I have seen videos a higher leveled character, the combat speed is slightly slower than WoW. Don't judge this game until the 2nd wave of beta tests. Its not complete, laggy, and doesn't even have 1/5 of the content (beta 2 will only have 1/5, the rest will only be avail. on release)
The global cooldown is different for every ability. If you, for example, use "Bloodbath" ability, the cooldown is almost nonexistant and you can attack again almost immediately.
On top of this, in the retail version different weapon types will most likely have different cooldowns as well.
I think if its different for every ability then its not a global cooldown.

From what I've read and seen up to this point it seems the game does this.. You have a variety of actions at your disposal based on few different factors like your weapon and some other choices. Depending on what you choose triggers the timer and depending on that choice is how fast things come back with a lot of factors determining this.
So that means number cruncher players are going to have a field day bitching at one another in groups about the choice made.
An example; and I note this is PURE SPECULATION ON MY BEHALF and I'm human and often wrong so.. If you're a pugalist (fancy word for FF's typical Monk class) you can attack normally, pick a weapon specific attack, use an ability (I'd assume heals or crit chance ups) the first one resets your choice quickly, the weapon attack has a drawn out animation and a slightly longer wait, then typically your abilities will trigger a longer wait yet, but have the most beneificial affect.
I kill other players because they're smarter than AI, sometimes.
Well I absolutely despise fast paced combat. We are playing a MMORPG so combat should be more than brainless button smashing. Everquest 1, FF XI did it right so I'll hope they keep it that way. Didn't like the way Everquest 2, World of Warcraft and even worse Aoc were handling combat.
If slow combat is keeping away the "me now entertain" crowd I'm quite happy.
We need a MMORPG Cataclysm asap, finish the dark age of MMORPGS now!
"Everything you're bitching about is wrong. People don't have the time to invest in corpse runs, impossible zones, or long winded quests. Sometimes, they just want to pop on and play." "Then maybe MMORPGs aren't for you."
If you're a pugalist (fancy word for FF's typical Monk class)
Just wanted to say that it's not a typical FF Monk class. It uses hand-to-hand weapons, and that's it.
It resembles more of a warrior-monk-thief-ninja than anything else.
There's still a reason for them to have changed the names. The classes can't be locked into one role like you'd do with "White Mage", "Paladin", "Black Mage" and so on.

This is actually incorrect, the pace of combat through out is actually slower than the combat you will find in FFXI. FFXIV is more akin to the FF games that used the ATB gauge or w/e it was called. Before you can even perform an attack you have to wait till you have lets say .. points... to do so and those don't start generating until the moment you engage in combat. So no lol the combat speed never reaches anything close to WoW, AoC, CO or anything else.
And before someone gets there undies in a bunch no this isn't an NDA violation this same information can be found in reviews of the game thus far. I believe one of the Game Informer issues actually has an article saying almost exactly the same thing I just said.
So yeah lol this will be one of the slowest paced MMO's to hit the scene in a long long time, might even be THE slowest.
Alright guys, let's list our best baseless assumptions we can think of. Okay, go!!!
Huh, GrayGhost.. you took a headstart, what a buzzkill you are =/
Not an assumption and even the reviews support what I've said lol. But we can call it an assumption if you'd like lol.
Edited to add: The slow combat and the fact that they've even openly stated they want to follow in blizzards footsteps have made this one a game to miss for me.

Yes, it's not an assumption.. you're right.
You're just plain wrong.
But we can pretend that you have an idea of what you're talking about if you'd like, lol.
EDIT: Holy shit, troll of the week. I'll give you 8/10.
No not trolling honest opinion. In any case, your opinion and mine just seem to differ. Regardless of why I feel the way I do about the combat you assume that I'm wrong. You also assume the reviewers are wrong regardless of why they feel the way they do about the combat. I guess we just threw darts at a dart board to decide on how we felt about the pace of combat in your eyes. So be it lol, can't change your mind and not gonna try. I just stated my opinion and stated a fact that some reviews are out there saying pretty much the same.
But believe what you will because this is still fairly early and things can change and hey I could be wrong regardless of what caused me to form the opinion I have.

In the end it's each to there own.
Sounds better. Let's see now..
Like you, I neither do not assume anything. The pace of combat is faster than that of XI's, regardless of if there is global cooldown or not. The fact that each skill has cooldown is compensated with the cooldown being generally faster between attacks than in XI. You are right about it being slower than WoW's and other MMO's combat.
It would do you good to not think that the combat speed is what determines how 'good' it is, but yeah, to each his own.
Also, SE has not stated that they follow in Blizzard's footsteps.

Meh pace of combat is very important to me as are all combat related mechanics and systems. Combat is what I do the most in any MMO. I craft some but I'm 80-90% PvP and PvE. So all things combat related are my biggest concerns about an MMO.
Could be worse lol, I could be one of those "As long as it looks good...." type of gamers lol. A lot of those seem to be flocking to FFXIV though oO.

But combat being slow does not mean it is inferior to faster combat.
I don't mean combat does not matter as much in this game as it does in other games. It does. It is not worse because it is slow. That kind of thinking is narrow-minded.

Well to play middle ground here. I stopped playing FF XI just because it seemed like everything moved slow. This was pre-WoW for me so that's not a good comparison.
I think there's a big difference between fast and slow combat; spammy and paced combat; bunch o' buttons and situational menu; and of course fun and not so fun.
From what I've read and seen it's really going to be a 'let me try it' sort of deal before I can make a decision since it seems pretty polarizing. That's not really a bad thing for a game either, programming to please everyone makes it look like you're playing catch-up to other AAA titles and that is never a good thing.
I kill other players because they're smarter than AI, sometimes.

Depends on the gamer and that doesn't make it narrow minded thinking. I know what I like, and thats progression not regression. The days of slow combat are all but passed in MMO's. With AoC, Aion, WoW,CO and even DFO showing what could be combat wise not many are going to want to back track and go to an even slower pace.
That would be like going back to black and white TV's after HD came along. Sure it might be neat once in a blue moon but not something you'd look forward to on an every day basis.
But this is just my opinion, pace of combat is just as important to me as anything else combat wise. ]
Again this is just all personal opinion, some people preffer a slower pace I would imagine and others even need it to be slow as not everyone has good reaction time. It's like speed chess vs. chess. I can play both very well and have several trophies for both but I preffer speed chess now days. The pace and the ticking clock adds a bit of addrenaline rush, in the end for me it's a great deal more fun. But then again I can handle the pace.
Edited to add: Would also be like going back to dial up after having broadband lol. You can stack on as many bells and whistles as you like but I won't be trading my 60mbps to go back to dialup.

Actually if you read my chess and speed chess comparison you wouldn't have went there. Speed chess requires just as much thinking as chess, it just requires faster thinking. But thats not something everyone is capable of.
Again, I understand that some do need the slower pace as not everyone can think as fast or react as fast as others.

It does not. The less time you have to make decisions, the worse the decisions will be. No matter how fast you can think or react, with more time you can make better decisions. That is how XIV's combat works. You make proper decisions in a given time, which frankly reminds me of speed chess in terms of pace.

I'm not that great with hand-eye coordination, but my brain works fast. It's not ADHD for me. I'm fully capable of paying attention to something. It's just that I don't need that much time. I recently took my chemistry praxis exam and we're given 2 hours for it. I finished it between 50 and 55 minutes. It had 100 questions. So, don't lump everyone into ADHD catagory because you're incapable of thinking as fast or reacting as fast as others.

No. No. This is just wrong. Not everyone will make better decisions given more time. Some people simply do not need the extra time. For example, if I do not know something, no amount of time will allow me to learn it without some outside influence that is irrespective of time. Sometimes, people will not even think of a different solution to a problem until after they had had time to analyze the results of their attempt. Again, this is irrespective of the amount of time that they spend on a task.
