Played Aion through the betas and up to level 40. I enjoyed it in the early levels, but the farther along I got, I just got bored and discouraged with it. So behold, my two cents.
1) Its the number 2 mmo in the world already in terms of subscriptions
And half of them are bots and gold sellers.
2) Its making innovations while other mmos stagnate and become repetitive.
Gotta say, I got to level 40, and this one became just as (if not more) repeatative. I feel like I've missed out on nothing since quitting. BUT...they were VERY innovative in how to make crafting more infuriating than any other game...
3) The PvP is the best mmos have to offer (especially rifts).
Disagree. The PvP is the main reason why I quit. I've had much better PvP experiences, which were actually fun. Gankfests = not fun.
4) Unmatched character customization
Haven't played enough games to compare, but I liked the character models and variety of choices. Definitely have seen worse.
5) Excellent game design and mechanics (gliding, pvp, rifting ect.)
Loved flying and gliding. /end
6) Beautiful environments
Really did enjoy the visuals of the environment -- limiting as though they were.
7) Always something to work for and improve upon.
Don't know about that. Other games offer a LOT more.
8) Scales well for lower end computers.
Having a decent but not suuuuper-computer, the game was alright for me (unless the area was inundated with spammers and other players). But I played Ryzom, which was MUCH better. That game ran great on a laptop that shouldn't have run anything like that, even the times I was stuck on dial-up. Crazy good.
9) Rewards hard work and dedication
Give us 90 hours of your life this week, and we'll give you a piece of armor. /snore
10) Has more potential than any other mmo
As others said, every mmo has potential. It's whether or not that potential is met that matters.
NCSoft never published official subscription numbers.
So even your number 1 that it is number ... 2 in subs is ... not proven.
Actually the combined total of the Lineage1 and Lineage2 income was 49% of the NCSoft group, while Aion only came to 43%
of 160 M$ ... with 52 % of ALL revenu coming from just one country : Korea.
So in the west it is clear EVE (with 51$ million income from just the western subscriptions) is 2nd sub based MMO on a financial basis. Putting in inflated - almost free to play hourly play - is not backed up by finances in the case of Aion.
We won't even discuss the WOW income of 1.23 billion $ per year.
Want a real mmorpg? Play WOW with experience turned off mode and be Pve_Pvp King at any level without a rat race.
This is without a doubt one of the most gaudy and souless P2P games Ive tried. Player models are ridiculously exagerated and corney looking, zones are boxed in, there is no sense of discovery or exploration. Its pretty much a gold plated turd.
I agree Aion does have a fantastic graphical game engine, in fact it's the same one used for Far Cry with some obvious tweeks. Never knew Aion was the second biggest MMORPG in terms of subscriptions, I thought LotRO was the second biggest, that's a really amazing thing to consider since I'm fed up with WoW and want to play a game that's not silly in terms of players.
I'm actually planning to come back to Aion and really play the game to the end, whatever the level cap is, it really is the nicest looking MMORPG out there and it's not really mainstreamed which is a good thing. I don't care if people say the game is grindy, all MMORPG's are grindy so why should Aion be any different?
I don't know why I stopped playing this game before, I thought the character voices were too silly and was annoyed to do a secret quest where the npc disappears before you pick reward but now I think WoW is more silly then Aion, so I'm definitely coming back, try out all the range classes to see which is best for me and just play from there.
100% lie. game mechanics depend on RNG (Radom Number Generation).
My witness is over 100 runs of Dark Poeta (end game 3 hour instance) and still seeing drops that nobody in group can ware. The game has 8 classes and group limit is 6 people, so 2 classes are left out and often you see a class-specific gear/stigma drop who is not in the group. Yesterday we had a Gladiator tanking DP and Templar pants dropped when we don't have a Templar in group. Friend (Tempalr) on skype was looking for the nearest tree to hang himself for refusing to come in DP (Dark Poeta) when I asked. (joking ofc, he was swearing a lot).
That is not hard work. That is stupid game design. I am still farming B grade and A grade bosses to find a Greatsword and my final piece of armor (Templar Breastplate).
Ahh plz... enough... sod off with your 'potentiol'.... 'potentiol' is BS.
I don't pay to play a game for it's 'potentiol', i pay to play a game for the product in my hand. Not some far off dream. Even 2.0, looking at the patch notes, comes nowhere near that vid, so most of that (especially the interestin parts) is at least a year off in the West, which is crazy because other AAA MMOs (such as EQ2) had pretty much all of that in at launch.
maybe if they are gonna sell me a 'potentiol' game, like the vision trailer tries to do, I can pay them in 'potentiol' money?
1) Its the number 2 mmo in the world already in terms of subscriptions
That certainly doesn't make it the best.
2) Its making innovations while other mmos stagnate and become repetitive
... like what? Aion is the definition of repetitive gameplay.
3) The PvP is the best mmos have to offer (especially rifts)
Darkfall is better for PvP.
4) Unmatched character customization
I'll give you this one, although lots of games are actually just as good or better (CO, STO, etc)
5) Excellent game design and mechanics (gliding, pvp, rifting ect.)
The combat system is bogged down by animation mechanics, the gliding mechanics are terrible, the flight mechanics don't work for shit in combat w/ z axis problems. Lots of other crap design elements too.
6) Beautiful environments
LotrO and AoC are better.
7) Always something to work for and improve upon
WoW is better and doesn't make you want to slit your wrists in the process.
1) Its the number 2 mmo in the world already in terms of subscriptions
That certainly doesn't make it the best.
Agree with red...
2) Its making innovations while other mmos stagnate and become repetitive
... like what? Aion is the definition of repetitive gameplay.
So are all MMO's. It's whether or not you enjoy what your repeating that matters.
3) The PvP is the best mmos have to offer (especially rifts)
Darkfall is better for PvP.
Darkfall PvP is very bland, I think. I played for the 7 day trial and it really just seemed like ganking and zerging, shooting spells (which are obtained from GRINDING mats) over and over and twisting around trying to melee people for no particular goal in sight. I'm not saying Aion is better in terms of ganking/zerging, but stop being a Darkfall fanboi ffs.
4) Unmatched character customization
I'll give you this one, although lots of games are actually just as good or better (CO, STO, etc)
"Lots of games, CO, STO"
Wow buddy, that sure was alot of games. Oh, did you mean the etc counted because you saw that other posters mentioned it and tried to make their argument stronger?
5) Excellent game design and mechanics (gliding, pvp, rifting ect.)
The combat system is bogged down by animation mechanics, the gliding mechanics are terrible, the flight mechanics don't work for shit in combat w/ z axis problems. Lots of other crap design elements too.
What axis is the w axis, exactly? I only know of x, y, and z. How can the gliding mechanics be terrible when all you do glide? There are no mechanics behind it besides moving. The flight mechanics work just fine, you might have a problem with the duration, which is a valid argument. What isn't valid is "Lots of other crap design elements too." Now you're just throwing crap out there to strengthen your argument. List these or don't make a retarded statement.
6) Beautiful environments
LotrO and AoC are better.
When you're not zoning in AoC. Pretty much complete opinion on this one.
7) Always something to work for and improve upon
WoW is better and doesn't make you want to slit your wrists in the process.
Good argument. Completely and utterly flawless... You're stupid.
8) Scales well for lower end computers
sure
Boring, nothing to flame here.
9) Rewards hard work and dedication
rewards unemployement and no life
As does any MMO if you don't play within moderation. You apparently play Darkfall, that additionally rewards you with being a genuine asshole to anyone that doesn't agree with you, as well as a huge fanboi of shitty games. Congratulations!
Any MMO has as much potential as anyone else. Understand the word "potential". "The inherent ability or capacity for growth, development, or coming into being." ANY MMO at any state, EQ, DAoC, WAR, AoC, has the potential to do anything, it's not limited by pick and choose. Number 10 was kind of a stupid argument, but the top 10 reasons for anyone playing any game, MMO or not, differ because of personal opinion.
I feel better now, I took a dump while writing this. I'm awesome.
Just reading the title was enough to make me laugh... Aion isnt that bad of a game really, but it should be one of those F2P asian cash shop grinders ... it even stacks up pretty well alongside PWI.... though.. PWI might just have the edge..
If you like to play dress up, endlessly grind off cutesy teenie-booper mobs, 90 pound girls fighting with toy-like weapons that looks like it weighs twice as much as the wielder then Aion is for you! Oh and the future of Aion has more "girlie" fluff. Houses with huge candy on it, mounts that look like it came straight out of a kiddie anime cartoon. Come on kiddy bunnies for a mount?! Are you serious?! How can any adult male play this game seriously and not question his manhood or sexuality.
To me, Aion is Hello Kitty Online with PvP. Like a big teenage pillow fight.
This coming from a guy with the username BarryManilow? I find that a bit humorous. I could understand if it were Sinatra, but someone with the username BarryManilow should not be questioning the "manhood" of others. However, I do agree with some of your points.
You just need to find a better way of stating your opinion.
Aion lv 1 to 20 is the best mmorpg ever made, great song, great graphics great fealing... great...
than .......
my exp..
I get kill all time with my 40 sin/temp/sm by lv 50 or group of lv 50 (no chance to win) in heiron, with the other class lv 20 35 get kill every 10 mins by ppls with equip full gold and weapon +10 (no chance to win). (that s why i quit and all my friend did the same)
that s aion. (atm) grind and gank.
About craft.. is bad. never fun.
but maybe in future.... if they fix rift and fix ganking and bot maybe add some non full pvp server... maybe ill back on it.
My Personal experience, after playing Chinese Aion 3 months before its release, and then playing 4 months after that...
Here are somethings that are horrible with the game, in my humble opinion.
1. Game has no soul. It glues together aspects of other mmo's.
2. Combat animations grow stale very quickly.
3. Grind. Grind. Grind. (not always a problem... but it's not an enjoyable grind).
4. Shalow PvE. Tank and spank bossess with very unimaginative Instances. The entire zone is filled with hundreds of mobs with only 3-4 different skins.
5. The Abyss is a very shallow pvp experience with 100 vs. 100 cluster fuck, where your computer crashes unless you do F12 and turn off the character models of other players.
And other things....
I don't think it's the worst game by far. It can be fun, and it does look beautiful... but best mmo. Far from it.
1) Its the number 2 mmo in the world already in terms of subscriptions
-This isnt a reason. It's a stat.
2) Its making innovations while other mmos stagnate and become repetitive
-name one innovation
Rifts.
3) The PvP is the best mmos have to offer (especially rifts)
-I dislike pvp
See reply to number 9.
4) Unmatched character customization
-Okay, i'll give you that. It's pretty good.
5) Excellent game design and mechanics (gliding, pvp, rifting ect.)
-good points. You have 2/10 now.
6) Beautiful environments
it is pretty, that's 3/10
7) Always something to work for and improve upon
-not a reason
8) Scales well for lower end computers
-not really
This is actually one of the better reasons. But you can keep your goggles on, it's cool bro.
9) Rewards hard work and dedication
-for what? the pvp? Pvp is boooooring. I hate pvp.
"I hate pvp so that makes this game fail."
No, that makes you not like PvP and thus not like PvP games. This is a PvP orientated game, what the hell do you expect? DAoC was one of the best PvP games ever, and you wouldn't like it because it is PvP based. It doesn't make it bad, it makes you not interested. Think of it this way. Some people like spinach, some people don't. It's an acquired taste. Just because you don't share that taste doesn't make spinach terrible. Jesus you're an idiot.
10) Has more potential than any other mmo
-again, not a reason.
"F" 3/10 for poor effort. Not well thought out. Try again
I'm not saying Aion is better in terms of ganking/zerging, but stop being a Darkfall fanboi ffs.
Darkfall PvP has a point that doesn't revolve around a gear grind, and its actually twitch based and requires some FPS skills instead of tab/target.
ABP is also significantly better. THe AAA gaming market isn't exactly huge. He said it was the "unmatched", its not. Don't need to make a stronger arugment than that.
Ok, let me break down shorthand for the retarded illiterate jackasses of the forum. " w/ z axis problems" means "with z axis problems." Your not really that stupid are you? Oh... you are.
If you've ever played a melee class, you'd know exactly how trash the air combat system is in recognizing z axis ranges... and you'd know how the animation system of the game trips over itself
Other crap design elements
1) the way Abyss PvP shits all over lower level players and promotes ganking people who have zero chance of fighting back.
2)The way the character progression ends up having every being near mirror copies of eachother.
3) the way siege rewards don't adequately give incinitive for people to defend
4) the looting system and absymall drop rates that make you want to slit your wrists
I could sit here and name more, but the "etc" was put in initially because there was more than I wanted to be bothered listing in the first place.
Happy?
6) Beautiful environments
LotrO and AoC are better.
When you're not zoning in AoC. Pretty much complete opinion on this one.
Nah, AoC just has straight up prettier environments. And LotrO just destroy it altogether. If he had said something to the effect of character avatars and itemization graphics being the best... i'd agree with him. Aion has really low textures on its environments though. It looks good, not amazing.
7) Always something to work for and improve upon
WoW is better and doesn't make you want to slit your wrists in the process.
Good argument. Completely and utterly flawless... You're stupid.
WoW gives you a dozen different ways of improving. Aion gives you one. Being called stupid by a retard isn't going to hurt my feelings.
8) Scales well for lower end computers
sure
Boring, nothing to flame here.
9) Rewards hard work and dedication
rewards unemployement and no life
As does any MMO if you don't play within moderation. You apparently play Darkfall, that additionally rewards you with being a genuine asshole to anyone that doesn't agree with you, as well as a huge fanboi of shitty games. Congratulations!
I don't play Darkfall. I don't have the time the game require, and would levvy the same accusation against it. I still think Darkfall is a much better PvP game for a variety of reasons related to the mechanics and social politics of the game I won't go into detail on. Pretty funny how hard your trying to latch on that fanboi tit though... when all other arguments fail eh?
Any MMO has as much potential as anyone else. Understand the word "potential". "The inherent ability or capacity for growth, development, or coming into being." ANY MMO at any state, EQ, DAoC, WAR, AoC, has the potential to do anything, it's not limited by pick and choose. Number 10 was kind of a stupid argument, but the top 10 reasons for anyone playing any game, MMO or not, differ because of personal opinion.
If you want to talk about potential, talk about a game like Eve. That's a game with vast potential, both realized and unrealized. I don't play that game either btw, before you try latching on to that fanboi tit again.
Bring a bigger gun next time, your wasting my time.

I wonder what kind of dent FFXIV will make on Aion's server populations (western servers) when it comes out.
I like the game, but arial combat needs work. I feel bad for melee classes, range class are so beastly.
And I play cleric, but sometimes it seems my heals don't go off.... wtf man

This is one of the bottom 3 P2P I have ever played.

the rest is asian grind grind grind grind and more grind.
nice viral marketing but it wont work on us, we tried and it failed.
