Allods got a poor review on this forum generally.
So I had to try it for myself.
It's a pretty good, solid game. I consider it equal to Lord of the Rings Online, Aion, or EQ2. I really don't see myself paying a sub fee for these games anymore.
Would I pay to play Fallen Earth over a free to play Allods? No.
How about Darkfall, no.
Ryzom, nope.
Not for $15 a month when Allods is free.
So what is the future of pay to plays? Pretty bleak if you ask me. Assuming that the quality of future free to plays is as good as or surpasses Allods.
Does Allods have problems? Yes, the mobs are pretty brain dead. Two can be talking face to face and you can pull them one at a time. There's not a lot of variety in equipment and while the game is polished, you do run into the occasional hitch. For some reason my client causes a blue screen when I alt tab out. Customer service is absent. And there are pvp balancing problems that will no doubt be fixed with buffs and nerfs in the future.
The community? Pretty good. You get an assortment of people who wander in off the Internet to try something for free but most are mmo vets.
It's free to play, the only cost is the time it takes to download. Give it a try for yourself.

lol you haven't gotten very far have you?
Allods isn't free, it's the most expensive game on this entire site.

I definetly agree, it has sortof its own style, astral ship battles are unique.
best free to play out there, if you disagree, you obviously haven´t tried it yet.
and by FAR it has the best f2p MMO graphics!
Three words: Fear of Death.
That being said, my stance against F2P has lightened somewhat. While I still consider the majority of them to be money-grubbing grind-fests that make your play experience miserable enough that you'll fork out dough to make it a little less painless, there are some F2P that aren't like that. Heck, even some P2P titles have a little of that (here's looking at you, Cryptic.)
That being said, I quit Allods when I realized it took me 2 hours to get one quarter of the drops for a quest (i.e. the infamous formerly $20 bag).
Edit: I'm kinda sad what happened with Allods, though. Gibberling were effing awesome.
Agreed you will be paying a very large amount of cash if you are looking to well survive whether that be in PVP or PVE
Played: World of Warcraft (5Y), WarHammer (3M), Anarchy Online, Runescape (5+Y), Lord of the Rings Online, Runes of Magic, City of Heroes/Villains, Dungeons and Dragons Online, Fallen Earth (1M)
Currently Playing: Guild Wars
Currently Trying: None
Taking a Break From: EVE Online
I don't know, I have a bad experience with f2p games. If you want to get to the top and be something you have to pay in the cash shop. If you don't want to pay you'll get pawned from those who did. So I don't see them so much free anymore. Plus I tried Allods and didn't really impressed me.
Its a nice looking game . I'd think DDO have got it right allow two option make it free to play with a cash shop but also allow a subscriber option . I took a look at allods and liked what I saw but my only concern is that it would be too expensive to really think about playing .
Graphically its very much like Warcraft or maybe what Warcraft could be with a graphics update .
Its free to download and log in, if you really want to play the entire game you will be paying far more than $15 a month. And talk about a grind without exp pots, if you do not pay you find a entire new definition to the word grind. Hell a good bag will cost you more than $15 unless they changed pricing yet again! A BAG!
Of course if all you want to do is log in and look at pretty graphics and do not care about a super grind to do anything and do not mind that the people paying far more than $15 a month will be better than you ever will then go ahead and play allods for free but if you want to keep up with the Jones's you will be paying far more than $15.
to be a p2p "killer" as f2p players so lovingly call any game thats free and new, your going to need solid character controls and fluid combat. Allods lacks this.
Now seeing as it was a f2p game, it wasnt nearly as bad as most of them.
Also, since g-potato is running it, expect a whole assload of kids playing...young kids...i hear FlyFF has gotten boring for them.
Anyway, what would happen if allods went p2p, charged $50 for the box and $15 a month? No one would play, it cant hang out with the big boys or it would.
The only games that Allods might "kill" are other gpotato games, and they are all free.
People do the bag quest as a raid now, it increases the drop rate.
But seriously, you have to expect the company to try to make money somehow. There are artists and devs to pay, plus hardware costs, bandwidth etc.
The thing is, you chose how much you want to spend instead of mindlessly forking over $15 a month.
You can buy potions from the cash shop to buff yourself for pvp. But that's neutralized if you are in group pvp, two can most always kill one no matter what.
Incense are another more or less required item, they lessen the death penalty. People buy them from the cash shop and put them on the auction house so you can buy them with gold.
Yes, the company is trying to squeeze some money out of you. But so far, they aren't squeezing very hard.

So, did they fix the one issue that drove me and countless others out yet? Incessant gold seller spam is an insult in a game where I already have to pay the company for extras.
I have tried many F2P games and they all turn into Pay to Win later in the game.
is this how Allods is? i havnt tried it yet.
A very brave topic name
Just looking at the screens of Allods, it looks so like WoW, it makes me sick.. But i guess that's a compliment for a lot of people.
I'm glad you like it... But you see how people talk of it being the most expensive game.. and i think they say it for a reason.
See you in a month or two, in a LFGame section of the forums
Every f2p will be like that. Those who spent time making and maintaining the game want money and I can't blame them. Every mmorpg needs money because it needs a continuous maintenance and upgrade. If you think that you'll get in the top without paying a $ you're wrong. They will make you pay either in $$ or in a big amount of time consumed. Now if I'm gonna pay in cash shop why not pay a subscription fee in a real mmo rather then in a "good for f2p" game? Plus in p2p nobody gets treated differently. Everyone obeys to the same rules.
I was waiting for a thread about Allods on the main forum.
I'm shocked this game hasn't had much discussion, its the most polished F2P game to ever release... it beats Runes of Magic if you ask me, which is a tough feat. The combat is smooth as fluid, the classes are unique and interesting, the endgame appears to be trying some new ship based system.
People will cry about cash shops until the end of time, plus its way overhyped. They fixed the "incense" problem, yet everyone acts like the game costs hundreds of dollars to play. People on this forum have this bizare sense of entitlement in regards to being equal to someone who puts some money into the game.
-------------------------
From what I heard Allods is the most expensive MMO in existance. Top loot on their item mall costs $7000. Who would buy that or play this game period. The idea that this is a P2P killer is just lolz.
What, specifically, costs 7000 dollars?
-------------------------
Unless you can post a link to a valid source, I'm going to say you are spreading Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt.
Yes, there's an ignore feature to block gold spammers. I wonder why people buy gold when they can buy something from the cash shop and auction it off in the AH for gold which is legit?
Well shave my back and call me an elf! -- Oghren
The link was from the Scott Jennings article on Macrotransactions. I always research my MMOs especially one I am thinking about playing. Allods is currently on my "NO" list.
I will have to agree with the OP.
Playing LOTRO for over 2.5 years, and having a glimpse at WoW, EQ2, as well as Aion and STO betas, and havign tried about every free MMO there is, Allods strikes me as a incredible jump in quality. This game is for MMO's what Avatar was for the movies recently. Now, I'm talking graphics ofc. Compring it to WoW as somone previously mentioned is utter nonsense and whoever says that has a) not played WoW or b) not played Allods. The graphics are insane at times, huge open spaces and detailed interiors, simply beautiful design matching that of the newest P2P MMO's. It might not use the newest fireworks like let's say AoC, but truth be told, AoC at its best looks not half as good as Allods - artists designed it, and its visible.
Fear of Death is being removed in a new patch, and the use of cash shop buffs should be drastically reduced soon seeing as they will last for 8h each, and can be also obtained via in game quest or bought cheap off AH. It will probably be possible to play all the time with the buff and never even open the cash shop. Time will tell.
Now, I am level 39, 1 level away from max, so I saw a lot of the game. The game has about everything you would expect from a newly released p2p game - with the exception that its free. It has exceptionally good controls and camera movement system, p2p (hell even FPS) standard at the least, not the clumsy jiggerish one you get in free games usually. It has a good amount of quests and they have as much variety as any of the p2p games on the market. There is a lot to do still - bugs, balance, features, stability. But frankly, no other game was in a better state at this stage. Not even p2p games. PvP is unbalanced but hell show me a game that has a balanced pvp in its first few years lol. It strikes me that a game can be so good and be free.. what is Blizzard and the other developpers spending the monthly cash on? I mean, WoW is a joke once you have seen Allods. But then WoW is a joke compared to anything...
Ultimatively, the choice is yours. If you are willing to spend 15/month, choose anything you like, but if you are short on cash and want a mmo that resembles p2p standards, has beautiful graphics and interesting world - Allods simply evaporates the competition. A p2p killer? Yes, it is heading there, but it can also collapse into the astral abyss if the developers keep making mistakes.
I am, and intend to get the max out of it, without ever spending a penny in the cash shop Making gold in this game is very easy (as was in LOTRO, but maybe it's just me), and you can buy everything you need with gold here.
Have fun.
My Guild Wars 2 First Beta Weekend "reviewette" : http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/post/4944570/thread/349125#4944570
"…but if you want a level 10 item rune, it’ll cost you $7000. Apparently, this already sold for $700 in the Russian version of Allods, so it’s not like there isn’t a precedent for really high-priced gear – gPotato just decided to grab the palladium-encrusted diamond ring. "
I bet the $7000 is a typo. He meant $700.
$700 seems outlandish. I'll have to look through the items in the shop.
I'm not as enthusiastic about Allods as Glad, the poster above, is but it's a damn good game. And the price is right.

@OP: I suggest you to play Allods to late 20s, then come back here and state your opinion. Allods is a very nice game, well polished, somewhat complex but still easy to learn; almost a dream come true for anyone bored to WoW, UNTIL you get to the part where PvP starts.
Afaik they have given up FOD mechanism but there's a new one; every time you die there's a chance one piece of your gear becomes 'cursed', giving negative modifiers to your stats insted of positive. The only way to 'fix' it is to spend money on CS. You can also find these 'cursed' items as a drop.
Also, buying these 'incense' potions from CS now gives you a buff that lasts for 30mins and gives you +250% boost to your damage. Good luck having fun in PvP as a freebie.
Translated patch notes for patch 1.1.0:

Edit: "I bet the $7000 is a typo. He meant $700." - No, it's not a typo. Level 10 runes for all 6 parts of your gear costs about $7000 total (yes, seven thousand american dollars)
You're free to have your own opinion, but this game Allods (while definitely being in the top 3 f2p games out there) doesn't even come CLOSE to having the amount of content, quality, or polish that games like LOTRO or EQ2 have. I mean it's not even in the same star system. Aion I could see it being closer to yes.
Yea, that sounds just as good as a P2P game.
Looking through Allods cash shop. The most expensive thing is a crafting tool called a rune extractor. It's 3000 golden potatoes or $30.
Most potions, etc are $2.
I don't plan on spending a penny.
