Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures: Low-level Characters to be Purged in Server Merge Preparations

  • The biggest concern I can see with this are mules.  These "mule" characters are usually just level 5 but are loaded with items, resoures and/or cash.   Some folks are going to be really unhappy when their mules get wiped.

All my systems can play it on high quality settings and it looked beautiful. Maybe I have been spoiled by EQ2 and WOW and some others for never deleting my toons whatever level they are. At least I will go back to them whenever I can. They get my 3 month sub everytime I return. They don't mind me hogging the database while I take care of RL stuff. Thanks for your understanding. Peace.

You're forgetting that WoW has an exponentially higher income from subscriptions than Age of Conan, or any other MMO for that matter. They can afford to pay for the databases. The same with Everquest 2 and Sony, Sony is running 9 MMOs with 4 in development, they are a behemoth in terms of developers and, with the station pass, have an enormous amount of cash flowing in. Everquest 2 and World of Warcraft also have a higher number of servers than Age of Conan, meaning Age of Conan will run out of character names far more quickly than the other two will.

Funcom isn't "poor" but they are not a huge developer. They faced a pretty hefty financial situation back in 2009, and the server merges are likely part of their ongoing plans to consolidate costs. Age of Conan, however, isn't going anywhere (barring some sudden bankruptcy), and Funcom has no plans of shelving the title.

So stop taking everything as an insult, and stop comparing local shops to Wal Mart. World of Warcraft generates more income than some third world countries' GDP, you can't compare what Blizzard can do with their finances to any other developer.

You guys are seriously overreacting. This was a courtesy notification that they are deleteing low level accounts that have not been paid for in over 7 months, in order to make the server merge easier. They are deleting your loser accounts so that the people who actually play can get some improvements. Stop being whiners.

In order for a a toon to be deleted it has to be less than level 20, and you must not have paid your subscription in over 7 months.

-no toons will be deleted from any account, no matter what level, for anyone who has paid a subscription in the last 7 months.

They've given advance notice on their site and are sending e-mails as well, so noone can say they didn't know.
All in all, it's nothing worth crying about for those who genuinely have an interest in playing AoC.

On the one hand, this irks me because I have probably 8-10 characters in the level 10-19 range that will be deleted, and I am a slow leveler so to restart would just be too much for me. My plan had been to come back to AoC when I upgrade my PC later this year and have both hard drive space and processing power to match for the game. Now I'm not so sure I care.

That said, I kind of like that a lot of names will get freed up...I hate placeholder characters (even though I use them too) for names; the idea that those names will be freed up is appealing. I just wish the method wasn't so lame.

Oooh then I guess I don't have to worry....I usually subscribe for a mont or two every 6-7 months; play for fun for those six to eight weeks, then burn out and move on to something else for a while.

What does another row in a database cost?  Absolutely nuthin'!  What does it cost you to tell me you are purging something of mine?  Absolutely everything.  'nuf said.

Anyone who feels that a character created on opening day, sub cancelled and forgotten is due their character over a year later is wrong in the head.

You do not own the character, the mmo provider does. Think of your sub fee as rent on your character.

Doesn't really matter whether people are justified in thier indignation over this - customers are often silly, so its just good business sense to be considerate of their silliness, unless there's a good reason not to be.

It's just nice to hold people's characters, as long as the game's alive. No matter how low level. If they need to rename them, I understand, but I guess purging is easier, and they aren't that concerned about driving a few more prospective players away.

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

True, but you are forgetting that wow has i.e. 100 more servers, 100 more personel, .... etc etc.

And with that they did (if they will) I'm not coming back. Will not subscribe for month just to transfer in half hour from my "mule" alt all that has collected to higher level characters. Shame, because on 2nd place after Wow there is (was) Aoc.

You seriously do not understand, do you? What have to do that explanation 7 months or for that matter 3 months, 24 months??? I have played, have all level between 40 and around 60, except mule alt 5, full of loot and ingame currency.

So you think I must subscribe every 7 months to Aoc?

O, and, btw, ... why 7 months and lv. 20? Can be also lv. 40 and 3 months for that matter, ... etc etc.

What are they doing will burry even more Aoc that has recovered pretty good after cataclysmic start. And I would be sorry, because I enjoed a lot.

There is NO EXCUSE for doing this. If not other, they can move to some other server, rename to anything they like (xyz000002) ... but when I log back after 1 month, 3 months, 7 months, 2 years ... i want to have there all alts, from lv. 1 to 99. Period. Unless of course servers are no more. And this could happen.

What a silly argument!  You are such a packrat that you had to use a mule to carry basically junk?   By the time you do go back to that game it will be basically that...junk.  Why would anyone leave cash on a mule?

If you would only think a second and read your posts you would realize how ridiculous you sound.

More games should do this, it would free up a lot of names.

You must be mind behind this idea of deleting low alts, optimizing, etc. :-)

Well, seriously, there must be some idiot like you at Funcom with similar reasoning. Or you do not know anything about ingame economy. Or you play single alt from start to top. I do not.

I always like to try all classes (btw have purchased additional slots for Aoc, besides having free for being subscribed long enough)... so si obvious choice to have single alt that does all ah transactions, that holds mining, herbal, potions, ... etc resources usable for all alts in single place, ... etc etc.

In wow before wotlk i had 9 maxed out alts + mule warrior lv. 1 with nearly all money, loot, resources, ... etc etc. And now some smart ass(hole) would like to delete what for his opinion is not worth keeping. And why? Because they want to cut expenses for i.e. 100 milions of $ worth? Are you complete computer illiterate? How much do you think would cost to save that  few rows of data and not upsetting any1? Not even for wow this should generate any concern about ... immagine to Aoc.

But ... as always ... time will show who is right and who is not. But I would be sorry for Aoc because i like game even if I have not played so far for about half year. At Funcom programmers are not problem ... all ther rest are.

Absolutely. Purchasing game client for i.e. 50€ I have purchased for LIFETIME account on their servers. Subscription cover playing.

Of course if they have to many subscribers or returning subscribers, this is great way to get rid of them. Simple as that.

Try not paying 7 months on your car installment and see if they don't send a Repo man to your house to get it back.

*sigh* ... amazing what people think they're entitled to even without paying anything for it.

I agree with Funcom here. Cancelled account = no guarantee that they'll keep characters forever. Yes they can. I wish even Blizzard would do the same so we see less characters with non-standard öùê names.

Edit it takes few hours to get to 20...

IMO if you really cared about the low level toons they wouldnt be low lvl, you'd be getting them leveled....with that said I dont think it cool just to delete toons just because you dont want them clogging up the database.

(AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Kilikki begs the raving Rabbid to take her back....)

All my opinions are just that..opinions. If you like my opinions..coolness.If you dont like my opinion....I really dont care.

Completely wrong reasoning. I buy a car for cash and I pay to state what state wants to keep my car driving on roads. But after a year i decide i will not be using my car for i.e. 2 years. I do not pay assurance, statal taxes, ... car just stay in garage.

Is any1 there that will take away my car? I guess not.

So, after 2 years I decide to continue to drive my car and he is there, untouched in garage.

Here with Aoc, i have purchased a car that I want to put in garage because nobody will driving it for year or two. And what happen? Aoc personel come in middle of the night and take away my purchased car. My property, my account. For sure will never buy again car from them.

If you take out a loan to pay anything it is not your property untill all installments are settled. If you fail on a payment the bank or whoever gave you the loan has the legal right to repossess that item (car, whatever) to serve as collateral on what you owe them.

In AoC and every other online game with the same payment strategy it's exactly the same, when you buy the game you buy the medium, just the files, the DVD and the pretty case in which it came...  normally they also offer you a month's worth subscription, that's an offer they give you... not a right you have just because you bought the game.

Your account is only created when you register the serial code that comes with the game, until then you have purchased the game anyway, registering that serial code enables your account and entitles you to an offer of 1 month subscription... they don't go to your house and claim back the DVD do they? No, they cancel the account you created in their servers... you do not own that, you're just renting a slot in their servers based on a monthly subscription. So they are more than entitled to remove it if you're not paying for 7+ months.

My reasoning is completely accurate, you replied under the assumption that I was reffering to buying a car with cash upfront... I clearly stated installments to make the analogy to a real life loan.

If you want a game that when you buy it you buy an account that's actually yours try GuildWars...

Well on game box there is always warning that to play requires monthly subscription fee. Nowhere that in case you fail to pay next month all data is deleted. And here we come to another part of problem. All data is saved on server side. They insist on this. I do not care at this moment about reasons, fact is I can not save by any mean my data. if i purchase Mass Effect I have all data on my computer, just need to make backup.

About GW ... is something preventing them to convert it to sub?

Anyway ... we can discuss this for eternity ... but time will show if their decision was correct. One thing however I'm completely sure .... they made - imo - wrong calculation if their intention was to suck at least 1 monthly sub every 7 months and then from time to time few consecutive monthly payments. They will loose much more from people never returning back.

Because in an mmo you have no data. All the data is theirs. You bought the box. You own that. You do not own the software and you do not own your toons or your items, the game company does. And no, the box doesn't say your account/characters will be deleted. But their EULA does. Perhaps you should learn to read the things you agree to in the future.

Khm...data is theirs? So your money, equipment, ...? So i guess is nothing wrong if some beautiful day you login just to discover half (hard worked on) armor has gone, ingame gold also, ... etc. Things, eula or not, are not so simple. Besides ... there is no point in agreeing or not .... if you want to try and play ... you must agree. So I never bother reading.
