    Wow.  Opeth?  Seriously?

Do you also like Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park?

Why don't you piss off? I don't think you understand where that guy is coming from. You mock him by asking if he likes LP yet those morons are NOTHING like a respectable band like Opeth.

I guess its all in your definition of respectable.  I think Opeth is just as respectable as Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit.  All these bands have mass appeal to tweens and 20 somethings who have an unhealthy vampire obsession, tweenage angst, and likely own the DVD for Twilight: New Moon.   May as well throw Static X into the mix while we're at it... and... who was that band that wrote Bodies Hit the Floor *googles*  Drowning Pool.  Yeah.  Great stuff.

    Tweens.

Are you sure you know who Opeth is? Like im being serious you seem like your confusing them with another band, because

    A. Opeth isnt even on the radio so they def dont have this mass apeal your talking about.

    B. The people I know who like Opeth are older metal fans who enjoy megadeath and Black Label Society.

    C. None of their sounds have anything to do with being a teenager.

    D.  All the members are older men defiently past their 30's.

So either your just talking out of your ass and wanted an excuse to use the word "Tweens" which apparently you think is hilarious but no one else does. Or your just Trolling.

Maybe, maybe not.  I remember that band as having some shit to do with Egypt on one of their album covers, and this silly bimbo I was dating at the time talking to me about how they were so great.

That said, there are a lot of "metal" bands that are pure noise, and don't seem to get the whole "music" thing. But you'll have bands that suck in any genre.

I think since Sabbath invented the genre of Heavy Metal is hard to put them into a Hard Rock category. I think your looking at metal in a very limited sense, and not looking at progression of time.

Its like saying the pioneers that first landed in the US wernt American's because they dont fit the modern desription of an American. You have to look at the full spectrum, in which Metal ranges from Black Sabbath all the way to today with bands like Protest the Hero, Between the Buried and Me, Cannible Corpse, etc.

Also I think what people find so hard about Modern Metal is the Screaming. There is a musical property to Screaming but its not in the convential sense.

Screaming is about rythm, where as singing is a melody.

Screaming can seem to certain people as "Easier" than screaming because there is no actual physical note to a scream. Singing on the other hand the conentration comes with trying to match one note to the next to form your melody.

But Screaming is deifntly a viable form of musical talent, it just gets botched when everyone starts doing and badly for that matter, many loosing their voice after only a few years, or just sounding like total shit live or in recordings.

Im a singer, and I have been trying to gain the confidence slowly to start screaming myself, the only reason I havent been practicing it daily is because im trying to get the right sound and feeling from my throat (Which is where im going to be screaming from). Rather than tearing my voice up day after day and doing damage to my regular singing voice.

Nope.  Dunno who Nile is...although thats pretty geographically egyptian.  But yeah, it was Opeth or something to that effect.  I remember it cause it sounded distintly Egyptian in the name as well.   The name reminded me of The Mummy, and the music was so bad that the mere mention of the name evokes a sudden justification for mass suicide.

    HOHO!  It wasnt Opeth.

    It was OTEP!

The names are similar enough that the urge to vomit could not be restrained.  Apologies.

Somone said that they were practicing singing, I think it was JiveTurkey. However it was, summoning power from the the throat is the wrong way to go about growling. I've been watching corpse grinder interviews and he says you have to use your diafram. (spelling?)

You might damage your throat easily if you do it all from there.

Metal I can mostly live without, I would never accuse it of being just noise or talentless though, metal fusion is more appealing to me. A couple of us guild mates got together to make a xmas video, one guy from belgium (in 2 metal bands) did vocals and guitars then sent them to me and I mixed it up with more dance orientated beats and synths, all done as a version of  whams 'last christmas' lol :)

I have eclectic tastes ranging from old school punk like Crass, old school  electronica, trip hop, nu jazz, drum & bass, break beat, deep house, hell I'll even admit to liking a spice girls track (awaits flames).

    I love MMOs :)

Yeah Metal is a wide bunch of music... I guess I do like some original Heavy Metal.  People seem to forget that Led Zeppelin  was also considered "Heavy Metal" but Idk about that.  Led Zepplin II was a pure Blues/Rock album no doubt about it. Now Black Sabbath I'd call that heavy metal.

Hey all! I am a 35-year old guy who's been playing MMOs for quite a few years, alternating between Star Wars Galaxies, Everquest II, World of Warcraft and The Lord of the Rings Online (with the latter being the favorite, and EQ2 being where I am currently fooling around).

I'm a music teacher, so it goes without saying that I am interested in the subject and though I don't post often I kind of had to leave my signature in this excellent thread (or rather excellent topic).

Being heavily invested in music makes it easy to dislike the more common forms of popular music such as hip hop, trance, r'n'b and such, but I do try not to deride people for listening to it.

After all,  complex and/or creative compositions , which I sometimes call "music for musicians", isn't for everyone. That being said, I have been where some other posters here have been - I am talking about the beans/trance connection. Glad I got out of that mess.

So, I have also noticed that many, many people that I have met online are into metal. Not all metal is of the complex variety of course, yet I do categorize the various forms of metal (especially extreme metal) together with classical music, progressive rock and jazz as "real" music in that this is challenging music. Of course, creating a worldwide hit with a pop song is also a challenge, but it's a different kind of challenge.

Why did I go off on this tangent [weak pun intended] anyway.

All I want to do is scream : METAL FOREVER!!! I LOVES IT A LOT.

I love metal so, so much. The music means so much to me.

    My favorite bands:

OPETH, MY DYING BRIDE, BAL-SAGOTH, EDGE OF SANITY, DEATH, MORBID ANGEL, KREATOR, IRON MAIDEN, SLAYER, MEGADETH, PARADISE LOST, TESTAMENT, NILE, METALLICA, CRADLE OF FILTH, IN FLAMES, SEPULTURA, AMORPHIS, OBITUARY, ROTTING CHRIST, KING DIAMOND, MOONSPELL, EXODUS, BLOODBATH, BEHEMOTH, CARCASS, DARK TRANQUILLITY, CYNIC, PESTILENCE, HELLOWEEN, BELPHEGOR, CHILDREN OF BODOM, CANDLEMASS, OZZY OSBOURNE, KATATONIA, DIO, DIMMU BORGIR, GORGOROTH, GARDENIAN, DEATHSPELL OMEGA, GORGUTS, ENSLAVED, NOVEMBRE, ANNIHILATOR, DISSECTION, MOTÖRHEAD, OLD MAN'S CHILD, SEPTIC FLESH, ANTHRAX, WASP, CARACH ANGREN, WHILE HEAVEN WEPT, CELESTIAL SEASON, GENESIS, SUFFOCATION, ARCTURUS, ANATHEMA, AYREON, ORPHANAGE, AKERCOCKE, SATYRICON, WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART, METAL CHURCH, QUEENSRYCHE, NINNGHIZHIDDA, IN MOURNING, VINTERSORG, SABBAT, BORKNAGAR, PEARL JAM, OBISIDIAN GATE, VADER, SOILWORK, SYSTEM OF A DOWN, NOVEMBER'S DOOM, ICED EARTH, SAVATAGE, ORPHANED LAND, ARSIS, ENID, IMMOLATION, OPHTHALAMIA, BLACK SABBATH, HAGGARD, HIDDEN IN THE FOG, ENTOMBED, HEXENHAUS, IMPALED, DARK MOOR, EMPEROR, BLIND GUARDIAN, COVENANT, PANTERA, MAYHEM, DARKTHRONE, AMON AMARTH, MANOWAR, AT THE GATES, TWISTED SISTER, MARDUK, CORONER, RUSH, SAMAEL, FLOTSAM & JETSAM, CAMEL, ABYSSOS, LACRIMAS PROFUNDERE, ARCH ENEMY, SUICIDAL TENDENCIES, UNMOORED, FATES WARNING, ABORTED, THE GATHERING, MACHINE HEAD, OVERKILL, MØRK GRYNING, EMBRACED, EMPYRIUM, DISMEMBER, BENIGHTED, HAUNTED SHORES, VARATHRON, SWALLOW THE SUN, CARNAL FORGE, DEMIURG, FRAGMENTS OF UNBECOMING, SKYCLAD, THE MEADS OF ASPHODEL, KALMAH, LYKATHEA AFLAME, SPAWN OF POSSESSION, HOLLENTHON, RISING FORCE, SIRENA, MELECHESH, NECROPHAGIST, SOLEFALD, LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN, ANTONIO VIVALDI, TRISTANIA, MASTODON, ALICE IN CHAINS, IKUINEN KAAMOS, and a HOST of other great bands

---Ok I guess I have showed my devotion by now, sorry 'bout that. Got carried away. I have yet to meet a "fan" of mainstream music who is devoted, by the way.

There are a few mainstream artists I do respect, however, because they manage to make good music within that old and tired formula - U2, Abba, A-ha, Prince, Madonna...a few others maybe..

    I hate heavy metal.

I can listen to virtually any music, depending on mood .. but most heavy metal just sounds like discordant noise to me, though I do occasionally enjoy symphonic metal (or whatever the subgenre is called) such as Nightwish, Sirenia and After Forever.

No, it does not matter. I am curious and interested in the subject both professionally and personally.  Because "sounds like noise to me" can be said about any kind of music, really. If my girlfriend turns on the radio in the car I get all stressed and tired by the endlessly repetitive plastic mainstream music but if I put on some rippin black metal I'm fine (but then my girlfriend gets stressed^^)

But any person who actively tries to hear beyond the wall of sound that apparently is so noisy to many people, will probably realize that metal music is much more than noise, and that it has a lot more going for it than any other music form popular among young and middle-aged people.

I hate heavy metal with a passion. I like punk, indie, blues, psychodelia and early rnr. I think you might have a point though. Back when I was young (all those years ago) and into punk we saw role-playing games like dungeons and dragons as uncool games for heavy metal types. That's why I never tried them, probably.

I like a lot of metal, though I wouldn't describe myself as a metal fan. I like a wide variety of music from Jacson 5 to metal or jazz. Think I like songs from all generes, though some more than others.
