There has been some confusion here about the exact meaning of the term carebear, so I will clarify it.
A carebear is someone who is anti pure PvP.
A PvE'r can be a carebear, and a PvPer can be a carebear.
People who are anti pure PvP. This means that they dont want PvP that has no restrictions.
For instance, they think that a level 1 in their town should be protected from a level 60.
They think it should be impossible for PvP to occur when the numbers are not even. God forbid someone ever 2v1'd someone.
Most likely, these carebears are the product of playing a PvP server and getting PKed once. Instead of accepting their loss and moving on, they decided to pack up shop and head to a carebear server. Most normal PvP players accept a loss regardless of the disadvantages etc. or any other excuses. But the carebears, no. They think there should be special rules protecting everyone from other people.
And if you think this is a joke I'm not joking. PvP nowadays is so far from real PvP it is sickening. All those hardcore GM's and Gladiators from WoW would normally be on the PvE servers in EQ because the PvP servers were the penal colonies. You have to be really hardened to play there.
[Mod Edit]
I could be wrong but it sounds like you are unhappy that people who you gank are getting upset that you are 40 levels higher than them when you do so. You think they should just get over it and tell you how uber you are for killing them when they have no defense against you. If so I just want to say that that attitude is why many people do not play PvP anymore. It is not that they are carebears - it is that people who do that and exhibit that attitude of I will kill lowbies and they just have to get over it or suffering from a social disability. People like that have ruined true PvP. True PvP is about battling people of equal abilities to see who wins, not harrassing the newr players. Call me a Care bear if you want - I do not play PVP because of the average player base of those games/servers not because of being afraid of dying and losing all my stuff. Kill me and you get over it - instead of boasting about the skills invlved in killing some one who is many levels lower. My opinion, sorry if you disagree. (note: to Mods, I am not trying to troll - just to respond to a point the OP made).

It sounds like you can't read too.
I think like 50 people in this post have said "I just want to gank newbs" as a defense.
Who cares if I did? PvP servers filled with hardcore PvPers, they should be able to gank each other. I understand there are some carebears here who can't handle PvP servers, that is why they need to say on the Carebear servers. But no, instead they come here and tell me "I want to gank newbs".
Who cares? PvP is fun, the less restrictions on PvP, the more possibilities there are. If your PvP system is for carebears then it can only occur 1 way, in an instance, with even numbers, over meaningless AP/Honor, for gearshop items.
Now a real PvP MMORPG? PvP occurs for any number of reasons there, not just carebears wanting to buy gearshop items by farming other players over meaningless objectives.
I always thought of a carebear as someone that is more interested in the pve, social aspects, crafting, etc., of an mmorpg then the pvp part. They prefer to work WITH others to achieve a common goal rather than against them. It's all about preference.
You can put a negative spin on every gamer term, it doesn't make it true.
Some "hardcore" gamers limit themselves by putting up a laundry list of features an mmorpg must have before they will even consider it an mmorpg much less actually play it.
I've played just about every mmo out there at one time or another over the last 10 years, some held my attention longer than others. To me, I don't care if it's sandbox, themepark, hardcore, carebear, or whatever the raging nerds want to label it or other gamers to make themselves feel unique, leet, or hardcore, it just has to be fun and immersive. And lately, not many games come close to doing that for me.

So I was going to thank you for your obscenely objective posts, with facts to support opinions when used, while keeping an open mind. Then i thought to myself and said, doh. Anyway at any rate keep up the good work, you deserve it.
Oh and while you are at it if I give you my address can you come to my house and grief/gank me for a few days?
Non-carebears emphasize a lack of rules. A lack of structured play. Their games are a lot more Toy than typical games.
(This isn't intended as a dig against the non-carebears. There are plenty of perfectly acceptable toys, like sports cars. It's mostly in PVP that toys become less interesting forms of play.)
Yeah, we all know how structured games are, especially MMORPGs. I mean you log in and it's so structured, because there isn't freedom of choice or anything in an MMORPG. It's not like you can just walk in and move around freely and do whatever you want.. Oh wait you can
Non-carebears emphasize real games that allow freedom, while carebears want the company to protect everyone from everything.
Carebears want to take away your right to do anything, because they can't handle it.
They can't handle PvP, so they say to turn it off, or to put it in certain zones, or to restrict it to certain levels, or to remove penalties for dying in PvP.
Carebears are exactly like casuals are, except carebears are focused on PvP.
Casuals are basically PvE carebears, always whining about how PvE content is too tough and they can't invest time in leveling and the raids take too long and the zones do not drop enough loot etc.
Either way, I don't like Carebears or Casuals. They are both whiners and are ruining the genre. I don't want a dumbed down PvP OR PvE system because of them.
If these people had their way, they would have an MMORPG where you could do nothing except talk to other players in towns and do your tradeskills. There would be any PVE or PVP in their MMORPG, because they dont have more than 5 minutes to play MMORPGs and its unfair to put content in the game that they can't do in that period of time
I've pointed out before that the games you champion seem to be some of the most casual PVP to be found. Skill isn't required to win: that's pretty casual.
But your veering offtopic from what my post was even about shows that you seem to be more interested in regurgitating this trollish agenda of yours than having meaningful conversation.

Just as I suspected... Yet another of those whose behavior has resulted in there being fewer and fewer sand box games available. Who cares? Obviously a LOT of the player base, who have taken their *business* to games that don't allow(or encourge) ganking and griefing. Your "real PvP" games have been pretty much driven into narrow niche markets, when they get funded at all. Take a bow, you and your ilk have no one but yourself to blame for the situation you find yourself in.
I am against the idea of Carebears. I prefer the idea that if there is a tagged PvP player then they should be fair game. People know the risk of PvP. In Ryzom, factions earn points for defeating the other faction's players.

Ah... Because they will no longer tolerate games that allow(or encourage) ganking and griefing? The days of such games have passed.
Please start some more threads, I find them highly entertaining. Maybe one about how casual players are ruining MMOs, we haven't seen that one before.
Alright, let us all hold hands and do the carebear stare!
lol stupid carebears.
