I hope that they have large scale PvP, after all, Star Wars inside an arena don't sound very Star Wars like.
Taking multiple hits to kill someone with a blaster or light sabre doesn't sound very Star Wars, either.
Typical MMO devs - talking about capturing the action of the movies, when the combat is nothing like them.
The funny thing is that one hit kills would destroy any chances at having the combat look anything like the movies at all.
Because the movies are ridiculously unreal when it comes to that; everyone would get oneshotted by blasters or lightsabers on the spot without any choreographies whatsoever.
That movie was ridiculously awesome btw, haven't seen anything like that in any mmo I've played up to this point; the exciting thing is that they're thinking of escape abilities, positioning and dynamic pvp; something only WoW (and WAR for a bit) has really done well imo.
Feel free to use my referral link for SW:TOR if you want to test out the game. You'll get some special unlocks!
Man, I can't decide what class I want to play... Because you know once you start getting into the story and playing through it and getting immersed you're not going to want to stop. So that makes that initial choice very important. I'm thinking Bounty hunter for the win. We also don't know how many character we're going to be able to have per server, or if we'll be able to mix Republic and Empire characters... I just want to play this game right freaking NOW!!!

The gfx and gameplay remind me of Champions Online.
Reminds me more of the feel of the comic books than the movies, but I think it's unrealistic with the current computer hardware to expect movie-style CGI quality gameplay, except perhaps in cut-scenes. The combat/battle system again appears unique to me, after all there aren't that many games with light sabres in them apart from Star Wars universe-based ones. Anyway, I think it great to see Bioware showcasing the battle system, I think not only are we talking a plot heavy solo friendly immersive mmo, we are also talking about one that will have great and complex PvP too. Reads like a bast of a game and one I certainly will be trying next year. I hope Bioware give the game a decently long open beta test too, that will flush out many of the launch bugs/issues that other mmo companies manage to miss by rushing. With games like Dragon Age and Mass Effect proving such huge hits, I think Bioware can and should take there time with SW:TOR, as at the moment nothing has yet taken the mmo crown away from the ageing WoW.
Well, it certainly was an interesting video showing combat. My only concern was all of the droids being killed. I can see the droid killing as a possible grindfest to another level "-there are 10,000 doids out there. I have given you a new light saber. You must go and kill all 10,000 droids to get to the next level of Jedi." I just hope this doesn't happen.
Anyway, I think it great to see Bioware showcasing the battle system, I think not only are we talking a plot heavy solo friendly immersive mmo, we are also talking about one that will have great and complex PvP too.
On what are you basing that claim?

Based on this video, combat overall still needs a TON of polish to be enjoyable (although, there are performance issues present everywhere in that video so it's just a fault of it being recorded on an early build version of the game). Only glaring details I've noticed is how there are no flying limbs or droids being dismantled when they get hit by a lightsaber AND that lightsaber duels now actually look half-decent with some actual interactional animations, not just 2 guys pounding hitting one another with randomly chosen attack animations.
Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing.

WIth the exception of the BH aerial moves, the combat looks very MMO-standard, just with a SW skin.

The mmorpg article isn't really written from a fan perspective, but if you read online articles where they go through the videos in minutiae of detail you will note that there appears to be open PvP, and complex moves are capable by the classes previewed. The graphics presented by Bioware now are likely to be lower than will be possible in the release version of the game as Bioware are most likely still tinkering with things like shaders and frame rates for higher end PC systems.
they talk alot of taking the combat to a new lvl but all i hear is what every developer say about there game and its just the same as the rest nothing really new. and they show the jedi alot and thats what gona sell the game but its not what i want to see. 1000 jedis and 50 troopers thats what where gona see in the game, it should really be the other way around. sure i will OB test it when i can but im not hyped over the game will just wait for testing it and see.

I think the Infiltrator and Smuggler looked great.
The Infiltrator uses "on demand" cover and undoubtably stealth mechanics while the smuggler uses a lot more movement and positioning via cover and moving from cover to cover.
I mean, sure I'm excited to bash and slice face as a Jedi or Sith, or melt some face with the Force, but as they said the Infiltrator/Smuggler looks to be the most tactical and to me most interesting.
I do trust Bioware very much, however I just hope they really do balance the 8 classes well, and for the love of God PLEASE do not use a rock/paper/scissors PvP balance system... I'd rather NOT know before the fight even starts if I am likely to win or lose based on my class vs. their class.
Still.. things looking REALLY good, very pumped for this game.

That's very vague and speculative.

I don't know what games you've been playing, but way more realism has been possible for years. It's more an issue of art style. Champions Online doesn't even try to be realistic. It goes for a simple cartoon look that lacks detail or even personality. SWTOR vids don't look quite that bad, but it does look like they're going for a somewhat similar sort of cartoonish look, rather than high-detail realism.
I don't think the problem is the lack of (attempted) realism exactly, so much as the lack of detail that sort of cartoonish style tends to involve. Tends to make for rather lackluster visuals, at best.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
This look awesome, i'm glad Bioware is behind it, we can expect great things.
Aye,
I personally think that there are only a few companies that can pull these huge projects off as they planned it without to much involvement from investors/publishers trying to push things in a certain direction.
Only companies like Blizzard and Bioware have this luxus, and we all know how Blizzards latest MMO project worked out.
WE also know what happened to most other MMO's since then, they got pushed intoo early releases by investors/publishers.
And thats why i think that SW:ToR can be the next great thing, weather you like it or not, Bioware has the luxus of developing a game they like to play themselves.
Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

Just like dozens of Agt. Smiths didn't make the second Matrix movie cooler, thousands of Sith and Jedi won't make this game cooler.
Now, I understand that the time period covered excuses the abundance of Force-users (which is probably why they chose it), but it won't make it any more fun as a game experience.
How the heck do you balance special and powerful individuals like Jedi with other classes? Perhaps have two types of accounts - one Force user or a host of other characters (say 5 or 10 slots). In PvP - make one Sith or Jedi match up versus 5 mundane characters?

thats the problem when they make jedi like a normal class its nothing at all like the movies where a jedi can take on a army. SWG had a good way to deal with it when it first came out but ofc they had to redo jedi into a normal class so you get more jedis then the other classes. thats what gona happend in this game.

a few things missing from this video, lightsaber crackles, and a little more fast paced combat, I understand they have the powers that make the people jump up and have a downward slash or stuff, but it looks to stationary, pretty much looks like any mmo out there with glowy swords though.
MMOs played: Too many Watch List: FFXIV, CoH:GR, GW2, SWTOR, TERA, Earthrise
As some others have observed, I do like the demo of new skills. If they could do some more variations of character defeat that would make this game skyrocket IMO. Someone from the game trailer site pointed out they would like to see robots sliced in half when finished off by a lightsaber. My sentiments exactly!
I would get an epic feeling (i.e. Player reward ) if there were "fatalities" in this game. Maybe even make a foe defeat benefit the player/party ( a buff, knockback an enemy group, cause an enemy group disorientation, etc).

Yes! I say we make all MMO combat real - 1 hit kills with light sabres. After all, who cares about immersion breakers such as gameplay mechanics.

To be honest , the combat looks alot like Champions Online and STO... and that is not good thing.
They talk over and over how combat will feel "epic", when in fact there is so much "meh" in this video , that its only "epic" thing about it.
That was.. hmm.. interesting didn't really get that "wow" factor but it looked ok..
