Why to reduce rating for all other game except EQII??

As EQII release today and it add to game list and being No1 for now, I suspect that why all other games rating are put down about 0.5 except EQII? Just to promote EQII or something?? I have no doubt for EQII rating but why to reduce other games rating??image

Please explain.

It could be EQ2 fans rating other games lower. And I'm sure it will happen again when WoW releases(it might have even happened already with OB for WoW).

There's a thread in the general discussion thread that said that ALL of the other games that were high in ratings went down exactly .5 when EQII was listed. People basically saw it happen right when EQ2 was added. Unless there was a coordinated effort by about 200 people to drop the ratings that far in the space of 8 hours, MMORPG.com are fudging the ratings. This has been suspected for some time by some people (Take eve online for instance.)

    MMORPG.com has lost all respectability.

What you are seeing is the "curve" that we have.  If you look back this same thing happened when CoH went live.  Let me explain the math behind our curve.  First let me highlight some points:

    1) The curve only ADDS to a games real score.
    2) Before the curve all games fell in the 3-6 range - it was really boring!
    3) All this curve does is "zoom in" on the scores in the positive direction
    4) What caused the recent surge is that EQII is getting a "natural" score far higher than other games (as is common during a release).
    5) All the games that you say "went down" actually are still showing a score higher than the actual score determined by the average of the votes.
    6) We only curve the released games, not the hypes as they don't seem to need this to see a good range.

    Now for the math:

    1) The system looks at all the games natural scores and finds the very highest score.  Let's assume these are the natural scores for the top 5 games (Example only):

    1. EverQuest II   = 7.0
    2. DAoC = 6.6
    3. Anarchy Online = 6.4
    4. EVE Online = 6.3
    5. City of Heroes = 6.2

In this list, EQII would be the highest score with a 7.0.

    2) It now takes that high score and finds the number that lies between it and a perfect 10.  This is 7+((10-7)/2) = which is 8.5.

    3) Now it determines what you would have to multiply 7 by to reach 8.5.  This is found by 8.5/7 = which is roughly 1.2142.  THIS IS THE CURVE.

    4) Now the system multiplies all scores on the list by this value.  Note that this will ALWAYS be a positive result for the game.  The updated list would look like this:

    1. EverQuest II   = 7.0 = CURVED:8.5
    2. DAoC = 6.6 = CURVED:8.0
    3. Anarchy Online = 6.4 = CURVED: 7.7
    4. EVE Online = 6.3 = CURVED: 7.6
    5. City of Heroes = 6.2  = CURVED: 7.5

If you look this over you will see the impact if you have a list of natural scores in the top 10 going from 6.0 to 6.2 (which is about what they were) - then a game comes along that earns a natural score of 7.2 (like EQII).  Then the curve dissolves...but in truth what you are seeing is closer to the real scores users made for these games...

    Please post any questions...

EDIT: We would NEVER fudge the scores at the site.  In fact, if a respectable company would like to audit our scores and system I would welcome it.  We added this curve because about 1.5 years ago the members found it boring that all the scores ranged from 3 to 6...the natural solution was to just "zoom" in on this to magnify the slight differences between the scores.  If we removed the curve right now you would have even a bigger gap between EQII and the next game down.

Also, my money says that you will see this happen when WoW releases and you will see the EQII score settle down as players play the game longer...this happens with all of our major listings after a release.

What relevance is the score? If you want to play EQ2 play it. I think it's silly to believe scoring is anything more than entertainment, and has no impact on the sales of a game.

Why does anyone care what random strangers think of your entertainment choices?

If Admin is getting money (and he's not) for how the scores turn out. Good for him, he needs to get paid too.

If your the type that uses web site polls to determine what to buy, send me a email. I've got a great price on a bridge, just for you.

Aye, we do collect money - but only for advertising.  If it makes anyone feel better no one is getting rich around here - nor do we sleep much! image

And if you look at the site you will see that we don't do much advertising for SOE...I would like to - but the couple times that their PR companies have approached us we did not have much space left (hence the tiny EQII campaign that ran here last week).

I do find it funny that people think we would jeapordize our relationships with 40+ advertising accounts over a twist of the game scores for one company...that would be truely insane.

Anyone notice that EQ2 went down 0.5 or 0.6 now that WoW came out?  This curve is kind odd- Everquest 2 should not go down so much now that WoW is out as it is easily as good a product.

I hope you check and remove any ratings that purposely mess up ratings such as someone giving all 0`s to a game.

That sir is a matter of your opinion, and in mine it is not. WoW has much more to offer in the long run with many more features - but that also is an opinion. You shouldn't express your opinion if your not going to be non bias to an extent, and that was a bias remark. See ya.

What you need to realize is that the curve ONLY HELPS GAME SCORES.  The real and true score for all the games is LOWER than you see on our site.  The REAL game scores are something like:

    Wow: 7.8
    EQII: 7.0
    EVE: 6.9

etc, etc....there is no easy way to deal with "all 10" or "all 1" scores...we can't just dissalow them.  Is it not someones right to score a game like that?  It gets hard to draw lines...

However we do have some new and creative plans for scores.  These will be added in the coming months. image
