe its me or maybe its the state of the genre but either way I havnt seen a new MMO in over a year now that even warrants a try from me. Maybe EQ 3 if it ever surfaces but other than that I have not seen nor heard of anything that will be getting me to sub after I reach my limit of LOTRO. Which will happen, most likely before spring.
Try DRAGON AGE ORIGINS.. excellent RPG game. In fact i have been thru it 3 times already and still wanting to go back and play it thru with a different character. and still only 60% done into the game... 6 different beginnings and a few different endings.
this will give you a good break away from MMOs.
It is for me.
