Thanks for the info. I'm going to get a razer naga and at least cut down on button presses a little maybe. Maybe that will help.

You are going to LOVE the Naga.

It has totally changed Darkfall for me.

I have button 1 mapped to equip my greatsword, and switch to my melee toolbar. Button two equips my staff, and switches to my utility / heal hotbar. Button 3 switches to archery, 4 to 1 handed sword and shield, 5 to my nukes, etc.

Between the fact that it's SO responsive, and I can sitch weapons and toolbars with one click...I can totally focus on teh combat, and pull off some maneuvers that simply weren't practical before.

Best gaming money I've spent in years.

Are you trolling? How can you click in this game at all? If you somehow attempted to click in DFO, you played it completely wrong and no wonder the game sucked for you.

Can we please stop..  its not trolling so drop it.  Dont highjack..

Glad your having a blast OP!

I'm thinking about trying, but the grind worries me a bit.

I don't expect the 'handed to me' thing people keeps talking about.  Its just that a.  I remember when it first came out hearing about all the macroing and some wall people would skillup on, letting them level up 24/7 for a long period in the game.  Now I know thats no longer possible (good thing, silly to have to do that), but that means it will take me how much grinding to catch up to these people?

Which, unlike eve, I have to do, because there is no specialization it seems like (so even though they are an awesome swordsman I can't be a competent archer and contribute, because mostlikely they are awesome archers too).  Although I did read someone's post about melee specializations and the limits it places on magic, which is a good thing.

Also,  is there non-pvp content?  Like in UO crafting and houses and cooking and trading etc attracted non pvp-ers.  Or is this something going to be fixed?

^Someone who will probably go put in his 1 dollar in a couple hours.

Playing: DO Trial, EVE 1 Day Buy a PLEX promo.
Played: UO, EQ, AC, GW, WoW, CoX, EQ2, AoC, WURM Online, Ryzom, Eve Online, FE Trial

The skill-grind is not an issue, and that's mainly what you need to catch up with other players. Stats will increases as you fight, harvest, run, etc. Once you have about 250 HP and at least a good skill tree (melee weapon with mastery, archery with mastery, high ranked elemental spells) you can be "competitive" in Sieges. This should usually take 2-3 months. As far as 1on1 goes, it might take a bit longer.

Also, DarkFall does have specialization. For exemple an archery specialization called Mage Killer will, while increasing the damage you deal to staff-wearing opponents by 20%, disable you from using all Elemental Types of magic. Melee also has similar specialization. Some specs, will also reduce your mana pool by 5% to 10% (and up to 20% if you specialize in both melee and archery)

DarkFall does feature crafting, housing, cooking, trading etc. But PvP cannot easily be avoided as it's part of the game.

I suggest you do try the Trial for 1$, I think it's the best way to find out if you like the game or not. Also feel free to ask questions in the Race Alliance chat if you need help, your questions will be answered fairly quickly.

Thanks.  I'm not worried about Avoiding pvp, I like that its part of it and like what it adds to the danger, economy, etc.  I just wanted to know if the game was ALL pvp, like a CoD with stats, or if there were other elements like crafting etc that were worthwhile.  Which you answered.  So yeah, it looks like I'll be trying it today, thanks a lot.  We'll see if the grind is doable, but if it is, could be fun.

The game has open world PvE and dungeons (no instances).  Mobs range from easy to hard.  The asy mobs will be harder than anything outside a raid boss in other games.  Also, the game does not tell you what is hard or easy, you must simply try it and find out.

There are a variety quests, with long quest lines you can do.

Sometime this year there is supposed to be a new "dungeon system" released.  We have no idea what that means but it is lcear the devs are working to enhance the PvE side of DFO as well.

remember to FOCUS your development.  It can be fun to dabble everywhere, but the more you do this the more you delay your entry into higher levels of PvP.  It is a skill game after all and unless you use your skills they do not increase.

This '2 months till useful in groups 4 months till able to survive 1v1.' What kind of play time are you guys talking about daily?

times are relative.  It is all about how efficient you are in skill gain.

I know a guy who played ~8 hrs a day (retired) and built a well developed end-game solo-pvp character in a month.

I know others who play causal and play as part of a team and join us no matter what we are doing and still contribute.  this is very dependent on who you play with, and how well you play to your strengths.  I view anyone with at least 1 mastery someone I don't need to babysit.  This can be done a couple hours a night in a few weeks for melee and even faster for archery.

    But....

I also twink newbs in my guild so that we get them viable faster.  We have an ADD kid who gets A LOT of kills against the top guys on the server in group fights.  He doesn't even have his mastery.  But we are pushing him to get his mastery and power-level him when we can.

Really, because I thought darkfall was a space based mmo where we fly around in ships, how could I have missed that.

Oh thats right, I didn't, I am pointing out how darkfalls "concept" is sucking, and your stating nothing.

Actually ships can and do fly in Darkfall! Seriously, check the youtube video on the hacker flying a ship he hijacked. Its too funny.

The Razer Naga changed the game for me. Made it much more fun. Easy macroing software comes with it. I love it. Darkfall is fun. I love it, but fight naked a lot because I'm tired of giving away gear.

I doubt I'm the average player. (I think I'm even more noobier). I get high off of the pve in this game. Yeah I know. Maybe it is just because I haven't played it enough. But this game is fun. If Pve is that much fun.... pvp on a better character must be more fun. The naga was worth the money just for making the game less aggravating and more fun. So even if it doesn't help with game skill, it does help with finger cramps and awkward hand positioning.

I played Lotro for 2 years. 6 months to 8 months of that was truly fun. This game seems more fun at the beginning than Lotro and the experience is so much more unpredictable. I like it.

However, I do believe a skill progression cap would assist them with getting more new players into the game. People worry about catching up. Numbers versus "old" players can help to catch up but it isn't the same. Cap the skills. Some of the older players will leave. More will replace them. The mmo game Darkfall will seem more viable to those thinking about getting into it. That is my opinion.

People want a chance eventually to win in a 1v1 situation. Darkfall isn't much worried about this. I'm not sure not being worried about this...is a good plan.

I bought the game. Even if nothing changed, for now, I'm enjoying it enough to pay for it. It will save my money by wasting my time. I guarantee it. That always happens.

While you're right here, the melee combt leaves alot to be desired. Don't talk darkfall melee is the best since sliced bread, which it is not.

Darkfall melee combat is the most challenging I have seen in  years.  To say otherwise means you haven't played it very long.

I hav enjoyed my time on DFO, but I left mostly because the  lack of individualization and the total useless melee face to the magic...

My question is, is still everyone blasting magic missile all around turning this fine mmo in one bad FPS? Or is melee of any use?

I dont think that I saw a MMO with more potential than DFO, except maybe SWG pre-NGE, I would love to see it doing well on the RPG field also...

Melee and Archery are very viable now. Magic now suffers from a Global Cooldown on all high ranked spells, while Melee and Archery received several specialization, allowing them to deal greater damage against staff-wielding opponents at the cost of losing their elemental magic. All armors made by Armorsmithing have also seen their Resistance greatly increased.

So far, there's still a lot of hybrid, but melee and archery are now viable options. Especially melee, if you are able to get close and personal on a Mage, chances are you will destroy him. Oh, knockback on certain types of magic was reduced a little too.

DFO has a huge grind, not only that, but they do very little to mask it.

You literally have to kill the same creatures over and over and over again with no purpose what-so-ever.

    I got sick of it.

I think this claim has been covered ad nauseum in enough threads on this site. Really, it's getting old.

Good to know,  may give a try on DFO again to see how the things are shaping now... I hated  those big battles of magic missiles... It was magic missile only, more like a ´hit-the-duck´ game... big blue balls coming and going... no really sensation of epic battle... I do enjoy ranged, but I like to be able to play ranged or melee any time... By the way very thanks for the info!!!

you'll find not that only REAL n00bs use mana missile at all.

If someone's gonna cast on you, it will be something that REALLY hurts now.
