Yesterday Cryptic announced an upcoming expansion for Champions Online as well as a patch that went live early this morning. The patch was free, but the upcoming expansion is not and it has the community in an uproar. This is considering the fact that game launched, as many would say, unfinished or incomplete. They are charging for a Level 37-40 (current level cap is already 40) single zone addition. No new powersets, no amazing new features beyond being able to go back and redo old missions in a "flashback" system as well as repeating the Halloween event to coincide with real full moons. While those features do sound cool they are merely repeat content. This game has major content gaps and the main last zone to level 34-40 has been unplayable. It may have been fixed with the latest patch but still. This new expansion is content that should have already been in the game at launch, and we as patient fans of the game have waited for them to fix the issues. They have not and are now wanting to charge us for what I feel should be free, as do most others. Please see the link below to see for yourself. If Cryptic is doing us this way, won't they to you guys with STO? I am a lifetime subscriber to CO and right now I am regretting my choice. Think long and hard before signing up for the lifetime. Consider yourselves warned.

Katching ! Cryptic are pushing new boundaries. Truly genius.
Making people pay 300 bucks for unfinished products, and still charge them for end-game content which should have been in game at launch.
Lol...
Well, at least they're going to add more content. Seems incredibly lame to me that they would be pushing a paid expansion this soon but least they aren't washing their hands completely of the game.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
they wont do that until they are satisfied they have every last coin out of as many people as they can.
Well, hard to disagree. You would think if they cared at all about retention they would make an effort to push out some free content first seeing how that is one of the game's bigger complaints.
Really feel kind of bad for people that were looking forward to these games and planned on having it be their main game for some time. This is just ridiculous.

Yeah, lots of people seem to feel this is a bad move on Cryptics part.

Many many pages that are made of mostly people against this kind of move by Cryptic.
So exactly how much money does Cryptic need to make to break even for the base creation price for the game?
Make it so...
Keep doing what you've always done and you will get what you've always gotten. We warned people over and over, @ STO they didn't listen and ranted in defense, at CO Beta / post launch they did the same. It's time you guys realize with this company its not an "if" it happens, or "why" it happens, it's flat out going to happen and keep on happening. Cryptic simply could care less about quality or fan devotion, they just want a payday. Keep telling yourselves it's going to get better, as they charge you for content that was missing from launch. Tell yourselves whatever you need to, because you can bet that's exactly what cryptic has been doing, Telling you whatever they need to. It's up to you when you stop swallowing it.
sounds good to me i hate big patches that do nothing but force poeple to respec their toons from top to bottom and relearn everything all over again...thats why i quit WOW so what the OP is saying is Cryptic wont be a Blizzard clone thats great news for everone who is going to play STO...thank you for the info...
Even them adding a skill cap recently after saying for the longest time there wouldn't be one, I was still on the fence about getting STO (despite every rational part of my brain telling me to run away screaming), but I think this will finally push me off that fence.
WOOT I"M FREE !!!
Back to LotRO for me until TOR, I guess.
Well I will give you that, I don't see them issuing large expansions that do nothing but force people to respec. Cryptic's MO seems to be more along the lines of break things weekly to monthly and force people to respec and give you content you should have in at launch and make you pay additional for it
That doesn't sound like a better business model to me, but hey if thats what floats your boat...
The game is crap just quit
Yeah... I was just over at the CO forums and the rage from people that have supported Cryptic and CO from the beginning is very evident. This was a piss poor judgment call on Cryptic's part and is very telling of what they intend for the future of CO and STO. Charging for an actual game expansion is one thing but trying to charge people for content that was absent from a game at launch and calling it an expansion is totally unacceptable.
I will still play STO after launch as I do like the game in it's current state(even with the CO type lack of content) but how long I'll play will be up to Cryptic at this point. I don't mind the MT store but the first time they try to charge me for a simple content patch I'll be out of there quick. I've already canceled my CO subscription... Glad I only paid 10 dollars and some change for that game on Steam now as I'm not out a whole lot of money over it. I do really feel sorry for those that bought a life time sub though because Cryptic just shot a wounded animal of a game clean through the head.

#1 this is the star trek forum, not the champions forum
#2 if you dont want to pay for an expansion thats free, nor does anyone else, dont, theyll see its not selling and either make it free or drastically cheaper in a few months
#3 sto doesnt have leveling gaps, no lifers made max level in open beta 2 days after the level cap was removed, even if they slow the leveling down we know the content is there
Hm. When I read the headline, I thought "oh no, not another alarmist trolling", but reading the facts I feel the post is kinda justified. Kinda. I know not yet the details, but it sounds very fishy, and it DOES have some meaning to STO, since it does bear some important light to Cryptic.
So they nerf STC, the bleeding damage,as they say "due to wide outcry". Sorry, but thats bollocks. If you listen to every outcry you end up having a worse game than before. Sounds like they are already driven around instead of doing their own vision, if you ask me.
And of course, the main issue, adding a 37-40 zone for money... not good. Not good at all. I mean, yes work costs money and Cryptic employees have families to feed just as well. I withhold my final judgement until I know the price. But it surely is something unsettling, asking to pay anew for something so shortly after launch. But then, Cryptic wasn't quite sensible taking money with their Cryptic bucks in the first place. Enough to keep an eye on Cryptic, for sure.
People don't ask questions to get answers - they ask questions to show how smart they are. - Dogbert
Doing the same repeatable mission all day long to level up is not content. And that is exactly how people levelled fast.
I'm not saying the content isn't there but this is clearly false. These 'no lifers' that made the level cap did it with a known fleet/encounter instance bug/exploit and not by playing through the content. A known bug/exploit that has yet to be fixed I might add even though it has been reported by many testers.
As for this belonging in the CO forum and not here... get a clue dude. This shows all too well what Cryptic's/Atari's business plan is in the post CoX era and if you can't see that you're totally blind. The facts aren't pretty sometimes but they are the facts just the same. Just because you've chosen to turn a blind eye to this obvious attempt to screw over a very loyal fan base doesn't mean that others won't want to see this information and the possible affects it will have on STOs future.
I'd really like to know how many CO subs Cryptic lost since that announcement as I'm sure mine wasn't the only one. This is where STO will be in 4-6 months if Cryptic doesn't wake the hell up and start treating their customers with at least the minimum expected business ethics.

I completely gave up on Cryptic, I simply have no confidence in them anymore.
Their greedy looking practices get worse day by day. Now if the product they delivered was good then maybe I could live with it, but imho all they do is over-hype themselves and deliver flawed/uncompleted stuff.
Champions Online is finished, it is ranked below 200 in XFire (lower than Everquest 1 and DAoC) and is still going down. They are probably just squeezing the last dollar out from the game before they shut it down.
My gaming blog
I play CO.
Blah blah blah...Yeah I agree things look a bit bad right now and yes all CO players know and have pretty much split along lines about it. Some have left, more have stayed but the quality of the new content will make or break them. Those of us still having fun are waiting to see if they come up with the goods. If it sucks...we'll see what happens then.
There is NO miracle patch.
95% of what you see in beta won't change by launch.
Hope is not a stategy.

The thing is you'll have to pay for it before you're going to know if it sucks or not. I wonder if they will at least offer a free dose of Vaseline and a reach around or if they will make those CStore additions for the week the patch releases as well.

Cryptic's patented free weekend?
This is not a game.

Cryptic's patented free weekend?
That went out the door when they left NCSoft at this point(Along with most of their business ethics apparently). They may offer it and they may not.

I would expect either a free weekend and they have confirmed that it will go to PTS before it becomes available. We'll be able to see for ourselves. Until then...whatever. I have 12 toons and the highest is only 23 so I haven't even seen the conten that I have paid for. And before anyone chimes in to say that 23-40 sucks and it's lame, I'll make up my own mind about it.
I won't pay for a zone. Players made that pretty clear so the ball is in their court to deliver a proper expansion and not a pile of fluff.

Lifetime offer is the biggest scam in MMORPG genre so far.
REALITY CHECK
That is certain kind of mentality I can't understand, to buy a lifetime from a company which is currently being run by the guys who released Hellgate London before - a game with as well lifetime offer, that shut down its servers 6 months after.
