Hardly.
I wasn't taking a " the sky is falling" approach at all. I suggest re-reading what I wrote, and then actually taking the time to try and comprehend it. Rather than just spewing out something you heard someone else say before, in a misguided attempt to appear clever.
I should report you for trolling, because that is all you have done by making the above statement. However, I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and hopefully you take the time to write out an informative response explaining why this latest piece of news regarding the patcher should not be a surprise to those of us that consider it to be just that.
If you think that this is standard practice among game developers, you couldn't be more mistaken. Keeping it in-house is the standard and very few game development studios hire outside consultants to work on there projects, hence why it is such a shock to those of us who are legitmately informed on the subject.
It's not rocket science.
firstly i didnt attempt to appear clever atleast didnt intent it, and i thank you for the change and not reporting me just yet
i really dont see whats the big deal here there contractors everywhere you go so why wouldnt gaming company be able to use them ? even if its not standart practise now who is to say it isnt in couple of years ? in this day of age when my countrys army medical side is worked by contractors. and here we talking about patcher for PC game, its not rocket science.

If it's not rocket science, why did SV need somebody to do it for them? Kind of makes the point. And something so central to their game, to boot?
Consultants are used to develop or migrate applications for which there is no inhouse expertise.
So basically what SV is saying here, is that they don't have enough knowledge to program anything like a patcher -- even though I gave them the code snippets for it months ago -- so they contracted it out.
Which goes directly against the idea that they have any "programmers" on staff at all. They have a bunch of Unreal Modders. And you folks think they will solve complex database issues and network problems? Jeez. You're in for a rude awakening.
they`ve already made one patcher why wouldnt they another ? well like SV explained it let them have more time to focus on the game. this info is up to read at MO forums atleast. so far im keeping my faith on SV to deliver taken right now the lag is bit too much for me, but i hear patch is nearing.

did i mention content ? sorry if i wasnt clear to you, i was talking about the lag that the game is trouble with ATM.
and all the content i need to start playing is in game already.

So if they had more time to focus on the game itself due to making that decision, then why is the game in such a poor state still this far along in its development life-cycle?
The answer is very simple, but I'll let you try to figure it out on your own. It really is common sense.

you can try but i wont go down that easy. you know i knew what i signed up for, i knew that this game might have some issues being produced by indie company so far everythign has gone better than i expected actually, devs have been honest about theyr work and i really got no reason not to trust these guys.
and even so whats the alternative `? another themepark sputed out by company in hopes for fast buck.
small change for great adventures in nave? oh hell ill grasp that opportunity over and over again.

And your mentality, to accept any piece of garbage that a developer might spew out in order to make a quick buck is what will ruin the MMO genre, specifically PvP sandboxes.
I'd rather get rid of the bad games, so that good developers have a shot, not let the bad developers stick around and give the sandbox MMO a bad name so that nobody bothers trying it that actually KNOWS what they are doing.

obviously making quick buck from niche game isnt really viable. imo its bit better from know IP turned into clone of one of THOSE games.
id rather let all flowers bloom. more then better one is bound to be pretty.
and what about your mentality after months and months they denied you to make theyr forum you still bash MO in here seems like its controlling you a bit.
Hahaha you're a joke. Most of your time is obviously spent on this forum, bashing MO.
Yes, but I'm getting paid for my time right now.
If I was working on a project for somebody else, I'd also expect to be paid.
I can see why but who would pay you to discredit a game? No doubt another company but then it really says more about them than SV.
I'm not getting paid to discredit a game. I do that for fun.
I get paid for my job, where I get to post on MMORPG during my workday. It's like a perk, and since I'm the boss... it's a win-win.
Your being paid to post on MMORPG during your workday....Somehow, even if you are "the boss" I'm sure thats against company policy... Whats that, your self-employed? Hmm wonder what your clientel would think if they knew they were paying you right now to post. Im not even an MO fan in the slightest...personally i find the game buggy at the moment, but what bothers me about this post is that no matter how you look at it, your currently ripping someone off by posting it during your workday.
GO BACK TO WORK and post these sorts of threads on your own time, not someone else's.

Spending all day on this forum complaining about how unprofessional SV is, is one thing.
But you my good sir is 'the boss' of a company (or at least your own boss) and you spend your worktime complaining about how unprofessional another company is. If you don't see the irony then your truly lost.

I have to admit, I do have a penchant for watching train wrecks. It's entertainment, plain and simple to me. The discussion and debate here are part of that entertainment, and when I'm off work, I go home and don't care about MO or SV or anything because I have better things to do.
But while I'm at work, getting paid to do nothing right now (I'm in finance, we have no budget for new stuff, so it's all maintenence mode right now), I may as well get a bit of enjoyment about the fact that my internet access isn't restricted or monitored
I made a Mortal Online folder, moved files from the torrent into that folder, then started up the launcher.
It obtained revision info, downloaded 2 patches (both .exe) and requested I install them.
Game was updated and now the launcher says:
Client is up to date.
Ready!
So... where does it matter where it came from?
Here is the person who is claiming to be the creator... and since SV is keeping the topic open... I figure he isn't lying:
Paratus:
That's me. I created the launcher for SV. This allowed them to focus on the actual game, instead, while still getting the new launcher they were wanting.
It's quite safe, though. I provide them with the source code and they make changes and check it all out themselves. So, technically, it's not really an exe file you're running from me, but from SV.
PS: I'm not the Australian John, I'm the Canadian one. Although I do know him (he used to be Canadian too). Most people know me from the World of Warcraft site I made (hah.. I know..), WowStead.com.
Ultimately, something only matters because you WANT it to matter... which seems to be the case here.
Projects/code/requests get contracted out all the time in many different businesses, and once the product is returned it belongs to the company that sent out the contract.
They paid for it.
In this case though... it doesn't look like SV paid to have this done... actually it looks like someone volunteered their time and energy to do it. It also looks like SV left that person's name in their launcher/code/etc...
Seems pretty stand-up of them to acknowledge that... to thank someone for their time and effort.

Another line: They know how to change it, and they could if they chose to. If you say so. My only point was to say that they don't have the knowledge inhouse to do this, and for a company you know -- PROGRAMMING A GAME -- that is kind of dysfunctional.
You don't go to UPS and find out they contracted the actual DELIVERY of stuff to FedEx, do you?
ok, i tried the beta for a pitifully short amount of time (i was crashing repeatedly), from the little I saw i can safely say it failed to catch my interest even as a WIP, but now my main question:
Why is the game simply a content folder? Why is there no installation process? The patcher is the least to worry about, how about the installer?
Hm, this all makes sense now. No wonder the game is in the shape it is, they are not competent enough coders. Most likely they are just using the Unreal Engine and mod it here and there.
I mean, does any of their staff have any experience in advanced game development?

Actually you would be really surprised to find out how UPS did there delieveries when they where still young and didn't have the massive fleet of aircraft and ground transports they do today.
And why does someone volunteering to make a launcher / patcher instantly make the company incapable of the knowledge needed to do it inhouse? Maybe it just came down to the fact that they wanted programmers working on the actual game and didn't want to pull anyone off there respective jobs to spend days working on a patcher?

Because the company has proven they are incapable of making a working patcher.
They don't have any programmers, they have unreal scripters -- so the only logic they make and use is inside the Unreal engine. This is directly at odds with what the CEO stated, that they have real programmers -- and here they are, making a cornerstone of their game from some 'fan' who had time to whip up a patcher for them.
Again, consulting is generally used because a company lacks expertise in an area or needs extra hands. And since this guy wasn't a consultant, but rather a volunteer.. it makes it all the more pathetic.
My boss has watched me post on MMORPG. He doesn't care, because my job is *results oriented*. If I deliver on time, and in an adequate fashion, what I am supposed to, he could give a damn about what else I'm doing.
As for the 'crusade', it only happens while I am actually AT WORK (bored lately), and the fact that SV still hasn't refunded my money gives me incentive to talk about the game. It would have ended quite well if they refunded me many months ago as I had asked. They give me a refund, I leave these forums because my vested interest is gone. But if they have my money, then I'll be happy to watch them cause a train wreck, seeing as how so much of their work is done by 'volunteers' from the forums, to the patcher, to the installer... LOL -- the company is a joke, and if you think they are going to be able to support a game then I think you're in for a rude awakening.

and what about your mentality after months and months they denied you to make theyr forum you still bash MO in here seems like its controlling you a bit.
... my time is valuable

The patcher works.

Another line:
They know how to change it, and they could if they chose to. If anything it says a lot about them for not changing it.

But then.. you don't think that matters...
I'm working on the new MO billing system, beta should be up by launch.
I win!!! LOL@U
Im actually preparing some steak and fries for lunch myself
ok, i tried the beta for a pitifully short amount of time (i was crashing repeatedly), from the little I saw i can safely say it failed to catch my interest even as a WIP, but now my main question:
Why is the game simply a content folder? Why is there no installation process? The patcher is the least to worry about, how about the installer?
Hm, this all makes sense now. No wonder the game is in the shape it is, they are not competent enough coders. Most likely they are just using the Unreal Engine and mod it here and there.
I mean, does any of their staff have any experience in advanced game development?
My gaming blog

If they used Hercules patcher it would be OK (for Hercules at least). -:)
Mine isn't nearly done yet, I wouldn't release it. I have only a little time to work on it and it's ugly as sin
[Mod Edit]
