i notice a lot of ppl putting AOC in that top 5. has it really gotten that much better i played at launch and for like 4 months after then i couldnt take it anymore and left. how did it go from horrible start to this? im not bashing, i honestly havent followed it. if its that good i might consider a return
I still think WoW offers the best game experience in the genre.
Every other MMO I've tried has been a one-trick-pony; they do a few things really well but the rest of the game sucks. That's fine and dandy if you're only interested in a particular mechanic, but I like variety .. I like a game that has a lot of different stuff to do and presents that high-quality content to the player in an accessible, enjoyable manner.
And that's WoW.
Playing: EVE, Final Fantasy 13, Uncharted 2, Need for Speed: Shift
well that's really up to every person. for me, right now, it is both Fallen Earth and Darkfall. Both of them offer things that I look for in an MMO now. I enjoy the tension and the pvp aspect of Darkfall and I love the community and the faction/crafting in Fallen Earth. I'll hit up WoW once CAT comes out but that is really about it.
5. AOC- Flopped out of the gate, no experience here
If your looking for the best PVP game then Dark Age of Camelot even as watered down as it is compared to release is actually a very happening game. People play this game to PVP not PVE pretty much now. There really are no best games out now as they are with the exception of EVE remakes of the past. There is really nothing currently on the market worth spending your money on regretfully.
Do you like open PvE? Asheron's Call, Vanguard, WoW Do you want instanced PvE raids that last for hours? WoW, EQ1 Do you want instanced PvP? WoW, DAoC, WaR Do you want open world faction PvP? DAoC, WaR Do you want open world FFA PvP? Darkfall, EvE Do you want FFA PvP with Sieges and city building? Darkfall, EvE (in a sense)
I have heard many good things about Fallen Earth but I don't know what category to put it in.
Well the main RvR in DAoC which is the Frontiers is not really instanced considering that the RvR lands are as big or bigger than the regular lands, but the Battlegrounds do fall into instanced except that they have no limit of players.
The answer to this question is the one most played:
World of Warcraft.
Wrong, that is the most "known" MMO, there are much better MMO's out there but they don't advertise to bring in the casual gamers that don't sit by a PC all day and ready PC magazines to know what's going on in the MMO world.
Advertisement is the key to make MMO's popular even if they are bad, specially if they are aimed at the population that would never touch a game.

Extensive advertising don't make bad games any better, just like putting syrup on sh*t don't make it pancakes. You have to backup what you're claiming or players will chalk it up as another MMO that hyped but hollow.
"Small minds talk about people, average minds talk about events, great minds talk about ideas."
I have not read all the replies, but with a "low spec" comp, I would NOT suggest (although decent games) Fallen Earth, and Age of Conan.
Best MMO out for low spec comps is Guild Wars. GW has been my "other" MMO for years while my main MMO has switched. GW always remains a trusty batch of fun you can depend on.
I also do recommend Age of Conan if your PC can handle it. You don't need a top end rig. Middle of the road will run AoC decent. AoC has a free trial.
As for Sci-fi?
EVE, I can't think of any other I would recommend short of waiting for The Old Republic.
LOTRO is also a solid PVE MMO (PVP sucks!) that is very polished and works well with less then uber PC. Not "my game" but it's solid.
As for WoW, I never tried it. Too cartoony kiddie for my taste.

Yes it is "that much better" then it's way too early launch, and the upcoming expansion looks pretty sweet.
I left after the bad launch also returning this year. AoC deserves it's "Most Improved MMO for 2009" award.
It has a perma free trial (restricted to Tortage). GO check it out (although the "real world" is much better then nublet island)

I'd replace Everquest 2 with Fallen Earth and you got yourself a well rounded best top 5 P2P list there:
Best top 5 Free to Play:
I'll give a special mention for the best top 5 family friendly MMOs:
"Small minds talk about people, average minds talk about events, great minds talk about ideas."
The best colours are:
1. Red
2. Black
3. Orange
4. Blue
5. Green
That's a fact and we all agree. When it comes to MMOs I think it's more a matter of personal taste.

1. WoW- probably the best casual game for newb players.
2. Lotro- a big step above WOW graphically but the same basic simplicity as WOW with a LOTRO flavor of course
3. EVE- you better love no graphics games. Get away from space station and well its space.
4. Everquest 2- dated simplistic PVE game, Better then WoW PVE wise.
5. AOC- Flopped out of the gate, no experience here

wow, AoC really better than WAR?

I'd take away the numbers, as "best" MMO is subjective as should be ranking them.

best mmo out right now has to be runescape hands down.
1. Tabula Rasa
2. Auto Assault
3. Furcadia
4. EA World aka "Sims Online"
and...5. Kingdom of Loathing Online!
