Eve is a no level, socialization-oriented.
Without a corp, you enjoy only 20% of game potentiality
Removing leveling really won't do anything to improve socialization. The real causes of decline of socialization in modern MMO's is the lack of game play mechanics that encourage a player to do so.
Quest driven progression (and an MMORPG will always have progression) based on soloable content is a huge hinderance to players learning to play together.
Lack of downtime between combat scenearios kills socialization.
Offline crafting or lack of meaningful crafting removes opportunities to socialize.
Cross server dungeons and instances prevents a sense of community from building, especially if players can't interact with those other servers in other situations outside of combat. (Free movement of players between servers could solve this, sort of like how DAOC did it when they first clustered their servers into pods of 3 or so)
Lack of common areas to congregate like SWG used to have such as cantinas'a and what not kills player interaction.
Not strongly rewarding group based content while keeping it simple enough that even a PUG can do it kills socialization.
If Secret World doesn't incorporate much of what I listed above, it will be no better than WOW in terms of player interaction and you certainly can't call it a huge success.
One other thing to consider, does the majority of the MMORPG player base even want more socialization? While I certainly miss it I'm an old fool with rose colored glasses on (according to some) about the 'good old days' of MMORPG's.

Funcom did push the envelope as to what players will put up with, there really is no reason to argue back and forth about it.
Despite the fact that AoC in its current form is arguable one of the better MMOs currently available, Funcoms hype and promised features (which did not make it into launch) alienated 100s of thousands of people who bought the game, resulting in very poor subscription retention and damaging the game in the long run due to word of mouth and a bad reputation. To this day AoC probably has a lot less subscriptions than the game in its current form deserves, simply because of what happened during the first 3-6 months of the game going live.
Is it then logical to asume Funcom would make the same mistakes with The Secret World?
To me its quite the opposite. AoC's problems at launch destroyed Funcom stock and cost the company lots and lots of money. Why on earth would they repeat that experience now that they know better than most (bar SoE perhaps ^^) what happens if you release an unfinished product.
I expect their new mmo to be as polished as it can possible be when it launches. To not advertise anything on the box, that isnt in fact in game at launch. I also expect all the games key elements to be throroughly worked through, and that they have implemented atleast a month or 2 worth of end game content at launch. AoC surely taught them that players reach that stage earlier than developers expect, and that they need content to stick around.
If they replay the launch of AoC with TSW then I dont think you can argue around the fact that Funcom are thoroughly devoted to being idiots.
People really need to get over the bad launch of AoC.
They have fixed the game, Its good now.
I am looking forward to TSW and nothing about AoC puts me off. If people actually tried AoC rather than jumped on the hate train they might like the game.
AoC fixed? We should ask the players who still complain about "INSTANCED" seige crash still being there after such a long time.
Nothing can be good if its done by FailCom. Ok lets be fair after 2+ years i could be good ...
AoC was such a dissapoint. You simply cant get over if you think how good it could have beend if ...
PS : I dont think FailCom learned anything through AoC launch as they did exact same mistakes they did at AO launch. Dejavu.
No comment on the quality of the game which could be great or terrible. At this point who knows? But on the subject of socialization; In an interview the combat was described as 'fast paced', fast paced combat really isn't conducive to conversation.
You want socialization in any game just get into a guild and get on vent. Then you'll have all the talking you could ever want. Soon you'll be wondering how to get people to shut the hell up. Next thing you know you're leaving vent off and playing alts just to get away from all the chatter.
People really need to get over the bad launch of AoC.
They have fixed the game, Its good now.
I am looking forward to TSW and nothing about AoC puts me off. If people actually tried AoC rather than jumped on the hate train they might like the game.
Get over the fact that a company lied to everybody about half of the features in the game to make money? If they advertised a new car that got 100 miles to the gallon and everybody bought one, and itonly got 30 miles to the gallon, do you think people would be, oh well, give them a chance. Hell no.
I swear funcom has people on these forums doing crowd controll to improve their public image. You post anything negative about funcom and bam, not even a minute later all of the 'praise funcom' psycho's are out in full force saying its a great game, play it now, the servers arnt dead! DX10 works greaaatatt, give them more money so we can mabey get some of the original planned features that havnt made it out in the past 2 years sometime in the next two.
Warning, paranoia alert....
But seriously, if people are enthusiastic about what they've seen so far about TSW, let them enjoy that.
I agree that a healthy dose of skepticism can prevent too high expectations and disappointments, but people holding on to their grudge and hatred for years and years - for a SWG, for a AoC, you name it - borders on the ridiculous. They didn't f**k your girlfriend or your wife - or husband - while you were away from home, so get over it.
Besides that, it's still a long time before TSW will even start to get into beta, so we'll see how it will shape up. What they've shown so far they're aiming for a risky road with TSW, but a promising one. At least it'll be different and a much needed breath of fresh air in the MMO field.

I have fallen victim to, and been subsequently burnt by, hype only twice in my life. Once was when The Phantom Menace came out, the other was the release of Warhammer. These two massive disappointments have taught me to take everything with a grain of salt, feel yourself getting too excited, just think back to "So Master Qui-Gonn what are midichlorians?" or to Marc Jacobs saying... well anything really.
So even though I am excited by TSW and look forward to Ragnar and his crew making a great MMO I still know that there are a multitude of things that can go wrong. I think they will make a great game and that is all I can hope for. I just have a sense that this MMO will find it's niche very early and will have quite a good retention rate. But it really is all up to the Funcom guys to make sure they get it right.
I honestly don't think the genre in general can take too many AAA failures - gogo TSW and SW:TOR for success.
I wish people quit comparing apples to oranges. AoC's launch to AO launch. AoC was nowhere nearly that bad technically. It had a completely different set of problems. AoC and TSW cannot be directly compared. Not the same team behind them. AoC is a franchise-spawn, and marketing would have had a completely different expectations and strategies for it. TSW is unique, and marketing strategies so far have been unique and highly successful.
Funcom takes risks associated with pioneering and innovation. Yes, they could be developing WoW clones like everybody else. Or are they AION clones nowadays? Whatever.
TSW will be huge hit for the same reasons "Harry Potter" and "Lost" are huge hits. It is set in a modern setting, it borrows from many favorite sources and settings, it does not try to be all things to all people but rather builds a loyal following of enthusiasts. They have the best bubbling-brook forums with some of the smartest discussions I have seen, and the game isn't even out yet.
Among a swarm of faceless high-fantasy games and franchise-spawned properties like STO and SWTOR, TSW is without competition. The only thing that could threaten it would be if "Harry Potter" franchise wanted an MMO, or if another modern-day urban fantasy/alternate-reality MMO popped up.
I have to jumpin and say as alot of other conan players do, "yes the launch sucked" But holy crap people can anyone give this game an honest try now? Conan is one of the better MMO's these days, stop beating it up and realize although it took a while it is very good now, and im 39yrs old, tons of MMO experience. so i'm giving it to you straight. Stop hating, buy a time card if you dont wanna give them your CC, and give it an honest 2nd run through. im actually glad i never quit conan, for a long time i was able to play with out all the jackass to deal with, im glad they quit, but the subs are growing you can tell by server activity, i don't need stats to prove it. Just try it.
I'm glad you and others are excited about this games development but I don't see anything you suggest pointing to this game being a giant success, well if we consider that we don't know how any of these features you tout will work in any way at all. there were games before this that didn't have levels they did not succeed there have been games that have been a bit more social friendly and none of those have been smashing successes either, implimentation is the key here how ae things done in the game nothing more nothing less. It might be a great game for all 6 of you that play it.
To the OP: This game won't be huge sorry. It's made by a second rate game developer, possibly even 3rd rate. I bet you were one of the ones that said Champions and STO would be huge too huh??
Ouch that hurts... I actually bought a lifetime subscription to Champions online and still play it happily. But by the same token I suppose I couldn't honestly argue that it was a huge game. But that aside Im not sure its really fair at all to compare Secret World to Champions Online.
Two very different developers and two very different approaches to the game. I love some of the things that Champions did and I look forward to seeing how no levels work on Secret World. Its a concept that has gotten thrown around a lot in MMOs and on console games over the years. To see it done, and hopefully done well, would be a refreshing bit of innovation to the gaming world. In my opinion MMOs are almost moving away from the massively multiplayer aspect.
Im going to talk about WoW, not cause I play it or even like it a whole lot but because [despite the current sales plateu] it is a sucessful MMO that isn't hard to level in. Still, to level effectively in that game you need to use something like Joana's Guide. Which is generally done solo. As the original poster said it has become a race to the top. Im not saying this is true of all games but I've seen something similar happening to at least a noticable percent of the player base in all the MMOs I've played.
Anyways, WoW and other games aside Secret World is trying some interesting fairly new ideas and hyping it up a lot. I feel a lot of people will get let down but if you try to remember that its just another game this might be a niche that some people can fill for long enough for them to make something of a profit on this game. It could turn out being something interesting or even great. But at this point only time can really tell that.
WoW has one of the worst communities there is. If that's the future of MMO communities then the MMO market is in a sorry state.
Tbh, I'm hoping that all AoC and Funcom haters will ignore TSW and all others that aren't able to give a MMO credit that it has changed positively or that a company can learn from its mistakes, because that would mean that there are a lot less immature people around ingame when TSW goes live. And I'm glad that all these whiners from the first few months after AoC launch left and stayed gone. F**k off and good riddance, if you can only whine and whine and whine and only see the bad of the MMO's you played. I played a Champions Online and the few months I had played it I had fun and could enjoy it for what it is. The same for AoC now, it is a good solid MMO now, with a good community and overall a good gaming experience.
And yes, I'm also not a 'Funcom mole', and next to AoC I play other MMO's from time to time too, and I can enjoy those for another sort of gaming experience as well.

No Bro I'm Just a Gamer, a Everyday Joe with Gaming as my fun time. I dont know what the sub base is, wether it be 6 or in the millions, i dont know, and i dont care, your right to me it is fun, but i'm the older in the scene, i'm 40 and there are plenty of players older than me. I have played thousands of dallors and endless hours on MMO's in my lifetime, im sure plenty of players can relate to this, I got sucked into the lifetime sub oc CO, because in the beginning it was new and fun, combat was different and pretty cool, etc. But it got OLD really quick and power balance is way off, so leson learned, ill never lifetime into anything again. But i know when to bail out of a game and when not to, i stuck in conan, besides having a beefed up master account, and rode the ride since the begining of beta, i agree it sucked in the begining, but now its improved to a game worth playing. I'm just saying, the bashing is based on the launch, get over it, you cant live your life in the past, it isnt going to change! Look to the future! And hope someone comes out with a WOW killer, we really need one. Today has some good games, nothing "awesome" but some better over others, but all the same with new skins. This is probably going to make you crap your pants but i still play "city of heros" it may be old but its still good, looking forwad to Going RougeI play mainly once a week night with a supergroup i have been in since beta so i guess the social aspect is there for that too.

Have you ever played EQ?
Most social game I ever played, there was no solo content, it was just for groups.
I am still looking for a game like that.
