Computer and Videogames is reporting on some interesting bits of information on the Warhammer 40K MMOG, which was mentioned during last night's THQ investor call.
During the call, THQ boss Brian Farrell mentioned to investors that the 40K MMOG would be fully unveiled at this year's E3, encouraging the investors to come by and check it out:
"The highest ranking revenue opportunity for us clearly is the Warhammer 40k MMO. Again, I encourage you to come by and see what we are seeing at E3 with that when we fully unveil it, but we think we are going to have a very competitive MMO. "

mm this is a sci-fi if i recall ,i tried to read the serie but its very hard to follow the story
we ll see they might be on to something here.
Hope it does better than current Warhammer MMO
Interesting read, but I was surprised at the comment about a lifespan of 7 years. UO and many others have gone well past that, and even EVE looks like it will be still growing at the 7 year mark, wonder why they chose to limit themselves like that? (maybe from a return on investment perspective?)

Gah... I have fond memories of the WH40K tabletop, but as MMO? That's bound to become a disappointment, same as STO.
What they'll do is take a generic fantasy MMORPG, rename humans to space marines and elves to eldar and some orks. Tyranids won't be playable because that would be too different from a generic race, so they'll be the ones you kill in PvE. Then they add some useless feature and hype it up about how great it is and ready is the WH40k MMORPG.
Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)
Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)
this serie is on a total new front if i recall
its a galactic war some got sci-fi techno other got plain looking sword that will cut trough titanium!etc
like i say i tried to read it but i will probably have to find the beginning of the story to make sense of this one thing is sure
this book serie is epic way bigger then warcraft.
Well, you're all cheery this morning!
They screw this up and I will drive my Honda Civic into their building at high speed with my belt of a thousand stitches.
Banzai!
Here we go again! I'll be watching this one with interest!

mm!dont know what their plan is for this !but whatever they chose this is a big job for any company trying to undertake it!
THQ has a lot of courage ! ihope they succeed!
ill just wish them good luck.
If you want an example of their work - pick up Darksiders, yes it's basically Zelda/Kain meets a slower NG/GoW/DMC, however it's a damn fun game never the less..
First off we know it's not a MMOFPS, it's a 'classic' MMO, so yea throw in the 'wow clone' comments now considering thats like calling any burger a 'macdonals clone', only two real things we need to hope for - it's NOT faction based, if they're looking at WAR thats notes on how faction pvp on mass DOESN'T work and more focus is put on the guild vs guild combat (making sure 'guilds' can only be one race - ala lore) and secondly the game puts more focus on open world NOT instanced content (it's allowed to be hubbed), so things 'matter' and change in game (planet control is a good idea).
40k Online yea may not be 'totally different' to what we see now, but as long as it's kinda like WAR but a whole lot more meaning and reason to fight behind it - i don't mind.
Bring on the WARRRRGGHH!
I really like the setting and some of the lore of Warhammer 40k. Im looking forward to what they have come up with
lol!poster 12!you see wow in your soup!i can safelly say this warhammer 40k is has far as you can go from wow!
i read this and what i read made me thing more of !!if you need a comparision it would be halo meet wow !deeply meshed together.
its very hard to explain and the way i saw some title i think there are lot of era in this serie!
I'm sure we'll have the same tank, heal, dps crap with shiny space lore to ignore. I'll be whacking on random_spacemob_01 with my Frost Axe or Thunder Hammer and the only change in the mob will be little numbers floating over his head and his health bar dropping minutely with each hit. Physical blows actually knocking back/down your enemy, dismemberments, armor being damaged and dented, and other possibilities that might make the combat more exciting and immersive than a slugfest between two damp sponges will probably be left out.
This could be a real mold breaker, but I'm not gonna hold my breath.
Well it's NOT going to be 'halo meets WoW' firstly beacuse Halo is a FPS, and they've clearly stated it's a MMORPG not MMOFPS, and secondly it's likely to be more akin to it's fellow IP title WAR then WoW mainly because dispite then faction gameplay inbalances and heavily focused on the instanced parts of the game NOT the Forts/keeps - WAR kinda works.. With 40k they just need to scale in back more to 'guild vs guild' (more likely to be called troops ala like the tabletop version refference ) and I hope it's more focused on capturable objectives in the open world as the 'endgame' so the world is constantly changing not 'static' as with most MMORPGs then relay on instancing their content..
And as for the comment of 'Wow in my soup' - I said that because most of the time any MMORPG that comes out these days is instancly dubbed a 'wow clone', not matter if it's a scifi or fantasy setting 40k isn't going to break the MMORPG mold, reason being is that the 100 pound gollira that is WoW which most people claim games 'clone' is in fact the very basic goundworks of any MMO: WoW has never broke any new ground with MMORPG it's just refined everyone elses ideas and put the Blizzard stamp on it, hence the burger refference - 40k WILL be dubbed a 'wow clone' for simply being a MMORPG, sad as it seems it will happen.
Bring on the WARRRRGGHH!
lol, maybe they mean that it will take 7 years for them to it anywhere near what an mmo should be like xD
it will be intresting to see what they do with this game. Hope it doesnt end up like WAR as many other like myself were disappointed with it who were fans!
(DDDDDDDDDDDAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH raises plunger in salute to the Space Marine Chapters!)
All my opinions are just that..opinions. If you like my opinions..coolness.If you dont like my opinion....I really dont care.
Playing: ESO, WOT, Smite, and Marvel Heroes
All I can do is cross my fingers and wait with baited breath. I followed WAR from the very beginning and had really high hopes for it. I think I will be a little more cautious with my optimism this time. 40k is one of my favorite settings of all time, though. I loved the Dawn of War series. I can only hope they adhere to that level of respect for the IP.
Please, don't let this game suck.
Prax
Interesting news.
But the best news is that Mythic isn't going to touch this IP.
After ruining Warhammer, I don't want them to do the same with the other Games Workshop IP.
(Set fire to the pungler with a Burna - GREEN IS DA' BEST! ME DAKKA BETT'A!) :P
Aye the issue with WAR it was just a bad version of DAoC reskinned in Warhammer colours... At least with 40K being under the same parent publisher company with Dawn of War which has done the IP justist so far, and hope Relic's next project Space Marine continues that trend.
THQ can at least have a backbone lore based around the current 40k lore to use but unlike Mythic that just made one up and it didn't work with the fans..
Like I said as long as it gives us a reason to login gameplay or lore wise... this is going to do well at minimum
Bring on the WARRRRGGHH!
I want to have hope, but I don't have any left.
The MMO industry has chewed up my soul and spat it out on the floor, taken a dump on it and spread it around with it's great big cloned boot over the years.
I like this IP though.
Could be a really really fun settings, lets wish them luck..
Meh, they'll find some way to make it suck. A good IP is secondary to good game design. But maybe they can get that crazy brit again(Paul) to get the hype machine going for this.
No doubt exciting news!
But.... being a fan of GW's products for over a decade and after the huge disappointment of Warhammer Online, I can't help but being sceptical about this one. Good luck and all the rest, hope they pull it out.
Thing is making an MMO based on the 40k universe, I think requires a radically new and different approach to how an MMO is supposed to be played.
Anyway, we got something to look forward to the summer. Pray to the Emperor it is not another big disappointment.
Blood for the Blood God! Skulls for the Skull Throne! Hmmm... Sorry got a bit carried away. ^^ If they do this right it could be a LOT of fun. On the other hand, if they make a dogs breakfast of it like warhammer...
