Just so other future purchasers of Turbine products can be aware.
They have decided to implement a forum rating system.
This system has been in action less than 10 hours and the poster that is following it like a lapdog praising it has already gained 4 blocks toward positive progression while the majority of the other posters you see have the original one bar given to them by default. Their own claim was that it would take "months" to get reputation up yet this poster is just moving upward the more they agree with the actions of the company.
Once they gain enough reputation, and others like them, they will be able to negatively rate other poster opinions. You are only allowed to negatively rate when your rank is high enough and your weight for negativity passed is higher when you have more "power" (adjusted by mods) or green bars.
Eventually, those rated negatively will go into a moderation bin and be refused posting rights until moderation occurs, and possible eventual banning per the FAQ. They cannot reverse this factor as there is no way to earn points without support from someone.
This leads to the controversial posters being pushed out of sight and mind until they leave as administrators are already rating their favorites highly and not even acknowledging those with legitimate concerns watching it all come to fruition in their faces. What is their recourse other than to leave a corrupt system?
Here someone sums up what is going on as others try to explain the flaws in the system.
"Well says I have 31 rep yet I have no idea where it came from. Yet some people are already almost to 1500 not even 24 hrs later. Funny these same people are the ones all through this thread that support the system. Then it degrades a serious conversation into talking about mac and cheese. Nice slap in the face to everyone concerned about this system that even the forum mods who are supposedly "policing" this system think our concerns are such a joke that its laughable. What the heck does bacon have to do with rep feedback? How can we trust the people to police the system when they think its a huge joke to begin with? Ya I think I am finally done with these forums."
If you don't believe it's going on - this is the thread to read to see. That particular post is in the 30th page or so. You can skim a few pages ahead of that to see that the admins are not responding to anything that isn't kissing their arse.

The administrators are cracking jokes with the forum posters that they are ranking up to administrate the forum for them because they are suckups. I am sorry to say that I am unhappy I ever purchased a product from this company. It is openly mocking it's customer sand not taking them seriously. As a lifetime sub I can't really cancel - no point either way but I would like the world to know that the Turbine that you may think is one thing... is this thing that you can see displayed.
Happy gaming, I will not be suggesting LOTRO to anyone in the future.

Well lotro wont do anything outside the box (not that I dont enjoy the game)...so this kind of gives them an excuse to ignore player concerns, while "giving the community control" at the same time.
I play all ghame
thats pretty bad, there is no way anything good could come from this. honestly sounds more like forum pvp..lol wich is odd considering its the forum of a game with no real pvp in it..lol
Im just waiting on AC3.
This has been the case with DDO forums for a long time and it hasn't caused any issues, the sky is not falling.
It sounds like a good idea in my opinion.

I have the solution. Either don't post on their forums or don't pay them to play their game.
Damn, that seems too easy, what am I missing here?

haha I think this is the most stupid topic I have ever seen on this forum.
This kind of rep-system have been on the DDO forum for a long time without any big problems.
A rep system on this forum wouldnt be a bad idea
If WoW = The Beatles
and WAR = Led Zeppelin
Then LotrO = Pink Floyd
That was also discussed in the thread since they said it was derived from existing code there. There was a post naming at least 30 times that posters were convinced the admins were negatively rating them on DDO. The majority of the posts were closed by the administrators... Citing such reasons as receiving negative reputation when the post was deleted which means that other posters had no access to it except administrators. I believe it was considered a N/A response on the forum meaning the thread was not applicable to visit but the rep was applied.
For what reason should one person already be surpassing all others in rep so far to have four bars when the other posters around them have nothing near that and this was supposed to take months. Clearly they are being given rep from a large "power" ie: the forum admins. They have embraced the system and will do as told in the future
Sometimes people don't like to do things that are easy. They create issues and road blocks so that they will have something to apply themselves to.
Personally I don't see what the big deal is. The gentleman up top who indicted that this was how the DDO forums have been says that no one will die (in so many words) so I am inclined to believe that "no one will die".

So true. Hopefully this is the kind of system they hinted at implementing this year on mmorpg.com.
The block feature helps a lot, but some of these blocked users might be more constructive with social repercussions. Which means more worthwhile feedback for everyone.
Win/Win ?

It's an issue of feedback. Do they want you to say what makes them happy to hear or what they should hear if it could improve the game? That's the rock and hard place about posting in a system where fanboi peers can rate you and the administrators will back them up because they put them in that place. Noone asked for this change before they took our money and it was never part of the original agreement so discussing it instead of running away when it gets hard is natural. They are changing the rules after they have their cash and that is where they instigate the reactions.
What are the little stars underneath people's name here? These stars seems to wax and wane and don't seem to parallel the number of posts people have... I thought that this was some kind of rep system.
Pick your words wisely.
Constructive feedback will not be seen negatively by the administrators or "fanboi's".
Like:
"I do not like the lack of options for adventure packs to meet X needs."
as opposed to
"This game sucks, it doesn't even offer X as an adventure pack. How could you play this crap?"

Unless you are being sarcastic. The stars here just indicate frequency of posting for a recent time period.
Turbine has always moderated the LOTRO forums heavily.
The EQ2 forums are moderated heavily as well.
The WoW general forums are a free speech haven in comparison.

As far as I can tell the stars are a reflection of how often you post. Mine goes down some if I go a week without posting much.
Also having a post reported and acted on by a moderator I believe knocks it down. But overall it seems to just be how often you post without being moderated and that is it. Maybe I'm wrong.
I think the only people afraid of a police each other rep system, are the same people who flame other users and say everything sucks or is wrong. They are the same people who get moderated by and admin for swearing or attacking and truly don't get why they are being moderated.
If you post without attacking/flaming/cursing I doubt you will ever even notice the system. But some people don't have that capability they just have to attack other posters or developers.
I didn't have time to read it all but with Turbine involved I'm sure it's bound to be bad news. My only wish as far as MMOs go would be for another company to give the Lord of the Rings IP another shot....
"I play Tera for the gameplay"
The money you pay only goes to having access to the game world. So they didn't take anything and then change the rules, the forums are just a nicety that is added for players to have an avenue of discussing things in a place the developers can read it.
You could always switch to AC, that's the one I play and it still doesn't have the new forum rep system. But perhaps it is next in line.
Trust is a big deal with me. They lost so many points on this that if that is ran by them I wouldn't go near it. There are plenty of games out there would gladly take my money I'm sure.

oh... makes sense. thanks for the explanation.
I'm not sure why having a system that punishes idiots is a bad thing.
Sounds like Allakhazam's forum-rating system, which I loved.
Encouraged good posting and made troll threads obvious (and removed them once enough negative votes accumulated.) Required a little policing (to avoid ratings circle-jerking) but was a fantastic system.

I see nothing wrong with the system. In fact, I think it will cut down on the troll posts that serve no purpose. Since it is already in use on the DDO boards, and seems they don't have too many issues with it, why not issue the same system on the LotRO boards.
