As the op of this thread, maybe i should mention that i actually canceled my subscription, which kinda goes against the spirit of my op if you so will. This isnt so much because i suddenly found out i dont like the gamemechanics after all, but more due to disliking the direction cryptic took the endgame(Infected). Had they gone the direction of space heavy episodes instead of groundheavy i probably would have stayed a subscriber, now i took my leave and will probably check back in a couple months to see if there is more content to my liking. I seriously think concentrating on groundcombat is a serious error on cryptics part, at such a early time a game should focus on its strengths, not its weaknesses(unless ofc you have enough resources to turn a weekness to a strenght ... or something). Personally while i find the groundcombat bearable alot of other games do it alot better, both in pvp and pve, while the spacecombat was unique and less in need of polish.
Interesting. I canceled my recurring subscription as well, but not because of that. I think the ground is something they badly need to work on as I get tired of being in space all the time.My reason is for the lack things to do besides combat. There is nothing to explore on the ground except when you have a mission there. The economy needs to be totally redone as Memory Alpha is just a big time sink. They need to provide more things to do in game besides more space combat as I would guess that to be the biggest reason people won't resub.
Hmm im ok with only having combat, if the combat is diversified and fun. And i think we need not just more spacecombat, but actual spacecombat to begin with. NPCs in space hardly put up any fight, even the borg cubes are weaksauce. Spacecombat simply is boring, not conceptually, but because the mobs are far to weak and get so easily outplayed by picking the right BOs. But i agree that better crafting and a more meaningful economy would go a long way.
That being said that wouldnt have made me keep my subscription, what point is there in crafting if there isnt anything where you could put the items you crafted to use for? Spaceside currently there isnt any reason to pimp your ship, maybe pvp, but even there you die so fast with focusfire that it doesnt really matter wether you have a purple shield or a green one.
Actually the differences between common stuff and epic stuff is too small period. I have no incentive to get better items for the tiny difference they currently offer, and many things like the the engi resist consoles are pointless cause they are far to weak and stacking penalized on top.
Currently i feel 90% of the customization/advancement happens by ship, skill and BO choices. And all of these stop progressing at endgame regardless of the episodes they add. Also the skillsystem puts us into a deadend easily. Points in beams, disruptors, Quantums and Starcruiser? Guess what ship i fly and how its fitted ...
Edit: And more groundstuff to do imho a) would take to much programming/mechanical changes b) still not satisfy those people who are bored in space. Groundcombat/exploration is boring by nature in this game, its conceptually broken and not startrek like or even making any sense at all. A unshielded klingon taking like a dozen phaserhits and still coming at me wtf?
Example: I've seen some people say that ship combat gets repetitive. How is it any different than melee combat in WoW, LOTRO, or any other fantasy MMO, though, where you fight the same way with the same character over and over?
You are kidding me right? WOW's combat has a lot more variety than STO.
For example, take a pally ....
If you are facing melee mobs, you can fight several at a time.
If they run, stop them with stun, or big spell towards the end.
If you are facing ranged mobs, fight one at a time, or else you will get hammered from afar.
Pop CDs for bigger boss type mobs.
There are a lot more variations .. pulling is important
