PotBS crashed and burned for many reasons, and there are quite a few similarities between it and, from what I'm reading and sifting through the hype on about STO, there seem to be some sad similarities. But one thing that Cryptic has done horrifically, it seems, is knowingly and purposely planning to launch a game without mmo/mmorpg game-play content. So I'll come full circle on that in a moment.
This does not seem to be a star trek game, sadly. I doubt its even an mmorpg, as stated in their faq. Content is king in either an mmo or mmorpg, and for this game to be relatively void of content, by plan, other than the re-dressed quests that I've read about, and which are potential clones of each other, I dont think that remotely passes for content. PotBS had as much or as little content, depending on how you look at it.
From all the readings about this title, it really seems that this game will play like a single-player lobby game, but the catch is you have to pay $15/month to play it; way to over-priced for an asteroids-type space shooter. But then again, you had to pay about the same for PotBS and its heavily instanced linear ship shooter.
So, Speaking of no content, the other major faction of the game doesnt get any pve content.
STO Manual:
"Klingons are a proud warrior race, and their game play style reflects that. Klingon game play in Star Trek Online is heavily focused on player vs. player content, and players interested in playing a Klingon Character will need to participate in PvP in order to advance."
Huh? So this is the excuse for not completeing content for the game? Spinning as though its a good thing to have to wait in a queue, we assume is exactly like champions online, to get ported into an arena, a cage-match? Is that content? Well, PotBS had a very similar, almost exact way of handling PvP by porting you into an arena at sea. Though to their credit, they had, perhaps,a little more PvE content.
Its bad enough that your game-play on the federation side is probably frought with performing the same quest but with different copy-writing to the quest text. . .on the klingon side there is absolutely no pve content. My lord, man.
Lets not talk about that they, Cryptic, wrote about how each specialty (Engineer, Tactical, Science Officer) doesnt seem to get many powers at all that really differentiates one specialy from the other, but now I'dbe concerned whether there are enough diverse powers that end up actually differentiating one player from another.
Ohh...and not to mention, what hasnt been praised, so I assume that nothing is there for any type of community-driven economy, crafting, resource gathering, merchandising, etc.
An asteroids space-shooter that is perhaps like PotBS all over again, but potentially worse?

well i bought the $5 pre order so tomorrow the 12th ill see what the deal is on this game. whether i like it or not is yet to be determined. going off hyperbole, what ifs, maybes and could be's does nothing for the arguement on whether its like another game or not. $5 is a small price to pay to get to test a game for $15+ days to see if its good enough to drop $15 a month on it or not. we will soon see wont we .

This isn't Star Wars: Galaxies Pre-CU with a Star Trek skin. If that's what you were hoping for, too bad. This ain't it.
It's also not EVE Online with ambulation (and a Star Trek skin), World of Warcraft (with a Star Trek skin), Ultima Online (with a Star Trek skin), Dark Age of Camelot (with a Star Trek skin), Asheron's Call (with a Star Trek skin), or EverQuest (with a Star Trek skin).
Again, if that's what you were hoping for, too bad. This ain't it.
Are there similarities to Pirates of the Burning Sea? Without a doubt. But there's just as many significant differences.
Will it please everyone? Not a chance. Particularly those with pie-in-the-sky expectations, and/or are too stubborn to concede they're burned out on the MMO genre in general.
honestly the only thing the same about potbs and sto is the fact that you are the captain of a ship and you can play as the ship and on away missions off the ship. thats where the sameness ends, potbs ships were broadsiders and only mounted one gun type with a few ammo options. sto doesnt use ammo, energy weapons with recharges instead. also sto weapons come in many flavors, wide arc beams for downing shields but sad dmg vs hull and lots of power drain if you mount too many, torpedoes that excell at hull dmg suck vs shields and dont drain power really at all, smaller firing forward arc dual beams that eat shields even better but like i said forward restricted, cannons that kick everythings ass close up but have a tiney forward window of fire. aand all these weapons come in various types from fed standards to klingon disruptor types, and romulan plasma weapons which cause damage over time when they ignite plasma fires all over your ship that have to be dealt with by your crew! ground combat is mostly ranged with lots of strategic possibilities via engineers setting up turrets and mine fields, science guys setting up traps and being able to heal effectively on others and tacticle guys making good dps/snipers.
honestly i tried to like potbs, i just couldnt, the game just wasnt fun. sto on the other hand has made me lose sleep to play in the beta windows of closed and ill be enjoying it in open and will have a collectors edition full account. its a fun game and i just flat out like it.
Your acceptance of such a limited implementation of the IP suggests that you are the one burned out and lacking in hope.
I haven't lost hope for a good MMO.

this might be a nice change in pace from the current crop of mmos latly

The last line of this I coulden't agree with more. I myself am guilty of this and I have a suspicion many other's around here are to.
An almost infinite amount. Trek was rarely about blowing up lots of bad guys. You obviously don't know the IP at all.

I am not burned out on MMOs, just tired of SP games being passed off as MMOs. What was the last MMO that truly called for player interaction as a design feature, aside from simply combining combat power to bring down a boss? Among many failings, STO seems to be following this same design philosophy.
The genre is being dumbed-down to accommodate the masses. This makes gameplay repetitive and boring.
I think niche games will eventually emerge which require thought, but they will now always be the minority - just as intelligent movies are.

This adolescently simplistic view of Star Trek is so incredibly sad on many level. If I had any doubts about this game or who Cryptic's audience was - Not any more.

that. so they made an sto mmo and they didnt think u n need a bridge? or to able to play klingons? like wth? pass that shit your smoking while we at it.

Prior to JJ Abrams sexing it up for everyone who gave you wedgies and stole your lunch money in grade school, Star Trek hasn't had a hit in over twenty years. Enterprise was cancelled. Nemesis was a flop. And the previous developer fortunate enough to invest in this license? They went bankrupt.
Yet despite this—without the backing of a moneybags publisher like Electronic Arts or Sony, in the middle of a global economy that's been likened to the Great Depression—a little independent studio named Cryptic rolled the dice. And in a mere eighteen months, they've produced more tangible results than their predecessor could accomplish in over four years.
And you're shitting all over it because it might not live up to every petulant nerd's most elaborate wet dreams?
Guess you'd be happier watching 30 year-old re-runs on Spike TV, huh?

Nemesis was a 'flop', not suprisingly as it went up against Harry Potter, but even as a 'flop', they broke even. 60 mill costs with box office takings of 67 mill. On top of that DVD sales and merchandising they didn't flop.
However I will conceed that Enterprise was canceled, but what do you expect? They (as always) try to take a smash hit formula and change it. Star Trek the original was a MASSIVE hit, but they decided to take it and change it because it wasn't nitty gritty enough for them. They didn't understand that the original was a hit because of it's design. People didn't want it changed, and they are still making the same mistakes today.

Wow you addressed none of his points. Well done. Reread his post and try again.

Hit the nail on the head there!
Even Wow has made things easier with all their dungeons being tank and spank, no more CC, making for 3 classes, Tank, healer and dps.
its cryptic. I wasnt expecting much. it resembles more of city of heroes than anything. i dont know about the rest of you, but i enjoy the game.
Funny you mentioned this OP, because it is exactly what I was thinking. I tried to tell them when I did the beta test for POtBS that it would fail because it was slow/linear and I will say it for this one as well.
Ship combat is completely boring and the "away" team quests are not much better.
Unfortunately, I was hoping for something more for one of my all time favorite themes (nostalgic as I used to watch Star Trek every day at 4pm...the REAL Star Trek, back when they only had 4-6 channels).
Fortunately, I will not buy into all the hype (like I did with Champions Online) and waste another $40-50...
Cyptic seems to get one thing very right though; character creation is a blast.
It's not a watse of the IP at all. It's the only way the IP fit's inside a mmo wrapper. The IP is still available for the ST/2nd Life game that you're thinking of.
Have you played STO yet? No? oh, ok.. so you have no idea how much fun the game actually is?
The space combat is incredible. The ground combat is polished enough, but not as fun as the space combat, it's still fun though. Character Progression is awesome, with the ability to get promoted and to promote your own crew. Character and Ship Appearance Customization are top notch.
I was concerned about the whole Klingon ordeal as well. But after spending 1 minute in the game, I completely forgot about it. Klingon what? I'm gonna stick with Starfleet, because I'm having that much fun playing through the content.
The biggest problems I have found are some graphical errors here and there, some performance issues in ground combat at max settings (max settings and space combat work fine), and a few server crashes. ALL of this is to be expected of a closed beta.
As far as this game being single-player... enter some of the mission zones where you get automatically grouped with other players (or enter combat with some of the enemy nodes in sector space), and you will be eating your words.. this game has MMO written all over it. is it a persistent seamless world? NO. it's what Cryptic would do with integrating space and ground combat in an MMO.
I pre-ordered the collector's edition after playing on Saturday, because I am having that much fun.

I do not accept this, simply because we have seen all the essential lacking elements in other MMOs. It can be done. Cryptic simply took the quick and easy route.
