As I watched this epic movie, I was thinking of how awesome an MMO version of it would be.
Creating two characters, your human and your "virtual" Na'vi. You could fight for both humans or Na'vi without even permanently choosing a side. You could work as a human spy on the Na'vis side. Level up your human character and fight with mechs and machine guns or level up your Na'vi with "dragon" (the bird thing) mounts and bows and arrows. I think the idea of having two characters in one would be awesome.
Anyone else have this thought?

I would hate it, since the movie was everything but creative and original. They called it James Cameron's Re-Invention of film. Please, the script was just pieces of others films put together in a story line that we have seen a 10000000 times..... The only thing that was amazing was the CGI, nothing more.
Really people call it creative, I cant stop laughing. This is just as creative as the fantasy genre in the past 20 years: 0. Really, Cameron just took animals from our planet and gave them a alienlike/deepsea look. I've seen dogs, rhinos and the worst of all were the horses. Yep, there actually were horses on the alien planet, but oooooooooh they had 3 legs! How creative! And they glow in the dark, that soooo cool. Not to mention that the Navi are an exact copy of the native indians with horses, body painting and even freaking bow and arrow. This is simply impossible. Got a piece of IMDB that puts it wonderfully.
"Interesting how the indigenous bi-pedal humanoids evolved nearly identical human features, including tear ducts, facial expressions, and mirror-imaged emotions. Odd their independently developed culture seems eerily like an idealized image of Native American Indians, as fantasized by an illiterate modern neophyte. For the 'suspension of belief' principle, let's accept the absurd notion such a race could develop and move on to the eclectic technology employed by the evil invaders. Consider for a moment the microbiology and neuroscience required to 'grow' a DNA hybrid and connect same to a telepathic machine with no apparent range limitations. Contrast this phenomenal science with a military still employing Vietnam era M60 machine guns, tear gas, and bombs. Hmm….."
Now don't get me wrong, my rant is only focussed toward the lack of creativity and poor script. I still enjoyed the film for what it was: A mindless actionfilled blockbuster with no story that is meantt for entertainment. And it was great at it! But I just don't think it diserves the credit it gets. This isn't nearly the best movie every made, not even the best of 2009. Its filled with plagiarism (Dances with wolves in space) and should get the "best CGI" award at best.
I'd rather have an MMO with a real alien planet that was NOTHING like ours. That would be amazing to explore, since it would actually be new and things you never imagined. Sadly the creativity that is needed for such a MMO is not to be found in the businessplans of current developers.
I'm not going to critque the film..
But the premise of playing on both sides in an mmo could be amusing as long as they are completely different experiences.
On the one hand, it's a no brainer. A movie named Avatar? Why not make it into a game where players have avatars? (Do you want to date my avatar?)
I mean, what franchise is NOT going to be made into an MMORPG after LOtRO and AoC?
On the other hand, everyone trying to take on WoW either fails miserably, or barely stays in business. So a big budget Avatar MMORPG sounds like a bad investment, or at least EXTREMELY risky.
The Avatar world with all the colorful creatures and cool forest etc., would be fun to roam around in.
Impiro a movie critic you are not. Please explain how this film is any different than any other film out there? They all copy plots from other movies. The movie industry is inured to this. Look at 2007, they selected "No Country for Old Men" as the best picture which had probably the most ridiculous plot I have seen in a movie lately, some guy kills close to 20 people and walks away at the end with no one looking for him? When a film gets high marks without even having a decent plot, it shows you how horrible the industry and it's critics have fallen.
Avatar is being acclaimed for the design and effects, I thought that was truely amazing. The only place you have a chance of seeing something new in this genre is avoiding the big theater chains.
As to making a MMO out of this, it really would not work if you sat down and thought about it.
Well, in that case I guess you could either stand up and think about it, or sit down and not think about it, and it works just fine.
We would only know how cool it would be, if they made that Avatar MMO : )
The movie was awesome. So a MMO would also be awesome!
And i dont care if we have seen the same thing 10000 times before, we must have about 1000 "identical" people here on the forum as well, and that have not stopped anyone of enjoying it.
I agree though I think it is a bit unfair to lump LOTRO or even AOC with this turd of an idea for that matter. Let me say this I haven't seen the movie but I also have zero interest in it it just looks too flighty and happy go lucky from what I've seen and I know no one else is really going to care but isn't "Avatar" the last air bender from the Nickelodeon show who I might add is coming out with his own feature film that I'm fairly certain is going to be better than this glorified cartoon that Cameron unleashed upon us. When the holiday season rolled around and the commercials for this movie started running it was one of those moments in life that you realize you may actually be getting older and maybe you just don't "get it" anymore.
Atleast with LOTRO and AOC they are built in worlds that are a natural fit for the industry standard nowadays, what other reason is there for making an MMO out of this? Gang every movie that makes a hundred million dollars does not automatically make for an awesome mmo idea (which seems to be what everyone thinks after hearing about Harry Potter,Twilight and now this.
I'm not even saying if they did make an mmo out of this it wouldn't sell, I just know I would not be buying and I have a sneaking suspicion that it wouldn't last long like I hope the memory of this half assed cartoon does.
Oh and in case no one has seen it you should look up the trailer for the Last Airbender and I think Nick should have sued Camerons ass for stealing Angs name like that.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
Your post trips me out you start out bashing one poster for putting up nothing but opinion and then you continue to inundate us with your opinion. Honestly unless I already agree with you why should I trust your opinion of No Country for old men over a critics or why should I think Avatar is a good movie because you think it is. He thought the movie sucked just like you thought the 2007 movie of the year sucked sounds like differing opinions and nothing more. And again a decent plot is your opinion just like it's Impiro that the damn plot sucks just state you didn't think so and move on what is the extra chest beating for?
Now if you really sat down and thought about it you can name plenty of mmo's that wouldn't work or atleast we thought they wouldn't but they did. I just don't see what qualifies you to make that statement especially since you then don't mention one thought that would lead you to this conclusion, we are all supposed to now just be able to think as you do and agree, ok.
Again I haven't seen the movie and won't it just didn't appeal to my senses in any way shape or form but I'm not going to go swearing about what is good/bad and I even stated myself I would not play an mmo made from this IP but that doesn't mean it wouldn't work or that there is no market for it.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
I think it would absolutely kick much ass. Avatar is without a doubt one of the best movies I've seen in terms of both story and effects. It would easily translate into a great MMO world if it were done right. It's a lot more original than most of the games out today.
I was thinking as I watched 'Avatar'....this is what the land of the Night Elves SHOULD have looked like!
I mean, they were basically 12ft tall night elves. I'm not complaining, I will be seeing that movie again a few times.
That said, an MMO that recreated 'Pandora' would get my business....so long as it was as beautiful as the Movie made it. I am speaking purely as a game environment. I think the races, politics, etc should be something totally new.
In a genre that is now dominated my gear-driven play, can you see a race like the Na'vi where your mightest warriors are wearing teh same dental floss armor as the trainees. lol you'll a planet full of Na' Vi women only....

It fits how the game is made with it's multiplayer, but I see nothing that should be in a MMORPG, as it's far to limited with only 2 species, besides do you recall Tabula Rase? That didn't really work now did it? What makes you think it would for a Avatar MMO. Because it currently somewhat popular?
Secondly any idea how many would be able to play the quality this game would need, again play the singleplayer game, look how grand the alien jungle looks like, if we want that in a MMORPG expect that game to be for a very small amount of players due to it's high graphics settings couple that with MMORPG gameplay feature's and hte game would go beyond any graphic setting we have currently, it might even make high end systems crawl on their knees.
Like I said enjoy the movie and if you like it in a game form just enjoy the singleplayer game with it's multiplayer settings as that's the only thing I feel fits the movie with only 2 sides, far to limited for a MMORPG.
Here another topic made about it: How about an 'Avatar" MMO? 12/20/09
The Matrix also was most original in both story and effects but have you heard anything from The Matrix Online?
Where themepark games try to hide that they are copying WOW, games like Mortal Online and Darkfall make no attempt to hide their inspiration

Awesome idea! If ever there was a movie fit for an MMO it would be Avatar! It would work great!
Yeah! Just like the Matrix movies and Matrix Online! It was perfect....
Uhm...wait...

I haven't seen the movie but I loved this part of your post. Unfortunately this sort of thing is all too common in science fiction. The "science" part is usually a mish-mash of egregious errors and fantastical gimmicks we are supposed to accept based on the sole authority of a few scientific sounding buzz words.
That's not to say it can't be entertaining but it does grate on the nerves sometimes.
Would be as great as all these other MMOs based on a popular IP. Like LotR, AoC, Matrix, and SWG...they have all been....well I guess maybe not such a good idea.
All we have seen over the years with any MMO that uses a popular IP is a hype for using that particular IP, then settle for a mediocre MMO that doesn't even come close to what that original IP is about.
Sure Avatar was a great movie...just my personal opinion that popular IP titles should stay away from MMOs.
LotR is a fine MMO as well as SWG (before the nge). I find that the ones based on popular IP titles tend to be the better MMOs.

Completely agree, with the exception of WoW. SWTOR is getting a huge fan base and the release date really hasn't even been determined yet.
Actually pretty much anything can be adapted into a MMO. The success will depend on its features (retention rate) and on its popularity (using existing IPs), the second is not mandatory though.
As it's known, using a famous IP will only assure you a good amount of hype from its fans, you will also need to hype the gaming community, and it will all fail if it isn't fun for long enough, which is the main requisite for success. EVE, to name one, used a new or unknown IP as far as I know, yet managed to hit the SUCCESS mark, sometimes starting slowly but the point is it's been growing and growing.
At first I thought the film was heavily influenced from the game industry. But then I remembered that a lot of the ship designs came from the 1970's sci fi conceptual art of pre production "Aliens". Teh technology is sort of trademark that goes back to aliens and the ships in Terminator. Which he made. While I was watching Avatar in 3d I laughed to myself thinking that this would not make a good MMO. It would make a better FPS multi player. We are already saturated with to many MMORPG's. No offense to to the OP.
Avatar Multiplayer Official Launch Footage
I agree. Maybe not an Avatar MMO but maybe another MMO of that style.
Avatar is an enormously entertaining piece of screen spectacle that goes a long way toward redeeming the somewhat debased concept of a Hollywood blockbuster...
Personally I think it's an amazing film. I have been waiting for a long time for a film that would excite me and I found what I've been looking for in this film. I don't think it's a bad idea if they're gonna make an MMO out of the movie. If ever they make an MMO from this I would be happy to try it.
I honostly would like to see those of you who feel Avatar(the Movie) would make a great MMORPG to explain what is seen by you that fits a MMORPG or how and what feature's you think might make it a great MMORPG, sorry I aint seeing it.
It fits perfectly for the multiplayer game aswell it's singleplayer game, which was released last month.
Is it mainly because it's new that we see with most new released movies or even singleplayer games that people asume it would make a great MMORPG?
Please explain...........
