What are your top 8 Upcoming MMOs?

maskedweaselmaskedweasel Member LegendaryPosts: 12,195

With MMOs taking off and becoming mainstream, MMO fans are starting to get a plethora of  choices we didn't have before. Here is a list of upcoming games that I'm personally looking forward to and why I'm keeping a close eye on them.

8:  Xyson :   "The Apocalypse is at hand."   Post apocalyptic games are nothing new, though we haven't seen many in the MMO genre.  Xyson first intrigued me by its simple teraforming videos that showed players doing simple things such as cutting down trees or creating a road on a plot of land.  It expands on these sandbox features with skill based gameplay,  a player run economy, an "evolution" system, and even going as far to say they will have a form of Permadeath.   There have been a fair amount of games with tremendous feature lists, but this one is more than just a little appealing.  What I feel holds this back from being in the top 5 is simply that the development team is somewhat unknown and  they may be overambitious with their project, and this could turn away a strong sandbox player base that may not be willing to support a company through a Pay to Play Beta. Xyson is Scheduled to release  May of 2010.

7: TERA:  Highly graphical and stylized characters,  "direct" player impact on the game world, fast paced non auto-attack combat, and -- oh yes,  controller support on launch.  TERA has 6 different races to choose from and 8 different classes and the models look absolutely gorgeous.   As you can tell the art is Anime in style, so you'll see swords the size of people .  One issue with TERA is that the developers had taken code from another upcoming game -- Lineage 3 -- and used it for TERA, resulting in a lawsuit by NCSOFT and which resulted in a loss for BlueHole Studios.  What effects that will have on the game are unknown at this point, but it still remains a game to keep your eye on in the future.

6: The Agency :  One thing that caught my eye about the agency is that its kind of like the spy-thriller in the MMO genre.  We really haven't seen a game like this, in the sense that the games premise is that you work for competing agencies that allow you to become a trained operative in their employ.  Not much has been revealed about The Agency but what we do know is that it will be slated to release on the PS3 and that you will be able to create your own agency as well.  One could expect the gameplay to be very action oriented as it will be releasing with controller support, so gone will be the 10 skill bars full of skills.

5: DCUO: With my own recent disappointments in the Super Hero MMO genre I can't help but take notice at what SOEs focus with DCUO is.  Taking it the route Cryptic wanted to go, but just couldn't, they plan to release this game utilizing the widely known and highly popular DC Universe, and simultaneously release this game on consoles as well.  In a stark move seemingly in complete contrast to Cryptic,  Sony will not be requiring a monthly fee to play this game, and will only charge the Box sale price and perhaps Downloadable content or microtransational items (which have yet to be confirmed as to what extent this might, if at all, be expected).  What we do know is that they are touting a wide range of character customization options akin to other super hero games, two opposing factions and purportedly a class system based around cherry picking your powers.

4: Earthrise:  In the same vein as Xyson, yet set in a much more futuristic setting Earthrise is directed at the Sci-Fi lover in all of us.  No Class restrictions, a futuristic post-apocalyptic setting, character progression when you're both online and offline, and  FPS style targeting are just some eye catchers that make me really take notice of this game.  If you haven't taken the time to look up on some of the character and terrain models, you should.  From what I can see this game is shaping up to not only have a strong feature list, but the game looks great graphically as well. Heres a good in game video courtesy of MMORPG.com.  This would be my second most anticipated game if it weren't for the stagnant nature on the information released about it.  Though beta is supposedly under way there has been little on the hype level for the development team which makes me wonder how long the development cycle will last.

3: Final Fantasy XIV:  I hate chocobos, and the sequel to Final Fantasy XI isn't something I originally thought would be on my personal list of games I'm looking forward to as XI didn't really keep my interest past the first month.  What does interest me in this game is that for one, Square Enix is a fantastic developer,  two, the game will be releasing both on the PS3 and the PC, and three the armoury system.  The Armoury system isn't really new in theory,  you switch a weapon and suddenly you have a different play style,  but being able to work on whatever class you feel like at any instance is a big plus for me.  The classing system in FFXI was something I did enjoy tremendously, eventhough the flow of the game was too slow to peak prolonged interest,  the idea of being able to work on any various class via the Armoury system does excite me more than a little.  I also have a high quality MMO to look forward to in FFXIV as SE's production values are always high.

2: The Secret World:  Funcom is a little hush hush on this project... or so they'd like you to believe.  Dark Days are Coming, they say, but I beg to differ,   I feel that good days may finally come to Funcom if they can pull TSW off correctly.  Fighting your way in a twitch based, zombie killing, real world combat zone just sounds fun... but adding three different "secret" factions in an MMO setting and removing the need for classes and leveling really makes me want to believe in Funcom this time.  They know how to make games, and though plenty of people feel they've been burned by them before,  TSW offers something the genre hasn't seen before, and thats the game setting.  The game revolves around urban legends in the very real world urban settings which could turn out to be one of the first, if not the first, real horror MMORPGs if they choose to take it in that direction.

1: Star Wars The Old Republic:  You may ask why this is number one, or some of you may already know, but there are many reasons why SWTOR is my number one upcoming MMO.  The features sound similar to much of what we've seen before, so in some sense you could argue that BioWare isn't rocking the boat too hard when they began developing this game.  What can we expect though?  Fast pased RPG combat with no auto-attack.  A complex, non-linear story based progression system.  Supposedly hundreds of hours of story based content available for groups and solo players alike per character.  Vast, open worlds spanning the breadth of the Star Wars Galaxy thousands of years before Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker was alive.  The sheer content of the game and the supposed ability to share that content, and have those you share it with to effect it in unpredictable ways sounds like an RPG gamers dream to me.  Sprinkle on that its fully voiced, the iconic star wars weapons and races from both the EU, movies and games will be appearing, and each character will have their own story with plenty of alignment choices to progress your characters skills and its hard for this RPG fan to ignore it as my most watched upcoming game.

    There are 8 upcoming MMOs?

All kidding aside, I'm barely looking forward to a handful of games let alone 8 (I have no faith in this genre anymore).  The worst thing to do is hype somthing up (Warhammer - cough) only to have those expectations set waaay too high.

    3. SWTOR - I'm not really a fan of Star Wars or Bioware games in general but the Bounty Hunter class intrigues me.  As long as there is meaningful PvP I could see myself enjoying the game.

    2. Earthrise - An indie company doesn't give me much hope anymore but their concepts sound good on paper.

    1. FFXIV - I love Square Enix and have a lot of faith in the company plus I have been impressed with the mentality of the producers in the interviews recently.

I"m not really an mmo "jumper" in that once  I have a game I'll play it until something radically changes. So no plans on leaving Aion or LOTRO.

Having said that, I'm going to try Tera, Secret World and World of Darkness as I like to at least try them all just to experience them.

That's pretty much it for me.

edit: oh, forgot, I'm gonig to try SWToR.

    6. Blizzard's unannounced MMO project - obviously no details yet, but wouldn't it be great if it was the anti-wow? It'd be genius on their part.

    5. Guild Wars 2 - definitely keeping my eye on this one

    4. The Secret World - got some interesting concepts there.

    3. SW: ToR - not going to lie has me a little worried but I have a lot of faith in Bioware.

    2. FFXIV - if anyone is able to give us a unique game its going to be Square Enix - I just hope it "fits" for me.

    1. WoW: Cataclysm - yeah I know.. it's wow.... boo hoo... still a great game and I think only will be better from Cataclysm. It'll be nice to be able to start over with a new experience from the very beginning after playing off and on for 5 years.

    1: SW:TOR

    2: DCUO

3: MUO (Marvel Universe Online, yes my friends one day it will be a reality. *At least I hope.*)

    4: The Secret World

    5: World of Darkness

    6: Guild Wars 2

    7: Asheron's Call 3  (It'd be #1 if I actually thought it'd ever happen.)

APB  been playing lots of shooters lately: Fallout 3, Resident Evil 5, Left 4 Dead 2, Team Fortress 2, and Borderlands. I got to play a two week playtest of APB and I'm pretty sure I will be picking this up when it releases.

The Old Republic  Always been a Star Wars fan. And have always been impressed with Bioware games.

Cataclysm   Lots of friends and family play. Should be fun to see how the developers reshape the world.

I would say World of Darkness, but I don't think it will ever come out. And I'm sure it wouldn't be able to meet my expectations.

    1. Guild Wars 2 - I absolutely think this is going to be a huge hit for ArenaNet, even bigger than the original. My favorite game and my favorite developer.

    2. FFXIV - So excited about this game. FFXI was my first mmo and now I get the chance to play the sequel. Square Enix is one of my favorite developers. The best parts about FF Online games is that they are good games and they come with a fantastic player community.

    3. The Old Republic -  It is Starwars, it is Bioware, enough said. It's going to be fun! Been playing Bioware games since NWN and I don't see that changing.

    4. The Secret World -  It is always fun smashing demons and zombies not to mention we get to do some puzzle solving.

    5. Torchlight MMO - The single player was a ton of fun and Runic Games rocks big time. They know how to make a fun game and I see their mmo being nothing but good and fun to play.

    6. Undead Labs Zombie MMO -  The mmo is being made for consoles and Jeff Strain is making it. Console+zombie smashing is a definite win in my book. We probably will not see the release for quite awhile.

    7. Dust514 - I love shooter games and if I can releax in my favorite chair and kick back while playing it on my ps3 then I'll be happy. Need to see more of the game though!

    8. Unannounced console MMO by Turbine - I'm giving them once last chance to win me over because Lotro was a big disappointment for me.

There are not many mainstream big budget MMOs in development.  But those are likely the only games in development that stand a chance of being released with the content, polish and quality to grab a signifigant market share.  In no particular order.

SWTOR -  I doubt I will like the game design but I love Bioware.  I have enjoyed lots of games where I have hated the game design.  I expect SWTOR to be one of those type of games.

FF14  -  Probably the best bet to be a good quality game.  Console control issues and no levels scares me.

EQ Next - Could be Vanguard 2 which would be wonderful.  Hopefully SOE will steal as much as they can from Vanguard and this game will turn out to be what vanguard could have been if it was funded and developed and not another bad game no one plays like EQ2.

Carbine's new MMO without a title  -  Some really quality devs and some cool ideas for crafting, diplomacy and copying Warhammer's PQ system.

Blizzard's new MMO without a title -  It seems they can do no wrong.  But if the rumors are true and its a shooter MMO?  Ouch.

Guild Wars 2 -  Hopefully it will be mroe of a MMO than GW1.  But it has a lto of hype and could be big.

Heroes of Telara - I put this game in here with a lot of trepidation.  Trion claims to have raised $100 million and they do have some gerat devs being led by Hartman but the way they have treated thier fanbase so far is beyond anything even SOE or Funcom would do.  Almost no information and complete silence for the last 7 months.  It would not surprise me to see this game be cancelled.  They do have some info schedulded to be released next week which could be a build up to E3.  But given their dubious record so far I will wait for them to prove me wrong.

Off hand I can't think of an 8th game that can match these games budgets or dev teams.  I suppose we could put Secret world in here but likely it will be a juveline scam game made to extract money from the immature kiddie market like AoC.  I would add Elder Scrolls Online or Fallout Online to the list if the rumors are indeed true.

So far 5 new MMO's and one 2 expansions have me interested, I cant say 8 games have caught my attenion just yet on the MMO market, just these 7 titles for varying reasons.

One wonders when MMO developers will wise up, the post wow landscape for MMO's is very different to what it was pre-wow. Games need to be accessable to a degree (atleast some part of it) though wow takes care of the entry level MMO needs. But most importantly what they need to do now is launch with enough content to take a player from first level to max level (or from starting point to end game ready if its a skills based game). The Cryptic model of release 1/4 finished game with bare minimum content and then develope on the strength of subscriptions this gets wont work. The amount of players that hype up every new MMO shows that the market is proof that gamers are looking for more, with 11 million active wow players and probably twice that in people that tried and didnt stick to it, thats a massive potential audience.  But while everyone loves to hate on wow, simple fact is its a polished game with content for every level of play and every level of player.  Its like an old sweaty pair of slippers, you hate it when you get your nose to close to them, but on those days when you really want to just relax at home, you know you can slip them on and find a small comfort.

Unfortunatly this means that MMOs that release unfinished will generally flounder and die, or spend a year in mediocrity before finally achieving something that if they had provided when they launched, would have made a much bigger impact.

That said MMO gamers are guillable for hype, me included.....

    So in reverse order.

    7:- Xyson

Its a game thart seems to get a lot right, its also an attempt at something different and new and unless we want the mmo Market to stagnate then we need a few of these smaller scale innovative titles to do well enough that the big boys take notice.  Xyson looks  to have some very nice graphics and an interesting premise, how the gameplay shapes up is always the main factor in MMO's for me, so I will wait and see, but I will be keeping a squinted eye on this one.

6:-  Age of Conan Rise of the Godslayer (Expansion)

I havent tried the original, I am just downloading the trial as I type this, but everything I have read about it has been posative and it seems Funcom have learned fast from the burning they took at the original release of AOC.    The expansion looks interesting progressive and without fundamentally changing the game.  Also its something of a rarity a Fuedal Jrpg style setting in a western MMO style game.  The lovely Jade Empire ish setting and the new features that enrich the game have me hopeful that this expansion will see AoC have something of a renaissance period.

    5:- World of Warcraft, Cataclysm.

Ok let me set the record straight, I had a love hate relationship with Vanilla wow at endgame, but the leveling experience was fantastic.  TBC improved on both the end game and the leveling experience massvly, WotLK brought the BEST leveling experience and immersive play but destroyed the end game for me.  To the point where I have quit wow, I hate what they are doing to my beloved rogue class in the expansion yet I cant help but feel curious and I will admit it, hopeful for this expansion.  If nothing else, I will level my toons casually through it, just because the depth of wows leveling game is still on a basic level fun and an amazign achievement.  However with WotLK what blizzard have done is change this from being my number 2 and competing for number 1 to number 5.  Wow wont die not in the sense a lot of  people hope for, but with the amount of fresh new titles on their way, Blizzard have gone from being years ahed of the game, to feeling a bit "old".  I hope I am wrong, but it may turn out to be that Pre-Nef Kael'thas 25 man was the pinnacle of blizzards behamoth.

    4:-  DC Universe

Not much of a logical reasoning behind this as details are thin on the ground, but being given a quest by Batman, that has a lot of potential.  The MMO scene is ripe for a really good (and sorry CoH/CoV and CO you do not make the grade here) super hero game.  If DC universe can deliver this, in the best super hero setting at the moment with decent combat and gameplay then they have the IP to make a big splash.  It makes number 4 purely on the possability of Batman asking me to "Fetch me 10 Joker teeth".

Here is where it gets tricky 1-2-3 are very close together.

    3:- Tera online

This game looks amazing, the gameplay sounds fantastic the artwork is a cut above most games full stop the animation looks smooth, if the actual gameplay is as good as it sounds this one will be a winner.  I have been burned before and the low level of hype around this title is both offputting and reassuring.

    2- Final Fantasy XIV online

I played the first one for a while, in its early days, it was a fantastic group based MMO, untill you realised it was just one big grind.  At which point it lost a lot of its appeal, that and the fact that in ts early days the classes were very unbalanced and the community a little too elitist.  "No you cant group with us unless you have the VERY best gear possible and you have the current FOTM class combo" as a DPS, but if you played a tank or healer you got constant tells nagging you for groups from the same people.

My hope is that SE introduce a bit more solo friendly content while keeping the best gear and fastest leveling in the hands of the groups and improve the deep crafting system from their previous FF online title while making it a little more intuative.

1- Star Wars the Old Republic

verything Bioware touches turns to solid Platinum gaming goodness, the Baldurs Gate series, Plane scape torment, Never winter nights (this is more a gift to the gaming world than anything) through to the current flagship games.  Everything has been released with polish, verve hype and no matter how hyped their games were, they played better.   Whats more every Bioware game given me hundreds of hours of enjoyment without fail, I still go back to NWN and the BG games, I still play through ME 1 and Jade Empire, and I still love ME 2 and Dragon Age.  I may sound fanboyish but the truth is they have never dissapointed me with a game yet.

For The Old Repiblic Bioware have promised me a deep immersive story driven MMO in every sense of the word, a bioware adventure I can share with friends and....

It has lightsabers :- colour me sold I am checking every week to see if I can pre-order the collectors edition... it will be mine.

    1. All points bulletin- I love Grand Theft auto and an mmo version looks like a great change from the norm for me.

    2. Guildwars 2- Always loved guildwars though I never played for long can't wait to see guildwars 2.

    3. TERA- Great imagery, and great design team behind it.

To be honest these are the only 3 games I am actually looking forward to atm, but then again I haven't been looking at that many upcoming mmo's lately. Oh yeah almost forgot Cataclysm is something I am also keeping my eye although its not an upcoming mmo in and of itself.

Good topic OP. 8 might be pushing, so i'll go in most anticipated order:

    1. Warhammer 40k Online - Surprised nobody has mentioned it so far, but I have high hopes for it on the basis of the IP alone.

    2. Got to be SW:ToR, just to see what bioware can come up with. I have concerns, but far too early to let that hamper excitement.

    3. Guild Wars 2 - if the concept art is anything to go by, this is going to be something special.

    4. Final Fantasy XIV - Interesting mechanics, dissapointing gameplay videos so far though. Still, one to watch for sure.

    5. TERA - Just to see how gameplay works.

    6. Dust 514 - MMOFPS. nuf' said.

    7. Planetside Next - See above.

    8. Not exactly new but ima go with Cataclysm. See what WoW's last big hoorah is like.

    1) World of Darkness Online - An setting I love with one of the only MMO companies left that I think highly of.

    2) "Copernicus" - Hey, it's Curt Schilling, R.A. Salvatore and Todd McFarlane. I'm a huge Baseball fan (played it all my life), loved R.A.'s additions to  FR (look at my avatar, duh), and I dig McFarlane's art style.

    3) FFXIV - Just to check a FF MMO off my "have played" list. Loved the older FF games for Nes and SNES. Haven't liked the recent "futuristic looking" versions of FF though.

Those are the only games that are worth playing to me even when considering how little is known about them. If the Warhammer 40K game isn't another themepark forumla game then I will give it a try. TOR will get a play depending solely on the released information regarding their crafting system and whether I like it or not.

Those are the only 4 games that I've put any real thought into playing. Everything else I may keep up with just because I like to know what's going on but I don't have any interest in playing.

    Edit: Forgot FFXIV
