It all comes down to the subscribers. If subs fall due to the introduction of Cash Shops in p2p games, they will abolish them, if not, then the community is equally responsible.

I quit eq2 for fallen earth because of the soe cash shop, and I will quit fallen earth too if they do something similar.

The only power as a consumer is to vote with your wallet remember that.

No one and nothing is irreplacable, even your current beloved mmo title.

Cash shops are here to stay.  More of us have jobs which equates to more money than time to put into games.  Those of us with money like onlilne games.  Online games will go to the money not the basement or young people with no money.

Here's what I don't get though:  Did the cash shop suddenly make it not fun to do today what was fun the day before?  How did the value proposition change if some other people could pay money for something you didn't want/need?

I can also roleplay the tower in a chess game and shout "is that a peasant at the horizon I see? I will smash it I will! Oh damn I broke one of my merlons!". -- maji

HEY MMO PLAYERS - STOP BEING STUPID, AND STOP BUYING THINGS THAT YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE TO BUY. YOU'RE RUINING IT FOR ALL OF US,  AND PAINTING DOLLAR SIGNS ON OUR HEADS!

    Ta-daaa~~.

I agree with quoted poster.  This was just a simple PSA.  However, some forum posters seem to need to blow everything up.

Really, I think this was meant to be simple.  All you guys out there that feel lured into buying fluff or expansions...don't.  Granted, I don't see an MMO revolution happening any time soon.  When the new WoW xpac comes out people will be lined up in droves waiting to shell out their hard earned money.  It would take a large majority of the people not buying it to actually cause a company to do something about it.  Good luck trying to organize that in this industry.

They make games for people like you that want instant gratification.  They are called SINGLE PLAYER GAMES.  The whole point to a RPGMMO is what I've already discussed, a fantasy virtual ever expanding universe.  I really don't understand why people don't just buy Halflife2 (or crysis) and download all the multiplayer mods (there are dozens).  God knows they are far more entertaining, the wait times are exponentially shorter for time-to-fun factor, and the games play smooth and look good.  The way some of these MMO's are built with all the "instances" it's the same as joining a server for free in many other multiplayer games.  Call a rose by any other name and it's still a rose.  I'd rather have an in depth immersive journey carefully scripted for hundreds of hours of gameplay and a real sense of accomplishment and reward throughout the experience.  This is what these companies are stealing from you.

Lol so its back to this again.  As has been pointed out many times in the past, I'm not beholden to you or anyone else to decide what kind of games I should play.  If I like to solo my ass off in MMORPGs, that is exactly what I'm going to do.

I am not responsible for preserving the kind of gaming experience YOU like, especially if it means giving up the kind I like.

When I know up front that a game is a for-profit business that will make money off of me in any way they can, then no one is stealing anything from me.  I clicked "I agree", which means, well, "I agreed"

edit: Derrrr whooops.  Logged in from a different computer that had a different acct name on it.  This is fnorgby from earlier in the thread.  Not trying to sockpuppet :-

Everyone wants to earn money but there is a limit to things. And the players didn't agree to let SOE and Blizzard open up cashshops in their games, they just did it one day and the player can either quit or live with it.

I don't mind paying for a game but I rather cough up a single sum when I buy the game or a monthly fee then to pay for all small kinds of crap also.

If they actually are losing money they should just raise the sub price instead. I don't mind paying 20 or even 25 bucks a month or 200 bucks for a life time fee.

I like the feeling when you get something cool and people ask you about it, I work hard to get my stuff and now can any noob get it directly for 25 bucks or so, it takes away my motivation to get any items myself. There are more things in a MMO than loot but the current ones actually have loot as it biggest motivation. No they take that away without adding something else.

Sure, if you make a RPG and base things on story or make a skill based games where items are similar and people just pay to look a certain way it is not a problem but to games like Wow and EQ2 it is turning into a disaster.

Why would anyone work really hard to get an item you just can buy fast? And why would I play a game which main point is just to make me buy virtual crap?

I played WoW since release. I put up with the first few additions to the "pet shop." I even bought them! (Yes, I'm a sucker and love vanity pets >.>). But with the sparkle pony I just realized it wasn't ever going to end. Who the heck would be crazy enough to say no to an easy 4 million or so? 4 million in a day for one mount... If I owned an MMO and people would pay that I would do it in a heartbeat. That said, I don't want to have to keep forking out money to pay for xyz mount or pet, or watch other people do so. I'd rather pay 20 bucks a month, even 25. That combined with the downhill quality of the game (all in my opinion of course) is why I finally quit. After trying a few other MMOs there's nothing worth playing out there for me.

I learned my lesson with WoW though. I REFUSE to pay for a subscription AND a cash shop. I could afford to do so, but I'd rather earn things in game than fork over some money for them. It means more to me when I actually earn it. Some people are cool with it, good for them. I'm glad they still enjoy WoW or whatever they play, but I'm just here waiting for something worth playing. I don't have much hope for the next few years though :(

Well it's been several weeks since this thread was started and look where we are at today.  LoTRO and Fallen Earth are as good as garbage now.  StarTrek and COH2 are still up to their money sucking antics, SOE has decided to sell ponies in their store.. and no light at the end of the tunnel.  Welcome to the future of MMO gaming.  Give me your money,  then give it to me again... and again.. and again.. and again.  Not for me.

That shows you don't understand MMOs at all. You act as if you define what it should be.

I have news for you .. developers are less dense and can understand what entertains and what players are willing to pay for. So i like instances and lobby features (dungeon finder .. best feature Blizz came up this year and very popular), and i am willing for pay $15 to play the game (and so do millions of others). Sue me.

BTW, tell me where i can also play an auction house in half life 2?

May be you should leave MMOs if you like it so little. There are millions more who are more than happy to play, you know.

    A lesson from history:

White Dwarf is a good example of a gaming magazzine that took a commerical direction and what happened to it. It originaly was a roleplaying magazine featuring articles on any RPG’s around, it was very well respected at the time. Years pass and Games Worshop decided to make the magazine cover only in house games. So all you got was Warhammer essentialy. Roleplayers left in droves, every single person I knew who read it went on to drop it. But it still went on strong appealing to kids who liked spikey bits.

So I foresee a lot of old gamers leaving but the genre will survive with its new more younger players. This time though its not as easy to see where the old timers will go.
