Hum Miracle Patch, I know I've heard that somewhere...oh yeah, Shadowbane, Dark and Light...xD Honestly I kinda like the game, but damn it's a fucking mess right now. Horrible Lag, TONS of bugs, hacking...it's nowhere near ready for OB nor release.
That's why it's not released yet! Trust in StarVault. They have been working on all the fixes for a long time. Miracle Patch on the 22nd will fix everything. You will be amazed!
So some people have managed to hack the game and take control of the insta-kill, teleport-in guards. They have used them to Spam website links, and also to kill of the entire population of towns instantly, both flagged and non-flagged players. And any thread about it gets locked. Please tell me again how this game is not gonna crash and burn?
Simple. IT'S IN BETA! Since people on these forums don't seem to know what that is, so I have included a definition from the Bridgefield Group:
beta test- A software version released to a limited population of users for functionality and bug test evaluation before the final release to the general user base.
You want people hacking shit and breaking things in a beta. That means that the company has an opportunity to fix these problems. It sounds like you got into the open beta and thought that you should just be able to play the game normally and get started. Stop. Uninstall the game and wait until full release. The fact that you aren't even trying to break things and aren't testing the game should tell you that you are a detriment to the beta-testing process. If you want to still play in the beta, TRY TO BREAK SHIT! That's the only way these software companies can put out a great finished product.

I would typically agree with you Astral but this is OPEN beta, not closed beta.
Most systems should be in place and in working order, so that they can concentrate on load testing which is what open beta typically is about. Not overhauling major game systems like AI, non working patcher, or fixing serious security flaws. I'm not saying it's not still a time to find bugs, because it is, but they should be minor things which is not what is happening in MO right now. They have serious core mechanics problems with this game that is supposed to be released within weeks.
I say this as a fan of the game. I want this game to succeed. We need more sandbox games in the genre, but what we don't need is more half baked wannabe's.
If this game turns around on the 22nd as the developers seem to think they can make happen, I will happily eat my words, but I'm not expecting the "miracle" to happen.

Thought their Open Beta was 'Open' to the general public for free. So basically in the next couple of weeks when the game goes retail it will be a Payed Beta? Maybe you can educate me here seeing as you seem to know the answers.

No. Then it will be a retail release. That's different. Retail releases should not have glaring bugs in them. However, one of the reasons that companies do "open betas" is so that they will get a lot of new, free testers who will do stupid shit the publisher never thought of like hacking NPC guards. Also, it allows the company to stress test their servers to see if their equipment can actually handle the load. As far as this particular issue, it is really bad, but probably very easy to fix and would you rather they discovered it before or after you paid for the game?

The release of Mortal Online starts on Monday the 1st of February 2010. It begins by
launching a Free Open Beta that invites gamers all over the world to try out Mortal
Online for free. The Free Open Beta will continue for a limited time until the end of
the release phase, when Mortal Online enters Gold status.
This was the first paragraph from the press release. I want you to look at it again, this time with your eyes open, and see what it says. Unless something has drastically changed with the English language since January 31, 2010- this game is still in beta

I grow very weary of this saying, but perhaps the next time a person tells me how useless the United Nations' conferences are, I'll just tell them "Quiet you! It's still in beta".

Per Star Vault's "About" page (imaged embedded in the event "history" changes):
That's right - the game was supposed to launch over 6 months ago. Obviously, it wasn't ready for release and beta's no excuse. Regardless, you keep parroting the same "beta" line, but you fail to understand what the various stages of beta generally mean in terms of game development? Most companies use "open" beta for marketing purposes, because the game has already gone gold by that point in time. Here are some references:
First, the question needs to be defined – open beta or closed beta?
In a closed beta, the goal is to get everything fixed. Broken missions. Malfunctioning servers. Bandwidth issues. Anything that prevents a player from, well, playing. That's the first step.
Next, developers need to analyze what players enjoy and what they don't. In a successful closed beta, the developer responds to community concerns to everyone's satisfaction. By the time open beta rolls around, everyone is loving the game. By the way, the surest way of noting this is the CCU: if the CCU is stable, then you know people are enjoying themselves (they keep coming back). But if the CCU falls by 10%+ each session – there's a big problem.
Open beta is for shaking out bugs, to a very small degree, but this is really when the game is public for the first time. And a developer needs the game essentially to be finished. Most likely, the game has already gone gold. A successful open beta means that the internet is buzzing and pre-orders are jumping significantly (in the tens of thousands, at least).
...
How do you think the beta process has evolved in the last year or two?
Bugs in open beta are simply not acceptable. It used to be that games could launch in a somewhat rough state; now, customers expect the same level of execution of a console game (or near about).
I don't know if this has really changed over the years, but customers also don't wait to see where the game grows – what gets added or not (I should say reviewers fall into this trap also). Essentially, a player evaluates the game immediately and chooses whether or not he likes it.
So, the game was supposed be released more than 6 months ago, but it just now hitting open beta. For most games, the game is pretty much done when beta is opened up because open betas are generally used for marketing purposes at this point . In order for that marketing effort to be successful, the game needs to be polished enough to be acceptable to the general audience. If it's not, you'll see outcry and the game will receive negative attention (much like is happening with Mortal Online).
"It's in beta" is not a valid excuse at this point in the process. It is early on, when the game is closed, but not this late in the game. if this were closed beta or if the game was several months from being launched, it might be a good excuse. When the game is supposed to be launched within a few weeks? No. Shit's supposed to be done now. I've worked on several professional software development projects. If, on any one of those projects, we were in the UAT (User Acceptance Testing) phase (which is essentially what open beta is) after the application has already been through QA,major bug fixes, etc... and there was this much outcry from the users, there would be very serious consequences.
So some people have managed to hack the game and take control of the insta-kill, teleport-in guards. I would agree. However, I think that we cannot complain about bugs in a game while it is in any stage of testing, including "Open Beta". For example, I bought WAR to get into the Open Beta which they claimed was simply to stress test the game and that it had already been completed. When I logged into the beta I was shocked and amazed as to how shitty the game was, but I figured that they were still working some things out or whatever. I reported the bugs that I found and hoped that I didn't just get shafted and that there was a big update for the retail release. Well, we all know ho the WAR release went and I bitched and moaned about it- after it's retail release.
Now, there are certain things that are unfixable in an open beta. The graphics suck, core elements of the engine are broken, everytime I open a window the game bluescreens my comp, are examples of things that probably can't be easily solved. (These are general examples and have nothing to do with MO) However, security holes that nobody in closed beta thought of, like hacking a npc guard and wreaking havoc on the player populace, can be fixed. Bugged quests can be modified. Respawn timers adjusted, etc. What the OP was basing the quality of this game on is a very strange and awful bug, but a bug nonetheless that can be fixed before people start buying it in droves.
My point is that if you are willing to take part in any form of development, whether you are coding or playing an open beta, you need to be of the mindset that you are helping the process of creating a product. All the OP wanted to do was to damage the games reputation before it was actually released and that is not the goal of an open beta; putting out a better quality product is.

*looks into Crystal Ball ...we will still be arguing over this 6 more months from now...
I hope not.
I really want this game to succeed as I've stated before as I feel the genre needs more sandbox type games. It's going to be the indy developers like SV, and Icarus(Fallen Earth) that move us away from the theme park trend. The problem is, if the worlds they release are broken, it's not going to draw people away like it would if it were more polished. I don't expect perfection as no game is perfect, but working without serious flaws is something I do expect and MO is not there yet.
I'm hoping the miracle patch on the 22nd proves me wrong, and I know many others do too as this game has tonnes of potential but the devs need to tighten up and get it done. It's crunch time and there are a lot of eyes on them in this open beta and so far I would have to say the overwhelming response is that it is not in satisfactory condition.
I would also surmise that a good majority of people here commenting on the condition of the game are not haters, but people that want the game to succeed as well. I see no blind hatred posts, but posts commenting on what is broken, and what needs fixed because the players care. They want this to succeed.
Many of us have seen many failed or poor launches and we are just giving our input instead of the rose colored version hoping the devs listen to us and get MO in order so it can be the hit it has the potential to be.

There have been reports of players who are able to hack or exploit the guard system in various towns this weekend.
StarVault is aware of this issue and looking into it.
If you have experienced this, or any other hack, please report this in game to a GM. Alternatively you can send a PM to Maerlyn. You should try and provide the name of the person suspected of hacking, the in-game location and the time it occured (remember to specifiy your time zone).

If you have experienced this, or any other hack, please report this in game to a GM. Alternatively you can send a PM to Maerlyn. You should try and provide the name of the person suspected of hacking, the in-game location and the time it occured (remember to specifiy your time zone). Please do not post the names of the individuals involved on the public forum. Making threads about players you have seen hacking in game is NOT the correct way to report this, please use the methods described above. Thank you. http://www.mortalonline.com/forums/34378-hacking-exploiting-weekend.html I really shouldn't be trying to get this back on topic... but since I didn't see a link to this I figured people would like to READ about it.
This isn't the first time this has happened!!! SV was aware of this BEFORE it happened in OB. What don't you get?

Have no fear. It will be fixed on the 22nd. All is well. BTW today's patch was delayed until tomorrow so it could be perfected. This is good news! As they say "A dream is a wish the heart makes..." so if we all pull together and think positive thoughts it can't help but insure that the 22nd is as wonderful as we all hope!

Actually that would be Cinderella so it's the Fairy Godmother... but Tink and Dorothy are welcome to lend their magic as well! Just think positive thoughts.. enough with the negativity! The 22nd is the day we have long awaited and it's finally coming.

That's why it's not released yet! Trust in StarVault. They have been working on all the fixes for a long time. Miracle Patch on the 22nd will fix everything. You will be amazed!
Sure, holding my breath

Massively Article - Developer Round Table: MMO Betas
From that article:
What defines a successful MMO beta?

Please do not post the names of the individuals involved on the public forum. Making threads about players you have seen hacking in game is NOT the correct way to report this, please use the methods described above.
Thank you.

I really shouldn't be trying to get this back on topic... but since I didn't see a link to this I figured people would like to READ about it.
This isn't the first time this has happened!!! SV was aware of this BEFORE it happened in OB. What don't you get?
I win!!! LOL@U
