Curious EVE is last on that (meaningless) list. Curious, since the mmorpg.com editors voted en mass for that game as game of the year. Out of touch lately editors ?
There's really no point in trying to put reason to a list. MMORPGs are all opinions anyway. All I can say is sit down, experiment, and find something you enjoy. No sense trying to "Defend" it.
I don't know what it is about people and their MMORPGs. You say something bad about it and it's as if you insulted their honor. Vote for EVE, say why you like it, but trying to make sense why it isn't higher on the popularity list is pointless =P

(1) DAOC was the poster-child of RvR (and probably still is). Three realms (with multitudes of unique races and classes) all fighting for control over various objectives (BGs, Frontiers, Keeps, the list goes on). The most fun I've ever had was running around with a good group saying "Ok, we killed all the Albs, lets go see if the Hibs are out." Then we'd go stomp some Hibbie faces into the dirt. Solo-stealthing around BGs was also loads of fun. I would specialize in a single weapon (instead of main weapon and off-hand weapon), and I would use a Two-hand axe. The advantage is when I pull off my sneak attack, the additional damage from the two-hand weapon would pretty much obliterate the enemy in one shot. The disadvantage was the looooong delay before my next swing. So if I didn't kill the enemy with the first swing, chances are I would end up running away. Man did it feel good to sneak around for 30 minutes, then finally sneak up on an unsuspecting squishy and slaughter 'em in one hit (they didn't see it coming.. one second your grinding xp, then next your dead).
(2) The plethora of unique races and classes made me feel unique in the game-world. One of my favorite aspects of any MMO is creating and building a character that is unique and fits my style of gameplay.
edit: and my style of gameplay is being the class I want to be and choose the weapons and armor that I want to wield. For instance, I was a stealther with a two-hand axe (compared to most of today's cookie-cutter themes where a stealther dual-wields daggers..... I WANT TO BE A THEIF WITH TWO-HAND AXE DAMNIT!)

I voted WoW because everything else on your list sucks honestly.
My fav game was Asheron's Call 2. I know a lot of people cluck about it on here but I really liked it. I was willing to wait for the fixes to the game's problems but they pulled the plug instead. A shame really as it was a very fun game to play.
Never violate a woman, nor harm a child. Do not lie, cheat or steal. These things are for lesser men. Protect the weak against the evil strong. And never allow thoughts of gain to lead you into the pursuit of evil. Never back away from an enemy. Either fight or surrender. It is not enough to say I will not be evil. EVE. The first day I played it, I knew this was the game I had been waiting for all these years. I've hardly played anything else since. I'm doubly fortunate that it's still expanding and still being actively developed. I think it's Golden Age will begin when the Incarna expansion is released.

Yea i have to agree with you on that, even though i played SWG also , but yea Eve on and Off since 2003
It was the only game I have ever pleayed consistantly for a long period of time and not bored.
It was the only game I ever maxed out a character
It was the only game I looked forward to running around and doing mundane things like hunting and shopping for items.
It was the only game I actually did things that were not to gain levels / xp in.
I recall one 4th of July that some friends and I went out on an island in Naboo ( before housing was in ) and camped and had a fishing contest to see who could catch the biggest fish. We then drank Jawa Beer and launched fireworks.
None of that gained me any xp. It was not done for a quest. There was no reward for the fishing. We did not get any phat lewtz or drops.
The fact that we camped out on Naboo on the 4th of July and drank beer and launched fireworks was the PEAK of geek that I can not obtain in any other game.
Say hello, To the things you've left behind. They are more a part of your life now that you can't touch them.
Well, if you really did want to know what are people's favourite MMORPGs of all time, you should have added other as an option to the poll as well, because while yes, I would agree that those MMOs on the list you provided are considered among the best by the mainstream population, there are some gamers who's favourite game would not be on that list, since there are so any other games on the market.
That being said, my favourite game on that list would be EVE Online. I admit that I am rather sick of the typical fantasy set up, and EVE Online was like a breath of fresh air for me. I absolutely loved the setting, the music, and the skill system, and the fact that you could specialise in pretty much everything on just one character. The community was really nice as well, there were a lot of helpful people who were actually willing to give you a few isks in order to let you have a better ship or something. I would still be playing EVE to this day if my computer could handle the graphics after the expansion.
However, my favourite game of all time would still be Guild Wars, which is not really considered an MMORPG by some people. I love the emphasis on storyline, the variety of classes (and the ability to multi-class), and the fact that you could change your attributes anytime you liked to fit the occasion. I know that the huge amount of instancing was a put off to some people, but I actually liked the game because of the instancing. If it weren't for the instancing, the storyline and the larger variety of quests would not have been able to come through.
“It's unwise to pay too much, but it's worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money - that's all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot - it can't be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.”
I had to vote for WOW. It was fun until BC came out and ruined it for me. Noting drew me in wanting to play alot more than WOW.

FFXI here.. There is just no other game that I could get into for a long period of time and i've tried just about all of them. And for an 8 year old game it still looks mighty fine with some registry tweaks.
I don't have a favorite MMORPG. I remain endlessly optimistic and endlessly disappointed. I know the future of gaming is going to involve something like what we're doing now, but every single mmorpg is repetitive and ultimately tedious. I've played pretty much all of the AAA titles since the mid-90's. What would fit the bill is a persistent skill progression *system* or basic framework, that allowed individual developers to make modules for people to play (I could be playing space cowboys one week and saving princesses the next etc with -- if not the exact same avatar in each one then at least allow me to mint a new avatar that reflected the cumulative skill level I had reached globally. PvP vs PvE, sandboxy vs themey, grindy vs. questy, respec vs. no respec etc would all be implemented at the module level. Laugh now, but I'm convinced this is the future of online games.
That said, i've played Wow, Rappelz and Eve (in descending order) the longest. I had the most fun in rappelz, but that's because of finding a good guild. Eve could be great, but you can't make it alone and corp life always turns into a second job.
So far, Diablo 2, hellgate and battlefield 2 are my favorite online games, but they're not massive. Give me something as endlessly fun to play, with more massiveness.
I can also roleplay the tower in a chess game and shout "is that a peasant at the horizon I see? I will smash it I will! Oh damn I broke one of my merlons!". -- maji
Can't believe I am saying this, but World of Warcraft gets my vote. How can it not, Blizzard delivered a great game that is far better than any other I have played to date. Sure there are a few things I wish Blizzard would do to make WoW better in my mind, but what they have delivered beats any other games currently on the market right now.
I voted Lineage 2, I love the style, backstory and the different slant on classic races, but best of all was the creation of a journey for your character that changed profoundly as you reached certain levels so you had the option to chose your own path. Oh! and of course the large scale and small scale PvP which added a sense of danger as you explored and battled the mad mobs that Oriental games seem to come up with.

Currently would have to be EVE. There is no other game with the depth and freedom of play on the market. NOTHING comes close.

For your sake i hope you meant pre cu and then the nge.
But hands down SWG before cu / nge, i would say it had the best community out there, i have to many great memories with that game.

Without a doubt...not even close for me.

WoW winning the poll? On this website?
Hell has finally frozen over lol.
Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP
You know, you should have two polls-
1 for the Best MMoRPG of all time.
1 for your favorite MMoRPG of all time.
Cause I know I'd vote for WoW as best and UO as my favorite.
Sorry but I don't see Guildwars in here so I geuss I can't vote ^^ .

Main characters:
Jinn Gone Quiet (Guild Wars)
Princess Pudding (Guild Wars)
City of heroes, where is that on the list? Along with LOTRO and guild wars
MMOs played: Too many
Watch List: FFXIV, CoH:GR, GW2, SWTOR, TERA, Earthrise
I am a bit surprised by the results so far.
