It's not $70. In USD, the download only was $50.16 for me. Typical for a game. If you want the box and loot bag and all those other extra goodies, sure you will pay more, much like the collectors editions of other such games. Not really a big deal.
I don't think it will have that bad of a launch. A lot of people already know what to expect when they buy it because Starvault has been very straightforward, unlike DF which had a horrible launch and used false information about the content in their game on their site for weeks after release. At this stage of the game, Starvault > Aventurine.
Darkfall had everything when it was released, I don't know what you are on about.
Since day one you could do everything in DF from crafting to sieging.
The only thing that didn't work well at launch were few big bugs which allowed people to exploit the game for weeks before AV fixed it.
Not many but huge ones.
The state MO is in now is nowhere near close to what DF was at release.
If it was I would have bought it, since I plan to buy MO when is ready (or almost ready), but at the moment I am not as confident in MO as I was with DF when I bought the game.
Darkfall had what at release?
A barely functioning town creation system, which lets you create useless buildings that you can't even enter. A broken siege system (there were bugs that let a player destroy buildings easily with swords). Game breaking speedhacks. Game breaking bugs that allowed people to skill up at obscene rates. An empty world with very scarce mob spawns. A totally broken economy because there's nowhere safe in the world to trade. A broken crafting system for the solo player (you need a guild to supply you with materials). Very little "fun" quest content, unless you count kill and collection quests.
Honestly, anyone who props up Darkfall as having a good release has rose coloured goggles on. It had a TON of problems and I was in the beta. Those problems were not resolved upon release.
If Darkfall can survive it's rocky release, so can MO.

Exactly junzo. In fact I know I paid over $63 USD for the download only for Darkfall last year. I paid exactly $50.16 USD for Mortal Online. I don't see the big deal here with the price. I think people just want to play for free, but UNLIKE Tasos with Darkfall the devs with MO never promised free game time before spending money. I know for a fact that Tasos had promised that everyone that wanted to try DF would get to before spending a dime. - One of the countless LIES made by Tasos and company. All the DF fans constantly want to compare Darkfall to Mortal Online. Well then let's compare all the promises made by Tasos before the launch of DF then shall we? - Do you DF supporters REALLY want to go "there"? Heh.

Ok, 50 dollars, its the industry standard for a new game, whatever. I think capitalism needs to hit this industry in the ass, and it needs to hit it hard. Until then, unfinished products will continue to be thrown out.
If you stand VERY still, and close your eyes, after a minute you can actually FEEL the universe revolving around PvP.

"Crappy company" or not, they have to charge what they're charging to survive. You cannot run an MMO like MO on $5 a month subscription fees.

When I'm deciding on a game, I go to the games website and look at the FAQ of the game. You can gloss over it however you like, AV was very misleading about features at launch. All the features of the game were not in at launch, unless you count AFK macro'ing. As stated above, city walls, weather and gates were not in at launch. The AI was horribly exploited. It was an empty world with very few spawn points for mobs, the sounds were horrible, many of the ships were not in at launch. You get the idea. I'm just saying, at least Starvault is keeping everyone "in the loop" about the game.

There was insane rubberbanding at Darkfalls launch, as well as constant server crashes (like, several every day) for a week or so. Furthermore, the siege system was described as "broken" for some time (funny, they had the walls but no gates to close... enemies just walked right in, unless they crouched under the walls) and bugged mobs, as well as a weird skill-gain system, enabled some people to get a real "headstart."
The list of features on their homepage was very impressive to say the least... and it was all over the homepage too. The only place where you could see that a chunk of them wasnt in game would be in the dev jounal, if you had the patience to sift through a couple of dozen pages or so.
Seriously, they didnt brag about their "mighty-pew-pew-lazor-towers-of-doom" anywhere, and they didnt state that roaming mobs wasnt in game, or that mob-built settlements was another one of Tasos fantasy features.
Darkfall had an amazingly messy development and launch, you would be delusional to think otherwise... or maybe you werent there.
if they are charging 70 bucks for their game, you better expect the game to be measured up by AAA standards. Dont want us judgind the game by those standards? Sell it at 20 dollars and charge 5$ a month instead of 15$. Im sick and tired of crappy companies charging top money for sub par products.
I tend to think the same. Though I find myself wondering if not having to pay for expansions mitigates that or not. I suppose its the rate at which they deliver new content that really makes the difference. I most certainly didn't feel cheated paying for Eve as I felt they released quality content at a reasonable rate. Granted content in a sandbox type game is not the same as content in a themepark type game.
MMOss are difficult and expensive to make, even the bigger devs struggle (Mythic, Cryptic, Funcom) so I don't really expect these tiny teams with no money to be judged by the same standards! If they were trying to be AAA then sure, lambast them, but they aren't. They are a small team aiming for a niche market. If it is your thing then you will tolerate the rough edges (people still play games like Darkfall, same thing) It will be enjoyable to some, but it is definitely not polished enough to be a mainstream release so on that count you are right. It will still appeal to some though
If they are charging me the same money then why should I NOT judge it with the same standard as other MMORPGs? I mean if you are selling a Wolksvagen then dont charge the same price as BMW and then expect people not to feel cheated.
I completely agree with the OP. This is not a game ready for release or worth the price they are charging for it. Possibly it could be a F2P game but even that is pushing it.

It is not about glossing over, the whole DF community knows that Aventurine are lazy fuckers, this is their biggest fault.
We keep complaining with them even now after a year for not giving us enough info of what they are doing, the patch notes comes always after patch, and that's good because they didn't gave us any at all the first few months after release.
But the game on the other hand was perfectly playable and all the features AV advertised in the last year were in, so there were no surprise.
Not all of the features were completely bug free but for the most they were functioning ok, but which game is bug free at release?
The ships were in, although not all of them and the city building was in. Yes they missed the walls which they added 1 month later, yes they missed the gates which they added after another month.
Everything else was in without exception.
I am just wondering if all MO is missing at the moment are a couple of ships and the walls of the cities then i wiould be more than happy to buy it.
Unfortunately, from all the info I gather from, videos, dev posts and even the fanboys, MO is not anywhere near as complete as DF was at release.
When MO is ready I am one of those people who will buy the game, so stop trying to convince me that MO is better than DF was, because I am well documented about both of the games.
Before I bought DF I made sure that I got enough evidence the game was worth my money, and I am doing the same with MO.
And at the moment it is not worth my money for what I gather.
If you guys want to support Starvault by paying for an unfinished product It's ok, I am not going to criticise that, it's a noble thing to do, it's called paying for your art.
But do not try to convince other people that the game in its current state it s worth their money, because that would be deceiving them
I come from an Ultima Online background and was hoping to find something similar with MO.
MO is crap. Do not waste your money. I did and regret it.
If anyone desires a "true pvp" similar to the old Ultima Online, wait for a well respected company to make it. These type of games can't be done properly without a solid, large company. CCP is the only exception because their game consists of many cloned zones (solar systems) and basic math as a combat platform, so they had it easier.

EDIT: To all these people saying they enjoy MO and it's a great game must be so damn desperate for this type of game that they're too blind to see how poorly made this game really is.
Serious death penalties makes every close call an adrenaline rush, and every minor achievement a major victory. This alternative rule-set should be in all MMORPGs.

To this point they have provided a product. If it is good or not is for those who bought to decide. The nudity has been spoken about for a while now. Some of the rest of your points are valid but at the same time the condition of the game has been known and admitted to by the devs. I bought last night and gonna play tomorrow most likely as I didnt have a problem with the new patcher yay me. Will report back when I play.
yea i didnt have nay issues either just you had to close the patcher manually while the patch installed no biggy the speeds are finnly there the rest is minor bugs

Oh noes! A game where you actually lose loot if you die? You mean an actual "consequence" to dying?
I think that is why this game is so important to the niche market it is trying to target.
If you want to play a game where death costs you nothing, then trust me - there are TONS of other games out there like that. First comes to mind is um some little game out there called "WoW". Maybe you could check into that one?

I believe you got a big inferiority issue over Darkfall.
The guy didn't even mention DF, in fact he said the only good PvP game out there is EVE
I don't see many DF people bashing this game, yet I see lots of hate and comparison with DF, trying to make MO look better.
Many people who play DF in fact are sitting on the fences waiting for this game to turn out good, but many are not as delusional as many of you guys are.
You should drop the MO vs DF issue because at the moment MO cannot compete with DF, and you are risking to put off DF players which potentially can be future MO subscribers

You stated that all features were in at launch, then retracted and stated otherwise. There were also a multitude of bugs and hacks. DFO is a far, far cry from a game with a good launch. Many think it had a horrible launch. DFO today, is a far cry from what it was at launch. I must commend AV for turning the game around, but the launch wasn't great.

/agree 100%
Darkfall now is a complete turn around from what it was at launch.
I also bought DF at launch, and mobs AI were sloppy and you had to search for them. I spent over an hour running around without even seeing a mob when I first bought the game.
Darkfall was a total mess when it launched, and anyone who says otherwise is certainly delusional.
- I also commend AV for turning Darkfall into a game today that many, including myself doubted would ever happen. Hmmm, kinda sounds like all the doubters NOW for Mortal Online, eh?

I didn't retract anything at all.
I just acknowled what you said, which is that the walls and not all ships were implemented.
Although all the features were.
You can say that construction and ship building weren't 100% implemented, but they were there, and the only 2 features with a problem.
Everything else was implemented.
I also said that there were bugs, every game at launch has bugs.
And I also said that there were few big bugs which allowed many people to explot the game for weeks.
So i am well aware which state DF was in.
There were "few bugs" which allowed "big exploits" this is the worst tghing about DF launch.
But having said that the vast majority of the features were in and complete with some exception (like the walls and the ships you mentioned), and the game in general was 90% complete at release.
And you keep missing the point that I am not looking for a perfect game at launch, in fact I could buy MO if it was 80% completed.

i wasnt bashing DF . i was just merly saying Mo will be fine if they dont release it broken.. Darkfall had issue at release and a while after that and its doing just fine... thats all i was saying

I played Darkfall at launch as well. I wouldn't put it at 90% complete at launch. Not even close. I'd say 70% from what I played.
I agree that Darkfall was more complete however then Mortal Online is right now. That's why I hope they do not launch for at least another month or two, maybe longer.
I would say Mortal Online has about 50-60% of everything implemented right now. Once they get the bugs with wildlife and the monsters in, and if they actually have good AI like they say it will.. and if they get magic working better, then they will be up to about 80% I'd say.

It's not $70. In USD, the download only was $50.16 for me. Typical for a game. If you want the box and loot bag and all those other extra goodies, sure you will pay more, much like the collectors editions of other such games. Not really a big deal.

You cannot run an MMO like MO on $5 a month subscription fees.

when is mmos ever finished.. i rather get a working mmo than a finished 1
Lol wtf... you are going to buy MO because Fury was a decent game?
Darkfall had everything when it was released, I don't know what you are on about.
Since day one you could do everything in DF from crafting to sieging.
The only thing that didn't work well at launch were few big bugs which allowed people to exploit the game for weeks before AV fixed it.
Not many but huge ones.
The state MO is in now is nowhere near close to what DF was at release.
If it was I would have buy it, since I plan to buy MO when is ready (or almost ready), but at the moment I am as confident in MO as I was with DF when I bought the game.
There were many features not in at launch for DFO and many of the features on the website never actually made it in to the game. It was weeks after launch before the website was changed to reflect what content was actually available in game. Two off the top of my head were roaming mobs, and city walls. There were some others. The fact I'm trying to make is that Starvault is upfront with what is in-game at launch....AV wasn't.
Ohhh..................c'mon now.
You are referring to the bloody FAQs which Aventurine never changed since 2005............during the years AV took many features out of the initial design and they made that cristal clear in many official posts.
Many months before release, people who were following the game knew very well what tto expect from release.
Aventurine is never been good in comunication and they still aren't, but whoever followed the game were aware the changes AV was doing to the original vision (the famous outdated FAQs), you could read the new direction of the game in media interviews and official posts.
When DF was released, all the features advertised by the devs during the last year of development were in.
The game was fun since day one, and you could do everything without any problem whatsoever.
When MO will have all the feature working like DF had after its release, I will buy it.
I am not a MO basher at all, I am realistic and I will buy MO when is ready.............and it won't be ready this month.
My gaming blog
But do not try to convince other people that the game in its current state it s worth their money, because that would be deceiving them
I agree with the OP 100%. Nice post.

This alternative rule-set should be in all MMORPGs.
when was the last time you tired it? its improved alot. i really dislike people like you. being negative isnt going to help in anyway shape or form the game isnt poorly put together the core features are there . so keep trolling darkfall is doing fine So will Mo if they dont release it broken
At the moment this amounts to a large deathmatch map where dying can lose you days of work if you want to use the top of the line equipment
yea i didnt have nay issues either just you had to close the patcher manually while the patch installed no biggy the speeds are finnly there the rest is minor bugs

I think you guys should stop it.
You should drop the MO vs DF issue because at the moment MO cannot compete with DF, and you are risking to put off DF players which potentially can be future MO subscribers
atm the crafting and house building is more complexed than the combat. deathmatch my ***
You stated that all features were in at launch, then retracted and stated otherwise.
- Zaxx
But it isn't.

i wasnt bashing DF . i was just merly saying Mo will be fine if they dont release it broken..
