Probably everyone here has been stung by an mmo that 'claims' to be the best, one that drums up hysterical hype and gets people into the "must buy" mentality - only to be stung, yet again.
So forums like this where people report on their beta experiences or live experiences can be for-warned.
Personally I've saved myself from being 'duped' on several MMO releases recently, CO was the last one, ST:O will be the latest. I can save my 'recession saved' money and put it into current, working MMO's and sit back as the floods of upset customers causes the industry to realise yet again, another MMO has failed.
SWG's space combat is actually pretty good, unfortunately it's the only good thing remaining in SWG (and not worth subscribing even if you love JTL), they f'd up the main game so far that even with its mild recovery it isn't the same. STO's space combat is OK, it's better than the ground game IMO, ship control is easy since I binded the movement to my arrow keys since they're directly under the home/end keys which are the throttle keys, my keypad is binded to each of the actionbar buttons since I'm left-handed.
Ground game just feels "clunky" and sluggish for some reason, it's something I find pretty common in newer MMO games these days, Tabula Rasa's gameplay felt just right but I'm so used to City of Heroes' type gameplay (lock target and queue attacks). I like Star Trek, but not as much as I like Star Wars.
We'll see how Cryptic holds up for the following year after release, CO slid down pretty fast, at least Aion is still in the top 10 on Xfire after the same amount of time CO has been out and CO is getting close to #200.
In my opinion the OP is completely incorrect and missleading. love the game, it's incredibly entertaining and playable. Is it without flaws? Nope. But the framework and core of the game is great and I see a spectacular future for it.

After reading your opening line, I skipped the rest until I found the "quote" button.

Te framework and core of the game is what makes this game only a poor game not an mmo..
I find this game poor in all aspects, rushed, made simple and fast to get fast box sales and money, its really boring in any combat ground is worse...i mean cryptic could do 100x better..any indy company could do it 100x better...

We should separate what we expected from whether it is a good game or not. These are two different things.
- expectations -- I expected a LOT more from a Star Trek MMORPG. I like living worlds that I can play in, the RPG part is the most important to me. In that regard, this is a massive failure. (my opinion)
- but is it a good game? -- I heard a lot of the same complaints about CoH: shallow, repetitive, simplistic, etc. I loved that game! It was just fun to go out and blast away, and I suspect STO has that fun factor too (Cryptic does that part well).
So, is it a good game, independently of whether it fits your expectations?
I like when people say Cryptic nailed the space combat b/c it's "like the show"... that doesn't make it fun. Being "like the show" would be great if there was diplomacy, exploration and TRUE factions (not that Moster Player vs. Player Klingon bullshit cop-out) "like the show".
I played 12 hours in the game. It was all I need to know I wasn't interested in a cheap Fish Tank Simulater - Slow, repetitive, small instances where only a handful of players will "fit".
Oh, and any company that gives people an exclusive race for Lifetime subs BEFORE a game launches, and then charges microtransactions ONTOP of a subscription, can get bent. But, don't take the "haters" word for it, check out the droves and droves of subscribers to Cryptic's other cheap rush job... oh wait, it failed too.

if i wanted everything like the show i would stick to the show. Games are supposed to be fun. Not everyone wants to play a slow and tedious battle simulator.
STO is nothing but a cheap game done in hurry to get the bucks out from people that feels the need to play in a Star Trek world, from here i will never again put any hype on a Cryptic release.
I could pick your post apart line by line if i could be bothered, not one point is really accurate, theres a lot of crap and assumptions in there and it's obvious you have hardly played the beta and certainly have not read the development threads and upcoming patch notes, but fundimentally this is all you needed to post.
I doubt anyone would argue with this sentence, I wouldn't.
Expresso gave me a Hearthstone beta key.....I'm so happy
I see no reason to criticize the OP just because he has a negative opinion of the game. Sorry but alot of people do not drink the Cryptic kool-aid and wear rose-colored glasses to form an opinion on mmos these days. Some people tell it like it is and others can't stand the truth.
The milk has been spilled for a long time,...yet people are still crying about it? This never ends. The sad thing is, if the game was designed just like how the current haters want,..then I'm willing to bet the current fanboys would switch roles and would become the haters instead. Most of what you said is true with the exception of what I underlined. If this game was designed to be"Star Trek Simulator" "Star Trek: Second Life" or "Star Trek : SWG Revisited" I wouldn't spend months trashing it. I'd just move on to another game. I certainly wouldn't BETA test a game that I know I wouldn't like.
In my opinion these kind of posts should be all over the Internet, for everyone to see. Of course theres always clowns like Timzilla, but thats just one rotten apple.
Cryptic is one cheap company, that should be exposed to all people that haven't seen its true face yet. There's just no point in walking away without speaking your mind first, you don't help anyone with that. What about all those folks that are going to buy this game without having this knowledge? What a waste..
Crash and Burn Cryptic - and never ever make people believe you're making game worth playing again.

Meh when I was much younger and still new to MMO's I may have agreed with you, now days not so much.
Most gamers think Alganon is crud, if it was changed to suite the "haters" it might actually be a success. But for now it's tanking.
Most gamers think CO isn't that good, if it was changed to suite the "haters" it might actually be a success. But for now it's tanking.
Nothing unique about either situation, both games are just poorly done for there own reasons. Even the fans of both games hope and pray for improvements lol. Trying to suite the haters would likely even make the current fans happy in both games.
Do you think fans of SWG would suddenly hate the game and leave if SOE decided to appease the haters and undo all that was done by NGE? I don't I think they would see business booming.
What about AoC and War? How about VG?
Would those looking forward to MO suddenly stop looking forward to the game if the "haters" got there way and the launch was delayed?
Bottom line is, sure every game has it's haters but when those that enjoy the game are a fraction of those that hate it and even a good portion of those they are at least somewhat enjoying the game are hoping and asking for the same fixes and changes mostly what then?
Yes, there is a vocal minority that should be ignored with every game but passing everything off as some complaint from the vocal minority is just a cop out.
Every game is designed to appeal to a certain demographic, when the majority of those that fall into that demographic do not like what you've done with the product you have simply failed to do what you've set out to do. You've missed the target audience.
Andromedan have you ever heard about 'different people like different things'? thats the most basic thing any person need to learn even before they touch the keyboard to write all this nonsense. And please stop making new accounts to recycle same nonsense.L
This isn't a matter of liking different things, its about what kind of product Cryptic is feeding people.
I have never made a new account, I don't know what you're on about. I don't post much simply because I don't see a reason to. I play games, and if I don't like them I quit and play another. However in this case, something is really wrong, and people should know.
The fact you are trying to teach me manners says enough about you.

Ofcourse its about liking different things. For you STO is bad for others its not. You are shocked that someone might actually enjoy something you hate. Well thats life buddy. Thousands of players are having fun so they obviously can't tell you in person. So if you are telling me you can somehow convince all these players, that they should not enjoy the game they will look at you as if you are crazy.
I didn't like Avatar but i didn't go telling the whole world that you shouldn't watch it. Its all about personal taste. As far as manners are concerned when you understand that life is all about diversity come back and talk to me again.
From my experience in Open Beta, I would say that the OP was largely correct on the details of what he posted. However, I wouldn't really call it a failed game..... and I've certainly been described as a "hater" here.
In my opinion, it's definately a SHALLOW game though. Even the fan-boi's I don't think can argue that it wasn't built quickly...that's pretty much an objective fact....it had a 2 year production cycle....4-5 is standard for AAA MMO's these days. It's also quite evident that cutting production costs was a Prime Directive (pun intended)..... as you can see that reading between the lines of many of the design decisions.
Even still....I think to describe it as a "failure" is a bit harsh. I think Cryptic largely succeded in making the type of game they intended. The thing you've got to understand is that the type of game they intended to make is the MMO equivalent of an Egg McMuffin..... it's not bad for what it is.... can even be enjoyed to some degree if you are in the mood for such a thing....but it is still an Egg McMuffin it is NOT a Lobster dinner..... if you go in expecting that you will be SEVERELY disapointed... and don't let any fanboi or marketing droid try to spin you into thinking that it is anything other then what it is.
Personaly, I gave it a 5 out of 10 or a C- rating. There are actualy some fun aspects....and I'll even say that it has a couple things it does well. For me though, I just can't see that it has sufficient entertainment value or longevity to warrent a full purchase price or a monthly sub. It's NOT in the same league with a LOTRO or Fallen Earth or DAOC or likely what TOR will be. But don't take my word for it....scrounge up a free Open Beta key...I think there are still a few around and judge for yourself.
The one thing I would strongly reccomend though....if you purchase a long-term sub to this game sight unseen...you only have yourself to blame.....don't say there weren't plenty of posts warning otherwise.

I have no experience with most of the games you mentioned but SWG was the first MMORPG that I played from 2004-2006. It's interesting you bring up the NGE when the truth is it was brought around to "appease" the people who hated the game EG: Jedi as a starter profession, no more item decay, faster paced combat, no more standing in lines etc..
If you tried appeasing the haters of STO an NGE is exactly what you would get and it would piss off the people that already like the game.So respectfully I say thanks but no thanks.

I suppose one could argue that the NGE was implemented to appease those complaining about Jedi and item decay etc. etc. but in reality the NGE was designed and implemented to try and make the game easier for the 'casual' player and to satisfy Lucas Arts. Unfortunately SOE and LA did what a lot of companies do and took the feedback they were getting on the forums and said, "meh, this is just a very vocal MINORITY of our population, surely the majority that don't post here will enjoy the changes." I've seen this same idiotic mentality from gaming companies repeated over and over again. Sadly in the case of SWG the feedback they were getting on the forums was right in line with what the majority of players were feeling and it bit them in the ass. Until a company gets serious about getting feedback from their customers in game rather than forums I think this is just going to continue to happen. /shrug

lol as another poster said they waved off what the community said in regards to this as being just the vocal minority. The backlash on this was so huge MMORPG.com added a special forum for the ranting and raving SWG fans.
If you tried to appease the STO community and put this game back in the oven to cook some more and added content and through in a bit of diversity in the content as people are asking who would that exactly piss off? If your going to make the claim then please explain lol. If you gave players more than 3 slots who would that tick off? I mean seriously let me know why you would think this would upset anyone. All around it would be a good thing for all players fans and haters alike . But you seem to think otherwise....
And SWG's NGE is an incident that speaks for itself theres no need for me to explain it to you. I will help you out a little though so you can understand how well the community took to the whole NGE thing. Look up Jeff Freeman, that should give you all you need to understand just how much the SWG community appreciated NGE.
Here I will help you out with a link to one article if you wish.
I will even give you a little quote from Mr. Freeman who if you by chance still don't know after the above was a developer on SWG's and singled out as the master mind behind NGE.
Because I spent almost six years working on SWG, and it kills me that the only people who liked it, hate me. Frequently for misinformed reasons.

STO will imho fail. There is no sandbox features. No economy, no crafting, no social tool. Almost irrelevant guild tools, no freedom..
It reminds me start of a WHO. shiny empty shell.
All complexity of STO would go into a single career of singer and musician of SWG.
STO should have been sandbox by all means, not a themepark crap

I see no reason to criticize the OP just because he has a negative opinion of the game. Sorry but alot of people do not drink the Cryptic kool-aid and wear rose-colored glasses to form an opinion on mmos these days. Some people tell it like it is and others can't stand the truth.
