What do you expect? Some people just can't hold their disapointment inside... They should be use to launch day debacles by now, most games experience them.

I stopped playing games at launch back in 03 with galaxies. Well I played that one at launch, though I will never do so again, whether reports are good or bad. There's more to it than simple stability and bug issues to. The biggest thing is the community on day one is not the community you will see 6 months after release. Day one communities are filled to the brim with people who simply ruin the experience, spamming chat  and causing any kind of commotion they can. God forbid they find a way to create area lag (SWG CU era vehicle lag anyone?) <--- It actually crashed servers.
I wait usually at least a month now (the initial 30 days), after that those who hate the game are usually long gone. Though some stragglers still insist on letting everyone know how much they hate the game, and how much better game x is. Never understood this logic, doh, you're paying to be there?!?!?!
If you think forums are bad at launch in this day and age , imagine the in-game communities.

I orderd mine from Amazon, so knowing their history they won't even ship the game until Tuesday and I won't get it until Friday at the earliest. Hopefully some of these issues are resolved by then.

Interesting your take on SWG launch since I didn't start playing that POS until 2004. And even then it STILL had issues with crashing to desktop, rubberbanding, characters being stuck, broken missions etc.etc.There were times I couldn't even log in because of some new patch that screwed up everything. And this was more than a year after launch.

On the community, I'm sure that will be so as well the first month or so, but thankfully we have instances and if you turn auto group off  then you don't have to see that crap(LFG,buy this, this game sux!) if you don't want to.

tbh unless I'm missing something you'd be hard pushed to play Klingon much beyond half an hour anyway.

The PvP atm seems to be a bunch of cloaked ships ganking 1 poor sod then running off for the next one. Even decent fed ships have trouble dealing with the up front damage from everyone at once. Fighting another klingon ship is a little more even but seems to go on for an age. Will have to give it another few hours tonight. For Klingon I like very much whats there, but whats there isn't very much.

I've gone back and forth on this, considering giving Cryptic the benefit of the doubt and reinstating my pre-order. But then, last night I caught myself dozing off in the middle of space combat! Not a good sign.

    Funny you should say that...

Just after Christmas I stumbled across some Closed Beta footage which had been posted to You Tube.  19 mins of it.

This was a game I really wanted to learn more about and see for myself...

I watched about 8 minutes and someone came along and got chatting to me.  Normally, I would pause and wait until they had gone to watch a Beta Video... but somehow I just wasn't that interested... I wonder how long it would hold peoples attention.

"just to point out, but anyone who doesn't say SWG was the worst launch of all time is categorically wrong.

    a) rolling server restarts MULTIPLE TIMES A DAY for the first couple of weeks

    b) DAILY SCHEDULED downtime lasting 2-3 hours EVERY DAY for the first month and a half

    c) server rollbacks sometimes wiping out as much as 4-6 hours of playtime

    d) maintenance costs on certain harvester configurations scaling exponentially and not incrementally

    e) maintenance costs rolling over as unpaid BEFORE they were due thus eliminating your property

    f) creature handlers being unmatched in PvP.. as in a true god class

    g) creature handlers getting nerfed within the first month and Bounty Hunters taking over as god class

    h) broken missions, broken missions, broken missions, broken missions (hundreds)

    i) speederpants"

So, does it look like STO will be in this pathetic of a mess once it officially lanuches?

I remember all of that and I think for alot of people it was there first mmo so it is easy to overlook that particular games faults but I've been debating that opinion for years and my answer then to your question is no STO won't have nearly as bad a launch as SWG did.

But this "half start" they ran does in fact get a fail not one day did the server stay online and while I've seen lot's of people who seem to remember once a day I feel like Sat and Fri it went down different times both days.  And I think todays down time could have been handled better.

I wasn't available for the spectacular SWG launch, though I was around to see rubber banding and nonsensical stuff occur all the rest of the time.  Blame it legitimately on the game, or blame it on the tech of the time.  Folks WERE DIALING into SWG.

    Onto what is posted here...

An excellent perspective post.  Unfortunately, I could answer the final question as, YES!  It will likely be that much of a mess, with the exception of the rollbacks, which it looks like you'll at least start at the last instance you entered.  This REALLY does matter, IMO, after earlier beta coding which made you repeat the whole episode no matter what happened.

    Problem is:

Crafting barely exists, and isn't worth doing, and for easily fixed reasons; AoC is sublime in comparison.  It's a stretch to call it crafting rather than a rep system that requires generic goods, which, even worse, can't be located in the area that you do the "crafting".  You don't even get access to what would be a benefit until it's no longer a benefit.  I hardly believe people actually thought it up... it's the single biggest argument for de-evolution there ever was:  complexity leading to nonsense.  green II's and normal II's have little difference.  Tack onto that being a little patient and waiting for 3's and 4's?  I get blues in 3's and 4's now, but can only "craft" green 2's?  a joke.  A punchline that should've been received in the first month of closed beta.  I can only assume the issue was ignored.

Exploration:  feels like another afterthought.  Another series of missions from a random set of 12 or so scenarios.  This, I can accept, though I see why others don't.

Broken missions:  still exist.  not as bad as beta, but I'll still get the anomaly animation rather than a mission based animation.  It's easy for me to work out coming from a support background, but not your average user.  This, I can accept.

65% server uptime:  i offer a compliment and an insult, here.  When the servers are up, they run pretty freakin good. Hiccups here and there, but not bad at all.  Then they crash for hours.  This leads me to believe it's not a overwhelming pop issue, but rather a bad code issue.  I've yet to hear why this will NOT be an issue at launch, or why a 65% uptime will change to a 99.9% uptime when we're live at launch.  Ya never know, but still... this I cannot accept, once things go "live".

This is what happens when you launch a game with far too short of an OB.  The OB is supposed to be used to stress test and work out this type of crap BEFORE you launch the game.  Clearly Cryptic didnt get the memo.  Now we are in paid beta phase

OP, you may want to check your pc system stats, Head start ran great for me, only three server crashes on my end and everything else was excelent. Granted I did run across one bug but other than that no complaints from anyone. Ultimately,  a smooth run for me and an exciting launch day to boot.
