Does racism exist in MMORPG's?

Well, I was playing face of mindkind(It's back, and mostly empty), and, my char is dark-skinned. on one of the colonies, a guy gunned me down and called my char the "N" word while he did it. So, yeah, it turns out that, on the internet, people get to be racist without consequence. What, you thought people wouldn't act these things out in a gameworld? no offense, but you ask a silly question. Of course there's racism in games..people play games, and as long as you have people, you have racists.

Racism exist within people so wherever they go racism goes.

I play a dark skinned character in Fallen earth. Yesterday a guy told me that i must be very greasy and smell bad since my character has black skin.

Racism in MMORPGs is actually a good thing.

The only form of racism that exists in MMOs is that which people bring to the table.

How is it that everyone posting in this thread managed to either take the OP as joking....or turn it into something about role played factions?

I think he was SERIOUS...and I think he meant along the lines of racism from an OUT of game perspective.

I will say this....I have made several black characters, because I think it lends to variety in games that seem almost EXCLUSIVELY filled with pink pasty character avatars (or purple, or blue, or green...but seldom black, unless they  have fur). And I have had people ASK me, "Are you black in real life? I mean...not that it would MATTER....."  So uhm...yeah, then why did you ask me?

So yes....I think racism exists everywhere. People still "see" skin color. Even I see it....when I notice how predominantly "white" characters tend to be, and then want to make darker skinned humans, because it seems so imbalanced to me.

Would be great if the world was color-blind (at least in regards to judging BY color of skin), but I don't think it is just yet.

Really...MMOs are a microcosm of the real world, after all. The populations probably reflect the same sort of diversity we have out of game, we just don't SEE (with our physical eyes) what each other looks like all the time.

Well, its very hard to take a Female Gnome Deathknight seriously..  on a more serious note? what is it, if not racism.. if you go out to kill something because its a different race to your own -  in WoW its a case of alliance vs horde - humans and (good) elves, dwarves and gnomes against taurens orcs etc.

Very few games dont base their in game combat/factions etc, on racial differences, its practically standard faire for MMO's these days after all

its probably a good idea not to confuse racism inside a MMO with racism IRL, their 2 very different things

If I saw a black character in game, I'd sure as hell ask if he/she was black in real life. Why? Because it's a fucking question. I'm curious. If he's black, he's black. We all "see" skin color, of course. That's unavoidable. But in today's world, (some) people throw around "racist" way too often without understanding what it really is.

Again, I reiterate: Racism is either a) the belief of one race that they are superior to another race, or b) prejudice/discrimination by one race against other race(s). Racism is not asking a black character if he's black in real life.

Racism is simply exercising freedom of choice and is inevitable given nature's tendency towards diversifying. If things didn't discriminate against other things, there wouldn't be anything.

Most people are 'racist' for perfectly good reasons. If you've had a significant amount of negative experience with something of a certain type, e.g. Mondays, the colour yellow, glass, obese people, etc, you're going to become adverse to it. It's basic risk management. Eat the red berries and you often feel sick, so you don't eat the red berries. Go near the people with bones through their nose and you're often cooked alive, so you don't go near the people with bones through their nose. Simple. 'The Powers That Be' expect you to believe whatever they tell you is correct, but no fools going to believe the opposite of what he's experienced first hand, even if it is supported by a pile of carefully massaged statistics that carefully leave out the bad bits.

Some people are just too different to get on and even though we're all from the same species, humans are just too complex to just go along as one big group of happy people. If someone hates me and wants nothing to do with me because of the way I look, the food I eat, the music I listen to etc, fair enough. If I was upset by this I could say "It's their loss!", but it doesn't bother me and it's not their loss; they're probably better off without me as we have different tastes and needs and would only be in continuous conflict.

It's funny though, I find the people who are the first to cry "Racist!" are usually the perfect embodiment of their own pet concept, they just don't realise it.

    Again....

What DIFFERENCE does it make what color my skin is in real life?   You're curious?  Why?  Does it matter?  And if it doesn't matter....why do you want to know?

I guess I don't get it.  I'm not saying that asking, in and of itself, is racist at all.....I just don't understand the desire to know if it makes absolutely no difference....

let me point this out to you. you can change the way you eat or what you eat, the way you dress, the music you listen, the way you smell and look but you can not change the color of your skin or your race because thats they way you are born. So to hate someone for their color of skin is not same as hating someone for wearing a pink t shirt.

You have choice to change the t shirt but no one chooses the color of their skin before they are born.

My advice to you would be to ask the worst 'racist' you know whether or not it's actually the 'colour of skin' that they dislike or whether that just happens to be a concurrent variable.

The suggestion that 'racists' judge people based on skin tone is as much a stereotype as the idea that all Muslims would happily kill innocent people in the name of Allah. If only it were that straightforward...

The only point your statement makes is that your adept with sarcasm, but short on coherent arguments.

Please enlighten me as to why it's wrong to discriminate against someone based on characteristics they cannot change yet, by your implication, it's ok to discriminate against someone as long as they are able to change the characteristic that is the basis of the discrimination they face.

By your logic, it's perfectly ok to victimise someone who has a particular taste in music (because they can change that) but to discriminate against applicants for the role of airline pilot if they are blind is somehow wrong.

Your assumption is that all 'racism' has no foundation in reason and I get the feeling your comfortable with that idea. In many cases, that may be the correct assumption. However, too often it isn't which is why 'racism' ceases to go away.

Where did anyone say that ANY kind of discrimination was okay? I don't recall seeing that..... But the conversation was about RACISM, which is discrimination based on race.  That doesn't mean that other forms of bigotry are OKAY...no  one said that.

Your assumption is that all 'racism' has no foundation in reason and I get the feeling your comfortable with that idea. In many cases, that may be the correct assumption. However, too often it isn't which is why 'racism' ceases to go away.

All you're proving is that you're a racist and proud of it.

    I don't see your point.....lol.

Telling someone they can't fly the airplane because they are BLIND is not the same as telling someone they can't fly it because they are of a particular RACE, even though they have the same ability and training as someone of another RACE, let's say.

You're mixing definitions of different things and trying, for your own purposes, to call them the same thing, and they are not.

RACISM has no foundation in reason. Generalizations never do. If 10 people out of 100 (of any given people group) do a certain thing you don't like....does it give you just cause to label them all negatively because of what 10 of them do?  That is not "reasonable," as you claim. It is entirely self-serving and bordering on being a delusional way to justify your own pre-supposed knowledge of people that you have not even met, and certainly do not KNOW.

Take WOW for example. There's no reason for Horde to ever fight Alliance. We have seem so far in the five or so years that WOW has been running that neither side will NEVER have any impact on the other side. Neither side has any reason to fear loss to the other side. If one side stopped fighting completely they would be at no disadvantage whatsoever.
A display of abusive behaviour towards another race, especially when completely baseless, is racism by definition.

That is an awesome statement.  Would it be fair to say that some MMORPG's that have different races in the game and where the objective of the game is to terminate/hinder the race opposite of your own thus renders that game racist?

This brings me to a new question.  If you agree that some MMORPG's are racist do you think that this has an impact on the world as we live in it today?

nope. I see Horde in WoW as enemys because of their actions. not their race (WRATHGATE)

guys, anyone who has gone through the trouble to justify racist attitudes, put actual thought in defending discrimination, isn't going to be swayed by any argument, or any holes poked in their "logic".  Pointless to try. As a black man, I'd love to take every racist and put them on a desert island away from the rest of us. problem is(and, by the way, racists come in every color), there isn't enough land to hold them all. most of humanity is racist to a degree. case in point: I moved into a new apt recently. turns out, I've got a pretty bad roach problem. didn't see any when I checked the place out. anyway, I decide, since bldg mgmt isn't doing anything, to call the health dept, since they do regular checks for that kind of thing here. I speak to the woman on the phone, she sets up an appt. to stop by. the office is literally a 10 min drive from my apt. she shows up. the look on her face was priceless. You see, I don't sound "black" on the phone. I work in the entertainment industry(actor) I do film and voiceover work. I sound as cultured and upper-crust as you please. She was afraid to come in. she did, but, oh my god she was uncomfortable. it was so clear..did I deserve that? no. But I got it anyway. People don't care. the human race is ignorant to the extreme, and they carry it with them everywhere they go, so it only makes sense they would bring it into a gameworld. why wouldn't they? So, don't bother trying to enlighten these assholes. let them wallow in their knuckle-dragging stupidity. they like it.

I'm not racist but I don't hate people that are because that would In my eyes make me just as bad as them. Why ? because I'm hating someone for who they are.  Yes Racist and Prejudice is different but I see them as equally as bad.  To tell you the truth I only think there is one race The Human Race. The funny thing is people say they want to be treated equally but yet we are always trying to separate ourselves,by what political standpoint we have  or get special attention by our skin color.

I don't agree with affirmative action at all, I think the best qualified person should get a job. Not someone lesser qualified because they are black, hispanic or from a different planet. Does that make me racist? I don't think so, some may  think so but I don't agree with it because its because people are getting special treatment not because of someones skin is getting a job someone else should have.If anything affirmative action is condoning racism its self because usually its the qualified white guys that aren't getting a job because they are white.

Ive seen some racism in MMO's I've seen people named Nigger and all sorts of stupid names. There will be racist people pretty much everywhere. I'm not sure if that was what the OP was getting at or if he was talking about racism in the actual game like one faction is hating on another.

I agree that they both probably show either a lack of intelligence, or at least some sort of skewed interpretation of reality,  in my opinion. Broad sweeping generalizations usually do, regardless of their underlying motivations. And that being said...I can't generalize WHY some people are racists either. I THINK many suffer from delusional thinking and misconceptions , but that wouldn't apply to every single one. NOTHING applies to every person in ANY set group.

I believe that as well. And yes...people say they want equality, but do often go out of their way to tear it down by magnifying our differences rather than our commonalities.

Affirmative action does not, in my opinion, work in the way it was intended to work. And you are 100 percent right here. I don't agree with the way it is being applied EITHER. The most qualified person for a job should get it, regardless of race, gender, political persuasion, religious affiliation, or sexual preference.

The real answer to the OP's question is....yes, there is racism in MMOs. And yes, you're encouraged to be a "role playing racist" when you are encouraged to hate a faction simply because they are "gnomes," or "undead," or whatever races you want to assign from games OTHER than WoW. But does it cause you to be a racist IRL?  Well....does slaughtering hoards of boars in a game cause you to go get a job as a butcher?  No. That would be silly.  I can play a mass murderer in a game...and not become one in real life. Possibly the acutely mentally ill might have a problem (and that is a bit disconcerting), but the vast majority do not.

But that is talking about race "wars" in a GAME.  If we're talking about racism in MMOs that crosses the boundary of virtual space, then yes....I think, as you said, that there is racism (and / or prejudices) of every kind....every where, including in MMOs. Any time you gather together mass numbers of people, there will likely be every variety of mind set you can imagine, represented therein. And no matter how progressed mankind becomes, nor how enlightened, there will always be those people that refuse to grow and would rather  hold dearly to the antiquated past, no matter HOW MUCH it flies in the face of REASON, common sense, and critical thinking,  to do so.
