If you heard that a mmo was about to release without an open beta and that it cost 1 billion to make, would you buy it to try it out? Lets pretend that you knew for a fact it cost 1 billion to develop and it was not some cheesy marketing ploy. It costs $99, comes with 3 months of free game play, and is a fantasy RPG, and that's all you know.
Would you buy it? Yes or No, and why?

This is one of the dumbest hypothetical questions I've ever read on here.
Pay hundred bucks for a game I know nothing about?
So your answer is no I take?
Do you really expect a yes from someone?
Not no but HELL NO
Assassin's like to do it in the dark and from behind.
to be honest, with a billion dollars in development, id consider-- even without knowing anything else. at least id be interested.
I can only imagine the $100 monthly fee+item mall business model.
If it was a hamburger named Daikatana, whynot?
voov thinkabout the possibilities,Daikatana hamburger ,and Romero says its good too!for your teeth!
Generation P
a fantasy mmo, so pretty much the company spent 1 billion dollars to make a game when there are already a thousand other mmos like it, i dont think so, no game is worth 100 dollars
MMOs played: Too many
Watch List: FFXIV, CoH:GR, GW2, SWTOR, TERA, Earthrise
Do you really expect a yes from someone?
well that's why I'm asking the question. I mean with all the underfunded, released too soon, mmo's that have come out I was wondering if people would blindly buy a game that they knew cost a billion dollars to develop. It's not a stupid question, it's just a question.
You said no, but you did not say why?
Ah, the shame that no one will understand this reference. I had a good laugh, though.
Money spent may not mean a fun game for me.
It could be very polished, but if it's Lineage 2 or Aion where you grind for ages and ages for a level, I would not enjoy it at all.
Very unlikely hypothetical situation, so I'll say yes just to f up the mainstream. And kudos for have a billion dollar budget and spending zero of it on marketing!
well the reason games have grind is because grind is cheap to program. If someone spent a billion dollars on one game, I think we could assume it would not have grind.
lol, I hear ya, but you would not have to spend a dime on marketing as your release would be front page news. This post is not about if a game company would take this risk, it's about how you would respond as a consumer if they did.
No, just because it's fantasy.
i would never pay that for a fantasy mmo. but thats just my taste. i could have paid that for World of Darkness if its done right or maybe a pure Cyberpunk game set in the Ghost in the Shell/Cyberpunk 2020 world with an very adult theme.
To have an account just made and the only 2 posts made in this thread and being the OP, I think you either have some rumor you want to discuss or felt like asking which I find rather odd.
So if you tell us something about it we wouldn't have to answer the question. We can decide from the information you gave us.
That being said I would think it would be rather/if not impossible to make a billion dollar MMO and no one knows nothing about it with todays oceans of information.
But in a hypothetical situation, yes I would try it, why, because I give ever game the benefit of the doubt until I play it. If people were inclined to invest all that money into an MMO it better be good, plus $100 gives me a good reason to bitch if it sucked ass.
I would play, provided;
Multiple screenshots are made public
Information released as to type of character development (skill based, lvl based etc)
Some in game videos are released
Other statistical information is released
Even if the game was 30 bucks and gave 3 months free I wouldnt buy it with NO information.
It could be a waste of 30 bucks
Understandable
Question is simple. Even with no information about it, someone will buy it the day it come and the video will be online within a day or two. Have a quick look, see how it is and decide from there.
Yes, because I can handle 99 bucks, and then I can come here and whine about it. The problem with Daikatana is that it took too long and at some point, I forgot that it exists. So, yes if the server is up today.
If it was normal priced, I'd almost certainly buy it simply to see how they spent the money.
At double price, it's a stretch. If the game sounded like it was focused on fun gameplay I'd certainly pick it up. But a billion dollar double-price game based on bad gameplay formulas isn't gonna be fun.

No, not for just one billion. If it was a 100 billion then I certainly would but one billion is simply too low to expect that type of price.
>_>

1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
Daikatana MMO!!
Yeah... no.
I wouldn't get anywhere NEAR it. Any game that cost that much to make is obviously a corporate money-grab.....I prefer games made by gamers....who create games that they want to play.
Any time I get anywhere near a large-budget game, I'm disgusted and disappointed.
Fucking mass-market, pop-culture trash.
