I just watched my friend play Mortal for an Hour...

jiveturkey12jiveturkey12 Member CommonPosts: 1,262

In that time this is what transpired,

A guy came up to my friend and said he'd pay him a silver or two to give some items to a friend of his. My friend accepted the man's money, and the items and gave them to the guy that needed them about 5 minutes later.

It was the dead of night so my friend used the money to buy a torch so he could see in the darkness, he had to manually split up the money he recieved from the guy and give the vendor the appropriate amount.

Then some huge guy in crazy armor named "Wargasm" pushed my friend, and then said quiet plainly to him,

"Cock!"

In which my friend replied to him "Is that what your eating for dinner?"

To which a nearby grouped laughed at Wargasm and then left. Afterwords my friend went out into the fields to kill a boar and ended up getting his ass handed to him in the matter of seconds, it turned out it was a named Boar with huge tusks and scales.

So now he had to travel to a priest in the ghost world form, once he arrived and was rezzed, it was daylight again.

As he walked through this open mountain range suddenly something hit him, in real life he freaked out and went

"What the hell was that?" right as he got hit again. Looking over his shoulder at the game I saw an arrow fly past his characters head, I told him to get, and he did. He made it into a small forest and began resting. As he rested his skill in resting also went up.

A guy in what looked like leather armor came up to him and asked him about his wounds, RPing he told the lether armor guy that he was simply fighting boars and that they were tougher than he thought. The man said a few more things about the area that he came from and his home town and then left.

After that my friend procceded back into the open mountain range, where he saw a man on horseback and two other noobies like my friend in front of him. My friend sprinted towards them and caught what the horse rider was saying.

"Alright everyone listen up, there is a couple of bandits in the mountains over there killing anyone that goes by, if you want to live, follow me."

The two other noobies didnt listen or if they did didnt care and went through the mountains, luckily with the amazing view distance in game, we saw them both get shot down right after going by the bandits (Two other players) camp atop the mountain.

My friend went with the horserider and made his way to an open valley. There he thanks the rider and started on the boars again. This time he had learned from his past mistakes and used heavy swings (Holding down the click) and stab attacks (Alt-Click) to kill them.

Also the time spent going through the mountains and the terrain had raised his endurance enough(Or whatever attribute has to do with fatigue) and he didnt run out of fatigue this time chasing down the boars. He killed three and got some leather to use with crafting and then was booted for the new patch.

- I just thought I would share this with everyone because to me it means alot. Me and my friend have not been following this game, we have no expectations. But in the hour I watched him play I had a ton of stories and events to tell people that happened. To me that makes a good game and a good world. Alot of people say the first thirty minutes sucks and my friend had a hard time as well for the first bit, but after he gained a few skill points and learned from his mistakes he got to some awesome fights and moments. -

Yes my friend just signed me up, for free.

All you do is go on the site and download the client. But make sure you read some of the forums, theres bugs with the patcher right now.

Also I know everyone hates Mortal Online on these forums, I just thought maybe some people would like to hear a few intresting events that transpired in game. If for a laugh, or whatever.

Funny story OP cause I played the game for 1 hour and this is what happened:

10 minutes trying to figure out where I am, what the controls are and what I need to be doing to get anywhere.

Another 10 minutes was spent chopping wood and mining stone because there is no other thing to do for a new player (or atleast not that I could figure out in the first 15 minutes of trying to figure out what to do).

After the 15 minutes of mining/copping wood I got bored and tried to see if I can sell the stuff I have gathered. Spent 10 minutes trying to find an NPC that would buy it from me but no luck.

So then I spent another 10 minutes to try and find some NPCs to kill. Couldn't find any so I got bored and attacked some random guy. He yelled guards which teleported to me (out of nowhere) and instakilled me. Spent about 5 minutes as ghost trying to find a healer to ressurect me. Couldnt find any so I logged of.

This sound fun to anyone? I mean I am all for sandbox games but sandbox is not an excuse for not having a good tutorial or not having enough content, like NPCs to kill. Heck UO had animals you could kill just outside of town yet 10 minutes of running around the outskirts of a town and I couldnt find one single NPC.

    Game is just unfinished, period.

I got an idea... let's hijack this thread which was nothing more than a pleasent little story about the OP enjoying himself, and use it as an oppurtunity to bash the mods for no apparant reason.

...why am I not surprised your account got suspended? Somehow I don't think it has anything to do with your opinions about a particular game... I'm mean obviously noone has banned Yamota for his upteeth-thousanth post about how noone is entitled to enjoy anything he doesn't (which is apparantly everything) so they ca't be THAT overzealous can they?

OP: That sounds like a beutiful evening. Makes me wish I still had friends who where into gaming.

    Active: WoW

    Semi-retired: STO

Fully retired: UO, EQ, AC, SWG, FFXI, DDO:EU, PoTBS, AoC, EvE

Tried: EQ2, Tabula Rasa, Auto-Assault, Isteria, LotRO, Wizard 101

    Looking forward to: Star Citizen

The funny thing about this story, is that you can do basically the same thing in any MMO because you're not using any of the TOOLS of the game, you're just talking and making up your own story.

I didn't realize my imagination was a feature of MO.

  • KrewelKrewel Member Posts: 390

Sounds to me both the OP and his friends never played an MMO before. An event like that is nothing special, it can occur in any MMO, including WoW. First day in the latter game I had much better adventures, second day I even went into my first dungeon, etc.

Why this would be an indication that MO is a good game... that is beyond me, really.

Apparently some people think that not being told where to go and what to do is fun. Creating your own adventure.

Yeah I could do the exact same thing on a PvP server in WoW if I didn't pick up a single quest and instead just ran around doing whatever.. just playing.

Actually if WoW was anything like MO you wouldn't do much of anything. You would be too worried about losing your precious purples to leave town.

Im not saying I didnt have awesome moments in WoW, or SWG. But lately MMO's just havent been sparking my imagination, I mean ive played LOTRO, Allods (Which in case someone skims through my posts, I retract my enjoyment on that game because of the community), EQ2, and others but none of them gave me any sense of Danger, Conflict, or Progression.

    Danger ,

Thats what I think was cool about all these little stories is that to each one of them or most of them, there was a sense of constant action evolving around my friend. There were stories branching off my friends actions and people with their own emotions, intentions or what not around him that were unknown.

I mean in WoW or Lotro you basically can look and know what someones doing, "O they are farming murlocs for that quest" or "O look 40 horde, they are about to go kill the king of stormwind", but see the thing is, the game sets all those things up for you.

Why are they farming murlocs? Because they need them for a quest.

Why are they killing the king? For an acheivement

See what I mean? It makes it alot more personal to me when I see a couple of people shooting at you from atop a mountain or riding across the plains on a horse, because they have the direction of the game.

Call me a sandbox nut but to me it just adds to the immersion when its the players making the choices about the game world and not just the developers.

    It sounds really fun OP.

And to anyone claiming something similar could happen in WoW! Get a life.

First of a arrow could never go right pass your head and scare you in WoW, secondly you have a radar showing most stuff.....and if you got killed you would not drop any loot.

So you watched your friend playing, you did not actually play it yourself?  Try to play for a few hours in the bugged darkness where you cant see 1 foot in front of you, tell me if you have fun after that

I smell a viral marketer (could be mistaken, but...)

Look, when I real descriptions like the Op's OR look at the "Features list" - Sounds awesome. Just what I want in a game.

-Then, I download and "play" (try to) this abomination and its a buggy, unfinished, unplayable mess. Anyhow, nice try. Your description actually sounds fun but my time spent in MO was a nightmare. I love "hardcore Sandbox games" I wanted this to work... It does not work.

So yeah, you can talk about all the nifty ideals and features and such and make me drool- I played the beta and its nothing like you describe. Its 3 days of making the patcher work, crash every 5-10 minites, lose your skillbooks/items to crashes, poor unoptimized hit detection , lag city, half finished"features" (or non existing ones) animals floating in the air, etc. etc. etc.

    Nice try though. =P

The game is in beta.  It isn't ready.  But even in its unfinished and unpolished state it's a more interesting game than almost every other one on the market.

MO and Darkfall are the only games that have tried ANYTHING different in years.

I don't see any developer or investor of this game touting it as complete and ready for launch.  If they felt it was they would release it.  IF they can get the features working as intended (for the most part) and sort out the sync and lag issues, the game will almost immediately become one of the most unique and interesting on the market.

I'll take 50% of the freedom MO offers as opposed to a fully-functioning WoW, AoC, or WAR.

If they can make it 6 more months I think this game will be fantastic.

    Tecmo Bowl.

You'd take 50% of what MO is now?

I have that game. It's played on a tabletop with paper and a pen. Lots of freedom.

Ofcourse "almost" everyone hates Mortal Online on this forum. Since 70 % of the people here are from the states. And Darkfall is made in America and Mortal online in Sweden. Which makes them rivals and also the fact they are the 2 games that are closest to eachother when it comes to gameplay and type of game.

I never listen to what people say, I try it for myself and form my own opinion. And so should you too, everyone should.

I think you should listen more my friend, Darkfall is made in Greece.......

If you check my previous posts on MO you will see I have been less than full of praise for both the game and the people behind it, however, and its a fairly large almost eating hat however, logged in last night to see the so called patch, and was suprised.

I say suprised in that visualy there has been improvements,  combat felt more connected, synching issues for me were all but gone, and there were lots of people all busy doing stuff, the area I was in felt well alive.

Its still got a ways to go, but for the first time I got to actually play just about as intended and I can now start to see what this game intends to be, in a more revealing light..Oh it is sooo not going to be everyones cup of tea, in fact a lot of people just arnt going to get it at all, like my son with EvE.

So I have now changed my stance from WTF what a mess, to intrigued...

Last nights downsides were 1 Nowgame.exe crash and being bitten for 6 damage on the leg by a small fluffy rabbit, it was embarressing.

Oh and ambiant lighting increase at night has helped a bit, you can see better, as in not in a coal mine better.

I agree that i had the exact same experience, but it is not totally fair to blame a game for not being able to mimmick WOW game play or controls.I heard the same nonsense when i played FFXI,and it took me like one total day to figure it out and the controls became the best i have ever had in any game.I also believe in first impressions and MO also left me wit ha bad one,but i guess if you are totally open and willing to stick it out for a day or so,i could wear on you.

The reason i could not stick it out was the same old static npc's and empty city i started at.It looked like the developer spent little effort with putting content into the world,at least the vanilla content.I know there is more content ,i have heard people talk about it,but really ALL games SHOULD start off the player experience in an EPIC way.

Example, when you start into the Vanguard world ,it is full of action, warring factions, you need to escape your slavery, that gives an epic feel to a game and gets the player right into the action.MO starts off extremely quiet and nothing epic about it,so it makes it hard to stick it out for more than the hour or two most of us did.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

very nice story. you said it plainly and still it was pleasant to read. this felt really like rpg game. but games like this need rpg community to reach fullest potential. i am not rpger myself, but i think i could become one for MO

    Playing: Rohan
Played (from best to worst): Shadowbane, Guild Wars, Shayia, Age of Conan, Warhammer, Runes of Magic, Rappelz, Archlord, Knight online, King of Kings, Kal online, Last chaos

"Apparently some people think that not being told where to go and what to do is fun. Creating your own adventure."

That's what sandbox game are for, aren't they?

EDIT: the inverse idea of your post, "Apparently some people think that being told where to go and what to do is fun. Experiencing someone else's adventure."
