This game has made some great strides and keeps getting better and better each patch. Sure people will knock this or that, but all in all, those who find games like WoW boring and repeative, at least the concepts and gameplay in here make you think less like your playing a standard MMO and more like your playing a tactical space sim. Give it a try for a month before you just bash. You would be surprised at the changes and improvements.

first off, thanks for making a thread with a title of " Fantastic game " it's nice to know there are afew other people out there that know a good MMO when they see one. I agree, the game is fantastic , been having a blast with the game and cannot wait to get my copy of STO! and the Head start program.
I hope that those people that are bashing the game itself stay away from it and go back to whatever game they were playing, because I am getting alittle tired of the constant bashing of the game, frankly, you can tell people the bad stuff about a game, but to tell people they are stupid for buying the game and or a lifetime sub, thats not right at all, those are the people which I hope stay away from STO because the community so far in the game is amazing!
See you in the game !

Maybe you should tell us why its so fantastic then?
There are alot of posts around here staing why its not fantastic so it would be interesting to hear anything good about STO other than "ITS STAR TREK".
Being cheap, shallow, repetetive and still, more expensive than other MMOs is not looking very good.
If WoW = The Beatles
and WAR = Led Zeppelin
Then LotrO = Pink Floyd
i agree with the OP. name me an MMO that was perfect at launch or even one that had every single detail they planned to put into the game in place durring a...wait for it.....BETA lol. sure it has a lot of room to improve but i personally can't wait till friday's headstart. I think the game has plenty of room for future growth and it ain't perfect, but i enjoyed the beta and cant wait to see the additional content they add to the live version of the game.
I'm just going to ask a simple question, for I would really like to understand where you are coming from on this game and what it offers. What do you feel you are getting with the monthly fee?
Personally, I don't see it being anywhere near ANY mmorpg in terms of depth, content growth, etc. to validate paying a monthly fee of $15. Now, I may come back to the game six months to a year from now to see if that has changed, but the core gameplay is not an mmorpg. I would have been far happier to buy this game now if there was no monthly subscription, like Guild Wars.
It would help if you, OP, said what excactly is so fantastic about the game. Does it have any unique MMO traits? Varied content? Immersion?
Only thing that I can see that is borderline fantastic is the GFX, customization and to some extent the space combat. Everything else seems just cookie cutter to me.
Missions are bland. All are basically variants, or boil down to, go here and kill that.
Possibilities for exploration is slim as there arent much to actually explore since zones are tiny and the game follows a very linear path, which does not give much room for exploration.
Immersion is pretty poor as there are XX instances of each zone. Seeing instance #67 of Sol does not excactly help immersion.
Noone seem to be able to tell me what the end game is, including the devs, so I can only assume there is none (like CO).
PvP seems to only consist of battlegrounds with no bearing on any actual war which supposedly is supposed to rage between Feds and Klingons. Again just like CO.
So, I ask again, what is so fantastic about the game?
My gaming blog
I think this best sums it up for me:
Space combat: C
Pros:
- Textures and lighting effects are alright.
- The combat is somewhat entertaining
Cons:
- The ship cannot be controlled in true 3D, this system right now resembles more to a submarine game.
- There is no physics is space
- There are no collissions with objects. You ram an enemy, and all that happens that you both stop in front of eachother.
- Each system is the same, few object thrown into a colorful background, with one / zero planet. There are no solar systems, planets to visit, nothing. Elite 2 in 1993 featured hundreds of explorable solar systems with real planets, asteroid belts, etc.
- The space map (area map) is horrible, there are no mission objectives shown, sometimes you just fly for 5 minutes to find where to go.
Ground combat: D
Pros:
- Sometimes it can be fun
Cons:
- Animations are gimped
- There is no physics in the ground combat either
- There is no friendly fire, you cannot endanger your teammates
- There is no challenge in ground combat - besides when it's bugged, and the selected away team does not spawn
- Enemies shoot through walls and objects
- Some missions are totally pointless, for example: You have to run around searching for some medical equipments. After 15 minutes i realized that they are some door-like objects laying on the ground?
- Close quarter combat is horrible
- Your teammates usually stuck when you have to use turbolifts, even they are on follow
- You can dodge, jump and evade shots. Only problem is you don't have to, because even if you play like rambo, the teammates just heal you to full health / shields in matter of seconds
- Same with the kits, weapons and upgrades, they simply does not matter. I can use the stock weapons and stock shields, still can finish any mission
Interface: C
Pros:
- It's easy to use, it takes little time to get accustomed to icons, and their functions
- With the latest patch, it looks alright: functional but not ugly
- I like how you can control the shields, and the ship resources in different situations
- Mission interface (Quests) is alright
Cons:
- Sector and area map is horrible
- I'd prefer a graphical version of system list, now it's immersion is close to zero
- On galaxy map your icon always points 'north'. If you figure out which cluster and system to go, you have to change views to position yourself
- Inventory management is F---. How it is possible, that you have X number of inventory slots, but a pencil and a deflector dish is taking the same amount of space in it?
There should be a 'personal inventory' - which is almost infinite, since you store your stuff in your ship - XXV. century, transportation, hello? - and a 'ship equipment' inventory,
what is limited to those items that you upgrade your ship with. You don't want to carry a ship-size weapon system to an away mission
- How it is possible that you can even exchange full ship systems _in combat_, with a few clicks, still there is a ship management NPC in SOL base?
- How it is possible, that equipment doesn't wear off? What kind of economy will this game have after everyone is full of unneeded items?
- Selling, buying, upgrading equipment is clumsy, hard to use.
- Item descriptions are useless. Might be my personal problem, but i don't know what those stats are, i usually vote for the one with more +stats than the other.
Damar: I'd like to toss that smug little Vorta out the nearest airlock. And his Founder with him.
Gul Dukat: [laughs] Now, now, Damar, that's no way to talk about our valued allies. Not until this war is over, anyway.
A game doesn't need to be original to be good. When you speak of varied I'm guessing you're refereing to the continual quests? Well that could be said of 90% of mmo's on the market. As for immersion, when I play (thus far) I'm immersed, I don't know how to express why I just am.
Cookie cutter, as in every other mmo. You see I've read a lot of the complaints you seem to have of STO (basically every STO thread on this forum). It begins to sound like you are more tired of mmo's in general (and this goes for many people hating) rather than STO in particular.
Again the quests are similar, some are different, as in most mmo's. What are you looking for that has been done in other mmo's? What quest is it you feel is missing (that is within the IP o/c, wouldn't want to lose that immersion/ST feel).
I haven't yet been everywhere in the game as you have so I can't comment on its size, but I agree it is linear so far if you follow all of the quests.
Again immersion I guess is relative. Either way surely it's only worth mentioning once?
When you assume... tbh I don't know what the end game is either, I guess I'll find out when I get there, in no hurry.
I don't like BG PvP so I will hate on this right along with you.
And now the most relavant answer I guess, what is fantastic about this game (personally I'd go with good but meh), so far, it is fun to play. I log in and play for as long as I can and look forward to doing so as soon as I can again. Is this the most revolutionary game I've played? No, Is it even the best? No, but it is fun for me and that's enough. This may change in time but who can tell.

i also think from what i've seen that it's a very good Star trek MMO game i already perordered it and got to play it in beta..so i'm looking forword to playing the finished game when it comes out...
I think it is a great game because of the auto join feature for grouping. This should save time when doing quests that require a fleet to finish and promote grouping and social interaction. I like this approach better than the WoW approach of adding thousands of solo quests, which helps players to level, but can socially isolate them at later levels.
I also think it is a great game because it is very easy for me to get immersed in the game. I liked SWG, but I had a hard time with immersion in that game. I think this is important when releasing games using an IP with a huge fan base.
I think it is a great game because regardless of how well the game does, I finally get to play a Star Trek based MMORPG.
I also think it will be an even greater game because the devs have been very responsive during beta and quick to release fixes and make changes based on player feedback. I can name several games where this was and in some cases still is not the case. These are my opinions based on my experiences in beta.
I really have not had this much fun with a game in a long time.
Quite simple for me, it's fun to play. I see no reason to justify this to anyone, others who enjoy the game will play and have fun as well, while the trolls have fun bashing the game on any forum/blog/media they can find to anyone who will listen.
Everyone wins
Expresso gave me a Hearthstone beta key.....I'm so happy
Yes it has potential to become a good game and because of that I'll be on the look out for the Free Trial Offers down the road to check on it and see if it's $ worthy yet.
SWG (pre-cu) - AoC (pre-f2p) - PotBS (pre-boarder) - DDO - LotRO (pre-f2p) - STO (pre-f2p) - GnH (beta tester) - SWTOR - Neverwinter
glad you like it , but it is way to much of a button masher for me, good for carpal tunnel,, and it took me 30 min to get into a PvP arena which is absurd, long loading times , it needs alot of improvement hopefully about 5 years down the road
<sniff> <sniff> <sniff> I smell something in the form of a friend or family of a cryptic employee.. do you? Nice PR stunt
No I don't actually, I find his post to be of a personal nature, as in he enjoys the game. I also agree with him in the statement it's something different, it needs more work , but it's different. That's something this genre needs badly.
Why is it that when someone decides they don't like a game, everyone who disagrees or posts something contradictory to their opinion. That person is automatically a shill or employee of that company? Couldn't find anything constructive to argue against his points with?

The ground combat needs work and they need larger zones with more ppl in them and more content but all that happens in time.
The "I WANT IT NOW AND IF I DON'T GET IT I'M GOING TO BITCH LIKE A LITTLE GIRL" crowd is getting old, the world does not evolve around you and no matter how rich you are or how powerful you become this won't change. Get over yourself and grow a pair, its chump change 50$ and 15$ a month......go get a facking job.

It's been the norm the last few years, but it isn't the norm overall nor is it acceptable. Lots of games came out and were far more polished than this and they had far more content as well. City of Heroes, Lord of the Rings Online, World of Warcraft, and many other games, which happen to all be quite successful had far, far, far, far, far better games at launch than STO will have.
As for the cost. Well, if you don't demand a quality product for the money you spend, then that's your business. Don't yell at other people for actually having some standards.
what mmo isnt repetetive and shallow if you dont take the time to read what you are doing and how is it more expensive????? mass effect 2 on amazon cost me more ? and amazons is cheaper by 3 dollar than everyone else

Currently Playing: World of Warcraft

Other games actually start out with a lot of different places to level up and there are even a lot of things to do besides leveling up. STO doesn't have any of that and those things really help a game feel open and break the repetitiveness.

Did you read any of the quest? Their is your depth( i would have like voices too) but i can read so meh. Content growth umm game not released growth too come, they already said 2 more factions to come + klingon pve content 30-45 days away. Validation made. Core hum how to reply???? Agreed in some aspects its not ( too instanced for my taste)(will require team play later on in pve). Can probably solo the game, where is the fun in that. Game could use voice function like Global Agenda, so that you talk to people you instance with randomly, that is of course if you didnt turn that off so as not to be bothered when doing pve.

I would disagree on that statement and say thats your opinion instead. In you opinion many other games were far, far, far, far better games at release than STO. Of course what one person thinks is better doesn't apply to many others at all. Argueing about the degree of polish from a start up MMo is hardly relevent as they all lack a certain degree of polish. I think many MMo fans have become tainted in their expectations of the MMo gender in general and expect a MMo to release fully developed, bug free, meet all their expectations, desires etc. Hasn't ever happened yet and I highly doubt it will ever happen. Argueing over the degree of polish is just being petty.

It's the other side of the coin from .... "You think this game is horrible, therefore you MUST be a troll".
My reaction to his post was more along the lines of... "I gotta find out what sort of meds he's taking....they sound like fun!"
The excuses of... ITS BETA... or ...name me an MMO blablabla ... getting so tiresome.
Critics (not trolls, but critics) have given plenty reasons, arguments, examples, etc about why they think STO is a first class rip off and what is wrong with the game.
Yet the people that say it's a great and awesome game have up till today given ZERO reasons or examples what's they think is so great about it?
This is not a troll. I am all ears to hear from people who like the game, what is so fantastic about it, what they exactly like, etc.
Maybe me or other critics have missed or overlooked some stuff. Who knows.
So lets hear it?? Give us some arguments, reasons, examples. Anything.
Cheers
I don't even really like the game as a whole, but there were things I "liked" about it, I've seen them stated time and time again maybe you missed it.
First and foremost I like the ship combat and tactics requiring constant attention (shields, facing etc..) This was a very well done aspect of STO I must say, I also like the grouping system when entering missions, more games should add something like this IMO. The skill building was (seemingly) well thought out, aside form the final decision to nerf skill points. Character customization was stellar as always for a Cryptic title.
I liked sector space for the feeling of nostalgia it gave, reminded me of old-school games (liked potbs for the same reason), which I love. I like the idea of social hubs like Earth space-dock, and the idea everything you need is in one spot. Convenience is always a good thing in my opinion, as game time is always better spent actually playing rather than searching.
I like their idea for adding unknown species to the game world, nice star trek feel there. I really enjoyed the tutorial from start to finish it had a well done flow to it. Easing you into the experience while giving you the feeling you were accomplishing something epic. I wish the rest of the missions I did had the same flow void of overly long (tedious) fights that broke up the that flow after being subjected to it one to many times. I don't call that a challenge I call it a hindrance, a challenge would mean there was a penalty IMO.
All in all the game itself wasn't bad I had fun enough while playing, it was the idea that there was nothing but what I experienced already to see and do, decided then and there I would wait and see what happens down the road.
I just find it funny, people are saying no one has stated reasons they liked the game, these things have been echoed time and time again. I don't want to call anyone out for selective reading or anything, but saying only those who were unhappy are explaining themselves is ridiculous.

STO has many flaws. But it surely is worth giving a try. I don't see it as fantastic, but neither as totally bad. I think it is fun for a while, same as I see CO.

Personaly, I thought their quest writing was a very weak point. Not that they didn't TRY in that regards...I can see that they did...but thier writers just don't seem very talented. Compared to another MMO built off of a popular IP ... LOTRO.... where the quest writing absolutely rocks. It felt more like I was playing the cartoon show version of Star Trek.

Yeah, it is pretty poorly written. Often the text is so dull it's probably not even worth reading and i only click the green options now, after reading the whole conversation a few times, it's pointles twaddle usually.
