Considering cash shops like the ones in blizzards game World of Warcraft have had no real ill effect on the game, I have no doubt TOR will have something very similar.
I expect a shop where you can change race, sex, name. Most likely have additional things like pets, fluff stuff (let's say there is space, a ship that does the same thing as the next, but looks different, same for "mounts").
If they start to offer XP potions, or armor +2, or lightsaber of loldamage +4, would most likely hurt the game a very large amount.
I expect a monthly fee, the same as any normal MMO. I expect a cash shop similar to wows. I expect updates to the game free of cost, and big expansions costing money. I think anyone that closes their eyes, covers their ears, and screams when they hear cash shop are pretty silly :P.
I am not planning on playing this for a monthly fee (I only get about 10 hours a month that I can play games). However, if they had a no fee + Cash Shop option, I would play it...
I won't rail against rmt in general. There is no point. I'll just say that my preference is to pay a re-occurring sub for a good mmo and then know I've got the whole package and not think about money again while I play.
Cash shops don't belong in purely P2P mmo's.. I probably won't play this one but if I did and there was a CS i'd be pretty pissed.
But then in the same sense I wouldn't be surprized either, it's something the consoles have been doing for awhile now. For a complete 360 experience you have to pay monthly for xbox live, plus the initial game price, and then there's the extra downloadable content to buy.. which is pretty much needed to make your game feel like it's complete(without it the games usually feel half finished/rushed).
So for P2P mmo's to do the same but in the form of a CashShop instead of DLC kind of makes sense.
The absolute best stuff should only be attainable through normal gameplay, but i wouldn't mind there being cosmetic items and xp boosts or even plex items.

I'm expecting there to be some type of DLC somewhere, and to be honest, I don't mind that so much. The Dragon Age DLC was very reasonably priced. I expected to be more miffed about it than I actually was - because it turned out to be good value for money.
What I would be worried about (but can't see happening) is an item mall that turns the game into a "Pay to win" scenario.
Reason I can't see that happening is because the game seems to be putting story above "progression", in the sense that to progress you must follow your character's story. I don't see being able to pay for mega xp pots or "I win!" pots playing into that in any realistic sense.
All of this is pure conjecture anyway, no matter how any of us feels about item malls/cash shops, what it comes down to is - do you want to play TOR? If yes, in all honesty, most of us will still buy the game regardless. That's why I said "undecided" - I don't know what item mall / RMT transaction model they have in mind, and I may not like what they come up with, but I really really want to play the game.
In all honesty, I would prefer to have an OPTION to have these mid-session transactions over subscription.
"Other "mid-session" EA titles include FIFA Online and NBA Street. These games are either provided for free, or for a nominal charge, and are then supported by further microtransactions--small payments in exchange for services or content. "
Why?
I said an option. Those who play a lot could choose the subscription mode while those who play occasionally could go with the mid-session transactions. I think it is a great idea. Not everyone plays these games 24/7 or want to join large guilds to raid daily. Some just want their occasional fix of Star Wars.
I would also prefer the option, if Bioware can really introduce a steady flow of smaller content patches in shorter intervals than a typical MMO expansion. Say that in every month you would get to continue your core story or access new area of content. I would love that. I could take off weeks from the game and come back to it with my friends when new content is introduced.

Way to stand up for your cause. Since almost every major MMO released lately has some form of cash shop....enjoy gaming vicariously through others.
Or not gaming in the majors at all, which is more of a realistic option for me. I have no desire to be fleeced for in game items/ abilities (even fluff ones) that should be part of the given content... I am suprised you do and that people in general are lining up at the barn door so readily.
Way to stand up for no cause at all.
Coming away from the quoted post here though... I am amazed at how easily the corperations have seduced the gaming public on this matter.
I personally don't think people who want to buy their rewards in a game are gamers at all, or even actually playing a game tbh. They are more like consumers in a virtual market space that happens to have a chat room attached. What pleasure/ satisfaction is gained from simply purchasing that new ship skin (or whatever)? I don't see the sense of achievement in it myself.
Lets look at it logically with Pay to Achieve 'gaming' aside... Corperations like RMT shops because they make them more money then subs, especially if they can get a sub as well. That money only comes from one place, and thats you. Hence it is undeniable that RMT costs the gamer more for content that should be in anyhow. An argument for RMT shops is an argument for more expensive gaming experiences. Why do you want that?
By the way, I find it funny that every 'gamer' that supports in game item shops always claims to 'never use them myself'... I have yet to have this conversation with a gamer who is open and honest about their RMT use and how much they really spend per month. It is like they are embaressed or something... Everyone always claims to spend nothing, or next to nothing, yet RMT games make more money then subs ones for the devs... I have no idea how that works lol.
a cash shop WITH a monthly fee? NO. i won't play any games with RMT with a sub to boot. character transfers, name changes i don't mind. but nothing more.
I would have to wait until it actually released. I wouldn't really care. I'm not going to boycot something just because it has something the might maybe possibly be bad for it. Even if they did have items that would make you better (which they won't), I would still play it. I probably wouldn't touch PvP though. I would still have fun playing through it. I recently re-played KOTOR and I must say I can't wait to play through those stories.

I agree.
There is a massive difference between meta game SERVICES, which though ideally would be part of the sub I don't mind as they have nothing to with game play.
There is also nothing wrong, imo, with DLC zones and othe playable content that is there to be learned and beaten as long as the core game isnt light on it originally (as CO is for example).
My issue is with purchasable ingame reward items, fluff or otherwise, put in to simply nickel and dime the player to death.
If the cash shop gives the purchasing player an advantage in gameplay over normal paying players, No I would not.
If the shop however is for fun, unique items (custom models, outfits, missions?) and gives no disadvantage to the normal paying player, Yes I would still play.
If someone else is getting more fun out of the game due to paying more money than I am, then that is a deal-breaker.
It makes no real difference to me if those items for sale are 'novelty' items. If I can't get them by playing the game, I don't want others getting them by paying more. And, no, ridiculous grinds to get cash items are not 'playing the game.'
'Fun' items don't matter? I don't know what you are playing for, but fun is my reason.

My game time is not driven by what others around me are doing, I don't covet other players items, lvling speed or PvP prowess.
All I'm interested in is ME, not YOU.
So when SWTOR goes live and all those with more money than sense use the cash shop to get that exp boost of 20% for 1 hr, I'l be happily playing the game, immersing myself within the story.
If they happen to provide items that are better than the items you win in-game, and afaik no Western MMO has done that, yet, it still won't bother me in the slightest, because it won't impact on my gaming.
The only thing about the cash shops that would bother me in the least is double xp potions and the like, but those are highly unlikely. This is Bioware we're talking about here. I trust them pretty well. I've played Bioware games for years and they haven't let me down yet.
No. It's EA we're talking about here.

Surprising. People are still saying this? I guess some never learn.
Other than vague statements by devs who have a lot of money at stake, I have seen nothing to indicate that SWTOR won't be just that.
Oh, maybe it won't have subscription fees. I give you that point.
Actually Greed0104 was refering back to the MMORPG staff who pointed out to all those who kept creating threads that SWTOR was not an MMO that it was in their eyes an MMO, and that all further threads created would be heavily moderated.
If you care to argue the point then take it up with the forum moderators.

EA has owned Bioware for some time. Hasn't stopped Bioware from making some of the best and most selling RPG's of all time. Just look at ME1, ME2, and DAO. All top contenders for game of the year and best seller games.
I don't much care for EA myself but so far EA has shown a very hands off approach when it comes to Bioware and that has shown to work time and time ageain. If there's one company EA doesn't want to mess up its Bioware and I doubt they will take a chance at trashing the Bioware name just to make a quick buck.

Is it free to play with cash shop?
Answer: Maybe but not likely
Is it pay to play with a cash shop?
Answer: No

If it only sold cosmetic items, yeah, I don't care. If they started selling XP packs, extremely awesome armor/weapons, etc., then I'd quit.

Depends on what is in the cash shop.

No
Perfectly stated.
Hell no !.. It better to be only for extra character slots and to pay the monthly fee !!1 That's it..
If they did have it.. I would play a free to play MMO :P
