Seriously I just want everyone to try this excersise with me.
Close your eyes, and imagine for a moment that The Old Republic isnt based off a huge IP (Star Wars) and imagine it doesnt have a 150 million dollar budget, and that it isnt being made by everyones go to RPG company "Bioware".
Now open your eyes, and watch this.
It looks terrible! Seriously I want to like this game just as much as the next person, but you cant tell me that everything going on in that video doesnt look like some cheesy game for a console. Theres nothing MMO like about it, nor is there anything exciting about it.
And of course im sure ill see, "O its Alpha, the game will look and play totally different in a year and a half."
Watch that video of WoW at around the same time development wise as SWTOR. The Animations and everything are the same, the only changes are the UI once the game launches. Go ahead and look at other videos too, you will see that the core gameplay looked the same.
Now im sure is the part where people will bring up the "Story pillar is whats important." Yes that is important, but we have already seen the same thing in a little game called AOC, and was the story awesome? Yes! Was it the best part of the game? Defiently. Would a entire game based on just that story part be intresting and fun? Probably. And is it worth a monthly fee to play that single player story? You tell me.
I cant honestly say that it makes any sense for someone to want to play a game and pay a monthly fee for it, when its just a single player story with multiperson side missions taked on.
On top of that, how long could that possibly last? Do you really think Bioware and EA will get back the money they threw into this game? Is the money showing at this point? No its not.
Seriously people, lets forget the hype and the faces of fame that surround the game. Instead lets judge the game on what we are given, and not what is promised or foreshadowed.
Comments
You'll have to be more explicit at what you mean by 'It looks terrible!'. What exactly is what you don't like. I watched the video, without any hype or fanboyishm and it looks ok to me (except that it looks too easy, I like challenging combat)
Yeah, we all know WoW Gnomes still look like this:
All you want to do is judge the game based on the information that's already released (judging by the ignorant but far too common "it's a single-player game with multiplayer on the side!" comment), not what we'll get at launch. Yes, ignore the hype... when we actually get a complete, launched game.
OK, I went along with your exorcise now try mine.
Seriously, stop predicting doom and dgloom so you can come back in 6 months after release and start posting all of the I told you sos. Or mysteriously disappear if it delivers what was promised in spades.
There are some ideas and concepts in this game that do not make sense from an MMO POV. However, does not mean they should not try it.
It may work, it may not.
Stop trying to convince everyone you are right. I thought WoW was a joke when I looked at it years ago. I still think it is a joke graphically and in general as an MMO. Still holds the top spot for subscriptions tho.
Does it make me wrong, not in my opinion. Does my opinion mean anything to the million or so subscribed to it currently?
Obviously not.
Say hello, To the things you've left behind. They are more a part of your life now that you can't touch them.
What I'm getting from the OP is that he doesn't like the game because he doesn't like the game.
The logic is infallible.
Alltern8 Blog | Star Wars Space Combat and The Old Republic | Cryptic Studios - A Pre Post-Mortem | Klingon Preview, STO's Monster Play
he says there are nommo like things in SWthen says epople will says its in alpha and then shows a WoW alpha video that shows NOTHING MMO like what so ever
Or, you could look at it this way:
Pros:
Bioware
Star Wars IP
Massive emphasis on storytelling
Cons:
Clunky graphics and animations (possibly due to alpha status, give them some benefit)
Overly-traditional class based gameplay from a company famous for openended skill systems
Stagnant 2-faction system where neitehr side can communicate or interact
Sketchy if any details on pvp
Sketchy if any details on crafting
Sketchy if any details on social interaction
Heavily, massively reliant on instances, which in other games has often led to a sense of isolation
What may, if true, be the most expensive-to-make PC game ever. (read the article on the main page; if those numbers are close to accurate it's terrifying)
Of course those pros are a big deal. We all wanna see Star Wars done right; and we all know Bioware makes good games. But so many of the decions that have led to the game as we know it worry me. I don't want guild wars in space with a few more cutscenes. I honestly want SWG with an updated graphics engine and all the stupid removed. Since that's not going to happen, I'll at least settle for a fun engrossing MMO experince with open world gameplay. Thus far I see no indication that's going to happen here either. I want to like this game, but I'm worried.
Well, i've been no fan of SWTOR since they announced it would be a wow-ish theme park (and that means to me "we are sticking to the average mmo type with minor extra features and a few eyecandies").
From what i've seen, there is nothing so special about it except the SW skin. It could pretty much be one of those dozens of f2p korean games being mass produced, it looks very standard. Probably not a bad game, but... select target, use a few quickbar skills, go on with next one... well... i've seen all that at least a dozen times in my life as mmo player.
I read this and I feel much better. As more and more information is released, we can form a more accurate, fair judgment. Unlike what the OP is trying to do.
No one really knows anything about this game.....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
And he doesn't like the game, before there actually is a finished game.
Or any external play-testing (beyond journo hands-ons).
It is truly an impressive display of dislike.
Personally, I won't be making up my mind about liking/disliking the game til I've played it.
And play it I shall.
The only people I see that care about hype are the people with a hate on for the game. The rest of us are just taking it in as the information is released. But as far as I'm concerned, it looks awesome.
Currently Playing: World of Warcraft
I see a lot of assumptions going around... from the MMORPG staff all the way down to the honest to goodness trolls. The fact of the matter is, we're at least a year away if not more from release, and we still just don't know everything that this game will offer. We get bits and pieces of information, and a lot of "We can't talk about it."
All this leads to is assumptions from people who just don't know. They leave rash generalizations and portray the game as something they know they don't want or won't like for the simple fact that they just. don't. know.
So honestly, can we just forget the hype and let the developers tell us what the game will be like, instead of making assumptions?
I think the environments look awesome, very cool looking and I especially like the fact that each planet has distinct colour palettes. I really don't mind the stylized characters TBH, I think the hands are a bit big but other then that I think they look good.
The animations of SWTOR and WoW are very polished, why is that a bad thing? Also WoW's characters and worlds are lower polygon and therefore blocky where SWTOR is not. The core gameplay of SWTOR is standard MMO design but faster paced.
As for AoC, the game wasn't a story based game, the first 20 levels were voiced plus you had the night missions which were the personal story. After that no more voice except the odd quest here and there and a destiny quest every 10-20 levels up till level 80, but that's it.
Your opinion is just that, i'm sure there are more of you out there but there are also countless thousands that are going to play this game.
EA has already doomed this game for saying it needs 2 million customers. If it doesn't people will label The Old Republic a failure. The media is hyping this game to such a high level that the expectations will be so enormous that this game will never recover if it falls short.
Couple points to Sebali (my quotes are being broke today for some reason)
1) Regarding classes: The fact that there are set classes in the game, and a small number of them at that, is a fact.. Each class per the information we've been given has a limited set of skills exclusive to that class. Given that this is a TOR game, I expect a game where I can mix and match whatever skills I want.
2) Factions: There ARE two factions: Sith and Republic. Period. Yes you can choose how to play them, but you're STILL a Sith or a Republic, and that cannot be changed, according to a few interviews I've seen.
3) Instancing: I hadn't read the interview you're seeing with regards to their being open-world content. Most of what I've read has indicated or flat-out-said the game is mostly instanced.
I am so glad someone else said this besides me for a change. I keep getting slammed by the haters on here every time I say it.
I agree with you. The only ones freaking out about the game are the haters. The rest of us are waiting to see what there is to offer. The only other forums I've ever seen so many haters on is the SWG forums. Its become incredibly childish. If you don't like what you've seen, go away. Like intelligent mature people. Thats what everyone ELSE does when they don't like a game. They don't sit around on their forums trying to scare the living crap out of everybody.
You guys are 100% correct imo. I'm trying my best to stay out the discusions about this game as I don't think i've ever been as excited about any game like I am about this one. It doesn't matter how many times people say reasonable things like this. Some ellements of this community will just keep trying to tear everything down just for there own ammusment . Look at what hapened before the releases of Aion and Darkfall for example. Unfortunatly its just human nature. As a species we are prity retarded.
My response is: this game looks pretty good! You say it is coming out a year from now, and we are seeing the low-rez early movies? Looks pretty good to me. Looks like a real game, unlike some stuff we see lately that is releasing.
Given that it is BioWare, I expect the graphics to be solid, the writing to be excellent, and the game to be fun.

2025: 48 years on the Net.
You are wrong the game is not heavily instanced, there is a press release on this. I will find the sticky later. Over 80% of the game is open ended.
Speak for yourself. I played Aion a good four months before offering ANY criticisms thereof. Same goes for Darkfall. If you think that the only thing that goes on in these forums is bashing, think again. A lot of good discussions have come out of these so-called bashers. To compare this game's upcoming success or failure to that of Aion and Darkfall does TOR a complete disservice. Maybe in comparison to World of Warcraft, or Everquest, or even something like EVE Online, then you sort of are in somewhat the same realm of discussion.
Why do I bring these games up and not others? Specifically for their originality. WoW took the best features of curent and past MMOs (of the time) and innovated them to wonderful ideas.
Everquest was one of the first MMOs.
EVE Online, well, its just EVE. Its one server, and its biggest feature was that one individual can drasticallly affect or destroy another guild or the economy.
Aion was garbage, and it was said on these forums many, many times. There was credibility and validity to the statements. Darkfall to this day is a major gankfest that resembles complete anarchy. If you enjoy that, go for it.
If the number of reviews of "people say[ing] reasonable things" about games gets taken for granted, so too will the number of thoughtful and critical reviews of garbage games also get taken for granted.

Thats why I said "Some ellements of this community" And for every decent discusion we had there was also just as many pointles or hate threads that went nowhere. Thats just what hapens before the release of a big game. personaly, I prefer to make my mind up about a game after I have played it. Also, I dont have to take the fact that there are thoughtful and critical reviews on this site , by this community for granted, otherwise I wouldn't log in every day.
Well then, I'm glad we are on the same page. I was beginning to think you hated us.
