I have never seen such amazing texture work. I know this is an mmo, but come on now this looks like 2000 or 2001 texture work.
Most MMORPGs textures look pretty bad on close up. WAR is pretty bad, ground of Aion too, and WoW is only rescued by it's comic style which doesn't make people miss any sorts of details.
Well I have just started playing Warhammer, and when I run around the game world I find myself appreciating the graphics of this MMO. It really looks nice, and has a good atmosphere. Of course I do not run up to trees to admire the bark, nor do I find myself running around staring at ground textures. This, of course, is simply my opinon.

I think you are probably appraching it from the perspective of someone who actually notices such details. I think most people take the larger picture in.
Also, some deves want the game to be easy to play on lower systems so they sacrifice a bit. In Aion one of the devs even made that remark but that they were thinking of releasing a high rez version of the game.
I'm sure if I was paid to notice textures I could or if I set my mind to it. But otherwise I just take it as just one large tapestry.
I mean, after all, you aren't going to walk up to a Seurat painting and start saying that the whole thing is just dots.

Dude with those craptastic textures it still played like crap until they updated their texture manager whatever that means. That's mythic talk for we have no idea how to program and figured out why our game plays like Crysis and looks like a game from 2003. Sorry dude game looks horrid still sure it plays better but big deal. Last I checked it was 2010 not 2003.

Could you please write that again? this time in English please.

You are talking about two different things.
I agree, the game played like crap in many ways and that may very well be because they didn't do it "right". So that's one thing.
But that is something different than making a game's textures that are easier on the system.
Let's put it this way, imagine if they did put more detail into their textrues. Where would THAT have left us?
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
You can make textures look nice using art, in other words the art looks like crap, textures look dull and drab, tree bark doesnt look like that. The engine has no aa, no af built into it, no ssao or HBAO, and it doesn't even use full DX9 calls for spells. That's using DX8 (yep read up on it). Also their using gamebryo 2.2, its about 7 yrs old. Sorry but the game looks like crap, it doesn't have to have shader 4 or Dx10 but it needs to look good. It's basically a chopped up sliced up DAOC engine. I mean load up DAOC textures look better in that game. It boggles my mind how their previous game looks better than their newer game.
side by side comparisons of DAOC and WAr coming next.

I love it when people who have no idea of what they are talking about, makes posts.
Sounded like English to me. This is not English 101 its a forum site. I think this is English let me check.
Have a nice day.
This is not an Eglish 101 forum, it is a gaming forum. For effective communication in that forum, we use the English language. To effectively communicate, we have rules of English we follow. Therefore, every forum is an English forum, for if you cannot communicate effectively, it doesn't matter if it is a gaming forum or a cooking forum.
For example, this is not a typing forum, yet, I need to have some level of typing skills to use it. Same holds true for grammar.
Using the typing example:
Poster 1: pwpsioefha sxcfkL'NAEO[
Poster 2: what? i can't understand your typing
Poster 1: get off my back, this isn't a typing forum!
Poster 2: fine, I'll continue to not understand you........
-----------------------------------------------
But not to derail the topic. Warhammer did fine with its graphics. It is low end by design, but I think the art direction made uip for that, just as WoW did with their graphics.
More detailed textures don't equal good graphics. Good art direction equals good graphics. You can have high poly/texture heavy graphics and they still are crap (EQ2/VG imo) due to bad art direction, or you can have low poly/textures with great art direction and have something to look at (WAR/WoW imo).
But it is all opinion. I like WAR's graphics, the fact that they have low end textures didn't occur to me as a bad thing until I saw this thread. To each his own.
Why not zoom into the DAoC textures as closely as you did for WAR?
No MMO's textures hold up under scrutany. For the very reason people have restated in this thread endless times. These games need to run on a broad range of systems, not just yer mega-gaming rig that is designed for crysis.
If you zoom into any MMO's textures they will be pixilated and blurry, that's because every MMO has to saccrifice texel density for performance. Now stop trying to rip apart an MMO on a few low texel density objects and judge it on the whole picture, no one gets close to a tree in an MMO and judges it based on the tree bark filling their screen.
Really so what did not make sense your just a blind fanboi.
DAOC has char shadows, better lighting and world shadowing, WAR doesnt. Why?
DAOC looks much nicer if you ask me. Maybe not the chars but the world way better.
why yes, those textures are very nice.
but Warhammer wasn' trying to go for realistic and the entirety of the world seems stylized. It's like in my Seurat example. You're really not to get up close as they aren't meant to be looked at in that way.
I'm sure if I got up close and personal in wow I'd find that it was a swirly mess.
I think you are trying to compare apples to oranges as Warhammer's art style is stylized. Now you might not agree with their choice but I would say the whole world is very stylized and not very realistic. Whereas the above image is very realistic.
I wasnt' able to find a whole lot but I think if I was to zoom in a bit on this it wouldn't really hold up:
This is runes of magic. That rock doesn't hold up to close scrutiny.
Allod's seems to do a pretty good job but it could be that that type of tree is easier to render in a more stylized way.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
Others say that many games approach to realism creates overly grimey textures. The stone in the wall is tiled so they have a grime sheet over it to break up the repetition, a classic trick but makes the rock noisy and non-descript. There are flaws to every system, we can't all be god of war 3 and run on a Pentium 5 with an nvidia card from 7 years ago, ya know.
Stylized artwork actually holds up better up close then detailed art does. Stylized art blends colors with low contrast between light and darks, which means the textures compress to DDS with less noise and thus hold up when the object is scaled up. Detailed textures have more extreme's between highlights and shadow so the pixilization is more evident when the texture is stretched.
Woot: high five for ashenvale, I made that zone . And Dustwallow.. and hinterlands.. and crap that was long ago.
WAR is like WoW in this aspect. The GFX technology is crap but the artistic quality is quite high. Atleast on the chaos side, take a look at a fully decked Choosen or Magus and you will see what I mean.
i usually tune down the texture quality because on the highest setting it mostly looks like photos glued to n-sided-styrofoam-objects.

EDIT: A game that really nailed it in this perspective is Vanguard btw. Epic viewing distance, great artistic interpretations and overall atmosphere...
I have never seen such amazing texture work. I know this is an mmo, but come on now this looks like 2000 or 2001 texture work.
Nowhere near as bad as WoW or something of the like. The reason its like this is because that is the Warhammer art style, always has been. They wanted it to look like painted miniatures and they succeeded.
I like warhammers artistic style. is it the best graphical game out there? no.
Does it come together well? yeah.
It's just like WoW or EQ2 they look like ass when u look up close but the overall art direction is nice and it gives the games a nice vibe.
Art direction it is ok. Champions online has a better art direction, so doesn't Aion, startrek and many other recently released MMOs. AOC still blows all those games away with both arts and graphics.

Yeah ill agree with that War isnt the best looking game but I still like the style. Both Aion and AoC destroy it in the art and graphics department.

Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)
Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)
Yeah but thats pretty horrible. Just makes me yak. Check this one out its my favorite. Thats a Tree.

My gaming blog
I never, ever see how TEXTURE DETAIL does improve overall visual quality.
I know 95% of the MMORPG people consider texture quality the #1 category when judging overall visual quality.
Maybe you guys can tell me why?
When I enter a game, the things that create immersion for me are
#1 - Overall lighting, color, haze.
#2 - Modelling and artistic design.
#3 - Viewing distance.
i usually tune down the texture quality because on the highest setting it mostly looks like photos glued to n-sided-styrofoam-objects.
